• Windows 2008 terminal server - How to restrict access to DVD/floppy?

  I has a very simple task. I need to block access to removable media (CD, DVD, floppy, USB drives etc.) on a Windows 2008 R2 Terminal Server for users and allow it for admins. I tried to enable the following policy in GPO: User Configuration/Administrative Templates/System/Removable Storage Access All Removable Storage classes: Deny all access = Enabled But it did not work. I tried different physical and virtual 2008 servers with the same result. It works on Windows 7 but not on Windows 2008. Has anyone had success with this parameter on Windows 2008? Thank you

• Network wide rule to forwared IP address

  Hi, we have a virtual machine which hosts a web based bug tracker in our network which is reached internally via e.g. 192.168.1.5:9800. From the outside we made a port forwarding in our firewall so that the web site can be reached via e.g. 72.10.10.10:9800. Now that works fine but the problem is that we got different IP addresses to reach the same service depending if we are in the office or at home and when the service sends out an email the link doesn't always work :) So we are looking for a solution to fix it. One could be to make a rule in out firewall that all communication to 72.10.10.10:9800 is forwarded to 192.168.1.5:9800... If that's possible that is considering it's an IP address + a port. The reason we used a port is because we only got one static public IP address but multiple virtual web appliances. • Does the Windows "Sources" folder need copied to C: like the "i386" folder did?

  On all flavors of Windows prior to Windows Vista, the Windows install CD contained a folder called i386. After installing Windows, this folder is suppose to be copied to the C: drive. Once the folder has been copied, if user is ever installing a program or windows updates that require the Windows install CD, it will retrieve the files from the hard drive INSTEAD of prompting for the Windows CD. On new versions of Windows, including Windows Vista, Windows 7, Server 2008 and Server 2008 R2, the i386 folder has been renamed to "sources". Should this folder be copied to the hard drive? Or do the new versions of Windows work differently (i.e. by installing all features on the hard drive to eliminate the need for ever prompting the user to insert their disc.) It does not hurt to copy the sources folder, so I have been doing it. But if I could eliminate time wasted it would make installations faster which helps my customers' bottom line.

  Hi, I'm trying to grant read-only access (in other words: select queries only) to a user account on my SQL Server 2008 R2 database. Which rights do I have to grant to the user to make this work? I've tried several kinds of combinations of permissions on the server and the database itself, but in all cases the user could still run update queries or he could not run any queries (not even select) at all. • How to Remove a VM From Hyper-V Without Deleting the Configuration File?

  I'm in the process of moving a number of virtual machines that are homed on shared storage (a file share, though shared cluster disk would work as well) to a new VM host with access to the same shared storage. The new host is a different build version (moving from Windows Server 2012 Beta to Windows Server 2012 RC - though this same process could be used with migrations of Windows Server 2008/2008 R2 to Windows Server 2012 as well), so I cannot migrate the machine with inbox tooling. I need to remove the VM from management of the source Hyper-V host in order to import the VM to the new Hyper-V host. I want to retain the configuration file, so I can import the VM as it stands and not need to reconfigure it. The VHD files are rather large and they are staying on the same file share, so I'd rather not duplicate them during the move process.

  I've got a Windows Server 2008 R2 box and I want to make it a RDS server and connect with thin clients. I don't want to do VDI with hyper-v, as this box is already virtualized. RDS is installed and I've installed an RDS CAL. I've browsed the Technet articles, but navigating technet is worthless. Can anyone point me to a concise get-me-started guide to terminal services/remote desktop services? If I can just get aimed in the right direction I can probably figure it out myself. Thanks.

• Snippets between desktop and laptop

  The Situation: At work, I have a nice beefy desktop running Windows Server 2008 R2 (SharePoint dev machine). My handy ThinkPad is right next to it. Every once in a while I'd like to cut and paste or share something (usually text) between the machines: for example, I might be headed out and I'd like to take send the URL I'm reading from the desktop to the laptop. Of course I can create a share or use the Admin shares and create files to get stuff back and forth, but that seems heavyweight for what I'm thinking of. I'm thinking more along the lines of sending myself an IM. How do you get little things from machine to machine? Keep a shared folder pinned to the taskbar? Send an email to yourself? Bookmark sync? While on it, I'm looking for a decent multiple clipboard handler: maybe these two functions are combined in some nice little utility? I suspect I'm missing something simple here... Thanks... • Windows Server 2008, IIS7 and Windows Authentication

