  Hello, I'm trying to set the width of table column to a minimum value. The header row (th) was set white-space:nowrap to prevent wrapping. Now all the columns (including td rows) set to a width that of th. I tried to expand the size of smaller columns by setting it in the html as <th style="width:200px;"> and <td style="width:200px;">, but it has no effect. In firebug, in the style section, the width setting is active element.style { width:200px; } Still, the computed tab shows the width is less than 200px. • Contract developer trying to get outsourcing contract with current client.

  I work for a major bank as a contract software developer. I've been there a few months, and without exception this place has the worst software practices I've ever seen. The software my team makes has no formal testing, terrible code (not reusable, hard to read, etc), minimal documentation, no defined development process and an absolutely sickening amount of waste due to bureaucratic overhead. Part of my contract is to maintain a group of thousands of very poorly written batch jobs. When one of the jobs fails (read: crashes), it's a developers job to look at the source, figure out what's wrong, fix it, and check it in. There is no quality assurance process or auditing of the results whatsoever. Once the developer says "it works" a manager signs off and it goes into production. What's disturbing is that these jobs essentially grab market data and put it into a third-party risk management system, which provides the bank with critical intelligence. I've discovered the disturbing truth that this has been happening since the 90s and nobody really has evidence the system is getting the correct data! Without going into details, an issue arose on Friday that was so horrible I actually stormed out of the place. I was ready to quit, but I decided to just get out to calm my nerves and possibly go back Monday. I've been reflecting today on how to handle this. I have realized that, in probably less than 6 months, I could (with 2 other developers) remake a large component of this system. The new system would provide them with, as primary benefits, a maintainable codebase less prone to error and a solid QA framework. To do it properly I would have to be outside the bank, the internal bureaucracy is just too much. And moreover, I think a bank is fundamentally not a place that can make good software. This is my plan. Write a report explaining in depth all the problems with their current system Explain why their software practices fail and generate a tremendous amount of error and waste. Use this as the basis for claiming the project must be developed externally. Write a high level development plan, including what resources I will require Hand 1,2,3 to my manager, hopefully he passes it up the chain. Worst case he fires me, but this isn't so bad. Convinced Executive decides to award my company a contract for the new system I have 8 years experience as a software contractor and have delivered my share of successful software products, but all working in-house for small/medium sized companies. When I read this over, I think I have a dynamite plan. But since this is the first time doing something this bold so I have my doubts. My question is, is this a good idea? If you think not, please spare no detail.

• Rails 3 and Bootstrap 2.1.0 - can't fix my footer

  I have Rails application with bootstrap 2.1.0 (i use twitter-bootstrap-rails gem for that). But i can't get working footer. It is not visible unless i scroll down the page. I can't get how to fix that. • Fixed point math in c#?

  Hi there, I was wondering if anyone here knows of any good resources for fixed point math in c#? I've seen things like this (http://2ddev.72dpiarmy.com/viewtopic.php?id=156) and this (http://stackoverflow.com/questions/79677/whats-the-best-way-to-do-fixed-point-math), and a number of discussions about whether decimal is really fixed point or actually floating point (update: responders have confirmed that it's definitely floating point), but I haven't seen a solid C# library for things like calculating cosine and sine. My needs are simple -- I need the basic operators, plus cosine, sine, arctan2, PI... I think that's about it. Maybe sqrt. I'm programming a 2D RTS game, which I have largely working, but the unit movement when using floating-point math (doubles) has very small inaccuracies over time (10-30 minutes) across multiple machines, leading to desyncs. This is presently only between a 32 bit OS and a 64 bit OS, all the 32 bit machines seem to stay in sync without issue, which is what makes me think this is a floating point issue. I was aware from this as a possible issue from the outset, and so have limited my use of non-integer position math as much as possible, but for smooth diagonal movement at varying speeds I'm calculating the angle between points in radians, then getting the x and y components of movement with sin and cos. That's the main issue. I'm also doing some calculations for line segment intersections, line-circle intersections, circle-rect intersections, etc, that also probably need to move from floating-point to fixed-point to avoid cross-machine issues. If there's something open source in Java or VB or another comparable language, I could probably convert the code for my uses. The main priority for me is accuracy, although I'd like as little speed loss over present performance as possible. This whole fixed point math thing is very new to me, and I'm surprised by how little practical information on it there is on google -- most stuff seems to be either theory or dense C++ header files. Anything you could do to point me in the right direction is much appreciated; if I can get this working, I plan to open-source the math functions I put together so that there will be a resource for other C# programmers out there. UPDATE: I could definitely make a cosine/sine lookup table work for my purposes, but I don't think that would work for arctan2, since I'd need to generate a table with about 64,000x64,000 entries (yikes). If you know any programmatic explanations of efficient ways to calculate things like arctan2, that would be awesome. My math background is all right, but the advanced formulas and traditional math notation are very difficult for me to translate into code.

