• Within a DLL, how is the function table structured?

  I've been looking into the implementation of a device library that doesn't explicitly support my operating system. In particular, I have a disassembled DLL, and a fair amount of supporting source code. Now, how is the function table/export table structured? My understanding is that the first structure of the .data section is a table of VRAs. Next is a table of strings linked by index to that first address table. This makes sense to me, as a linker could translate between symbols and addresses. How do functions referenced by ordinals fit into this picture? How does one know which function has such and such ordinal number, and how does the linker resolve this? In other words, given that some other DLL imports SOME_LIBRARY_ordinal_7, how does the linker know which function to work with? Thanks, all! edit More information... In particular, I see something like: extern FTD2XX_Ordinal_28: near how might I go about determining which function is being referenced, and how does the linker do this?

• Entity Framework Decorator Pattern

  In my line of business we have Products. These products can be modified by a user by adding Modifications to them. Modifications can do things such as alter the price and alter properties of the Product. This, to me, seems to fit the Decorator pattern perfectly. Now, envision a database in which Products exist in one table and Modifications exist in another table and the database is hooked up to my app through the Entity Framework. How would I go about getting the Product objects and the Modification objects to implement the same interface so that I could use them interchangeably? For instance, the kind of things I would like to be able to do: Given a Modification object, call .GetNumThings(), which would then return the number of things in the original object, plus or minus the number of things added by the modification. This question may be stemming from a pretty serious lack of exposure to the nitty-gritty of EF (all of my experience so far has been pretty straight-forward LOB Silverlight apps), and if that's the case, please feel free to tell me to RTFM. • Is there an efficient algorithm to distribute resources in a way that both avoids conflict and allows bias?

  Background (Skip this if you only care about the algorithm) At the university where I work, one of the biggest hassles in our department is classroom scheduling. For illustration purposes and to lay out the scope of the problem, here's how we do scheduling now: Professors give us a list of the classes they're teaching with the time slots they'd prefer to teach, ranked in order of priority (most desired to least desired). Administration gives us a list of the rooms we may assign along with the times those rooms are available for our department's use. We start assigning professors to rooms trying (at first) to take into account the preferences of the various professors. Inevitably, conflicts arise, professors start asking for changes, and the plan falls to pieces somewhere around professor number 30, at which point we start assigning rooms basically wherever we can fit them in, crumpled pieces of paper are everywhere, and nobody's happy. (If you've ever wondered why your class was at 9.30 in the morning on Thursday but 4 pm every other day, now you know) I have been asked to quietly investigate whether software could do this more optimally. The Actual Question Is there an algorithm to efficiently schedule a set of resources such that the following criteria are met: The algorithm must never assign two professors to the same room at the same time. The task is not complete until every professor has been assigned a room / time. The algorithm need not worry about having too many professors for the amount of time slots available. (We're not that well funded.) As much as is possible the algorithm should respect the scheduling preferences of the individual professors. I feel like I can't be the first one to ask this. Is there a efficient algorithm for this, or is this the sort of problem that can only be brute-forced?

• REST design: what verb and resource name to use for a filtering service

  I am developing a cleanup/filtering service that has a method that receives a list of objects serialized in xml, and apply some filtering rules to return a subset of those objects. In a REST-ful service, what verb shall I use for such a method? I thought that GET is a natural choice, but I have to put the serialized XML in the body of the request which works but feels incorrect. The other verbs don't seem to fit semantically. What is a good way to define that Service interface? Naming the resource /Cleanup or /Filter seems weird mainly because in the examples I see online, it is always a name rather than a verb being used for resource name. Am I right to feel that REST services are better suited for CRUD operations and you start bending the rules in situations like this service? If yes, am I then making a wrong architectural choice. I've pushed to develop this service in REST-ful style (as opposed to SOAP) for simplicity, but such awkward cases happen a lot and make me feel like I am missing something. Either choosing REST where it shouldn't be used or may be over-thinking some stuff that doesn't really matter? In that case, what really matters?

