  • MAAS nodes stuck on "maas-enlisting-node"

    - by CyberJacob
I am trying to set up an MAAS cluster, but am having some issues adding nodes. The nodes boot up from the TFTP server on the master server, display a login screen (with the hostname "maas-enlisting-node") and stop. I cannot log in with ubuntu/ubuntu or with my SSH keys. The MAAS server is running DHCP and DNS on the network, and the TFTP boot appears to be loading everything without issues (I can screencap if you want) Any ideas what's going wrong? Thanks!

  • Add SiteAdvisor to Google Chrome

    - by Asian Angel
With the continued increase in malware knowing when a website is trouble can save you from a painful experience. If you are looking to add a bit more security to your Chromium-based Browser then join us as we look at the SiteAdvisor for Chrome extension. SiteAdvisor for Chrome in Action Once you have installed the extension you should go into the options first. You can choose which style of warning that you would like to receive when encountering a “less then reputable” website. The default setting is for the “Toolbar Icon Warning” but can be easily changed to a full “Webpage Redirect”. Note: The “Toolbar Button/Icon” does not display a drop-down window when clicked on. Here is an example if you go with the default and receive the “Toolbar Icon Warning”. Once again the same website except with the full “Webpage Redirect” in effect…of the two options this is the recommended setting. Notice that details are provided for “why” the website is listed as “less than reputable”. An example of a website that is all good…nothing but checkmarks and green. Terrific! There may be those of you who would be more comfortable with a “double layer” of protection while browsing. As you can see here SiteAdvisor and WOT work nicely together. You can read more about WOT for Chrome here. Conclusion If you worry about “less than reputable” websites SiteAdvisor for Chrome can help provide a layer of security that will warn you when you are getting ready to “browse” into possible trouble. • Make Your Coworker’s Day in Ubuntu

    - by Trevor Bekolay
It can be difficult to express your appreciation for your coworkers in person – what if they take it the wrong way, or think you’re fishing for a compliment of your own? If you use Ubuntu in your office, here’s a quick way to show your appreciation while avoiding the social pitfalls of face-to-face communication. Make sure their computer is locked An unlocked computer is a vulnerable computer. Vulnerable to malware sure, but much more vulnerable to the local office prankster, who thinks it’s hilarious to make a screenshot of your desktop, change your background to that screenshot, then hide all of your desktop icons. These incidents have taught us that you should lock your computer when taking a break. Hopefully your coworker has learned the same lesson, and pressed Ctrl+Alt+L before stepping out for a coffee. Leave a carefully worded message Now is your opportunity to leave your message of appreciation on your coworker’s computer. Click on the Leave Message button and type away! Click on Save. Wait, possibly in the shadows If you sit near your coworker, then wait for them to return. If you sit farther away, then try to listen for their footsteps. Eventually they will return to their computer and enter their password to unlock it. Observe smile Once they return to their desktop, they will be greeted with the message you left. Look to see if they appreciated the message, and if so, feel free to take credit. If they look annoyed, or press the Cancel button, continue on with your day like nothing happened. You may also try to slip into a conversation that you saw Jerry tinkering with their computer earlier. Conclusion Leaving your coworkers a nice message is easy and can brighten up their dull afternoon. We’re pretty sure that this method can only be used for good and not evil, but if you have any other suggestions of messages to leave, let us know in the comments! I'm having frequent disconnects with my new install of Ubuntu 12.10. I tried updating the kernel driver to the latest intel release to no avail. My expertise is spent. It happens anywhere between 1 min and 10 min. • Looking for BIND web interface

    - by Olivier Lalonde
I currently manage the domains of many clients and would like to setup a BIND server so I can all manage them from one place. Now, I'm looking for a web interface to BIND that would let my clients manage their domains by themselves in case they wanted to. What web apps would be well suited for this? I'm looking for something that will only do DNS management, not something more complete like Webmin.