  How can I detect page zoom level in all modern browsers? While this thread tells how to do it in IE7 and IE8, I can't find good solution for FF, Safari and Chrome. For FF one of the suggested solution FF stores page zoom level for future. So on first page load would I be able to get zoom level? Somewhere I read it works if you're changing zoom level on that page after its loaded. Is there a way to trap 'zoom' event? I need this because some of my calculations are based on no of pixels and they get changed on Zoom. Thanks. Modified sample given by tfl. • CSS: Chrome and Safari seem to 'add' border to width, while IE, Firefox & Opera don't

  Hey guys, I'm trying to achieve cross-browser consistency for my website, but I have been trying all day now and its driving me nuts (0.38 am here in Europe now..). It's about this page: http://www[insert-dot-here]geld[insert-dash-here]surfen[insert-dot-here]nl/uitbetalingen.html (please note that I prefer this URL not to be made crawlable for seo-bots) If you view this page in IE, Firefox or Opera, everything is fine, but in Chrome and Safari the tables are a little out of line (as you'll probably clearly notice). What seems to be the problem?; it appears to me that in Chrome and Safari the left and right border (2px) in total are added to the set table width, while in the other browsers the border is considered part of the width. The (most) relevant CSS-lines are the following ones (from the tabel.css-file, also available through the page's source file): table.uitbetaling { margin: 11px 18px 10px 19px; border: 1px solid #8ccaee; width: 498px; padding: 0; } table.uitbetaling img, table.uitbetaling td { margin: 0; border: 0; padding: 0; width: 496px; } table.uitbetaling tr { margin: 0; border: 0; padding: 0 1px 0 0; } So basically I have used a table-structure to organize images, like this; (the class of the table is 'uitbetaling') <table> <tr><td><img /></td></tr> <tr><td><img /></td></tr> ... <tr><td><img /></td></tr> </table> If, here, I set the width of 'table.uitbetaling' and 'table.uitbetaling img, table.uitbetaling td' to the same value (e.g. both 496 or 498), the 'problem' in Chrome and Safari is solved, however in Firefox the right side border is than blank. Because the right-side border can't 'fit' in anymore. 'img' and 'td' must be at least 2px more narrow than 'table.uitbetaling' for the right-border be visible in Firefox. • Missing taglibrary in Netbeans Hibernate tutorial xhtml file?

  I just finished the Netbeans introduction to Hibernate tutorial ( http://netbeans.org/kb/docs/web/hibernate-webapp.html#01 ) and I am getting the following error: "This page calls for XML namespace declared with prefix br but no taglibrary exists" Now, I have seen a similar question somewhere else: http://forums.sun.com/thread.jspa?threadID=5430327 but the answer is not listed there. Or, if it is, then I am clearly missing it -- line one of my index.xhtml file reads "http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml". It also does not explain why, when I reload localhost:8080, the message disappears. • Is x a reserved keyword in Javascript FF/Safari not in IE?