• C++ AMP, for loops to parallel_for_each loop

  I'm converting an algorithm to make use of the massive acceleration that C++ AMP provides. The stage I'm at is putting the for loops into the known parallel_for_each loop. Normally this should be a straightforward task to do but it appears more complex then I first thought. It's a nested loop which I increment using steps of 4 per iterations: for(int j = 0; j < height; j += 4, data += width * 4 * 4) { for(int i = 0; i < width; i += 4) { The trouble I'm having is the use of the index. I can't seem to find a way to properly fit this into the parallel_for_each loop. Using an index of rank 2 is the way to go but manipulating it via branching will do harm to the performance gain. I found a similar post: Controlling the index variables in C++ AMP. It also deals about index manipulation but the increment aspect doesn't cover my issue. With kind regards, Forcecast

• SQL - Query range between two dates (NON-VBA)

  I see various topics on this around stack overflow but none that fit the contect of MS-Access... Given a starting date and an ending date, is there a way through SQL to return records for each given month within the time frame? EG: Between #1/1/2010# and #12/31/2010# results #1/4/2010# #1/11/2010# ..... #12/27/2010# Restrictions MS-Access 2003 :No Case/Loops inside the SQL (IIF statements are good) This is a view only, NO VBA will be used since the data will not be tampered with. Disconnected recordset is my last option. I would prefer to find out theres some way to call your customized functions in the SQL to help return these values... some class stored on a global scope while you iterate through this date range maybe... Is this possible? I see many no's, but if there was a way to pass a value into a function I could find a way to make this work. Sad that I don't have a way to simulate a stored procedure without using a d/c recordset, at least that I know of... any experts out there know a way?

• MS 70-536 .NET Framework Foundation - info on Exam? Especially regex?

  Hi, I know there are already some questions about this, but not that specific. I have the self-paced training kit and worked through the test exam tool that is on the CD coming with the book. I constantly fail on the test tool, mostly on the regex questions. I'm not a regex guru. In fact my regex-fu is more than weak. I know what regex'es are, how I can use them and where my 'Regular expressions - kurz und gut' book is in my drawer in case I really need them. And to be honest I feel like learning regex is a total waste of time, because if I need them I have either a colleague that is fit and can do them in just a few seconds or I need my book and get them right in a still fair amount of time. And from my experience I can tell that I need regex like once in two or three years. So just putting in a lot of time into learning just the expressions to pass the exam is.. something I like not to have to do. Can you tell me something about the real exam vs. the test exam tool on the book and about the need to know regex for passing it? Thank you for your time. Marked as Community Wiki. Hope that fits?

• Is it possible to anti alias using Copy swap effect?

  I'm developing an application in VB.Net using Managed DirectX that runs in windowed mode and renders onto a picture box that is smaller than the form. Whenever I resize the form, the back buffer is streched to fit the picture box. This is not what I would like. The backbuffer size is the same as screen size, however, I only want to render a part of the back buffer, whose size is controlled by the size of the picture box into which I'm rendering. Resetting the device with new presentation parameters is something I would like to avoid. I'm aware that I can use an overload of Device.Present if I set the swap effect to copy, but this doesn't allow me to use Multi Sample Anti Alias (which requires the Discard swap effect). It seems to me that the overload Device.Present is not usable with any other swap effect than copy, and throws an exception. An other alternative I considered is the PresentFlags.DeviceClip, however it seems that it works only for Windows XP. I'm using Windows 7 and it doesn't seem to be doing anything. So, is it even possible that I use anti-aliasing in this situation?

  Per my SO question here, which has turned to jquery to solve this, but which may be worked back into YUI if I get my thinking straight, I need a selector to exclude descendents. • CSS issue with multi-accordion

  Alright, I got some help earlier with this, but it never truly got resolved. I'm pretty sure I'm having a CSS issue, but I just can't figure out how to correct it. Currently, I have these accordions working perfectly, they collapse, expand, expand again when told to etc. The problem I'm having is aligning the content within these accordion divs. Ideally, when everything is default (collapsed) all I want seen is the thumbnail image and the Headline. Then if the user wishes, they click on the headline and it expands and if they want to make a comment or view comments, they can click once again to expand that. Here's the thing, I have to make the height 62px so everything will fit in and just not float all over the place. This creates a problem with the "View Comments" to "Text Here" area, as you can tell it has outrageous space between the two. The other issue is, as I currently have it I'm forcefully indenting the article text so that it doesn't TEXT WRAP underneath the thumbnail image. Basically, I want it split into 2 columns so nothing ever goes beneath the image, but working with this accordion and divs inside the divs it's proving to be difficult for me. • How best to organize projects folders for unit tests in .NET?

