• SSIS 2008 Configuration Settings Handling Logic for Variables Visualized

  There are many articles discussing the specifics of how the configuration settings are applied including the differences between SSIS 2005 and 2008 version implementations, however this topic keeps resurfacing on MSDN’s SSIS Forum. I thought it could be useful to cover the logic aspect visually. Below is a diagram explaining the basic flow of a variable setting for a case when no parent package is involved.   As you can see the run time stage ignores any command line flags for variables already set in the config file, I realize this is not stressed enough in many publications. Besides, another interesting fact is that the command line dtexec tool is case sensitive for the portion following the package keyword, I mean if you specify your flag to set a new value for a variable like dtexec /f Package.dtsx -set \package.variables[varPkgMyDate].value;02/01/2011 (notice the lover case v in .value) You will get errors. By capitalizing the keyword the package runs successfully.

• Unity-2D ALT F1,F2 custom configuration

  I have been using Ubuntu since the first public version (I used Debian before). I always have had the policy to change between 8 workspaces with ALT F1...F8. I know this is not a "standard" or so, but I prefer this. It worked well with Unity (Unity-2D, I mean) too, after some configuration. But currently the odd thing happened that after a system restart this is not the case anymore, I am totally lost what could happened. Now ALT F3...F8 works, but not ALT-F1...F2, which just focuses launcher/dash, which is not the thing I want. I know this is the standard meaning of these key combinations (AFAIK) but defining my own key combinations worked before and now it stopped working ... If someone have any idea how to restore my custom configured meaning for ALT F1...F2 too, please share with me. Thanks!

• Apt Configuration problem

  I am trying to load v11.04 onto my HP desktop hard drive using a USB drive. I used the same USB drive to load the system on my Dell netbook and it loaded successfully. But trying to load on the desktop I get the error " Apt configuration problem. An attempt to configure apt to install additional packages from the CD failed" The installer then crashes. I have nothing in the CD drive. I can boot the system from the USB drive and it works fine. I have tried all options on the load with the same crash each time. I baffled as I successfully loaded my netbook with the same USB with no problems.

• Another Update to SQL Server Configuration Scripting Utility

  I’ve been gradually adding features to my utility that scripts the configuration of a SQL Server.  Since my last post I’ve added the following features: Skip any encrypted object in a database Script alerts, alert notifications and operators Script audits Always script model, master and msdb to capture any user-defined objects in those databases Logins are now scripted so that everything for a login is grouped together. There’s a second section in the logins that handles default databases.  In many cases a login’s default database is a mirror target and can’t be set.  This is now handled gracefully.  It also includes a separate section for all default databases so those can be quickly set in the event of a disaster. Script credentials Script proxy accounts Script database mail My goal is still to get everything outside a database scripted.  This release is enough that I can keep my mirror target servers in sync with their principals.

The config file is as below: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8" ?> <configuration> <appSettings> <add key="key1" value="hello,world!"/> </appSettings> <connectionStrings> <add name="conn1" connectionString="abcd"/> </connectionStrings> </configuration> .NET Framework provide the following types to get the connection string: 1- ConnectionStringsSection : stands for the config section containing several connection strings 2- ConnectionStringSettingsCollection : stands for the connection string collection 3- ConnectionStringSettings : stands for a certain connection string. .NET Framework also provide the following types to get the App Settings: 4- AppSettingsSection 5- KeyValueConfigurationCollection 6- KeyValueConfigurationElement Compare 2 to 5, 3 to 6, why are there extra "s" in ConnectionStringSetting[s]Collection and ConnectionStringSetting[s]? This mis-spelling is really mis-leading. I think it's a design flaw. Has anyone noticed that?

• Can't boot - "Waiting for Network Configuration"

  After an update on 13.10, my PC won't boot Ubuntu any longer. It displays the infamous "Waiting for Network Configuration" message and then hangs. I can go into recovery mode, and choose "Start networking" and then go to a root prompt, and that works fine. Ping works. /etc/network/interfaces contains just the two lines "auto lo" and "iface lo inet loopback". I've double-checked that my network is working, the cable is working (it works on another PC) and the network card seems to indicate a connection. Any suggestions on how to get my PC booted again? Right now I'm limited to a root shell prompt.

  In a nutshell - I want to be able to instantiate object based on runtime parameters. In this particular case there are only two parameters but the problem is that I'm facing different permutations of these parameters and it gets messy. Here is the situation: I want to get an instance of an object specific to, say, given country and then, say, specific state/province. So, considering the US, there are 50 possible combinations. In reality it's less than that but that's the max. Think of it this way, I want to find out what's the penalty for smoking pot in a given country/state, I pass this information in and I get instantiated object telling me what it is. I have already gone thru trouble of defining different combinations. I'd like to avoid having to do the same during container configuration. I want to inject State into the Country. Also, I'd like to return UsaBasePenalty value in case state is not specified. Is that possible? Perhaps these is something wrong with the design.

  I created a custom Ubuntu 11.10 amd64 desktop based distro using remastersys, but whenever I try to boot using the iso file in vmware, it shows this error : no ui or default configuration found I've tried changing the name of isolinux to syslinux but that didnt help me either! I also tried using unetbootin but it also doesnt boot, and tried every possible but to no avail. There is a similar question but it is about 10.10 and 32 bit, but that didnt solve my query and also as this is a custom distro, the solution could be different. I've also tried creating images using remastersys again and again but that wont help either. Please help me its very urgent!

• Notepad++ incorrect syntax highlithing?