  We currently have a development server set up which we are trying to test some Windows authentication ASP.NET code on. We have turned on Windows Authentication in IIS7 on Windows Server 2008 R2 fine, and it asks the user for a username and password as excepted, but the problem is it doesn't appear to accept any credentials. This code for example... Protected Sub Page_Load(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles Me.Load Page.Title = "Home page for " + User.Identity.Name End Sub ...always returns an empty string. One theory we have is that we dont have Active Directory installed as of yet, we are just testing this by logging on via the machine name not a domain. Is this type of authentication only applicatable to domains (if so we can probably install Active Directory and some test accounts) - or is it possible to get the user identity when logging in using the machine name? Ideally we would like to be able to test this on our local machines (Windows 7 Pro) using our own accounts (again these aren't on a domain) and IIS but this has the same issue as our dev server.   Possible Duplicate: Windows remote controle for dual monitor setup I would like to use all my monitors for the remote session (an option in RDC dialogue) if I connect (from Windows 7) to the one server with Windows 2008 R2 it works OK (I have remote connection on my all monitors) when do I connect to the another server with Windows 7 it just wound not use all my monitors, but just one (full screen mode). What do I missing here? Some setting on the Windows 7 server? Basically my question is: How to establish multimonitor RDC connection from Windows 7 to another Windows 7 running computer?

  I know Linux can use RDMA NICs like Solarflare... I just found Intel has something like that NetEffect cards. But Intel is talking all about clusters.. Can someone please explain. If I want low-latency networking and install RDMA NIC on my server. Is there limitation on where the cable can go? Is there a specific device expected on the other end? Is it special RDMA switch or RDMA adapter before switch or what? Why is this cluster talk? What if I want a single server with Windows (I can install HPC Windows or Windows 2008 R2)?

• IIS 7.5 401.3 Access Denied

  I am having this weird issue with IIS 7.5 on Windows 2008 R2 x64. I created a site in IIS and manually created a test file index.html and everything worked. When I try to do a deployment, I copy all the files from my local PC to the IIS server, try to access index.html (this is the proper deployed file) and getting 401.3 access denied error. I then try to manually recreate index.html and copy content into this newly created file and the page is accessible again... I just can't figure this out. So the issue is that IIS 7.5 can't server files that have been copied from other PCs. I tried to reset/apply permission settings to the copied folders/files but nothing has worked. Please help. Thanks! By the way, the files that I copied are just some html cutups i.e. generic html, css and image files, nothing special.

• SQL Server Snapshot Replication Subscriber (Editable or Read-Only)

  I need to create a copy of my SQL 2008 R2 Enterprise database and have it located on the same server as the original. I will be using this second copy of the database as the target of a mostly read-only website. I understand that if I create this copy of the database using snapshot replication that all data changes in the subscriber database will be overwriten in the event of the next replication. The web application will try to write to this database to record login attempts, etc and will fail if its source database is read-only. In my case I do not need to keep these auditing records and they can therefore be overwriten each time a new snapshot is applied. My question is whether SQL Server forces the subcriber database to be read-only and is there any way around this? Thank you, Nate

• Remote Desktop to Virtual Machine

  Hello: I recently reformatted one of my servers with Windows Server 2008 x64 and with that, installed the latest version of VMWare server on it. Within that, I created a new Windows Server 2003 R2 x86 virtual machine for the purposes of being a backup domain controller. I was able to successfully configure it as a domain controller and have it provide DNS service to my domain. I've been using the VMWare remote console to set this up and figured it was time to get remote desktop working. I set it up as I have with many other computers on my network (hitting the checkbox, making the firewall isn't blocking it) and I cannot get remote desktop to connect to it. I've tried using the computer name and its IP address neither work. I can ping the computer from the outside but the Virtual machine cannot ping anything from inside it. All machines are on the same subnet. I can't seem to figure this out.

The exceptions are being thrown when trying to access directories that are virtual dirs in IIS, and plain old UNC network shares What the implications for enabling the WebDAV extensions on our live web server? And will this solve our problems with the exceptions in our event log?

• How to use psexec to start installation or other task that requires UAC interaction?

  I'm trying to remotely start installations and I'd like not to disable UAC. If I start the processes remotely using psexec, the installer will just get stalled waiting for the UAC prompt. Other tasks such as temporary files cleaning, services restarting, etc, will get me Access Denied errors. Is there anyway psexec can walk around UAC such as logging in with Administrator but with the TrustedInstaller privileges or something like that? By the way, I'm targeting Windows 2008 R2, but I think this question applies to Vista, 2008 and Windows 7 as well.