  A web page of a web application was showing a strange error. But when clicking on IMG element it shows a number as if x function got in some way removed from memory or deinstantiated (it does not even show x as "undefined" but as a number). To let you test it quickly I placed the working test above also here. This can be reproduced on both Firefox 3.6 and Safari 4.0.4. Everything works properly only on IE7+. I'm really clueless, I was wondering if x is maybe a reserved keyword in JS Firefox/Safari. Thanks to anyone who could help! FYI: if you repalce x() with z() everything work prefectly in all browsers (this is even more crazy to me) adding a real image in src attribute does not fix the problem removing style in img does not fix the problem (i gave style to image only to help you clicking on image thus you can see the imnage border)

• HTML/CSS set div to height of sibling

  I have 2 div's contained in a third. One of the contained div's is floated left, the other floated right. I would like the 2 sibling div's to always be at the same height, but am having a problem with this. So far I am only viewing the page in Firefox, and figured I'd worry about any cross-browser issues after I get it working in at least one browser. In an example I tried, Firefox said the computed style height of the #main-container was 804px, the computed style height of the #left-div was 800px, and the computed style height of the #right-div was 586.2px, as it had expanded to fit it's own content. I understand I might be going about this the wrong way, and if this is a duplicate questions then I apologize, but I wasn't quite sure what to search under.

• What could cause this difference in behaviour from iphone OS3.0 to iOS4.0?

  I am getting a strange EXC_BAD_ACCESS error when running my app on iOS4. The app has been pretty solid on OS3.x for some time - not even seeing crash logs in this area of the code (or many at all) in the wild. I'm stumped as to why this should be, given the code worked on the previous OS and hasn't changed since (even the binary compiled with the previous SDK crashes the same way, but not on OS3.0) - and given it is a simple property method. Any ideas? Could the NSError implementation have changed between releases or am I missing something obvious?

• Binary socket and policy file in Flex

  Hi, I'm trying to evaluate whether Flex can access binary sockets. Seems that there's a class calles Socket (flex.net package). The requirement is that Flex will connect to a server serving binary data. It will then subscribe to data and receive the feed which it will interpret and display as a chart. I've never worked with Flex, my experience lies with Java, so everything is new to me. So I'm trying to quickly set something simple up. The Java server expects the following: DataInputStream in = ..... byte cmd = in.readByte(); int size = in.readByte(); byte[] buf = new byte[size]; in.readFully(buf); ... do some stuff and send binary data in something like out.writeByte(1); out.writeInt(10000); ... etc... Flex, needs to connect to a localhost:6666 do the handshake and read data. So the question is, am I approaching whole streaming data issue wrong when it comes to Flex? Am I sending the policy file wrong? Unfortunately, I can't seem to find a good solid example of how to do it. It seems to me that Flex can do binary Client-Server application, but I personally lack some basic knowledge when doing it. I'm using Flex 3.5 in IntelliJ IDEA IDE. Any help is appreciated. Thank you!

• Data aggregation mongodb vs mysql

  I am currently researching on a backend to use for a project with demanding data aggregation requirements. The main project requirements are the following. Store millions of records for each user. Users might have more than 1 million entries per year so even with 100 users we are talking about 100 million entries per year. Data aggregation on those entries must be performed on the fly. The users need to be able to filter on the entries by a ton of available filters and then present summaries (totals , averages e.t.c) and graphs on the results. Obviously I cannot precalculate any of the aggregation results because the filter combinations (and thus the result sets) are huge. Users are going to have access on their own data only but it would be nice if anonymous stats could be calculated for all the data. The data is going to be most of the time in batch. e.g the user will upload the data every day and it could like 3000 records. In some later version there could be automated programs that upload every few minutes in smaller batches of 100 items for example. I made a simple test of creating a table with 1 million rows and performing a simple sum of 1 column both in mongodb and in mysql and the performance difference was huge. I do not remember the exact numbers but it was something like mysql = 200ms , mongodb = 20 sec. I have also made the test with couchdb and had much worse results. What seems promising speed wise is cassandra which I was very enthusiastic about when I first discovered it. However the documentation is scarce and I haven't found any solid examples on how to perform sums and other aggregate functions on the data. Is that possible ? As it seems from my test (Maybe I have done something wrong) with the current performance its impossible to use mongodb for such a project although the automated sharding functionality seems like a perfect fit for it. Does anybody have experience with data aggregation in mongodb or have any insights that might be of help for the implementation of the project ? Thanks, Dimitris

