• How can I generate Sudoku puzzles?

  I'm trying to make a Sudoku puzzle generator. It's a lot harder than I expected and the more I get into it, the harder it gets! My current approach is to split the problem into 2 steps: Generate a complete (solved) Sudoku puzzle. Remove numbers until it's solveable and has only 1 solution. In step 1, since I'm using a brute force methods, I'm facing some run time issues. Is there an optimal way of filling in a complete Sudoku puzzle? In step 2, what kind of algorithm should I use to "puzzlize" a solved sudoku?

  I have a local business directory site. I would like to markup my business listing 'profile' level pages for display as enhanced listings/rich-snippets complete with business names, addresses and phone numbers. I would also like to display site-links and path-based breadcrumbs to help users navigate site directory hierarchy (which is deep). Is there a limit to the amount of breadcrumbs a site can leave? Is there a separate limit on the number of breadcrumbs which Google/Bing will display in the SERP? What kind of markup language(s) would be needed to best position my site to show site-links AND breadcrumbs?   Using Ubuntu 12.04 . I know two methods to access the web-pages through terminal . They are lynx & elinkswhen i have tried to use them to access web-pages from terminal i didn't felt any kind of speed improvements . • Lock screen elements frozen on desktop

  I have finally made the switch from Windows to Ubuntu and now have to ask the first question because search did not help me this time. (Please help me in a newb-friendly way) The problem is easily described: The elements shown in the lockscreen on boot (ubuntu logo in the middle and watermark in bottom left corner) stay there even when I'm entering desktop. How can I remove them again? They haven't been there in the first place, but after updating Ubuntu with Update Center, the problem occured. • How much time do you spend actually developing vs. infrastructure activites?

  When I'm working I feel like most of the time I'm not doing actual work. For example after making a change to the code in order to test it, I have to first build the project, and start the server(say JBoss). Upon testing, I find that there is another small issue. So I bring down the server, make the changes, build again and start up the server again.The building and bringing the server up/down is not very useful work. Also, the IDE (lets say Eclipse) does things such as updating Maven indexes and building the workspace which take some more time to get things done. Have you come across this kind of situation? Do you have tips on how to overcome/bypass this? Any features on the IDE/build tools that can be helpful? Any architecture/application design/technology that attempts to overcome this?

• Keyboard activation bug

  I'm using Ubuntu's last version and there's still a little problem on my installation (already on previous versions). When I start the computer and reach the login screen, I have to wait about a minute to be able to begin to use my keyboard. That's not a real problem but that's kind of annoying. I've tried some things such as a lsusb via ssh and it worked and activated the keyboard without waiting. So I've tried to put it in the crontab (with @reboot) but it doesn't really work. Has someone got an idea how to solve this bug ? Thank you in advance.

• Is there a way to sync my laptop's Ubuntu install with a jumpdrive Ubuntu install?

  So I'm doing a fresh install of Ubuntu on my laptop right now. I also have a jumpdrive with Ubuntu installed on it with a persistent setup. What I would like is to be able to plug the jumpdrive into my laptop and have the installs sync certain data. I don't want docs and such to sync of course, but I would like some software to sync with installs and updates, mostly security and recovery stuff. Here's an example of what I would like to happen: I already have TestDisk installed on my jumpdrive but I haven't booted the drive in a while. I plug it in to my laptop where TestDisk has been updated and Wireshark has been installed. I would like the jumpdrive to check to see what has changed on the laptop install (in this case TestDisk has updated and Wireshark has been installed) and make those changes to the jumpdrive. Is there any kind of software to do that?

