• Synchronising Cut-and-Paste Activities in Ubuntu One

  This was posted in the Ubuntu Forums but received no response, so I'm re-posting it here (with minor updates) in hopes that it will at least get some comments. Recently, I moved a large amount of contents (a few GBs) within the Ubuntu One folder (through cut-and-paste). Then I discovered how Ubuntu One does this is to remove them on the server side and upload all the files again in the new location. Obviously, this is undesirable because of the hefty uploading involved. Worse, since I have two computers synced to the same account, it is double the amount of traffic. Each computer took about one day to finish synchronising. Firstly, can anyone confirm that this is actually what's happening when we move folders? I'm using Ubuntu 10.04, by the way. Secondly, is there a way to cut-and-paste stuff within the Ubuntu One folder without uploading again?

A Bachelor's in Computer Science, and that should be enough of a conversation starter. But he's nearly completed his doctoral studies and is light years ahead of me in his particular area, which I find fascinating but don't have any legit reason to care about (except for maybe a better way through heavy traffic - he's a combinatorics guy specializing in that I think) and I got married and had some kids and am a professional programmer for medical records software. We've got a lot in common, but there's a point where neither of us care or understand each other - although I really want to learn from him and I'm not certain he'd even want to talk about his work.   So with an old burned install CD of Feisty Fawn I went through the process of completely formatting the Windows OS and installing Ubuntu on an old XP laptop. I then went through the online upgrade to 10.4 LTS, only installing the gnome desktop environment package in the process. My (admittedly very open) question is that in this state and online, what security considerations do I have to immediately make for the default install? I understand that a lot of this swings on my intended use of the server, but just sitting there online what risks is it exposed to (this obviously goes far beyond the realm of linux, but I am not sure how these risks are accommodated in the default install). For example, I believe there is a firewall installed with Ubuntu but by default it allows all traffic. Any other guidelines would be much appreciated. Thanks

• SEO one longer page vs. several targeted subpages?

  We're working on a site and have come to a choice between one long (not too excessive) main page and several subpages. The subpages would have custom metas/titles/h2 tags and the content that corresponds to them. The main page would have all the content and many more inbound links (pagerank) and with longer content encompassing the content we'd put on the shorter pages. Which would be better for seo and traffic in general? Both schemes are very usable to the user although we are a little concerned with duplicate content (the page's header/footer and other elements remain the same)

• How to stop Feedreader fetching content from my site using iFrame?

  As you all can see from the picture below, my site's content is duplicated by FeedReader (using iFrame) and indexed at Google. When I clicked at the FeedReader link, it uses some sort of iFrame to draw content from my site live. • How do I open up firewall while keeping it safe?

  Since I've installed Firestarter I have encountered connectivity issues that are all resolved by disabling the firewall. I'd prefer to have the firewall running and allow all the traffic I normally use: Wired network + wireless network, whichever I'm connected to, or both (1) OpenVPN VirtualBox internal network Samba (for accessing shared Windows folders and sharing folders to Windows) (2) BitTorrent And everything else I use that I can't think of :) All the above works without a firewall. I thought Linux was super secure (I update regularly). Do I really need it? (1) I used the Firestarter wizard and selected wlan0 as my primary connection, now whenever I plug in a network cable, I lose all connectivity. Should I just redo the wizard for eth0, or will I then lose wlan0? (2) If it makes a difference I'm sharing a directory that I share between local users using bindfs. • Apache - .httaccess RewriteRule from domainA to domainB

  Problem: I have a website (mywebsite.com) that was, and partly is, indexed in google. Somebody pointed their own domain (theirsite.com) name to my server and DNS, so it resolves with my IP. Now, probably being an older domain, it outranks me in google, and the pages at my domain are starting to getting de-indexed (probably duplicate content or something). So, for example, my homepage got de-indexed, and their homepage (theirsite.com/) is indexed with my content/code/etc. The same is for other pages (theirsite.com/other/page.html is showing mysite.com/other/page.html) Quick-fix: To quickly fix it, I have added few lines to my PHP code, checking for $_SERVER['HTTP_HOST'], and if different than my domain, redirects to my domain. It does the job, but to me it looks like a dirty solution. Question: I could not find a way to have apache to do this job. I would prefer to find an apache/.htaccess solution to this problem (redirecting all traffic from domainA.com/(.*) to domainB.com/$1), is it possible in any way? Thanks

  I have a new site that has multiple top-level domains and subdomains all going to it: www.domain.com, campaign.domain.com, chicago.domain.com, domain2.com - all go to the same site/site directory. Right now I have one Google Analytics account profile set up for it, but I want to be able to track the traffic that is hitting those different URLs separately. The domains are being routed on the server-side (not .htaccess). How can I do this in Google Analytics? Do I need to create filters? Or create different profiles for each domain?

