• Older PHP v/s newer PHP version [closed]

- by Monty
My company is building a website with database. Programmer's used PHP 5.0. My Service Provider (shared) in the meantime upgraded to PHP 5.3.0. Fixes have been on going and seem endless... Do I move to VPS and install older PHP or should we rebuild with newer PHP? When working remotely with programers what is the protocol regarding delivery of all code? Please what is the industry standard? I need an independent to review their work. How should this be approached?

• Customizing Texmaker

- by Gabriel Furstenheim
I use LaTeX a lot but I find quite obnoxious all the crappy files it leaves behind when you compile: .aux, .log... Fortunately TeXMaker has the option "clean" that deletes all of these. However, I don't like having to remember to click on it every time I'm going to close a document, ie I'd like a button that both closes a document and cleans all that stuff. Any hint as how to do it? I suppose if I knew how to access the program code I'd be able to do it as I'd just have to put together two options that already exist. Thanks

• Commenting/In-Code Documentation Styles

- by Maxpm
This might be a stupid question, but it's been in the back of my head for a while and I can't find a decent answer anywhere else. I have a teacher who says we should explicitly list each parameter with a description, even if there's only one. This leads to a lot of repetition: double MyFunction(const int MyParam); // Function: MyFunction // Summary: Does stuff with MyParam. // Input: int MyParam - The number to do stuff with. // Output: MyParam with stuff done to it. When writing in-code documentation, how detailed are you?

• Ways to prevent client seeing my code

- by James Eggers
I've got a bit of a strange problem.. Basically, I'm building a fairly complex (un-compiled, interpreted) program in Python. I've been working on most of this code for other purposes for a few months, and therefore don't want my client to be able to simple copy and paste it and then try and sell it (it's worth a fair amount). The other problem is that I need the script to run on a server that my client is paying for. Is there any way I can secure a particular folder on the machine from root access, make it so only one particular can access the directory? The OS is Ubuntu.

• What’s Wrong With This Code (#25)

The goal: create an extension method that will make it easy to create FormCollection objects. The method is a helper for unit testing ASP.NET MVC code. public static FormCollection ToFormCollection(this object data) { var namesAndValues = data.GetType() .GetProperties() .WhereValueIsNotDefaultValue(data) .ToNameValueCollection(data); return new FormCollection(namesAndValues); } The extension method itself relies on a couple private extension...Did you know that DotNetSlackers also publishes .net articles written by top known .net Authors? • Programming Language Family Tree?

- by user134353
As a man interested in programming, I must ask if there is a cataloged hierarchy of languages. I'd like to learn to actually understand what's happening- that is to say, I don't want to use a compiler until I understand what a compiler does and how to make my own. I really do want to start from total scratch. I'm told that means "machine code"? I don't know. What I do know is that "C++" is not the start. I'm not interested in learning that until I can actually break software down to its very base and see how the pieces go together.

• Do ALL your variables need to be declared private?

- by shovonr
I know that it's best practice to stay safe, and that we should always prevent others from directly accessing a class' properties. I hear this all the time from university professors, and I also see this all the time in a lot of source code released on the App Hub. In fact, professors say that they will actually take marks off for every variable that gets declared public. Now, this leaves me always declaring variables as private. No matter what. Even if each of these variables were to have both a getter and a setter. But here's the problem: it's tedious work. I tend to quickly loose interest in a project every time I need to have a variable in a class that could have simply been declared public instead of private with a getter and a setter. So my question is, do I really need to declare all my variables private? Or could I declare some variables public whenever they require both a getter and a setter?