  • Running TeamCity from Amazon EC2 - Cloud based scalable build and continuous Integration

    - by RoyOsherove
I’ve been having fun playing with the amazon EC2 cloud service. I set up a server running TeamCity, and an image of a server that just runs a TeamCity agent. I also setup TeamCity  to automatically instantiate agents on EC2 and shut them down based upon availability of free agents. Here’s how I did it: The first step was setting up the teamcity server. Create an account on amazon EC2 (BTW, amazon’s sites works better in IE than it does in chrome.. who knew!?) Open the EC2 dashboard, and click “Launch Instance” . From the “Quick Start” tab I selected from the list: “Getting Started on Microsoft Windows Server 2008 (AMI Id: ami-c5e40dac)” .  it’s good enough to just run teamcity. In the instance details, I used the default (Small instance, 1.7 GB mem). You might want to choose a close availability zone based on where you are. We want to “Launch instances” so click continue. Select the default kernel, RAM disk and all. No need to enable monitoring for now (you can do that later). click continue. If you don’t have a key pair, you will be prompted to create one. Once you do, select it in the list. Now you’ll be prompted to create a security group. I named mine “TC” as in “TeamCity”. each group is a bunch of settings on which ports can be let through into and out of a hosted machine.  keep it as the default settings. We will change them later. Click continue,  review and then click “Launch”. Now you’ll be able to see the new instance in the running instances list on your site. Now, you need to install stuff on that instance (TeamCity!) . To do that, you’ll need to Remote desktop into that instance. To do that, we’ll get the admin password for that instance: Check it on the list, and click “Instance Actions” - “Get Windows Admin Password”. You might have to wait about 10 minutes or so for the password to be generated for you. Once you have the password, you will remote desktop (start-run-‘mstsc’) into the instance. It’s address is a dns address shown below the list under “Public DNS”. it looks something like: ec2-256-226-194-91.compute-1.amazonaws.com Once you’re inside the instance – you’ll need to open IE (it is in hardened mode so you’ll have to relax its security settings to download stuff). I first downloaded chrome and using chrome I downloaded TeamCity. Note that the download speed is FAST. several MBs per second. To be able to see TeamCity from the outside, you will need to open the advanced firewall settings inside the remote machine, and add incoming and outgoing rules for port 80 (HTTP). Once you do that, you should be able to see the machine from the outside. If you still can’t, see the next step. I also enabled ports 9090 since I will use this machine to create an agent image later as well. Now configure the security group (TC) to enable talking to agents: IN the EC2 dashboard click on “Security Groups” and select your group. To add a rule, click on the empty list under the ‘protocol’ header. select TCP. from and ‘to’ ports are 9090. source ip is 0.0.0.0/0 (every ip is allowed). click “Save.  Also make sure you can see “HTTP” tcp 80 in that list. if you can’t see it, add it or you won’t be able to browse to the machine’s teamcity server home page. I also set an elastic IP for the machine: so I always have the same IP for the machine instance. Allocate and set one through the”Elastic IP” link on the EC2 dashboard.   you should now have a working instance of teamcity.   Now let’s create an agent image. Repeat steps 1-9, but this time, make sure you select a machine that fits what an agent might do. I selected Instance type – Hihg-CPU medium machine,  that is much faster. On that machine, I installed what I needed (VS 2010, PostSharp etc..). downloading VS 2010 from MSDN (2 GB took less than 10 min!) Now, instead of installing teamcity, browse using the browser to the teamcity homepage (from within the remote machine). go to the Administration page, and click the upper right link “Install agents”. Install the agent on he local machine – set it to the IP or DNS of the running TeamCity server. That way you’ll be able to check their connectivity live before making this machine your official agent image to reuse. Once the agent is installed, see that the TC server can see it and use it. see steps 13-14 above if they can’t. Once it works, you can take steps to make this image your agent image to be reused. next, here is a copy-paste of several steps to take from http://confluence.jetbrains.net/display/TCD5/Setting+Up+TeamCity+for+Amazon+EC2 Configure system so that agent it is started on machine boot (and make sure TeamCity server is accessible on machine boot). Test the setup by rebooting machine and checking that the agent connects normally to the server. Prepare the Image for bundling: Remove any temporary/history information in the system. Stop the agent (under Windows stop the service but leave it in Automatic startup type) Delete content agent logs and temp directories (not necessary) Delete "<Agent Home>/conf/amazon-*" file (not necessary) Change config/buildAgent.properties to remove properties: name, serverAddress, authToken (not necessary)   Now, we need to: Make AMI from the running instance. Configure TeamCity EC2 support on TeamCity server. Making an AMI: Check the instance of the agent in the EC2 dashboard instance list, and select instance actions->Create Image (EBS AMI) you’ll see the image pending in the APIs list in the EC2 dashboard. this could take 30 minutes or more. meanwhile we can configure the could support in the teamcity server. COPY THE AMI ID to the clipboard (looks like ami-a88aa4ce) Configuring TeamCity for Cloud: In TeamCity, click on “Agents” and then on “Cloud” tab. this is where you will control your cloud agents. to configure new cloud agents based on APIs, click on the right link to the “configuration page” Create a new profile and select AMazon EC2 as cloud type. Use your AMI ID that you copied to the clipboard into the “Images” field. Select an availability zone that is the same as the one your instance is running on for best communication perf between them make sure you select the ‘TC’ security group hopefully, that should be it, and teamcity will try to instantiate new instances on demand. Note that it may take around 10 minutes for an agent to become available to teamcity from the time it’s started.

