• What should I read to improve my C++ style

  I was developing for quite long time already on C/C++ (mostly C, which makes style poorer). So, I know how to use it. However, quite often I stuck with style decisions like: - should I return error code here, throw exceptions, return error through a parameter - should I have all this stuff in constructor or should I create separate init function for that. and so on. Any solutions WILL work. However, each of them has cons and pros, which I know and most importantly which I don't know. It would be very nice to read something regarding overall C++ development style, coding practices and so forth. What do you recommend?

• Padding to the left and right of a floated image, in IE only.

  Generally I seem to be able to fix IE problems nowadays.. but this one realy has me stuck! Take a look at the screenshot below to see the problem or visit the url to see the problem. http://homedynamics.com/sawgrass/floorplan.php I have made sure the ul li and img's are all cleared (padding:0; margin:0; border:0;) and still there is padding added to the left and right of the images. I also did "display: block" on images with no luck. Can anyone point me in the right direction? Thanks!!

• Accessing contents of a file in a web-application without uploading.

  As far as I can tell, it is impossible to access the content of files on the user's computer in a web application without first uploading to the server, then re-downloading to user, unless some sort of plug-in is used. (Flash, etc.) Ideally, the user would upload the file directly to localstorage and then scripts would have a chance to process/display/validate/filter without the user having to wait on an upload. Are there any features in upcoming web standards such as html5 that will allow this? If not, why has there been no effort to make this possible, and how can I work around it without getting stuck with plugins?

  I'm abit stuck. I'm using jQuery. I have a cookie which has the value such as : 1,something|2,somethingg|1,something We are treating it as [0] as id and [1] as name. I need to remove ONE where the id == '1' for example, this will leave the cookie like this: 1,something|2,somethingg How do I go about this, it will probally be in a loop, but not sure how to remove one of them.   I would like to create a page where all images which reside on my website are listed with title and alternative representation. I already wrote me a little program to find and load all html files, but now I am stuck at how to extract src, title and alt from the html < img src="/image/fluffybunny.jpg" title="Harvey the bunny" alt="a cute little fluffy bunny"/ I guess this should be done with some regex, but since the order of the tags may vary, and I need all of them, I don't really know how to parse this in an elegant way (I could do it the hard char by char way, but thats painful).

  Hi,I have been stuck on this issue for quite some time now.Have read the documentation and many tutorials and they just confuse me more.I hope someone will provide me a straightforward answer.It's really important.Thank you.. Ok ..so i want an activity to get some input from the user as and then send that string to a service.Then i want my service to run in a way so that i can use other applications while this one keeps running in the background.Also i don't want the service to keep running every second.What i want is for the service to get updated location of my current position every 10 minutes so i was thinkin if there could be a way to make my service to go to sleep n wake up evry 10 mins n check for updates.I don't want to show the update on the UI so i dont think i need to use an AIDL approach and also dont need to bind to the service.I js simply want to start the service as soon as the user enters the string and keep the service runing every 10 mins.I think it is really simple but m very confused.Please help.

• WCF net.tcp server disconnects - how to handle properly on client side?

  I'm stuck with a bit of an annoying problem right now. I've got a Silverlight 4 application (which runs OOB by default). It uses WCF with net.tcp as means of communicating with the server. The client uses a central instance of the wcf client proxy. As long as everything keeps running on the server side, everything's fine. If i kill the server in the middle of everything, i drown in an avalanche of exceptions on the client side (connection lost, channel faulted etc etc). Now i'm looking for a way to handle this in a clean and centralized way (if centralized is possible). The SL app has one central client object sitting in App.cs (public static MyClient Client { get;set;}), which gets initialized on application start. Any idea how to properly handle any connectivity problems on the client object?

  Using WATIR and Excel, I'd like to take the first row of a table in Excel, visit the URL, then set the 12th link on the page as a variable in the cell next to the cell with the URL, then go to the next line and repeat. • Get client timezone (not GMT offset amount) in JS

  I need to determine the client timezone (e.g. CET, GMT, EST) in JS. Getting the offset is straightforward, but doesn't have all the info necessary to determine the TZ, at least not easily. I have a feeling it might be possible to use a combination of offset, whether DST is in use and in effect, etc. but I'm hoping someone else has done the work already, especially considering the weird exceptions when dealing with time. This question is similar but both the question and the answer are based on the (incorrect) assumption every browser's DateString format includes the name of the timezone - which it does not. That is an implementation detail. So, with that I am currently stuck.

I have placed a renamed copy of the config.js file in my webroot and call it with customConfig. It is not working for me though. Is my syntax creating any issues? • malloc hangs in Linux

  I am using Linux on a 16 G with 2 quad core CPU. There are 8 processes which are doing some work (CPU intensive/network i/o). Out of which 4 have a memory leak (These are test conditions so no problem in having leaks here). Total space is occupied by all processes is around 15.4 G only 200 MB is free in system. Things are fine for some hours. But after that malloc hangs (for a process which doesn't have a memory leak). Its stuck for for more than 4 minutes (Note CPU is not 100% but io has gone up signficantly). Now there is no problem in the hanged process. (It has not corrupted the memory). What malloc is doing? (is it tryibg to defragment or builidng up swap space).I am using SUSE 10. Any pointers?

• C# external tool for SSMS - Reading from stdin

  Hi all, I am trying to write an app that makes use of the external tools functionality of SQL Server Management Studio. To specify an external tool, you can enter a path to the app and specify some arguments to pass to the app via STDIN. Currently I just have a form that displays the arguments. Every time I run the external tool I get a new instance of the application. Ideally I would like for the first time I run the tool to load the application, and each subsequent running to take the arguments from STDIN and do something with them WITHOUT creating a new instance of the app. Is there anything I can do that could allow this, or am I stuck with lots of windows?   I am not usually a Smarty guy, so I'm a bit stuck. I want to echo the index of an array, but I want to increment it each time I echo it.   I've messed with Access a little bit in the past, had one class on OO theory, and one class on console c++ apps. Now, as a hobby project, I'm undertaking to write an actual app, which will be a database app using System.Data.SQLite and C#. I have the db's table structure planned. I have System.Data.SQLite installed and connected to VS Pro. I entered my tables and columns in VS, but that's where I'm stuck. I really don't know how to finish the db set up so I can start creating queries and testing the db structure. Can someone give me guidance to online resources that will help me learn how to get the db properly set up so I can proceed with testing it? I'm hoping for online resources specific to beginners using C# and System.Data.SQLite, but I'll use the closest I can get. Thanks.

  Background I'm working on a symmetric rounding class and I find that I'm stuck with regards to how to best find the number at position x that I will be rounding. I'm sure there is an efficient mathematical way to find the single digit and return it without having to resort to string parsing. Problem Suppose, I have the following (C#) psuedo-code: var position = 3; var value = 102.43587m; // I want this no ? (that is 5) protected static int FindNDigit(decimal value, int position) { // This snippet is what I am searching for } Also, it is worth noting that if my value is a whole number, I will need to return a zero for the result of FindNDigit.   For instance, I suppose I have a directory that contains the following folders foo_bar baz What I would like to have is a bash command that will make a symlink foo-bar to foo_bar so it would look like this: foo-bar foo_bar baz I'm pretty sure I can write a Python script to do this, but I'm curious if there's a way to do this with bash. Here's where I'm stuck: ls -1 | grep _ | xargs -I {} ln -s {} `{} | sed 's/_/-/'` What I'm trying to do is run the command ln -s with the first argument being the directory name and the second argument being that name passed through sed s/_/-/. Is there another way to do this?
