• Communicating with web service on SSL

  Hi, I have a web service which previously was deployed on http. I used to generate stub classes using wsimport using wsimport http://localhost:8080/MiniForumService/MiniForumService?wsdl. Now I deployed it on SSL. But when I try to generate the stub classes from it using wsimport https://localhost:8443/MiniForumService/MiniForumService?wsdl but I'm getting the following error: unable to find valid certification path to requested target I'm using a self-signed certificate on the server. • What happens when several Java servlet apps running on the same port ?

  Something strange happened to my servlets and I think I've figured out why, yet I'm more confused. I used Netbean6.7 to develop a Paypal IPN (Instant Payment Notification) message servlet, it listens on port 8080 by default for Paypal IPN messages. I used some sample Java code from it's web site, but when it ran, only about 1 in 10 messages came through, and they looked correct, but why 1 in 10 ? Not 100% or none ? So I asked some questions here and got some advices, one in particular points me to Google's App Engine, so I downloaded it and ran the demo guestbook while my IPN servlet is still running on Netbeans, the strange thing happened, after I entered "appengine-java-sdk-1.3.2\bin\dev_appserver.cmd appengine-java-sdk-1.3.2\demos\guestbook\war" from the command prompt, I went to the following url on my browser "http://localhost:8080/", I thought I would see the Google demo guestbook page, NO, what I saw was another servlet I developed 2 years ago : "Web Academy", online course registration app. How can that happen ? I never started it, and I haven't touch that project for years. I guess because it's also listening on port 8080, so now I understand why the IPN messages only came through 1 in 10 times, because another servlet was also listening on that port and could have got the messages intended for IPN, or some how those two servlets' processes mixed up and therefore couldn't respond to Paypal properly, and failed. In order to verify some of my guesses, I turn off Netbeans, and ran the Google guestbook again at the prompt, this time on my browser http://localhost:8080/ points to the demo guestbook page. My Urls look like this : [A] Paypal IPN : http://localhost:8080/PayPal_App/PayPal_Servlet [B] Web Academy : http://localhost:8080/ So now, my questions are : <1> Why the "Web Academy" servlet was auto started when I ran the Paypal servlet ? <2> If I change the IPN listening port to 8083, would that mean I can run both of them on my PC at the same time without affecting each other ? <3> But I still don't understand, [A] and [B] look different, if a page for [A] is refreshed, it should show the Paypal content, and another page looking at [B] should show the Web Academy content, and that's exactly what happens when I started Netbeans to run the Paypal servlet, both pages show their respective content correctly side by side without interfering with each other, how come the IPN messages couldn't get through 100% of the time ? <4> In Netbeans how to assign 8080 to servlet [A] and assign port 8083 to servlet [B] ? <5> How to turn off auto start of Web Academy by Netbeans ?

• What is an example of a website/service which _isn't_ REST?

  So I just started digging into web tech, and I'm stuck on the concept of REST. Could someone clarify REST by giving me an example of what isn't rest? So, as far as I can tell, REST requires the server and client to both be in the same state at the end of every request-response HTTP transfer. Does that sound right? My understanding is that, if a client stores state information locally (which the server does not know about), that service is NOT rest. Thanks in advance.

  I have converted my old VS2008 Website to Web Application, now everything was working before I tried to convert it. But now I don't seem to be able to reference my Classes? For example I have a BasePage class that every .aspx page inherits like so public partial class SomePageName : BasePage { } But now I get this message? And the same for all the other classes? The type or namespace name 'BasePage' could not be found (are you missing a using directive or an assembly reference?) How do I find out which 'using' directive I am missing and whats an assembly reference?