  So I'm trying to introduce unit testing to my group. I've successfully upgraded a VS'05 web site project to a VS'08 web application, and now have a solution with the web app project and a unit test project. The issue now is how to fit this back into the source repository such that we don't break the build system and the unit test projects are persisted as well. Right now we have something like this: c:\root c:\root\projectA c:\root\projectB c:\root\projectC where projectA contains the sln file and all other related files/folders for the project. Now I have this new solution that looks like this: c:\root\projectA (parent folder) c:\root\projectA\projectA (the production code project) c:\root\projectA\projectA_Test (the unit test project) c:\root\projectA\TestResults c:\root\projecta\projectA.sln How do I integrate this new structure back into the code repository? I'd really prefer to keep the production code folder where it was in the source repository for the sake of the build, but is this necessary? If I keep the production code project in its usual place then where do I keep my unit test projects and how do I connect them with a sln file? Is it better to use this new structure and adjust the build process? I'd love to hear how other people are dealing with this issue of upgrading legacy projects to unit testing.

  To me, writing a new program is like a puzzle. Before you write any code for a large system, you have to carefully craft each piece in your mind and imagine how all the pieces will fit together. If you don't, your solution may end up being undefined. What I mean is, I often don't know what I'm doing so I'll come to this site and beg for a code snippet, and then somehow try to hack it into my projects. I started writing GW-Basic when I was around 8 years old. Then it progressed from there, went to california university and did some Python and C++, but really didn't learn anything(college = highsk00l++). I've mostly been self-taught, took awhile to break bad habits and I'd say only in recent years would I consider myself understanding of design patterns and all that stuff (no but honestly procedural dudes, I would not want to design and maintain a large system procedurally, yous crazy). And despite my username, money has NOT been a big motivator. I've gone from job to job, I can usually get the work done perfect very quickly, any delays on my part are understandable (well about as understandable as it gets in the industry). But I ain't gonna work for peanuts because I got mouths to feed. Why do you program? Why do you do what you do?

• Chat app vs REST app - use a thread in an Activity or a thread in a Service?

  In Virgil Dobjanschi's talk, "Developing Android REST client applications" (link here), he said a few things that took me by surprise. Including: Don't run http queries in threads spawned by your activities. Instead, communicate with a service to do them, and store the information in a ContentProvider. Use a ContentObserver to be notified of changes. Always perform long running tasks in a Service, never in your Activity. Stop your Service when you're done with it. I understand that he was talking about a REST API, but I'm trying to make it fit with some other ideas I've had for apps. One of APIs I've been using uses long-polling for their chat interface. There is a loop http queries, most of which will time out. This means that, as long as the app hasn't been killed by the OS, or the user hasn't specifically turned off the chat feature, I'll never be done with the Service, and it will stay open forever. This seems less than optimal. Long question short: For a chat application that uses long polling to simulate push and immediate response, is it still best practice to use a Service to perform the HTTP queries, and store the information in a ContentProvider?

• Full and Partial Matching of Sets

  I have several sets of the same type [Y, M, D] and am trying to write a function to search these sets and return an array of the available sets that fit my parameters. ReturnedSets = return_matches(Y,M,D); I want the three parameters of the function return_matches to be optional. Which means any combination of values can be used to return the sets. For example, one could write - return_matches(13,null,2); - and the function would look for all sets that contain [13, anyValue, 2]; I'm writing this in PHP, to allow users to manage dated files on my website, but I'd like to be able to use this function again for other uses. Thanks! edit: (This, or variations of this, is all I can come up with so far... • iPhone rotation woes

  I have been spending many frustrating hours trying to get rotations working on the iPhone version of Tunepal. Firstly, I have a tab bar controller, with a navigation controller controlling each of the views. I actually only want one of my views to be able to rotate and that is the TuneDisplay. I have a subclassed the UITabBarController and overridden theshouldAutorotateToInterfaceOrientation: (BOOL)shouldAutorotateToInterfaceOrientation:(UIInterfaceOrientation) interfaceOrientation { if (self.selectedViewController != nil) { return [self.selectedViewController shouldAutorotateToInterfaceOrientation:interfaceOrientation]; } else { return (interfaceOrientation == UIInterfaceOrientationPortrait); } } In each of the view controllers for each of the tabs I have overridden the method and returned YES for each orientation I want to support. All well and good and everything works as it should. If I try and do a rotation on a tab that doesn’t support the rotation, nothing happens. The problem occurs if I move from a tab thats rotated to a tab that isnt supposed to support that rotation. The new tab is displayed rotated too! I have tried the unsupported setOrientation trick, but firstly it doesnt work correctly and secondly I received a warning from Apple for including it in my last build. If (as I suspect) there is no way to limit this behavior: How do I make the microphone image scale when I rotate the device? How do I make the buttons and the progress bar expand to fit the witdh of the toolbar? Also, one of the tabs that rotates ok has a table, with a search bar. The first time I rotate to the right or to the left, I get a black bar to the right of the search bar. If I subsequently rotate back and rotate again, the bar disappears! I have enabled the struts and springs things on the search bar in the interface builder and it looks like it should behave correctly. Any ideas about how to fix this? • How can I hide this overlay element intelligently?