• Improving python code

- by cobie
I just answered the question on project euler about finding circular primes below 1 million using python. My solution is below. I was able to reduce the running time of the solution from 9 seconds to about 3 seconds. I would like to see what else can be done to the code to reduce its running time further. This is strictly for educational purposes and for fun. import math import time def getPrimes(n): """returns set of all primes below n""" non_primes = [j for j in range(4, n, 2)] # 2 covers all even numbers for i in range(3, n, 2): non_primes.extend([j for j in range(i*2, n, i)]) return set([i for i in range(2, n)]) - set(non_primes) def getCircularPrimes(n): primes = getPrimes(n) is_circ = [] for prime in primes: prime_str = str(prime) iter_count = len(prime_str) - 1 rotated_num = [] while iter_count > 0: prime_str = prime_str[1:] + prime_str[:1] rotated_num.append(int(prime_str)) iter_count -= 1 if primes >= set(rotated_num): is_circ.append(prime) return len(is_circ)

• Blank lines between sourcecode [closed]

- by manix
I'm so confused with a strange behaviour. Actually I have edited some php files remotely with my PhpDesigner8 (a php editor). Everything goes right, but when my teammates reopen the files that I have edited the source code have blank lines like below: class AdminController extends Controller { function __construct() { parent::__construct(); if (!$this->session->can_admin()) { show_error('Solo para administradores.'); } $this->load->library('backend'); } } Instead of class AdminController extends Controller { function __construct() { parent::__construct(); if (!$this->session->can_admin()) { show_error('Solo para administradores.'); } $this->load->library('backend'); } } Did you have experience these kinds of problems?

• Multiple Google Analytics code for url under same domain

- by will.i.am
I have one domain, www.example.com, and www.example.com/sales. the analytic code on both urls are different. so when i login to google account, it will show two separate analytic accounts. on www.example.com/sales, i have a banner linked back to www.example.com. i clicked that banners, and i am sure there are other people have clicked the banner as well. but when i check the analytic of www.example.com, i don't see any thing come from my example.com/sales. I assume analytic on both urls are working, but why it doesn't track the visit from /sales. any idea??

• Avoid Code Repetition in Condition Statements

- by Ethosik
I have been programming for over 15 years now. I consider myself a very good programmer, but I understand (like all of us) there are things that I need to work on. One of these things is code repetition when dealing with conditions. I will give a generic sample: if(condition1) { //perform some logic if(condition2) { //perform some logic if(condition3) { //Perform logic } else { //MethodA(param) } } else { //MethodA(param) } } else { //MethodA() } Now, I cannot make it easy by doing the following: if(condition1 && condition2) { } else { } I cannot do this since I need to perform some logic if condition1 is true and before I test condition2. Is there a way to structure if...else blocks to where if you need to call a method in each else blocks, you are not repeating yourself?

• Code for Controlling the Bike in a bike game

- by user1489257
I'm new(ish) to Actionscript 3 and I was wondering what the code what would be like for controlling the bike in a game. I have a two main questions: Is Box2D the best physics engine to go with for this type of game? How would the animation of the bike work. Would I have to create a bike animation of the wheels moving and make it start and stop when the key to go forward is pressed. How would I go about it slowly stopping when the key to go forward is released? Thanks.

• How do you deal with monotony of certain tasks? [on hold]

- by aaronmallen
I love programming methods, and functions. The if {}, while {}, etc... logic behind them is so much fun. I also love making commits, merging branches, solving merge conflicts. Unfortunately these activities usually require that I create classes which I find tedious and monotonous. The simple action of defining properties, is getting in the way of me writing the logic on what to do with those properties. I can't be alone here there has to be a part of coding for everyone that they dread or at least severely dislike doing compared to other parts of coding. How do you deal with the code based tasks that you find tedious?

