• Is it bad practise to call a controller action from a view that was rendered by another controller?

  Let's say I have an OrderController which handles orders. The user adds products to it through the view, and then the final price gets calculated through an AJAX call to a controller action. The price calculation logic is implemented in a seperate class and used in a controller action. What happens is that I have many views from different controllers that need to use that particular action. I'd like to have some kind of a PriceController that I could call an action on. But then the view would have to know about that PriceController and call an action on it. Is it bad practice for a view to call an action on a different controller from which it was rendered?

• Nice function for "rolling score up"?

  I'm adding to the player's score, and I'm using a per-frame formula like: int score, displayedScore ;// score is ACTUAL score player has, // displayedScore is what is shown this frame to the player // (the creeping/"rolling" number) float disparity = score - displayedScore ; int d = disparity * .1f ; // add 1/10 of the difference, if( !d ) d = signum( disparity ) ; // last 10 go by 1's score += d ; Where inline int signum( float val ){ if( val > 0 ) return 1 ; else if( val < 0 ) return -1 ; else return 0 ; } So, it kind of works where it makes big changes rapidly, then it creeps in the last few one at a time. But I'm looking for better (or possibly well known?) score-creeping functions. Any one?

• Is there a name for this use of the State design pattern?

  I'm looking to see if there is a particular name for this style of programming a certain kind of behavior into a program. Said program runs in real time, in an update loop, and the program uses the State design pattern to do some work, but it's the specific way it does the work that I want to know about. Here's how it's used. - Object Foo constructed, with concrete StateA object in it - First loop runs --- Foo.Run function calls StateA.Bar --- in StateA.Bar replace Foo's state to StateB - Second loop runs --- Foo.Run calls StateB.Bar - Third loop runs --- Foo.Run calls StateB.Bar - Fourth loop --- etc. So in short, Foo doesn't have an explicit Initialize function. It will just have Run, but Run will do something unique in the first frame to initialize something for Foo and then replace it with a different action that will repeat in all the frames following it- thus not needing to check if Foo's already initialized. It's just a "press start and go" action. What would you call implementing this type of behavior?

• Browser window size statistics?

  I was wondering, are there any statistics available on what size users have their browser set to nowadays? I know the screen resolutions (we have analytics, which shows those as well) but I doubt a lot of people with 1280*xxx and higher still browse full-screen though. My boss is determined to keep our website 900px wide though, because that way people with 1800*xxx resolutions can have two browser windows next to eachother without having to scroll horizontally. I have never seen anyone browse with two adjacent browser windows like that except here at my current job, so I'm kind of doubting whether this is the best decision or just his personal preference. Anyone that can help out here?

• How often do you use google, to answer programming relatated questions? [closed]

  I hope this isn't too subjective, but it is programming related and Im curious. Alot of times I feel.......dumb for lack of a better word when I have to look something up. Alot of times I forget all the specificity of a language and have to look up something like "Doing XXX in C++" for instance, or something along the lines of that. How often do you guys as Programmers both Professionally and On your own have to use google to look up something. Or do most people just kind of remember these things. I guess what Im really asking is, do you often have to use google or other web-search sites to remember how to do what is seemingly "simple" things with languages but you've just forgotten? Please tell me im not the ONLY one.

• Window controls missing; Cannot maximise or minimize applications

  Ubuntu 12.10 32 bits, fresh installation. How can I make Unity maximize or minimize a window? I see no button,option, anything, do I miss something big? Quick googling did not give me a piece of answer, too: On first screen, I have a terminal window. Only clue about maximizing it I found was pressing F11 which made it fullscreen, hiding left bar as well. I would prefer it to take whole free space instead of whole screen. How can I do that? On second screen, I have an opera browser which takes bigger part of the screen but I can't make it take whole screen. Restarting opera did not work. How do I minimize/maximize apps? Also, in case I would like to see the desktop, only solution I found was closing everything Help guys. I kind of like new GUI, but I can't have simplest tasks done there, I feel like I miss something big there.

• Where is the best place to find stock website templates?

  I think I'm in the majority of programmers in saying I can't do visual design for s***. But I do write programs occasionally, and I'd like to have a nice website to tell people about said programs. I used to use a site called "OSWD" to find templates, but it's been forever since it's been looked at, and most of the designs seem overly specifically tailored to a single kind of site -- for example, a site featuring a large picture of an ice cube wouldn't make much sense for a site displaying software for people to use. I know there are plenty of template sites out there which have freely available designs, but I'm not sure which ones are good, and which ones are garbage. Where is the best place to find website templates?