  The site I'm working on has a collection of navigation elements across the top ("Products", "Company", etc.). When you mouse over the Products link, an overlay appears that shows a list of products with links to each. There's a small link at the top of the container that, when clicked, closes the container. All of this works as advertised. The client has asked that, once a user's mouse pointer is a sufficient distance from the overlay element, the overlay element would close (without them having to click the 'close' link). This element appears on multiple pages that have disparate content, so I'm afraid it won't be as simple as adding a mouseover listener to another single element within the page and have it work everywhere. My question, I suppose, is this: is there a relatively easy way to know when the mouse cursor is x pixels away from this container and trigger an event when this occurs? My other thought is that I could just find several elements on the page that fit this criteria and add mouseover listeners to each, but I'm assuming there's a more elegant way of handling this. Thanks in advance - and please let me know if more detail is needed.

• Structuring iPhone/iPad application views

  I have an idea about an application that I want to build and Im new to iPhone/iPad development (but not new to development in other languages/frameworks such as .NET and Java). I want to layout some views on the screen so that they animate (slide in) from different directions into their places. The question is about the strucuture of the application, if I have say 4 rectanglular areas on the screen that contain business data, such as contacts (name, photo, etc...) and they all take up different widths of the screen (say the first contact takes up one row of the screen, but the next 2 take up half the width of the next row each, and so on). Should I create a custom view for the different sized contact views, (i.e. LargeCustomView and SmallCustomView, and any other special type that I make) or should it all be one type, say, CustomerDetailsView which could be stretched to fit at design time? Also, if there were, say, 3 different instances of the same custom view on the one screen, are there 3 instances of the view controller also? Im a little confused about powering the data behind a view, can someone shed some light on this for me? Do I just set the properties (say an instance variable ContactForView) on the view controller for each instance? Thanks for any help you can give Cheers, Mark

  I'm a bit confused by the proper frame sizing of a table view to fit within my screen. Here's my setup of view controllers within view controllers: UITabBarController UINavigationController as one of the tab bar viewcontrollers; title bar hidden ViewController - a container view controller because I need the option to place some controls beneath the UITableView, sometimes (but not in the current scenario) UITableViewController Now, my question is what the proper frame dimensions of the UITableview should be. Here's what I've got in the ViewController viewDidLoad method. I used subtracted 49.0 (the size of the tab bar) from 480.0. However, this leaves a black bar at the bottom. 20.0 appears to do it (coincidentally?) the size of the status bar, but I don't understand why that would be. So, I might display 20 products, which I'd like to possibly display 5 products per "row" on a wide screen, then 4 products per "row" on a slightly less wide screen, then 3, then 2, then 1. • How to speed up drawing of scaled image? Audio playback chokes during window resize.

  I am writing an audio player for OSX. One view is a custom view that displays a waveform. The waveform is stored as a instance variable of type NSImage with an NSBitmapImageRep. The view also displays a progress indicator (a thick red line). Therefore, it is updated/redrawn every 30 milliseconds. Since it takes a rather long time to recalculate the image, I do that in a background thread after every window resize and update the displayed image once the new image is ready. In the meantime, the original image is scaled to fit the view like this: // The drawing rectangle is slightly smaller than the view, defined by // the two margins. NSRect drawingRect; drawingRect.origin = NSMakePoint(sideEdgeMarginWidth, topEdgeMarginHeight); drawingRect.size = NSMakeSize([self bounds].size.width-2*sideEdgeMarginWidth, [self bounds].size.height-2*topEdgeMarginHeight); [waveform drawInRect:drawingRect fromRect:NSZeroRect operation:NSCompositeSourceOver fraction:1]; The view makes up the biggest part of the window. During live resize, audio starts choking. Selecting the "big" graphic card on my Macbook Pro makes it less bad, but not by much. CPU utilization is somewhere around 20-40% during live resizes. Instruments suggests that rescaling/redrawing of the image is the problem. Once I stop resizing the window, CPU utilization goes down and audio stops glitching. I already tried to disable image interpolation to speed up the drawing like this: [[NSGraphicsContext currentContext] setImageInterpolation:NSImageInterpolationNone]; That helps, but audio still chokes during live resizes. Do you have an idea how to improve this? The main thing is to prevent the audio from choking.