• Error Handling in T-SQL Scalar Function

- by hydroparadise
Ok.. this question could easily take multiple paths, so I will hit the more specific path first. While working with SQL Server 2005, I'm trying to create a scalar funtion that acts as a 'TryCast' from varchar to int. Where I encounter a problem is when I add a TRY block in the function; CREATE FUNCTION u_TryCastInt ( @Value as VARCHAR(MAX) ) RETURNS Int AS BEGIN DECLARE @Output AS Int BEGIN TRY SET @Output = CONVERT(Int, @Value) END TRY BEGIN CATCH SET @Output = 0 END CATCH RETURN @Output END Turns out theres all sorts of things wrong with this statement including "Invalid use of side-effecting or time-dependent operator in 'BEGIN TRY' within a function" and "Invalid use of side-effecting or time-dependent operator in 'END TRY' within a function". I can't seem to find any examples of using try statements within a scalar function, which got me thinking, is error handling in a function is possible? The goal here is to make a robust version of the Convert or Cast functions to allow a SELECT statement carry through depsite conversion errors. For example, take the following; CREATE TABLE tblTest ( f1 VARCHAR(50) ) GO INSERT INTO tblTest(f1) VALUES('1') INSERT INTO tblTest(f1) VALUES('2') INSERT INTO tblTest(f1) VALUES('3') INSERT INTO tblTest(f1) VALUES('f') INSERT INTO tblTest(f1) VALUES('5') INSERT INTO tblTest(f1) VALUES('1.1') SELECT CONVERT(int,f1) AS f1_num FROM tblTest DROP TABLE tblTest It never reaches point of dropping the table because the execution gets hung on trying to convert 'f' to an integer. I want to be able to do something like this; SELECT u_TryCastInt(f1) AS f1_num FROM tblTest fi_num __________ 1 2 3 0 5 0 Any thoughts on this? Is there anything that exists that handles this? Also, I would like to try and expand the conversation to support SQL Server 2000 since Try blocks are not an option in that scenario. Thanks in advance.

• How to convert datatable to json string using json.net?

- by Pandiya Chendur
How to convert datatable to json using json.net? Any suggestion... I ve downloaded the necessary binaries... Which class should i use to get the conversion of my datatable to json? Thus far used this method to get json string by passing my datatable... public string GetJSONString(DataTable table) { StringBuilder headStrBuilder = new StringBuilder(table.Columns.Count * 5); //pre-allocate some space, default is 16 bytes for (int i = 0; i < table.Columns.Count; i++) { headStrBuilder.AppendFormat("\"{0}\" : \"{0}{1}¾\",", table.Columns[i].Caption, i); } headStrBuilder.Remove(headStrBuilder.Length - 1, 1); // trim away last , StringBuilder sb = new StringBuilder(table.Rows.Count * 5); //pre-allocate some space sb.Append("{\""); sb.Append(table.TableName); sb.Append("\" : ["); for (int i = 0; i < table.Rows.Count; i++) { string tempStr = headStrBuilder.ToString(); sb.Append("{"); for (int j = 0; j < table.Columns.Count; j++) { table.Rows[i][j] = table.Rows[i][j].ToString().Replace("'", ""); tempStr = tempStr.Replace(table.Columns[j] + j.ToString() + "¾", table.Rows[i][j].ToString()); } sb.Append(tempStr + "},"); } sb.Remove(sb.Length - 1, 1); // trim last , sb.Append("]}"); return sb.ToString(); } Now i thought of using json.net but dont know where to get started....

• Explicit casting doesn't work in default model binding

- by Felix
I am using ASP.NET MVC2 and Entity Framework. I am going to simplify the situation a little; hopefully it will make it clearer, not more confusing! I have a controller action to create address, and the country is a lookup table (in other words, there is a one-to-many relationship between Country and Address classes). Let's say for clarity that the field in the Address class is called Address.Land. And, for the purposes of the dropdown list, I am getting Country.CountryID and Country.Name. I am aware of Model vs. Input validation. So, if I call the dropdown field formLand - I can make it work. But if I call the field Land (that is, matching the variable in Address class) - I am getting the following error: "The parameter conversion from type 'System.String' to type 'App.Country' failed because no type converter can convert between these types." OK, this makes sense. A string (CountryID) comes from the form and the binder doesn't know how to convert it to Country type. So, I wrote the converter: namespace App { public partial class Country { public static explicit operator Country(string countryID) { AppEntities context = new AppEntities(); Country country = (Country) context.GetObjectByKey( new EntityKey("AppEntities.Countries", "CountryID", countryID)); return country; } } } FWIW, I tried both explicit and implicit. I tested it from the controller - Country c = (Country)"fr" - and it works fine. However, it never got invoked when the View is posted. I am getting the same "no type converter" error in the model. Any ideas how to hint to the model binder that there is a type converter? Thanks