• Hyper-V 2012 and VM web server http

  I have a a few windows 2008 R2 Datacenter machines and a few windows 2012 Datacenter machines. I was runnin RedHat 6.2 VM on 2008 and all my other servers could access it over http until I put a VM up on 2012. No mater what I have done, (turned off selinux, firewall, iptables), on both RedHat servers has allowed them to pass http traffic. They can ping each other and ssh to each other but not http. I tried turning off the windows firewalls to, but no joy. I then moved the RedHat VM to the 2012 server and now the two RedHat VM's can http to each other, but none of the other vm's on other 2012 and 2008 servers can communicate over http. Anyone have some insight?

  Are there any comparisons between Hyper-V client machines and their physical equivalent? I've looked around and can find 4000 articles about improving Hyper-V performance, but I can't find any that actually do a side-by-side comparison or give benchmarking numbers. Ideally, I'm interested in a comparison of CPU, memory, disk, and graphics performance between something like the following: Some powerful workstation (with plenty of RAM) with Windows 7 installed on it directly Same exact worksation with Hyper-V Server 2008 R2 (the bare Server role) and a full-screen Windows 7 client machine Virtual Server 2005 had performance that didn't compare at all with actual hardware, but with the advances in CPU and hardware-level virtualization, has performance improved significantly? How obvious would it be to a user of the two above scenarios that one of them was virtualized, and does anybody know of actual benchmarking of this type?

  I have a need to place Windows Server 2012 onto a Sunfire X4100 blade server that contains a LSI SAS 1064e RAID controller (2006). The LSI site only has drivers up to server 2008 R2. I did attempt to install server 2012 hoping it might contain generic MS Drivers (I was dreaming, I know). That failed. I attempted to load external LSI drivers for server 2008. That failed as well. Am I out of luck, or did I miss something? Thanks in advance.

Since I want to automate everything, I'm looking to by-pass the domain controllers Welcome page using a registry hack script. I work for a large company and the Active Directory people are unwilling to change group policy. I figure if it's a registry key I can script the change, install the software, replace the key and reboot as the final step. Is there a registry key change that will by-pass the Domain Join Welcome page?

  I build a basic WCF service that I now want to host in IIS7 under Windows Server 2008 R2. I added the service as an application under the default web site but whenever i try to run the application I get the following error: HTTP Error 500.19 - Internal Server Error The requested page cannot be accessed because the related configuration data for the page is invalid. Config Error - Cannot read configuration file due to insufficient permissions The only way I can get this service working is if i choose to "connect as" the server Administrator when adding the service. the "application user (pass-through authentication)" option does not seem to work. Could anyone help me out, I've just started using IIS7 and have no idea what to do... Thanks

  In our small office we are currently running a standalone tower server with WS 2008 R2, SQL Express and IIS. This server is going to be decommissioned and scrapped as its old and very noisy. We are going to purchase a new server with WS 2012 Standard and a heap of ram. It will still be a standalone server so it will be a domain controller, have SQL Express and IIS installed. We intend to install the hyper-v role and host a second virtual server to distribute the load. We are a small company and have only 15 staff members so its not a huge load on the server. Can a single server handle this type of installation, we don't want to purchase two servers. If so how should it be configured with regard to which software packages should be virtualized(if any). Redundancy is not a huge issue for us.

  I was recently installing Microsoft Windows SDK for Windows 7 and .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 to create my build server on a VM (Windows 2003 R2 Std), I was wondering that it would be nice to specify the temporary folder for the files being extracted by MSI for use during the installation. This should ideally work for any MSIs. I have some more virtual hard disks I have attached to this VMs, to point the temporary folder for MSI to one of these virtual hard disks would be quite productive since I can remove/discard this virtual hard disk later. Compacting the C drive VHD is a pain, and does not always reclaim space correctly. I tried changing the %temp% and tmp environment variable with no effect? • Unable to connect to the Report Server

  Win/7 Professional SQL Server 2008 R2 Express Reporting Services Configuration Manager When I launch it, shows correct Server Name, but report server instance is blank. When I press FIND I get: "Unable to connect to the Report Server " This is my development workstation, so no IIS installed. Seems to work fine on XP. SSMS works fine - no issues. I tried uninstalling SQL Server completely, rebooting, reinstalling a fresh download. Same result. I've googled every article I can find - nothing. Can anyone point me in the right direction in case you've come across this yourself? Thanks.

• failover cluster file replication

  I have a Windows 2008 R2 failover cluster server. I am going to move one of our window services onto this new server. The service writes some trace information to a log file on the local harddrive. This will become a problem when it is moved to cluster server when cluster A become unavailable and cluster B takes over and now there are 2 places where I need to look for log files. Is there a way to make sure regardless of which cluster is on, I get one complete log file? I have been researching this and there is something called DFS replication but i was wondering if there is something better that works with failover cluster... I prefer not having to update my code. I can specify it to write log files to a different location by changing app.config file but no code change...