• Deleting unneeded rows from a table with 2 criteria

  Hello. I have a many-to-many relations table and I need to DELETE the unneeded rows. The lastviews table's structure is: | user (int) | document (int) | time (datetime) | This table logs the last users which viewed the document. (user, document) is unique. I show only the last 10 views of a document and until now I deleted the unneeded like this: DELETE FROM `lastviews` WHERE `document` = ? AND `user` NOT IN (SELECT * FROM (SELECT `user` FROM `lastviews` WHERE `document` = ? ORDER BY `time` DESC LIMIT 10) AS TAB) However, now I need to also show the last 5 documents a user has viewed. This means I can no longer delete rows using the previous query because it might delete information I need (say a user didn't view documents in 5 minutes and the rows are deleted) To sum up, I need to delete all the records that don't fit these 2 criterias: SELECT ... FROM `lastviews` WHERE `document` = ? ORDER BY `time` DESC LIMIT 10 and SELECT * FROM `lastviews` WHERE `user` = ? ORDER BY `time` DESC LIMIT 0, 5 I need the logic. Thanks in advance.

  I am looking for a pre-built Java data structure with the following characteristics: It should look something like an ArrayList but should allow indexing via double-precision rather than integers. Note that this means that it's likely that you'll see indicies that don't line up with the original data points (i.e., asking for the value that corresponds to key "1.5"). As a consequence, the value returned will likely be interpolated. For example, if the key is 1.5, the value returned could be the average of the value at key 1.0 and the value at key 2.0. The keys will be sorted but the values are not ensured to be monotonically increasing. In fact, there's no assurance that the first derivative of the values will be continuous (making it a poor fit for certain types of splines). Freely available code only, please. For clarity, I know how to write such a thing. In fact, we already have an implementation of this and some related data structures in legacy code that I want to replace due to some performance and coding issues. What I'm trying to avoid is spending a lot of time rolling my own solution when there might already be such a thing in the JDK, Apache Commons or another standard library. Frankly, that's exactly the approach that got this legacy code into the situation that it's in right now.... Is there such a thing out there in a freely available library?

• Nested Lambdas in wxHaskell Library

  I've been trying to figure out how I can make staticText elements resize to fit their contents with wxHaskell. From what I can tell, this is the default behavior in wxWidgets, but the wxHaskell wrapper specifically disables this behavior. However, the library code that creates new elements has me very confused. Can anyone provide an explanation for what this code does? staticText :: Window a -> [Prop (StaticText ())] -> IO (StaticText ()) staticText parent props = feed2 props 0 $ initialWindow $ \id rect -> initialText $ \txt -> \props flags -> do t <- staticTextCreate parent id txt rect flags {- (wxALIGN_LEFT + wxST_NO_AUTORESIZE) -} set t props return t I know that feed2 x y f = f x y, and that the type signature of initialWindow is initialWindow :: (Id -> Rect -> [Prop (Window w)] -> Style -> a) -> [Prop (Window w)] -> Style -> a and the signature of initialText is initialText :: Textual w => (String -> [Prop w] -> a) -> [Prop w] -> a but I just can't wrap my head around all the lambdas.

• PHP include taking too long

  I have a php file with around 100mb which is full of arrays (only arrays). I've made a script that includes this file (for processing), first it exhausted the default Xampp 128mb memory limit, i've raised it to 1024mb but it just takes forever and doesn't do anything. I'm sure the problem is being created by the sheer size of the file because i've tried removing all lines of code and just leaving the include and an echo for me to know when it finishes executing, and it does the same thing (which is taking forever), i've also tried to run the 100mb file in separate and same thing again. A 10mb file is taking forever as well but a similar 1mb file is almost instantly read and executed so the problem must be more than just the file size. I was avoiding using c++ for a simple project as this and would rather not to as php is easier for me and the task that will be executed doesn't need to benefit from the added speed that it would have if it had been done in c++ but if i have no luck in solving this problem i guess i'll have to. EDIT Reasons for not using a database: 1-Whoever made it didn't used a database and it will be pretty hard to store this in an organized database if i'm not able to do something with it first, like just reading it, copying parts from it or putting in memory or something. 2-I don't have experience working with databases as pretty much all stuff i've ever done in php didn't needed large amounts of stored data, 50kb at best, if i was thinking about a big project or huge chunks of data as this one, i definitely would, but i didn't made this mess to start with and now i have to undo it. 3-The logic for having to store a small portion of data like 10mb in hard drive when now every computer has pretty much enough ram to fit the whole OS in it is pretty much incomprehensible unless someone gives a good explanation about it, if i had to access a lot of said files simultaneously i would understand but like i said, this is a simple project, this is the only file that will be accessed at a given time this isn't even to make some kind of website, it's to run a few times and be done with it.