• Convert RGB value to HSV

- by marionmaiden
I've found a method on the Internet to convert RGB values to HSV values. Unfortunately, when the values are R=G=B, I'm getting a NaN, because of the 0/0 operation. Do you know if there is an implemented method for this conversion in Java, or what do I have to do when I get the 0/0 division to get the right value of the HSV? Here comes my method, adapted from some code on the Internet: public static double[] RGBtoHSV(double r, double g, double b){ double h, s, v; double min, max, delta; min = Math.min(Math.min(r, g), b); max = Math.max(Math.max(r, g), b); // V v = max; delta = max - min; // S if( max != 0 ) s = delta / max; else { s = 0; h = -1; return new double[]{h,s,v}; } // H if( r == max ) h = ( g - b ) / delta; // between yellow & magenta else if( g == max ) h = 2 + ( b - r ) / delta; // between cyan & yellow else h = 4 + ( r - g ) / delta; // between magenta & cyan h *= 60; // degrees if( h < 0 ) h += 360; return new double[]{h,s,v}; }

• Help with debugging COM errors? (.mdi to .pdf file conversions using Microsoft Office Document Imagi

- by RyanW
I thought I had a working solution for converting .mdi files to PDF using the Microsoft Office Document Imaging object model. The solution is in a Windows Service, but now I'm running into some errors that I'm having trouble tracking down info on. The exception I get is: The server threw an exception. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x80010105 (RPC_E_SERVERFAULT)) System.Runtime.InteropServices.COMException (0x80010105): The server threw an exception. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x80010105 (RPC_E_SERVERFAULT)) at MODI.DocumentClass.Create(String FileOpen) at DocumentStore.Mdi2PDF(String path, String newPath) Then, in the Event Viewer there is the following Application error: Faulting application MyWindowsServiceName.exe, version 1.0.0.0, time stamp 0x4b97f185, faulting module mso.dll, version 12.0.6425.1000, time stamp 0x49d65443, exception code 0xc0000005, fault offset 0x0000bd8e, process id 0xa5c, application start time 0x01cac08cf032914b. Here's the method that is doing the conversion: private int? Mdi2PDF(String path, String newPath) { int? pageCount = null; string tmpTif = Path.GetTempFileName(); MODI.Document mdiDoc = new MODI.Document(); mdiDoc.Create(path); mdiDoc.SaveAs(tmpTif, MODI.MiFILE_FORMAT.miFILE_FORMAT_TIFF_LOSSLESS, MODI.MiCOMP_LEVEL.miCOMP_LEVEL_HIGH); mdiDoc.Close(false); pageCount = Tiff2PDF(tmpTif, newPath); if (File.Exists(tmpTif)) File.Delete(tmpTif); return pageCount; } I removed all threading from the service invoking this, so that only the primary thread was initializing the MODI object, but still got the error, so it doesn't appear to be threading related. I also built a a console apps converting hundreds of documents and DID NOT get the exception. So, it seems to be caused by creating too many instances of the MODI object, but only instantiated within a Service? Doesn't quite make sense. Anybody have any clues about these errors and how to debug them further?