  • What is the current state of Ubuntu's transition from init scripts to Upstart?

What is the current state of Ubuntu's transition from init.d scripts to upstart? So I was quite surprised to learn that there was a significant amount of overlap in service references, in addition to being unable to discern which of the two was intended to be the primary service framework. Why does there seem to be a fair amount of redundancy in individual service handling between init.d and upstart? Is something else at play here that I'm missing? What is preventing upstart from completely taking over for init.d? Is there some functionality that certain daemons require which upstart does not yet have, which are preventing some services from converting? Or is it something else entirely?

  • Networking Guidelines

    - by ACShorten
One of the things I have noticed in my years in IT is the changes in networking. In the past networking was pretty simple with the host name and name resolution (via DNS) being pretty simple. Some sites still use this simple networking setup. These days, more complex name resolution, proxies, firewalls, demarcation nd virtualization, can make networking more complex. This can cause issues when installing products with in built networking that can frustrate even seasoned veterans. I have put together a few basic guidelines to hopefully help along with product installation and getting a product to operate in a somewhat complex network setup. All the components of the product (including the infrastructure) need to communicate via a network (even it is within a local machine/host). Ensure any host names referred to within configuration files are accessible via your networking setup. This may mean defining the hosts to the machines, to the DNS for name resolution and even your firewall to allow machines to communicate within your network. Make sure the ports used for any of the infrastructure are accessible (even through your firewall) and are unique within the host. Host duplication can cause the product to fail on startup as the port is already in use. If there are still issues, consider using localhost as your host name. I have used this in so many situations that I tend to use it now as a default anytime I install anything myself. Most Oracle products suggest to use localhost when using dynamic host or dynamic IP addresses and this is no different for the Oracle Utilities Application Framework. If you do use localhost then installing a Loopback Adapter for the operating system is recommended to force networking to a minimum. Usually localhost resolves to 127.0.0.1. When using multiple network connections, especially in a virtualized environment, ensure the host and ports used are relevent for the network cards you have setup. One of the common issues is finding the product is using a vierualized network card only to find that it is not setup for correct networking. If you are using the batch component, do not forget to ensure that the multicast protocol is enabled on your host and that the multicast address and port number specified are valid and accessible from all machines in the batch cluster (if clustering used). The same advice applies if you are using unicast where each host/port combination should be accessible. Hopefully these basic networking recommendations will help minimize any networking issues you might encounter.

  • Webpage loading with wrong content-type after setting up CloudFlare

    - by Daniel Little
I recently migrated my blog to the Ghost service, I've also setup an alias DNS record with CloudFlare. While showing the blog to a colleague I discovered one of the posts wasn't loading properly and would instead prompt to be downloaded with an application/octet-stream content-type. I can view all the pages without any issues and I believe we're both on the same network as well. Has anyone received a wrong content type like application/octet-stream using CloudFlare, or know what I can do to correct this?

