• SEO made easy with IIS URL Rewrite 2.0 SEO templates

- by The Official Microsoft IIS Site
A few weeks ago my team released the version 2.0 of the URL Rewrite for IIS . URL Rewrite is probably the most powerful Rewrite engine for Web Applications. It gives you many features including Inbound Rewriting (ie. Rewrite the URL, Redirect to another URL, Abort Requests, use of Maps, and more), and in Version 2.0 it also includes Outbound Rewriting so that you can rewrite URLs or any markup as the content is being sent back even if its generated using PHP, ASP.NET or any other technology. It also...(read more)

• Custom Error, 404, 401 pages in SharePoint…

- by Shawn Cicoria
In WSS 3.0/MOSS 2007 we had to resort to things like HttpModules [1] for errors, access denied, or for 404 errors updating the WebApp properties [2] Well, in 2010, thanks to Andrew Connell for pointing this out, Todd Carter blogs about what we now have in SPS 2010 here: http://todd-carter.com/post/2010/04/07/An-Expected-Error-Has-Occurred.aspx [1] http://blogs.msdn.com/ketaanhs/archive/2009/03/16/moss-sharepoint-2007-custom-error-page-and-access-denied-page.aspx [2] http://blogs.msdn.com/jingmeili/archive/2007/04/08/how-to-create-your-own-custom-404-error-page-and-handle-redirect-in-sharepoint-2007-moss.aspx

• How do I serve dynamic WebDAV directory listings using Apache

- by Jack Douglas
I can use mod_rewrite to redirect /dynamic.php/xyz.php to /dynamic.php and then server different content for xyz.php using $_SERVER - where xyz.php is any arbitrary filename requested by a client. No problem so far. When a client connects to my WebDAV server they can list the contents of a directory, eg / or /dynamic.php/ - how do I intercept this request so I can dynamically generate a list of available files for the client (which requests this list using PROPFIND)?

• Including Amazon affiliate link to Amazon homepage

- by zpesk
I want a link on my Web site that sends the user to the Amazon homepage, but includes my affiliate code so that any subsequent purchases get credited to my account. I have been browsing through the Amazon Associates portal and there only seems to be a way to link to a specific product. I found this link on daringfireball.net: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/redirect?tag=daringfirebal-20&path=subst/home/home.html If I replace his affiliate code (daringfirebal-20) with mine, will this work? is this documented anywhere?

• XNA Per-Polygon Collision Check

- by user22985
I'm working on a project in XNA for WP7 with a low-poly environment, my problem is I need to setup a working per-polygon collision check between 2 or more 3d meshes. I've checked tons of tutorials but all of them use bounding-boxes, bounding-spheres,rays etc., but what I really need is a VERY precise way of checking if the polygons of two distinct models have intersected or not. If you could redirect me to an example or at least give me some pointers I would be grateful.

• Migration from one domain to another - Transfering the social media stats

- by Dipak Saraf
I am planning to move my site from one domain to another i.e from domain a.com to b.com . The site also has a lot of content and the migration of content is not an issue. The 301 redirect will take care of all the backlinks also. But my real worry is transfer the social media shares links and stats from domain a.com to b.com. I need some insight or any way in which the same can be migrated seamlessly from domain a.com to b.com

• 2 Servers 1 Database - Can I use Redis?

- by Aust
Ok I have a couple of questions here. First let me give you some background information. I'm starting a project where I have a node.js server running my application and my website running on another normal server. My application will allow multiple users simultaneous connections and updates to the database so Redis seemed like a good fit there because of its speed and atomic functions. For someone to access my application they have to login with an account. To get an account, they have to signup for one through my website. So my website needs a database, but its not important to have a database like Redis here because it doesn't need it. Which leads me to my first question: 1. Can Redis even be used without node.js? It seems like it would be convenient if both of my servers were using the same database to keep track of information. In some cases, they will keep track of the same information (as in user information) and in other cases, they will be keeping track of separate information. So even if the website wouldn't be taking full advantage of all that Redis has to offer it seems like it would be more convenient. So assuming Redis could be used in this situation that leads to my next question: 2. Since Redis is linked with JavaScript, how would I handle the security from my website users? What would be stopping my website users from opening firebug or chrome's inspector and making changes to the database? Maybe if I designed my site with the layout like this: apply.php-update.php-home.php. Where after they submitted their form it would redirect them to the update page where the JavaScript would run and then redirect them after the database updated to the home page. I don't really know I'm just taking shots in the dark at this point. :) Maybe a better alternative would be to have my node.js application access its own Redis database and also have access to another MySQL database that my website also has access to. Or maybe there is another database that would be better suited for this situation other than Redis. Anyways any direction on this matter would be greatly appreciated. :)

• Using Google Analytics tracking URLs in Facebook ads

- by Ted
I generated the following Google Analytics tracking URL to use in a Facebook ad: https://www.somewebsite.org/?utm_source=facebook&utm_medium=cpc&utm_term=schools&utm_content=newsfeed&utm_campaign=facebookad3 I know the ad is being clicked (Facebook ad manager data) but the referred traffic is not appearing in my site's Google Analytics data. I think it's because Facebook is doing some weird redirect URL modifying. Any ideas?