  I'm planning to develop a city info site. The web pages will display contents from a constantly updating MySQL database- most probably using a CMS. I am planning to share the same database for a Mobile app related to this. In the pages there are options for using geolocation, rate and comment for the user. I think, this mobile app should work while it's offline too. So how should i deal with data for mobile? Should i use a connection between MySQL and IndexedDB? (I'm not quite sure about this part).   I tried the validation example code for web api on the latest mvc 4 download and I'm getting some errors. Does anyone have an updated example of the ValidationActionFilter class. • Game development: “Play Now” via website vs. download & install

  Heyo, I've spent some time looking over the various threads here on gamedev and also on the regular stackoverflow and while I saw a lot of posts and threads regarding various engines that could be used in game development, I haven't seen very much discussion regarding the various platforms that they can be used on. In particular, I'm talking about browser games vs. desktop games. I want to develop a simple 3D networked multiplayer game - roughly on the graphics level of Paper Mario and gameplay with roughly the same level of interaction as a hack & slash action/adventure game - and I'm having a hard time deciding what platform I want to target with it. I have some experience with using C++/Ogre3D and Python/Panda3D (and also some synchronized/networked programming), but I'm wondering if it's worth it to spend the extra time to learn another language and another engine/toolkit just so that the game can be played in a browser window (I'm looking at jMonkeyEngine right now). For simple & short games the newgrounds approach (go to the site, click "play now", instant gratification) seems to work well. What about for more complex games? Is there a point where the complexity of a game is enough for people to say "ok, I'm going to download and play that"? Is it worth it to go with engines that are less-mature, have less documentation, have fewer features, and smaller communities* just so that a (possibly?) larger audience can be reached? Does it make sense to even go with a web-environment for the kind of game that I want to make? Does anyone have any experiences with decisions like this? Thanks! (* With the exception of flash-based engines it seems like most of the other approaches have these downsides when compared to what is available for desktop-based environments. I'd go with flash, but I'm worried that flash's 3D capabilities aren't mature enough right now to do what I want easily. There's also Unity3D, but I'm not sure how I feel about that at all. It seems highly polished, but requires a plugin to be downloaded for the game to be played -- at that rate I might as well have players download my game.)

• Has glassfish 2.1.1 a bug handling http request and handle them twice?

  I'm using glassfish 2.1.1. I've watched a mysterious http/webservice-call handling. It seams an http request is handled by two different threads. After http basic authentication the first thread is faster. Persisting some data end, but writing response fails in glassfish internal. The second thread fails, because it tries to persist identical data and there are (unique) constrain failures. The response (the failure) of second thread was delivered to client. I don't won't discuss the behavior with the unique constrain failure. I've improve the webservice, so it can handle this better, because it could be happen anytime, that the client send the ws call a second time. But I think, glassfish 2.1.1 has an bug handling http request. Is there any known issue? Have I done an mistake?   Why did the team at LMAX design the LMAX Disruptor in Java but all their design points to minimizing GC use? If one does not want to have GC run then why use a garbage collected language? Their optimizations, the level of hardware knowledge and the thought they put are just awesome but why Java? I'm not against Java or anything, but why a GC language? Why not use something like D or any other language without GC but allows efficient code? Is it that the team is most familiar with Java or does Java possess some unique advantage that I am not seeing? Say they develop it using D with manual memory management, what would be the difference? They would have to think low level (which they already are), but they can squeeze the best performance out of the system as it's native.

• How do I get the Java plugin in Firefox 3.6 working?

  I have Ubuntu 10.10. I needed the Sun Java so I added Sun Oracle as supplier of packages and installed java-6. However, I haven't been able to persuade Firefox to use this Java for the browser. In fact I managed to turn off the original Java plugin (I can't remember exactly how) and I can't see any way to re-enable it. Ie. it doesn't appear in the "plugins" page of the Add-ons option. • How to get familiar with "what happens underneath of Java"?

  I did not study CS nor IT. I just became a developer, now working with Java. Actually, since I now work with a big company writing high-scalable web applications, I think I need to be better with details. I have no understanding of what happens underneath of Java. Java Performance, Server-Side Java might be the buzz words?!! I am very poor with those more of low-level details but I do not know where to look honestly.
