• How to test other DE in Ubuntu 12.10 live (alpha)

  caution: 12.10 is not yet released but I was told it will say as is also when release happens (live session) So, new ubuntu live session does not have option to "logout" and choose different desktop environment (DE). This function was usable if one installs ubuntu live on USB stick with permanent changes. One can install any software, including KDE (plasma) or LXDE. Until including 12.04, one could simply logout and choose different DE. Now, there is no "logout" option in top right menu and if ran service lightdm restart it automatically logs in to live session account with unity.

• MediaWiki plugin for dynamic content via forms

  Are there any plugins for MediaWiki that would allow me to create a page that has a form at the top that when filled in populates tags further down in the document? Say someone would put a form with "Source Server:" and "Destination Server:" fields at the top. Once those were typed in it would automatically populate those names into the content lower so that when following the instructions you could just read the docs and not have to mentally replace things, and possibly mess it all up. I'm not looking to make pages that are permanent, just ones that can have values entered before they are followed. Any suggestions?

  For the past few days I've been trying to configure a data T1 via a Frame Relay. Now I've been pretty unsuccessful at it, and it's been a while, since I've done this so please bare with me. The ISP provided me the following information: 1. IP address 2. Gateway address 3. Encapsulation Frame Relay 4. DLCI 100 5. BZ8 ESF (I think the bz8 was supposed to be b8zs) 6. Time Slot (1 al 24). • UI font has rendering glitches in GNOME Shell

  I don't really know how to describe this problem in English. A picture can say more words - look at the tabs at the top of the linked image. The current font settings are shown as well. I don't know what basic info I should provide so if something missing, please tell me. Ubuntu 12.04 GNOME Shell 3.4.1 I know, a reboot can make everything normal but I'm looking for a more permanent solution that can fix this problem (or bug). • Ubuntu thinks I have two displays

  When I first installed Ubuntu I noticed that my mouse would flicker a lot, which caused me to investigate. I remembered back when I ran Fedora I had an issue where it thought I had two displays (hp-dv7 4285dx laptop). In Fedora, this didn't cause any issues. In Ubuntu, it causes the mouse the flicker a lot. The fix I've been using is to just go into settings displays and disable the display that doesn't actually exist. The only problem is that this is not permanent. Each time I start up Ubuntu, I have to go back in and disable this display. They're each just titled "Built-in Display", and have the same resolution. My laptop does have two graphics cards: one on-board and one dedicated. I'm not sure if maybe that is causing is an issue? Any guidance towards this would be great. Thanks!

  I'd like to permanently set Nautilus's view preferences to show files sorted in reverse by date modified (newest first). Similar questions have been asked before: How can I sort files in Nautilus by modified date? Can I view my files sorted by date? However, they don't address making the preference permanent. Nautilus's preferences allow you to set sort by date modified (oldest first), but not reverse date modified (newest first). Does anyone have suggestions on setting sorted by reverse date modified as default?

• eth0 not working on startup

  Hi to all, This might sound strange but, working with my Lubuntu 10.04 i've experienced troubles when connecting to my eth0 newtwork. After some googling, i've found out that by writting in the CLI the following command: mii-tool eth0 -F 10baseT-FD and activating the eth0 in the toolbar (by clicking "activate eth0") everything works just fine. Well, up to now, i did not have any problem, because every time i turned on the computer i had to do this, but it was very little effort.But now, i would like to use the machine as a file server, accesing it by ssh, without monitor or keyboard. So, i won't be able to make this actions, and can't do this at startup because mii-tool needs root permissions. So, the question is: Do you know what does that command do, and how can id make that change permanent? Or do you know any other solution for my problem? I hope i was clear! If not, tell me and i'll try to be as clearer as possible. Thanks in advance!

Recently, I want to relocate and find out there are not that many PeopleSoft development out there. 90% of the vacant positions are contract type of jobs. I'd rather get a full time permanent position. In PS, I do a lot of maintenance rather than new programming. It does get very boring. Also, I'm not sure if Oracle will one day pull off the plug for PS. What language is in most demand and also offers above average salary? Is it C#, Java, Python, Perl, ...? Thanks.