• Java SortedMap to Scala TreeMap

- by Dave
I'm having trouble converting a java SortedMap into a scala TreeMap. The SortedMap comes from deserialization and needs to be converted into a scala structure before being used. Some background, for the curious, is that the serialized structure is written through XStream and on desializing I register a converter that says anything that can be assigned to SortedMap[Comparable[_],_] should be given to me. So my convert method gets called and is given an Object that I can safely cast because I know it's of type SortedMap[Comparable[_],_]. That's where it gets interesting. Here's some sample code that might help explain it. // a conversion from comparable to ordering scala> implicit def comparable2ordering[A <: Comparable[A]](x: A): Ordering[A] = new Ordering[A] { | def compare(x: A, y: A) = x.compareTo(y) | } comparable2ordering: [A <: java.lang.Comparable[A]](x: A)Ordering[A] // jm is how I see the map in the converter. Just as an object. I know the key // is of type Comparable[_] scala> val jm : Object = new java.util.TreeMap[Comparable[_], String]() jm: java.lang.Object = {} // It's safe to cast as the converter only gets called for SortedMap[Comparable[_],_] scala> val b = jm.asInstanceOf[java.util.SortedMap[Comparable[_],_]] b: java.util.SortedMap[java.lang.Comparable[_], _] = {} // Now I want to convert this to a tree map scala> collection.immutable.TreeMap() ++ (for(k <- b.keySet) yield { (k, b.get(k)) }) <console>:15: error: diverging implicit expansion for type Ordering[A] starting with method Tuple9 in object Ordering collection.immutable.TreeMap() ++ (for(k <- b.keySet) yield { (k, b.get(k)) })

• Image File In Text Editor - What Are The Characters? What's the Process?

• Convert float to decimal in Informix

- by prabhu
I have a table with a column of type decimal. There is a ESQL/C structure that represents the table. It has a member of type decimal. I also have a normal C structure for equivalent for the same table. The type of the above mentioned field is a float. Since we use memcpy to copy data to and from ESQL/C structure to C structure, there is an issue with decimal to float conversion. When I searched the Informix ESQL/C Programmer's manual, I couldn't find any function that can do this. Google search led me to the deccvflt() function. This function converts from a float to a decimal type. Though I couldn't find this function listed in the manual, I see the declarations in decimal.h. Are these functions still recommended to be used? Alternatively, I was also thinking about using the decimal type in the C structure also, as it happens to be a C structure. This way, I can still use the memcpy right? Please share your thoughts. IBM Informix Dynamic Server Version 11.50.FC3 Thanks, prabhu

• Converting an int64 value to a Number object in JavaScript

- by Matt
I have a COM object which has a method that returns an unsigned int64 (VT_UI8) value. We have an HTML page which contains some JavaScript which can load the COM object and make the call to that method, to retrieve the value as such: var foo = MyCOMObject.GetInt64Value(); This value can easily be displayed to the user in a message dialog using: alert(foo); or displayed on the page by: document.getElementById('displayToUser').innerHTML = foo; However, we cannot use this value as a Number (e.g. if we try to multiply it by 2) without the page throwing "Number expected" errors. If we check "typeof(foo)" it returns "unknown". I've found a workaround for this by doing the following: document.getElementById('displayToUser').innerHTML = foo; var bar = parseInt(document.getElementById('displayToUser').innerHTML); alert(bar*2); What I need to know is how to make that process more efficient. Specifically, is there a way to cast foo to a String explicitly, rather than having to set some document element's innerHTML to foo and then retrieve it from that. I wouldn't mind calling something like: alert(parseInt((string)foo) * 2); Even better would be if there is a way to directly convert the int64 to a Number, without going through the String conversion, but I hold out less hope for that.

• How to scan convert right edges and slopes less than one?

- by Zachary
I'm writing a program which will use scan conversion on triangles to fill in the pixels contained within the triangle. One thing that has me confused is how to determine the x increment for the right edge of the triangle, or for slopes less than or equal to one. Here is the code I have to handle left edges with a slope greater than one (obtained from Computer Graphics: Principles and Practice second edition): for(y=ymin;y<=ymax;y++) { edge.increment+=edge.numerator; if(edge.increment>edge.denominator) { edge.x++; edge.increment -= edge.denominator; } } The numerator is set from (xMax-xMin), and the denominator is set from (yMax-yMin)...which makes sense as it represents the slope of the line. As you move up the scan lines (represented by the y values). X is incremented by 1/(denomniator/numerator) ...which results in x having a whole part and a fractional part. If the fractional part is greater than one, then the x value has to be incremented by 1 (as shown in edge.incrementedge.denominator). This works fine for any left handed lines with a slope greater than one, but I'm having trouble generalizing it for any edge, and google-ing has proved fruitless. Does anyone know the algorithm for that?