• Problems with contenteditable in Firefox

  Hello, I am working on a Javascript WYSIWYG editor in Firefox. I am using a div with the contenteditable attribute set to true in order to accomplish this (I cannot use a contenteditable iframe for this particular project). This contenteditable div is nested in another div that is not contenteditable. I am encountering the following two problems when using execCommand to apply formatting, including font style and size, as well as bold, italic, and underline: When all text in the div is selected, execCommand simply does not work. execCommand works fine when only part of the text is selected, but does nothing when all of the text is selected. Applying formatting with no text selected yields unexpected results. For example, when calling execCommand('bold') with no text selected and then typing results in bold text being typed until a spacebar is inserted, at which point the bold formatting is lost (until another space is inserted, interestingly enough; then the text becomes bold again). To see what I mean, please try running the following HTML code in Firefox 3: <html> <head><title></title></head> <body> <button onClick="execCommand('bold', false, null);">Bold</button> <div style="width: 300px; border: 1px solid #000000;"> <div contenteditable="true">Some editable text</div> </div> </body> </html> Please try the following: Select the word "Some" only. • CSS precedence order? My lecture slides are correct or not?

  Hi all: I've noticed that there are a couple of similar questions and answers at SO already, but let me clarify my specific question here first: I've got lecture slides which states like this: To be frank, I haven't heard of this rule of css precedence myself, and I googled to find something with similar topic but not quite like that : here To have a test myself, I've made a test page on my own server here After running it on FireFox 3.6.3, I am sure it does not show the way as it should be, according to the statement in lecture slides: imported stylesheet ? am I doing it wrong? I cannot see its effect using FireBug it says that embedded stylesheet has a higher precedence over linked/imported stylesheets, however, it doesn't work, if I put the linked/imported tag AFTER that. inline style vs html attributes ? I've got an image where I firstly set its inline style to control the width and height, then use direct html attributes width/height to try modifying that, but failed... • Is this scatter-brained workflow realizable in Git?

  This is what I'd like my workflow to look like at a conceptual level: I hack on my new feature for a while I notice a typo in a comment I change it Since the typo is completely unrelated to anything else, I put that change in a pile of comment fixes I keep working on the code I realize I need to flesh out a few utility functions I do so I put that change in its own pile Steps 2, 3, and 4 each repeat throughout the day I finish the new feature and put the changes for that feature in a pile I push nice patches upstream: One with the new feature, a few for the other tweaks, and one with a bunch of comment fixes if enough have accumulated Since I'm both lazy and a perfectionist, I want to be able to do some things out of order: I might correct a typo but forget to put it in the comment fix pile; when I prepare the upstream patches (I'm using git-svn, so I need to be pretty deliberate about these), I'll then pull out the comment fixes at that point. I might forget to separate things altogether until the very end. But I might /also/ have committed some of the piles along the way (sorry, the metaphor is breaking down …). This is all rather like just using Eclipse changesets with SVN, only I can have different changes to the same file in different piles (having to disentangle changes into different commits is what motivated me to move to git-svn, in fact …), and with Git I can have my full discombobulated change history, experimental branches and all, but still make a nice, neat patch. I've just recently started with Git after having wanted to for a good while, and I'm quite happy so far. The biggest way in which the above workflow doesn't really map into Git, though, is that a “bin” can't really be just a local branch, since the working tree only ever reflects the state of a single branch. Or maybe the Git index is a “pile,” and what I want is to have more than one somehow (effectively). I can think of a few ways to approximate what I want (maybe creative use of stash? Intricate stash-checkout-merge dances?), but my grasp on Git isn't solid enough to be sure of how best to put all the pieces together. It's said that Git is more a toolkit than a VCS, so I guess the question comes down to: How do I build this thing with these tools?