• Facebook likes reset after moving to HTTPS

  I've got a question regarding the Facebook like button. We worked on a piece recently that embeds a number of social share buttons (please see the source code below). When the piece was released, it was on HTTP, and received over 2k likes (the URL 'slug' hasn't changed at all). The site was recently migrated to permanent-on HTTPS, and the like data has been reset, and we've been left with 50 new, recent likes. If you see in the source code, the URL is set explicitly to like the HTTP version, which I believe to be correct. Can anyone help me work out what's happened here? • Ubuntu 12.04 - what is it with the keyboard layout resets?

  so, on each reboot my keyboard always resets to US (!?) sudo dpkg-reconfigure keyboard-configuration gives temporary relief. Is there a way to make it permanent? I tried: sudo dpkg-reconfigure console-setup This did not work, and on reboot gnome3 was no longer responsive so I am back to gnome classic....   I've been toying with the idea for the last few years and I figured it was about time to start asking questions about it! Here goes: I'm a Senior-level .NET/C# programmer from the UK, with 7 years of commercial experience in industry and looking to work over across the pond in the big ol' USA! This is with a view to live there on a permanent basis. My idea is to try and set up some interviews and go over there for a week to attend them, then I guess wait for responses in hopes they'd sponsor me for a working VISA. I'd like to know is there anyone out there with any experience of doing the same thing? Was it difficult finding work? Is there anything I should know before embarking on this route? • How do I test UrlHelper.RouteUrl()?

  I'm having a tough go trying to figure out what I need to mock in my tests to show that UrlHelper.RouteUrl() is returning the right URL. It works, but I'd like to have the right test coverage. The meat of the controller method looks like this: var urlHelper = new UrlHelper(ControllerContext.RequestContext); return Json(new BasicJsonMessage { Result = true, Redirect = urlHelper.RouteUrl(new { controller = "TheController", action = "TheAction", id = somerecordnumber }) }); Testing the result object is easy enough, like this: var controller = new MyController(); var result = controller.DoTheNewHotness()); Assert.IsInstanceOf<JsonResult>(result); var data = (BasicJsonMessage)result.Data; Assert.IsTrue(data.Result); result.Redirect is always null because the controller obviously doesn't know anything about the routing.   We have a site I'll call acme.com. Most of the time you see http://www.acme.com and sometimes we redirect you to https://www.acme.com. We want to redirect anyone going to http://acme.com or http://*.acme.com to http://www.acme.com, and the same for https. (It's mainly to avoid the alert you get if you go to https://acme.com instead of https://www.acme.com) Our vhost file is at the end of the post. It works nicely except for one strange behavior: http://acme.com - successfully redirects to http://www.acme.com http://www.acme.com - successfully does not redirect http://foo.acme.com - successfully redirects to http://www.acme.com https://acme.com - successfully redirects to https://www.acme.com https://www.acme.com - successfully does not direct https://foo.acme.com - ERROR - redirects to http://www.acme.com It's this last result I can't fathom. I've tried a lot of trial and error solutions from Google & Stack Overflow but nothing seems to change it. Even if we swap the order of the configurations (so that 443 is before 80) it still redirects https://foo.acme.com to http://www.acme.com We are running Apache/2.2.12 on Ubuntu. • Check ReturnUrl is valid before redirecting

  I'm using ASP.NET Membership and Form Authentication and before redirecting to the returnURL I wanted to validate it. For those unfamiliar with the workflow, basically if you request a page that requires that you are authenticated, you are redirected to a login page. In the URL string you'll see a parameter called returnURL, e.g. http://example.com/login.aspx?ReturnUrl=%2fprotected%2fdefault.aspx Whether you use this in a redirect such as Response.Redirect(returnURL) or indirectly through the FormsAuthentication.RedirectFromLoginPage method, it passes without validating returnURL. FormsAuthentication.RedirectFromLoginPage does have a security check that it is isn't leaving the domain, but that still doesn't stop someone from putting enough random characters to cause an error. I tried using System.IO.File.Exists(Server.MapPath(returnURL)) but given enough illegal characters it cause Server.MapPath to error. Note: URLEncoding doesn't work because we are not cleaning a parameter, but the primary URL. Any other suggestions for validating or cleaning the returnURL value?

  Hi - I have a situation where I want to take the following URL: /1/john and have it redirect using Apache's htaccess file to go to /page.php?id=1&name=john#john so that it goes to an html anchor with the name of john. I've found a lot of reference to escaping special characters, and to adding the [NE] flag so that the redirect ignores the # sign, but these don't work. For example, adding [NE,R] means that the URL just appears in the browser address as the original: http://mysite.com/page.php?id=1&name=john#john. Any help would be appreciated.

• How to return model state from child action handler in ASP.NET MVC

  In my blog engine, I have one controller action that displays blog content, and in that view, I call Html.RenderAction(...) to render the "CreateComment" form. When a user posts a comment, the post is handled by the comment controller (not the blog controller). If the comment data is valid, I simply return a Redirect back to the blog page's URL. If the comment data is invalid (e.g. comment body is empty), I want to return the ViewData with the error information back to the blog controller and through the blog view to the CreateComment action/view so I can display which fields are bad. I have this working fine via AJAX when Javascript is enabled, but now I'm working on the case where Javascript might be disabled. If I return a RedirecToAction or Redirect from the comment controller, the model state information is lost. Any ideas?