• Resources for creating a turn-by-turn navigation system

  I'm trying to create a kind of turn-by-turn satellite navigation system using the iOS SDK. I get the directions from the server and draw them on the map, then I keep getting location updates from the iPhone's GPS chip. Currently I start by finding the nearest turning point then, each time the user comes within a certain distance of the next turning point, a verbal cue is given and the turning point index is incremented. This is a delicate system and I'd like to make it more robust so I can tell when the user is going the wrong direction etc. Basically I'm looking for some literature about turn-by-turn navigation, in terms of tracking the user's progress and whether they're going the right direction. I'd have thought there's a lot of research out there but I can't seem to find anything apart from simple tutorials on how to use a given SDK or directions API. Can anyone direct me to a good run-through of the various techniques used in software such as TomTom or Google Maps Navigation?

• Bluetooth device paired and connected (no sound)

  I've got a Bluetooth headset which works great in both Windows 8 and Android 4.2 however on Ubuntu (13.10) it just doesn't seem to work. I installed Blueman, it paired and connected successfully when I tried Audio sink but it still doesn't show up in my Sound Settings nor PulseAudio which I installed and tried. All there is in my Sound Settings is "Analog Output". I tried several fix like changing and adding things in /etc/bluetooth/audio.conf without any success. I've restarted the bluetooth service several times in the process as well. Let me know if you need more information from me and my system. Kind regards, Michael.

• what is the easiest way to make a hitbox that rotates with it's texture

  In xna when you have a sprite that doesnt rotate it's very easy to get the four corner of a sprite to make a hitbox, but when you do a rotation the points get moved and I assume there is some kind of math that I can use to aquire them. I am using the four points to draw a rectangle that visually represents the hitboxes. I have seen some per-pixel collission examples but I can forsee they would be hard to draw a box/'convex hull' around. I have also seen physics like farseer but I'm not sure if there is a quick tutorial to do what I want. What do you guys think is the best approach becuase I am looking to complete this work by the end of the week.

One of them is a wordy, well intended chap who insists on defining the technical solution to our stories before we put down our estimates with Planning Poker. • Attempting to GREP details of a Java error

  I'm running Ubuntu 11 and I'm having some issues with grep. I have a shell script (see below) which essentially checks if a certain Java program of mine is running, if not it runs it. That part works out great! If my Java application throws any kind of exception however I would like to capture that information and email it to myself. How can I go about checking to see if the call to java -jar /bin/MyApp.jar fails? I tried piping it to grep, but that doesn't seem to work.   I would like some pointers to information which would help me understand how to go about providing the ability to filter a list of entities by their attributes as well as by attributes of related entities. As an example, imagine a web app which provides order management of some kind. Orders and related entities are stored in a relational database. And imagine that the app has an interface which lists the orders. The problem is: how does one allow the list to be filtered by, for example:- order number (an attribute) line item name (an attribute of a n-n related entity) some text in an administrative note related to the order (text found in an attribute of a 1-1 related entity) I'm trying to discover whether there is something like a standard, efficient way to construct the queries and the filtering form; or some possible strategies; or any theory on the topic; or some example code. • What source control to use for my private gaming server?h

  It has sql server components, client launcher, server software. I want to use an online resource where people can make updates, and make it easier to roll out any changes to players. Most of the files are just text files, or gtx image files. I don't think this qualifies as open source, so I don't know what to do. I tried github, and have a free account there, but it was really clunky, mass adding every file to be comitted. I really dont' like subversion but if that's the best option, i'll use it. The other people who will need access to the files will have no familiarity with any kind of source control, so I need an easy system for them to download files, make changes, and comit to the repository. Any suggestions?

• How to have similar sound quality in Banshee and Rhythmbox (or Totem) ?