• How do i force www subdomain on both https and http

- by Brian Perin
For whatever reason I can't seem to get this right, I've looked at many examples on here and apache's website. I'm trying to force www.domain.com instead of domain.com on EITHER http or https but I am not trying to force https over http. the following code seems to work for all https connections but http will not redirect to www. RewriteEngine On RewriteCond %{HTTPS} on RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} !^www\.domain\.com$ [NC] RewriteRule ^ https://www.domain.com%{REQUEST_URI} [R=301] RewriteEngine On RewriteCond %{HTTPS} off RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} !^www\.domain\.com$ [NC] RewriteRule ^ http://www.domain.com%{REQUEST_URI} [R=301]

• Can I stream Netflix to Ubuntu via a Mac?

- by Chan-Ho Suh
Right now I'm dual-booting Ubuntu and OS X. The only thing I use OS X for is watching the DRM-ed Netflix stream. I've looked into ways of watching Netflix on Ubuntu, but it seems the DRM basically makes that impossible (Moonlight project says unless Netflix drops the DRM their Silverlight replacement will not allow watching of Netflix). But then I realized, hey what if I stream Netflix to another computer running say, OS X, then somehow redirect it (using Unix magic) to my Ubuntu machine? Is this possible?

• Domain masking (and simple page links)

- by Halik
How do you set up the domain (Im using godaddy) to mask the server url but to append the sub-page link. Im thinking something like the wikipedia en.wikipedia.org/wiki/something (or, if it would require httpd.conf access, setting it to append the default subpage link eg. '?page_id=2') Currently I can set up the domain to either be masked completely without showing any sub-page links or to simply redirect my domain to my web server.

• Mixing Forms and Token Authentication in a single ASP.NET Application

- by Your DisplayName here!
I recently had the task to find out how to mix ASP.NET Forms Authentication with WIF’s WS-Federation. The FormsAuth app did already exist, and a new sub-directory of this application should use ADFS for authentication. Minimum changes to the existing application code would be a plus ;) Since the application is using ASP.NET MVC this was quite easy to accomplish – WebForms would be a little harder, but still doable. I will discuss the MVC solution here. To solve this problem, I made the following changes to the standard MVC internet application template: Added WIF’s WSFederationAuthenticationModule and SessionAuthenticationModule to the modules section. Add a WIF configuration section to configure the trust with ADFS. Added a new authorization attribute. This attribute will go on controller that demand ADFS (or STS in general) authentication. The attribute logic is quite simple – it checks for authenticated users – and additionally that the authentication type is set to Federation. If that’s the case all is good, if not, the redirect to the STS will be triggered. public class RequireTokenAuthenticationAttribute : AuthorizeAttribute { protected override bool AuthorizeCore(HttpContextBase httpContext) { if (httpContext.User.Identity.IsAuthenticated && httpContext.User.Identity.AuthenticationType.Equals( WIF.AuthenticationTypes.Federation, StringComparison.OrdinalIgnoreCase)) { return true; } return false; } protected override void HandleUnauthorizedRequest(AuthorizationContext filterContext) { // do the redirect to the STS var message = FederatedAuthentication.WSFederationAuthenticationModule.CreateSignInRequest( "passive", filterContext.HttpContext.Request.RawUrl, false); filterContext.Result = new RedirectResult(message.RequestUrl); } } That’s it ;) If you want to know why this works (and a possible gotcha) – read my next post.

• Is it possible to use canonical tag in Blogger posts?

- by John Sanjay
I found one of my blog post was cached by Google (www.example.com/post.html). I found that comment page of the post was also cached (www.example.com/post.html?showComment=1372054729698). These two pages are showing in Google SERP when I checked cached posts of my blog. Is it possible to use canonical tag on the post www.example.com/post.html?showComment=1372054729698 so that Google won't penalize my original post? Is there any other ways to redirect a blog post?

Now I was wondering, what would be the best practice SEO-wise, to do a 301 redirect to the main page if anyone try to access those pages, or a 404 and display something like "Page not Found" ? Perhaps something completely else..?

• SEO for replacing blog content, but keeping the same page URL

- by cphill
This might not have any major impact on the SEO, but basically I have random blog at this URL: http://example.com/blog (not a real URL), that I am removing and replacing with a company blog. I want to use the http://example.com/blog URL address, but I'm not sure how this would effect my SEO since this random blog content that I am removing has the example.com/blog URL prefix. Would I just add a 310 redirect for those old blog articles and leave the basic /blog URL without any redirects?