  • Is it a bug or a task when something doesn't work, yet, in development process

    - by Patkos Csaba
We usually have this dilemma in our team. Sometimes, in order to implement a task or a story we find out that the system must be in a specific state. For example, a specific system configuration has to be made beforehand. The task / story can be completed and it is working as specified on it with the proper configuration in place. Note that the configuration is not directly related with the task. Next, we have to create a new ... ??? ... something for the process of generating that configuration file. This is where the problems appear. Some say that it is a bug others say it is a task or an extra feature. So, where is the limit between bugs and tasks in the development phase? Should we even consider something a bug if all the tasks are working as stated in their definitions? Can a thing be considered a bug because one compares it to the current (unstable) state of the system? Short example: A feature requires configuring a communication service for a specific operation. In the process of the implementation the team discovers that the service requires the hostnames of the pears to be resolvable to an IP address. The team adds the hostnames to the DNS server (or hosts files) and continues implementing the required feature. After the initial feature is working, a question is risen. Should the sysadmin configure the DNS or hosts file or should our application do it automatically? An automatic solution is possible. So a decision is made to implement it. ... here start the discussions ... is this a bug or an extra feature / task? PS: I know that I mixed feature / task / story in the question. It is intentional. I am interested in separating bugs from the rest. Doesn't matter what the rest means in a particular case.