• Error in jquery attribute selector and IE6-7

  Hi, I'm trying to implement a JQuery script to process some areas inside an image map. I'm using $('area[shape="poly"]') as a selector to obtain the areas I'm interested in. It is working fine in IE8 and Firefox, but it is not selecting the elements in IE6 or IE7. This is a test page that shows this problem. • Nice, clean, simple way of getting a dataset from ASP.NET to plain HTML jQuery or JavaScript library

  I know this is a probable open ended question, and I have tried looking around so much over the last year or two... maybe I am looking for a perfect place that doesn't exist! of course it's all about perception no less.. Anyway, just to clarify what I am trying to do and why: I want to be able to use (primarily for the moment) ASP.NET or services thereof to get a dataset - whatever the source data, I can obviously get a dataset of rows/Columns. I want to be able to, as simply as possible, get that data over to the client via xml/json/whatever, to then use in a "variety" of ways. "Variety" of ways meaning I would like to "easily" bind that data to say a grid, or a combo dropdown or just simply render to a textbox - BUT by referencing the dataset as I would say on the serverside. Now I know this all sounds simplistic, and I know there are lots of complications.. so I have tried the following so far over the last year or so: ExtJS - very good, nice solid framework, but just found it a bit too much to use in everyday basic apps - great if I was building a whole application with it Yahoo YUI - not looked recently, but I guess some of the concepts with ExtJS were similar? JQuery - of course to get data etc, it was ok, and I guess there are so many 3rd party plugins, that a mix and match might work? Adobe SPRY - ironically this was as close to getting a dataset style structure to Javascript/client, although it seemed to drop off/go quiet..? I maybe wrong.. I did have a very cursory play with Tibco GI and another one I cannot remember the name of! but again, it felt like it was great to build a whole app perhaps? Anyway, I am very amazed by all of the technologies coming out, and really not biased one way or the other, I really just want a very simple way of getting data from the server, and having a basic/very flexible way of working with that data in the client without using server technologies.. I need to keep the server flexible as I may need to use PHP, or java technologies not just .NET So again, sorry for the rambles, but if anyone out there has had a simple experience, or would like to share some ideas, it would be very welcomed!!   I am trying to create contact bubbles in the MultiAutoCompleteTextView similiar to how it is implemented in the Google+ app. Below is a screen shot: . I have tried to extend the DynamicDrawableSpan class in order to get a spannable drawable in the background of a span of text public class BubbleSpan extends DynamicDrawableSpan { private Context c; public BubbleSpan(Context context) { super(); c = context; } @Override public Drawable getDrawable() { Resources res = c.getResources(); Drawable d = res.getDrawable(R.drawable.oval); d.setBounds(0, 0, 100, 20); return d; } } Where my oval.xml drawable is defined as so: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?> <shape xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android" android:shape="oval"> <solid android:color="#00000000"/> <stroke android:width="4dp" android:color="#99000000" android:dashWidth="4dp" android:dashGap="2dp" /> <padding android:left="7dp" android:top="7dp" android:right="7dp" android:bottom="7dp" /> <corners android:radius="4dp" /> </shape> In my Activity class that has the MulitAutoCompleteTextView, I set the bubble span like so: final Editable e = tv.getEditableText(); final SpannableStringBuilder sb = new SpannableStringBuilder(); sb.append("some sample text"); sb.setSpan(new BubbleSpan(getApplicationContext()), 0, 6, Spannable.SPAN_EXCLUSIVE_EXCLUSIVE); e.append(sb); However, instead of the oval shape displaying behind the first 6 characters in the string, the characters are not visible and there is no oval drawable in the background. If i change the BubbleSpan's getDrawable() method to use a .png instead of a shape drawable: public Drawable getDrawable() { Resources res = c.getResources(); Drawable d = res.getDrawable(android.R.drawable.bottom_bar); d.setBounds(0, 0, 100, 20); return d; } Then the .png will show up but the characters in the string that are a part of the span will not show up. How can I make it so that the characters in the span are displayed in the foreground, meanwhile a custom shape drawable gets displayed in the background? I attempted to also use an ImageSpan instead of subclassing DynamicDrawableSpan but was unsuccessful.