• Display custom error page when file upload exceeds allowed size in ASP.NET MVC2

  Hello! My main issue is that I want to display an custom error page when an uploaded file exceeds allowed size (maxRequestLength in web.config). When the big file is uploaded an HttpException is thrown before my upload action method in the controller is invoked. This is expected. I have tried to catch the exception in a custom attribute and also to override OnException in the controller. Why isnt it possible to catch the exception in either the attribute or the OnException method? Its possible though to catch the exception in Application_Error in global.asax but neither Response.Redirect nor Server.Transfer works for redirecting to the custom error page. Server.Transfer gives the "failed to process child request" error and response.redirect gives the "Http headers already sent" error. Any ideas? Thanks in advance! Marcus

• Posting a form and redirecting to action ASP.NET MVC

  I have a navigation bar that uses JQuery to move between 4 stages of signup process. However I need to make sure everything is working with JS disabled. So I have these 4 link images at the bottom of the page and I need so that if one is clicked it posts to the current action so I can save all the form data and then redirect to the next stage. The redirect is easy enough as I will just pass a parameter in the route or form but I don't know how to post the method using just action links. I could put 4 different submit buttons with different classes for the image backgrounds etc but this feels wrong. Any ideas?

• Searchengine bots and meta refresh for disabled Javascript

  Hi! I have a website that must have javascript turned on so it can work there is a < noscript tag that have a meta to redirect the user to a page that alerts him about the disabled javascript... I am wondering, is this a bad thing for search engine crawlers? Because I send an e-mail to myself when someone doesn't have js so I can analyze if its necessary to rebuild the website for these people, but its 100% js activated and the only ones that doesn't have JS are searchengines crawlers... I guess google, yahoo etc doesn't take the meta refresh seriously when inside a < noscript ? Should I do something to check if they are bots and do not redirect them with meta? Thanks, Joe

• Gateway Page Between ASP and an ASP.NET Page

  I'll admit, I am pretty new with ASP .NET programming and I have been asked to take all our gateway pages (written in classic ASP) and make one universal gateway page to the few C# .NET applications we have (that I wrote). I tried searching here and the web and couldn't find much of anything describing a great way to do this and figured I was either not searching properly or was not properly naming what I am trying to do. I decided to to take one of the main gateway pages we had in classic ASP and use that as a base for my new gateway. Without boring you with a bunch of code I will summarize my gateway in steps and then can take advice/critique from there. EDIT: Basically what I am trying to do is go from a classic ASP page to a ASP .NET page and then back again. EDIT2: If my question is still unclear I am asking if what I have an the right start and if anyone has suggestions as to how this could be better. It can be as generic as need-be, not looking for a specific off-the-shelf code answer. My Gateway page: In the first part of the page I grab session variables and determine if the user is leaving or returning through the gateway: Code (in VB): uid = Request.QueryString("GUID") If uid = "" Then direction = "Leaving" End If ' Gather available user information. userid = Session("lnglrnregid") bankid = Session("strBankid") ' Return location. floor = Request.QueryString("Floor") ' The option chosen will determine if the user continues as SSL or not. I omitted the stored procedure call. Lastly, I use the direction variable to determine if the user is leaving or returning and do redirects from there to the different areas of the site. Code (In VB again): If direction = "Leaving" Then Select Case floor Case "sscat", "ssassign" ' A SkillSoft course Response.Redirect("Some site here") Case "lrcat", "lrassign" ' A LawRoom course Response.Redirect("Some site here") Case Else ' Some other SCORM course like MindLeaders or a custom upload. • jquery script removal

  I am working on a page(ASP.NET 3.5) that has alert when "Save" button is pressed, i.e.this in page code behind: Page.ClientScript.RegisterStartupScript(this.GetType(), "alertMsg", "alert('" + Message + "');", true); So when I look at the page after sucessful save I see a script tag added: <script type="text/javascript"> //<![CDATA[ alert('Save Sucessful.'); </script> The problem is that there is another button that redirects to another page and on that page there is a button to jump back to this page, i.e. javascript:history.go(-1); So if you save then go to another page and come back you see alert again. Unless there is a better way of handling this situation, I think I need to remove that script when I redirect from the page, can I do it with jQuery, i.e. on redirect button click remove above script from the page?