To not to wake up a click too far, it is good to script some tasks. Yes of course we can follow wizards, but some of us want to be warriorsJ. A small tip, take a look on credentials and system GUID examples. I don't know how about you, but for me it will be really useful in the future.    # credents$credential = Get-CredentialNew-SCRunAsAccount -Name "TESTDOMAIN\Administrator" -Credential $credential #storage $opsMgrServerCredential = Get-SCRunAsAccount -Name "TESTDOMAIN\Administrator"New-SCStorageClassification -Name "Bronze" -Description "" –RunAsynchronouslyNew-SCStorageClassification -Name "Silver" -Description "" –RunAsynchronouslyNew-SCStorageClassification -Name "Gold" -Description "" –RunAsynchronously # add a shared storageFind-SCComputer -ComputerName "dc.TESTDOMAIN.net"Add-SCStorageProvider -AddWindowsNativeWmiProvider -Name "dc.TESTDOMAIN.net" -RunAsAccount $opsMgrServerCredential -ComputerName "dc.TESTDOMAIN.net"$fileServer = Get-SCStorageFileServer "dc.TESTDOMAIN.net"$fileShares = @()$fileShares += Get-SCStorageFileShare -Name "VMMLibrary"Set-SCStorageFileServer -StorageFileServer $fileServer -AddStorageFileShareToManagement $fileShares –RunAsynchronously #fabric network$logicalNetwork = New-SCLogicalNetwork -Name "TESTDOMAIN-Service-Network" -LogicalNetworkDefinitionIsolation $false -EnableNetworkVirtualization $true -UseGRE $true -IsPVLAN $false$allHostGroups = @()$allHostGroups += Get-SCVMHostGroup -Name "All Hosts"$allSubnetVlan = @()$allSubnetVlan += New-SCSubnetVLan -Subnet "10.0.0.0/24" -VLanID 0New-SCLogicalNetworkDefinition -Name "TESTDOMAIN-Service-Network_0" -LogicalNetwork $logicalNetwork -VMHostGroup $allHostGroups -SubnetVLan $allSubnetVlan #IP pool$logicalNetwork = Get-SCLogicalNetwork -Name "TESTDOMAIN-Service-Network"$logicalNetworkDefinition = Get-SCLogicalNetworkDefinition -LogicalNetwork $logicalNetwork -Name "TESTDOMAIN-Service-Network_0" # Gateways$allGateways = @()$allGateways += New-SCDefaultGateway -IPAddress "10.0.0.1" –Automatic# DNS servers $allDnsServer = @("10.0.0.1")# DNS suffixes$allDnsSuffixes = @("TESTDOMAIN.net")# WINS servers$allWinsServers = @()New-SCStaticIPAddressPool -Name "TESTDOMAIN-Service-Network" -LogicalNetworkDefinition $logicalNetworkDefinition -Subnet "10.0.0.0/24" -IPAddressRangeStart "10.0.0.51" -IPAddressRangeEnd "10.0.0.75" -DefaultGateway $allGateways -DNSServer $allDnsServer -DNSSuffix "" -DNSSearchSuffix $allDnsSuffixes –RunAsynchronously #Hyper-V Virtual Networks$logicalNetwork = Get-SCLogicalNetwork -Name "TESTDOMAIN-Service-Network" $vmNetwork = New-SCVMNetwork -Name "TESTDOMAIN-VMN" -LogicalNetwork $logicalNetwork -IsolationType "WindowsNetworkVirtualization" -CAIPAddressPoolType "IPV4" -PAIPAddressPoolType "IPV4"Write-Output $vmNetwork$subnet = New-SCSubnetVLan -Subnet "10.0.0.0/24"New-SCVMSubnet -Name "Con-SN" -VMNetwork $vmNetwork -SubnetVLan $subnet # bind VLAN with the Network Adapter$vmHost = Get-SCVMHost -ComputerName "VMM01.TESTDOMAIN.net"$vmHostNetworkAdapter = Get-SCVMHostNetworkAdapter -VMHost $vmHost #-Name "Intel 21140-Based PCI Fast Ethernet Adapter (Emulated)"Set-SCVMHostNetworkAdapter -VMHostNetworkAdapter $vmHostNetworkAdapter -Description "" -AvailableForPlacement $true -UsedForManagement $true $logicalNetwork = Get-SCLogicalNetwork -Name "TESTDOMAIN-Service-Network" Set-SCVMHostNetworkAdapter -VMHostNetworkAdapter $vmHostNetworkAdapter -AddOrSetLogicalNetwork $logicalNetworkSet-SCVMHost -VMHost $vmHost -RunAsynchronously -NumaSpanningEnabled $true #Create a Private Cloud$Guid = [System.Guid]::NewGuid()Set-SCCloudCapacity -JobGroup $Guid -UseCustomQuotaCountMaximum $false -UseMemoryMBMaximum $false -UseCPUCountMaximum $false -UseStorageGBMaximum $false -UseVMCountMaximum $false -CustomQuotaCount 10 -MemoryMB 10240 -CPUCount 10 -StorageGB 386 -VMCount 10$resources = @()$resources += Get-SCLogicalNetwork -Name "TESTDOMAIN-Service-Network"$resources += Get-SCLoadBalancer -Manufacturer "Microsoft"$readonlyLibraryShares = @()$readonlyLibraryShares += Get-SCLibraryShare | where { $_.LibraryServer.Name -eq "dc.TESTDOMAIN.net" -and $_.Name -eq "VMMLibrary" }$addCapabilityProfiles = @()$addCapabilityProfiles += Get-SCCapabilityProfile -Name "Hyper-V"$Guid2 = [System.Guid]::NewGuid()Set-SCCloud -JobGroup $Guid2 -RunAsynchronously -AddCloudResource $resources -AddReadOnlyLibraryShare $readonlyLibraryShares -AddCapabilityProfile $addCapabilityProfiles$hostGroups = @()$hostGroups += Get-SCVMHostGroup -Name "TESTDOMAIN"New-SCCloud -VMHostGroup $hostGroups -Name "TESTDOMAIN-Cloud" -Description "" –RunAsynchronously

If you forgot to select some software at the "Software Selection" screen on a fresh install, what are the commands to install them after the fact. I know you can install them manually at anytime after everything is said and done, but what are the commands to install just as if you [*]starred them on that screen. For instance: sudo apt-get install lamp-server^ will install the LAMP Server. What are the commands for the DNS Server, Mail Server and Tomcat Java server?

On March 22, 2010, Google officially redirected all traffic from its Chinese mainland site to its uncensored Hong Kong site. Eight days later, all hits for Google and its other international sites ended in a DNS error for mainland Chinese netizens. Some fear the ban may be permanent.