If an error happens on the other application's end, is it reasonable for my stakeholder to expect the application I am working with to share responsibility for handling these scenarios? Notes: I am going to keep solutions limited to those that entail only one request--I am familiar with the "do an xmlhttprequest and see how that fares before doing anything else" approach.   I'd like to make a simple 2d car crashing game, where the player would drive his car into moving traffic and try to cause as much damage as possible in each level (some Burnout games had a mode like this). The physics part of the game is the most important, I can worry about graphics later. Would engine like emini or box2d work for this kind of game? Would Android devices have enough power to handle this? For example if there were about 20 cars colliding, along with some buildings, it would be nice if I could get 20 fps.

• PHPPgAdmin not working in Ubuntu 14.04

  After a fresh install of Ubuntu 14.04, I've installed postgresql and phppgadmin from the Ubuntu repos. I am using the Apache2 webserver. PHP is working fine in the webserver, as is PHPMyAdmin, but PHPPgAdmin is not working. When I try to access it at localhost/phppgadmin, I get a 404 message. I've tried creating a symlink in /var/www to the phppgadmin content, but that doesn't seem to work. How do I fix this? EDIT: note that I am using a local proxy server (squid) through which I funnel all my online traffic. While this may be part of the problem, I would be surprised if it was, because I am still on the same machine as phppgadmin and the requests logged in the apache access log indicate that incoming requests for the page are coming from the local machine (which is allowed in the policies for phppgadmin, if I understand things correctly).

  Anyone know the process for using a GA live UA code to test a site in development. I.e. I have a live site with a GA UA code attached, tracking live traffic data etc e.g. UA-123456. I've been told that there is a way to produce another code associated to the primary code to use on the testing version of my live site e.g. test code could be UA-123457. Can anyone shed some light on this? If not possible should I just set up a completely separate GA account for my testing site?

• Wisdom of using open source code in a commercial software product

  I'm looking at using some open source code in my ASP.NET web app (specifically dapper). Management is not a fan, because open source is seen as a risk that has bitten us before. Apparently previous developers have had to rewrite things after having open-source components fail. The pros seem to be: It does a lot of stuff for me that would otherwise involve either lots of boilerplate code or Microsoft's recommended but slower solution (Entity Framework). Cons: It's complex enough that if it were to fail suddenly in production, I would be hard pressed to fix it. However, it's in use on a much higher-traffic site than mine, so I don't think it'll end up being a high risk portion of the project. What is the consensus here? Is it unwise to use open source code in my project that I don't know/understand as well as I do my own code?

• Laptop not syncing with Ubuntu One

  I have a desktop running Maverick, and a laptop running Lucid. Both are supposed to be linked to my Ubuntu One account. The desktop syncs fine, but when I started the laptop for the first time in a couple of months, it wouldn't sync any more. The Ubuntu One Preferences window either reports "Synchronisation complete" even though no recent files have been downloaded nor have any test files created in the relevant synced folder been uploaded, or it says "Synchronisation in progress", which does not appear to be happening as it stays like this for ages and the lights on my router suggest no traffic is going through. Have repeatedly tried disconnecting and reconnecting, and removing the device from the account then reattaching it, all to no avail.

I can think of more reliable analytics and consistency for sure. Are there more? cross-sales?

• DNS configuration to force root domain to www

  we have an app running on heroku. the dns setup is like this: A record for domain.com - heroku front end ip addresses CNAME for www.domain.com - specific host name for our app provided by heroku we also have an SSL cert for www.domain.com. the issue is that if someone goes to https://domain.com/secure_stuff, they will get heroku's SSL cert, instead of ours, causing lots of fear. We can do things on our end to make sure that all of our URLs point to https://www.domain.com, but it still won't solve this specific issue. is there a way to configure the DNS record to redirect all root domain traffic to the www subdomain?

• How to use Google Analytics to track a development and production versions of the same site on different servers?

  I have a website with two versions, one for production and one for development (testing new features). All of the code is under version control and the websites are on separate servers. Currently, I have the same Google Analytics Tracking code used on both sites. Since the code is under version control, it would be ideal to either have an if I am on production, use this code; else if on development server use that code clause. But I suspect that Google makes it easier to do something like this. I see that there are many ways to configure a GA tracking code, e.g. "a single domain" vs. "multiple top level domains". But it is not clear to me how to set this up. Also, if tracking code configured for a single domain has been on the development server, have I been picking up traffic to both sites, or does GA just ignore the second domain that I haven't registered?