  Hello, I am running Ubuntu 10.10 on an Acer Aspire 6390G. With its 5.1 embedded sound system, this laptop is good at playing music using in-built speakers. The soundcard is an HDA-Intel ALC888. When I use Rhythmbox (version 0.13.1) (or Totem) (and the in-built speakers), the sound is deep, warm, great. But with Banshee (version 1.8.0.), it is always crispy and basically of poor quality when the Banshee equalizer is disabled. I know that it is possible to fine tune Banshee sound using the equalizer, but after some time spent trying to properly adjust it without success, I decided to ask this question on askubuntu.com. Is there a way to get the same sound quality in Banshee as in Rhythmbox (or Totem) or keeping on adjusting Banshee equalizer is the only alternative to try to solve this problem ? (If the answer is the latter, is there anyone who would be kind enough to provide me his equalizer settings ?) Thanks all for your answers.

  i'm having issues with the Software Center. I'm trying to install Google Chrome, but can't because the software center crashes as soon as it opens. I've looked around at similar topics and found plenty but none of the suggested solutions have worked, so I wonder if this is different. When I type 'software-center' into the terminal, I get the error that other's have had: softwarecenter.backend.reviews - WARNING - Could not get usefulness from server, no username in config file I know this might seem like a duplicate, but none of the solution worked. • How can I become a technical trainer from a software developer?

  I am a software developer; in fact a mobile application developer with 4 years of experience. I am passionate about training. I have never been an official trainer but, I have trained freshers on mobile technologies. Now how do I become a professional technical trainer. I have following questions: Do I need some kind of professional certification or degree? Is it too early for me to start as a trainer? I mean experience wise. I will not ask if it's worth it because I am very keen on pursuing training as a profession. However, if I have to be up to date with technology, I don't think I can give up coding and pursue training full time. Any pointers or guidelines would be helpful.

• Install/running ubuntu on extarnal HDD with a windows laptop?

  Sorry for asking, especially as I've trawled through many similar questions. Mine is of the most basic element I think as this kind of thing is really out of my ball park. Anyway I wanted to if by installing ubuntu on my old laptop hdd (I now use it as external storage), can I run it on my laptop which has windows installed. I can't take the chance of installing on the laptop as I'm currently studying, and I have a years worth of work on here (most backed up elsewhere), and will be using it a lot. However there are some programmes I can use if I can get ubuntu that will be helpful for one or two classes. Sorry for the very basic question.

By practical I mean: Does not take a ridiculous amount of time compared to it's almost-perfect counterpart. Can be made to look good on older browsers and to be usable on very old browsers.   Our interview process currently consists of several coding questions, technical questions and experiences at their current and previous jobs. Coding questions are typically a single method that does something (Think of it as fizzbuzz or reverse a string kind of question) We are planning on introducing an additional step where we give them a business problem and ask them to draw a flowchart, activity, class or a sequence diagram. We feel that our current interview process does not let us evaluate the candidate's thinking at a higher level (which is relevant for architect/senior level positions). To give you some context, we are a mid size software company with around 30 developers in the team. If you have this step in your interview process, how has it improved your interviewing veracity? If not, what else has helped you evaluate the candidates better from a technical perspective.

• viewing fbx files in windows via xna 4.0

  I've made some models in Blender and exported them in Autodesk fbx format. I'm trying to view them using XNA 4.0 Refresh. Loading them isn't much an issue, but I'm not familiar enough with XNA 4.0 to, well basically I want to load in the model at say the origin (0,0,0) world coordinates, and then rotate and/or zoom the camera about the world coordinates origin as well so that I can test the model. Typically the mouse, and maybe some arrow keys for zooming/rotating the camera. Anyways, this seems like a simple task and I shouldn't have to re-invent this, isn't there a skeleton code somewhere for this kind of thing for XNA 4.0? I couldn't find a solid example for this on the web. I found a couple that seemed like they might work for xbox, but I'm trying to do this on windows only. Anyways, just looking to be pointed in the right direction on this one, thanks.

• Can I (reasonably) refuse to sign an NDA for pro bono work? [closed]

  A friend of mine (let's call him Joe) is working on a promising project, and has asked me for help. As a matter of friendship I agreed (orally) not to discuss the details, but now he has a potential investor who wants me to sign a non-disclosure agreement (NDA). Since thus far all my work has been pro bono I told Joe I am not comfortable putting myself under documented legal obligation without some kind of compensation for the risk. (It needn't be strictly financial. I would accept a small ownership stake or possibly even just guaranteed credits in the code and documentation.) Is my request reasonable, or am I just introducing unnecessary complexity?
