• Creating an online community - use templates or self-develop?

  PHPMotion, Joomla or develop my own? I'm thinking of developing a common interest online community. It will be have UGC, stats, etc.. functionality, and perhaps an online store. Though cost is an issue at this time, I want to be professional and effective. Should I use existing free platform templates, like PHP, Joomla, or should I develop my own? What are the advantages/disadvantages of either option? As a rough estimate, how much will it cost me to develop and manage my own? And how long will it take. In general what should I be careful about on this journey?

• Some help understanding and modifying a 2D shader

  I have a similar question as the one posed here, except that I don't wish to use a 1D Color Palette. I simply wish to have it display 1 color of my choosing (red, for example). I plan to use this as a "shield" effect for a 2D ship. I also wish to understand how it works a little bit better, as I'll be the first to admit that shaders in general are not my strongest suit. I'm not asking for an overview of HLSL (as that is too broad of a subject), just an explanation of how this shader works, and the best way to implement it in a 2D game. Code examples would be ideal (even if they are theoretical) but if the answer is explained well enough, I might be able to manage with plain old text. This is also in XNA 4.0. Thanks in advance.

• Disable Alt for window move in gnome-shell

  There are lots of posts on this about Unity, this is about gnome-shell As with other posters, I use apps (Inkscape in particular) that uses Alt-Click and Alt-drag. Gnome-shell is grabbing this off me and thus disabling features in the application. I have tried using ccsm's Move plugin - you can turn this off and you still get Alt-drag window moving. using gconf editor to change /apps/metacity/general/mouse_button_modifier - this has no effect AFAICS. It's really hindering me. Otherwise I find gnome-shell a really productive environment.

• Lost sudo privileges

  Last night I was working on installing vsftpd on my Ubuntu 12.10 server. I shutdown last night and when I booted up this morning I seemed to have lost the abilities to sudo anything. It just says, "** is not in the sudoers file. This incident will be reported." Now I wasn't messing with any sudo files, just /etc/vsftpd.confg and /etc/shells. So how did I seemingly lose sudo ability? I'm rather new to Linux in general, but I'm picking it up quick.

• Fiddler - A useful free tool for checking Web Services (and web site) traffic

  Recently I had reason to be very glad that I had Fiddler. I was able to record some web service traffic and identify a problem as Fiddler can record both the call to a web service and response from the web service. By seeing the actual data traffic I was able to resolve a problem found in testing in less time than it has taken me to write this blog entry! This tool is also useful for studying general web site traffic. Fiddler is available from http://www.fiddler2.com/fiddler2/ There are training videos available on the above site.

What's the best way to handle the case where the lookup fails? One principle says you should avoid returning null values from functions. These lead to mistakes and AttributeErrors etc. later on in the file. Another idea is to have fetch_by_id raise a ValueError or similar if no user exists with that id. However there's a general principle that you shouldn't use exceptions for control flow, either, which doesn't help much. What could be done better in this case?

• How important is to avoid name collisions between libraries belonging to different domains?

  I have written a small open source Java library for facilitating conversions between different types of objects (in the style of Google's gson, but quite more general). It seems to me that a nice natural name for my library is JConverter, after browsing in the web to see if another library with the same name already exists, I found a library with the same name for Joomla. My concrete question is: How important is to avoid naming collisions when creating an open source library if an existing library with the chosen name already exists in a complete different domain ? (in my concrete case, these are libraries even implemented for different languages).

• How do I balance program CPU reverse compatibility whist still being able to use cutting edge features?

  As I learn more about C and C++ I'm starting to wonder: How can a compiler use newer features of processors without limiting it just to people with, for example, Intel Core i7's? Think about it: new processors come out every year with lots of new technologies. However you can't just only target them since a significant portion of the market will not upgrade to the latest and greatest processors for a long time. I'm more or less wondering how this is handled in general by C and C++ devs and compilers. Do compilers make code similar to if SSE is supported, do this using it, else do that using the slower way or do developers have to implement their algorithm twice, or what? More or less how do you release software that takes advantage of newer processor technologies while still keeping a low common denominator?

• Windows 7/ 12.04 Dual Boot Mess

  I am certainly new to ubuntu (linux in general)... I added ubuntu 12.04 as a dual boot to a brand new desktop which had win 7 pre-installed. Both work well Then I tried to change the order of the boot menu to make Ubuntu first and Win7 second... I did this from the windows side (it seems that my setup is relying on windows bootloader, which I don't think I need to change) using the built-in startup manager (I think that's what windows calls it- it's in the control panel). I set Ubuntu as first (default if no user input). then... I ACCIDENTALLY ("hmmm...I wonder what this button does?") set the menu timeout to "0" Now, I cannot change the menu timeout (because I cannot get into windows) and without doing so, I cannot select windows as the OS I would like to boot(I cannot get into windows). Any Ideas?