  So I want to build a XHTML 1.0 Strict based website. Using Notepad++ for syntax highlighting came as an idea to me. But when I tried to put the XML declaration (as stated in the spec, proper XHTML pages should use a XML declaration and be served as application/xhtml+xml) I can't get the entire document highlighted propperly. • xsltproc killed, out of memory

  I'm trying to split up a 13GB xml file into small ~50MB xml files with this XSLT style sheet. But this process kills xsltproc after I see it taking up over 1.7GB of memory (that's the total on the system). Is there any way to deal with huge XML files with xsltproc? Can I change my style sheet? Or should I use a different processor? • apache2: Could not open configuration file /etc/apache2/apache2.conf: Permission denied

  I recently upgraded Ubuntu to the latest LTS edition on my work laptop, which I use as a LAMP development platform. The upgrade was from 12.4 to 14.4. Now I'm having trouble getting apache up and running again. Here is the output from an attempt: antonc@antonc-laptop:/etc/apache2$ sudo service apache2 restart * Restarting web server apache2 * The apache2 configtest failed. Output of config test was: apache2: Could not open configuration file /etc/apache2/apache2.conf: Permission denied Action 'configtest' failed. The Apache error log may have more information. Here is a list of permissions and ownership in /etc/apache, showing that apache2.conf is currently owned by root with permissions 644. I changed this temporarily to 777, but this made no difference, so I changed it back to 644. antonc@antonc-laptop:/etc/apache2$ ls -l total 80 -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 7115 Jan 7 2014 apache2.conf ... What do I need to do to get apache running again? Is the problem really with apache2.conf or some other setting? Should the conf file be owned by a user other than root?

• Sitemaps - do I need to submit each sitemap in sitemap_index.xml to Google Webmaster tools?

• Open XML SDK 2 Released

• Host is unreacheble with static networking configuration via /etc/network/interfaces while GUI NetworkManager is ok

  I have some trouble setting-up the network interface using the static IP configuration. I run ubuntu 12.04 kernel 3.11.0-22 with the back-ports enabled. I followed these instructions from help.ubuntu.com but there seems to exist some conflict between the GUI approach (NetworkManager) and the command line approach. $ sudo nano /etc/network/interfaces auto lo iface lo inet loopback auto eth0 iface eth0 inet static address 10.1.1.50 gateway 10.1.1.10 netmask 255.255.255.0 dns-nameservers 192.168.3.45 192.168.8.10 $ sudo /etc/init.d/networking restart I than try to ping for example google.com ping -c 3 www.google.com the response is that the host is unreachable. The icon on the top right of the desktop says: wired network disconnected. If I work using the GUI approach (Edit Connections and so on...) all works great. • XMLPad – a new tool in my developer utility belt

  Yesterday I was on the lookout for a free tool that would help me write XPath statements. I put a shout out on Twitter and Johan Barnard replied saying : Give XMLPad a try http://www.wmhelp.com/xmlpad3.htm I’m sure there are legions of developers out there that know all about XMLPad but I had never heard about it so I suspect some of you reading haven’t either. Today I downloaded it to give it a run out and I gotta say – I love it. I only used it to do one thing –constructing an XPath expression to point to a particular Configuration definition in a .dtsx file- and it allowed me to do that with consummate ease. The feature I particularly loved was that, similar to Google Suggest, it showed me results from my expression as I typed. Here is a screenshot of my XPath expression to find (and just try saying this in a hurry) the value of a property whose DTS:Name attribute equals ‘ConfigurationString’ of a Configuration definition where the value of that Configuration definition’s property whose DTS:Name attribute equals ‘ObjectName’, equals ‘BIConfig My XPath expression: /DTS:Executable/DTS:Configuration[DTS:Property[@DTS:Name=’ObjectName’]=’BIConfig’]/DTS:Property[@DTS:Name=’ConfigurationString’] and believe me, there was no way I would have been able to come up with that without a tool to help me! So, an easy tip for you – if you need to write XPath expression download XMLPad for free from http://www.wmhelp.com/xmlpad3.htm and see what it can do for you. That’s all. • Ralink RT3060 wireless device configuration on ubuntu 12.04

  concerning How do I get a Ralink RT3060 wireless card working? I'm running Ubuntu 12.04 with a 'LWPX07 Edimax EW-7711In 150M 1T1R WL PCI Card' which has a rt3060 chip. Out of the box the card is recognized as rt2800sta. I tried solution one, that didn't work. Still the card connects to the wireless network, but it seems to slow to load any pages. Then I tried solution 2, but then the network-manager doesn't see any wireless device. $ iwconfig lo no wireless extensions. ra0 Ralink STA Link Quality:0 Signal level:0 Noise level:0 Rx invalid nwid:0 invalid crypt:0 invalid misc:0 eth0 no wireless extensions. $ lsmod Module Size Used by rt3562sta 882296 0 $ lspci -v 05:02.0 Network controller: Ralink corp. RT3060 Wireless 802.11n 1T/1R Subsystem: Edimax Computer Co. Device 7711 Flags: bus master, slow devsel, latency 64, IRQ 23 Memory at ff9f0000 (32-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=64K] Capabilities: <access denied> Kernel driver in use: rt2860 Kernel modules: rt3562sta, rt2800pci Am I missing a configuration step? How do I tell the network card which driver to use? Thanks in advance Stephan I found the problem. As described in stevens blog http://steveswinsburg.wordpress.com/2011/03/12/how-to-install-a-d-link-dwa-525-wireless-network-card-in-ubuntu-10-04/ sudo su make && make install "You need to use ‘sudo su’ and not just ‘sudo’ so it creates the directories properly." That is the problem with the solution describe above.