• Best language or tool for automating tedious manual tasks [closed]

  We all have tasks that come up from time to time that we think we'd be better off scripting or automating than doing manually. Obviously some tools or languages are better for this than others - no-one (in their right mind) is doing a one off job of cross referencing a bunch of text lists their PM has just given them in assembler for instance. What one tool or language would you recommend for the sort of general quick and dirty jobs you get asked to do where time (rather than elegance) is of the essence? Background: I'm a former programmer, now development manager PM, looking to learn a new language for fun. If I'm going to learn something for fun I'd like it to be useful and this sort of use case is the most likely to come up.

• How to reverse file ownership and permission settings

  I installed LAMP and WordPress on my system a week ago. Since I couldn't create Child Themes in WordPress and work with PHP folders for my other projects collocated in var/www without using Nautilus I wanted to solve the permissions issue. I hoped to bring a solution carrying out the commands on this page for my WordPress folder: http://wiki.apache.org/httpd/FileSystemPermissions. This allowed me to play with any file in the folder like creating and modifying .css files through WP Admin, etc. But after a restart I discovered that I can't change DNS settings of my network connections in the list anymore because it is asking me the root password and even though I enter the password it doesn't let me do the action giving "insufficient privileges" error. Can you help me correct the mistake I possibily made during the configuration and, maybe, configure again the permission and ownership settings for var/www/somefolder as it is adviced to be configured under general circumstances?   Once upon a time, I heard from someone the only difference between programming languages is the syntax I wanted to deny it - to say that there are other fundamental aspects that truly set a language apart from others than just syntax. But I couldn't... So, can you? Whenever I search Google for something like "differences between programming languages", the results tend to be debates between two specific languages (I'd like something more general) - however, some of the aspects that people seemed to debate the most were: Object-Oriented Method/Operator overloading (I actually see this rather related to syntax) Garbage-Collection (While it seems like a good difference, for some reason it doesn't seem that "fundamental") What important aspects other than syntax can you think of?

• When should code favour optimization over readability and ease-of-use?

  I am in the process of designing a small library, where one of my design goals is that the API should be as close to the domain language as possible. While working on the design, I've noticed that there are some cases in the code where a more intuitive, readable attribute/method call requires some functionally unnecessary encapsulation. Since the final product will not necessarily require high performance, I am unconcerned about making the decision to favour ease-of-use in my current project over the most efficient implementation of the code in question. I know not to assume readability and ease-of-use are paramount in all expected use-cases, such as when performance is required. I would like to know if there are more general reasons that argue for a design preferring more efficient implementations—even if only marginally so?

• Abstract skill/talent system implementation

  I've been making small 2D games for about 3 years now (XNA and more recently LWJGL/Slick2D). My latest idea would involve some form of "talent tree" system in a real time game. I've been wracking my brain but can't think of a structure to hold a talent. Something like "Your melee attack is an instant kill if behind the target" I'd like to come up with an abstract object rather than putting random conditionals into other methods. I've solved some relatively complex problems before but I don't even know where to begin with this one. Any help would be appreciated - Java, pseudocode or general concepts are all great.

  Given an array of positive integers in increasing order. Separate them in two series, an arithmetic sequence and geometric sequence. The given array is such that a solution do exist. The union of numbers of the two sequence must be the given array. Both series can have common elements i.e. series need not to be disjoint. The ratio of the geometric series can be fractional.   I'm developing an italian card game using the mvc pattern. I have the class GameFrame that contains the view. The user's card are buttons (JButton objects). I have 3 controllers: GameController: to control the game in general. Contains the game loop. HumanPlayerController: to control the user input ComputerPlayerController: contains the AI of the computer PlayerController: is an interface with the makeTurn() method. It's implemented by HumanP.C. and ComputerP.C. HumanPlayerController implements ActionListener too. But what is the right way to access to the GameFrame buttons? I need it for understand which card was chosen. GameFrame and HumanPlayerController are in different packages. Should i make the JButtons public?

• Who owns the code, who owns the algorithm, who owns the idea?

  This question got me thinking what products of the programming effort belong to the employer, and what don't. The two extremes are (0) the code - it apparently belongs to the employer and (1) the learned personal and technical skills. But what is in between? Who owns the pseudocode/algorithm? Who owns the general idea of the algorithm? Who owns the know-how that such an algorithm may serve some useful purpose (e.g. on this site questions are values, as well as answers)? Also: Who owns an idea on the web?