  What is the best way to do for example food growth based on how many food buildings you have? Lets say I have a webbased game where you can build a farm wich generates 60 food units per hour. A player has 1 farm in his possession. What is the best way to keep on producing these units even when the player is offline? Should I do the math when the player get's back online again? If so..how can I do this without having to save his last online time every 5 seconds so I can do some maths with it when he logs back in (datetime.now - lastonlinetime)? Next thing is when the player is online, should I refresh his resource count every 5 seconds or so by going to the database and back? This would seem weird to do for every logged on player.   I have some minor messaging connection to server from website via json requests. I have single endpoint which distributes requests according to identification data. I am using asynchronous server and handle data when it comes. Now I am thinking about extending requests with some kind of session. What is the best way to define session? Get cookie when registered and use token as long as session runs with each request? Should I implement timeout for token? Is there alternative methods? Can I cache tokens to same origin requests? What could I use on client side (Web browser)? How about safety? What techniques I should use to throw away requests with malformed data, to big data, without choking server down? Should I worry?

• 12.04 Software "RAID 0" on desktop replacement, 2 HDD?

  Hardware: HP Pavilion DV7 notebook: 8GB DDR3, 2x 750GB SATA2 HDD, I7 c+ Radeon GPU, eSATA, Bluray, etc. Currently multiboot with Win7-64 + choice of 5 'buntu-64. Prefer Xubuntu-64-alternate, but not able to install software RAID-0 at the last active partition on both HDDs. Tried many types: real boot partition, etc. All my Linux op sys boot successfully from the extended partitions on both drives, but without RAID of any kind. Theory - yes. But has anyone really succeeded with 12.04 software RAID-0?

• Chrome window freezes in Ubuntu

  Sometimes, especially when I open pages that have some kind of multimedia contents, Chrome freezes. It always happens directly after opening a new tab. In contrast to the way Chrome usually has only tabs crashing, the entire windows freezes. If I have multiple separate Chrome windows open, the others keep working. I run Ubuntu 12.04 and Chrome in version 20.0.1132.47 but this has been going on since I last set up my machine around half a year ago. Anyone having the same problems or an idea what could be wrong here?

  I have an entity class which is updated every game tick. Let's just assume said entity moves forward constantly. What i want to know is, how can i make it so that i can give an angle to a function and it will make my entity move in that direction. let's say for example moveForward(90); Would make my character move to the right, or for example declaring my rotation as a global Integer: moveForward(rotation); rotation++; Would make my entity move around in a small circle, I assume this includes some kind of vector math, which I haven't done any studying on so a brief explanation of that if it's necessary would be nice. I would appreciate a small code snippet and an explanation I can analyze, thanks in advanced :)

• What sort of things can cause a whole system to appear to hang for 100s-1000s of milliseconds?

  I am working on a Windows game and while rendering, some computers will experience intermittent pauses ("hitches" for lack of a better term). When profiled they appear in seemingly random places in the code. Eventually I noticed that it wasn't just my process that was affected, but (seemingly) every process on the system. All of the threads in my application hitch at once. The CPU utilization drops during these hitches and it appears as if most processes make no progress. This leads me to believe this may be an Operating System or Driver issue, but it only occurs while playing the game (and only on some systems). What sort of operations might the operating system be doing that would require the kernel to pause all user threads and block. Some kind of I/O? At first I thought of paging but my impression is that would only affect a single process, no? Some systems in use: Windows, DirectX (3d), nVidia cards (unknown if replicates on ATI), using overlapped io for streaming

• Theme is broken in some places

  I am using a computer that started out on 11.10. I have since updated it several times, and installed and used a great number of WMs (Unity, XFCE, Gnome, KDE, Cinnamon). I am not sure how, but somewhere along the way (probably when I upgraded to Ubuntu 13.04), some parts of my desktop theme were broken. I have tried switching themes and installing new themes, but that does not work. Neither did a removal of (and log out/login cycle) the ~/.config/dconf folder work. Specifically: on several menus, the central part of a button icon is a "grey square" that doesn't fit in with the theme (picture below). the window and desktop right click menus looks ugly. The same kind of grey field covers the items, and the square checkbox looks weird (just filled with a uniform blue). The separator is a thick line that looks out of place. It seems to be a similar problem to that of window buttons (picture below).

• Can a domain specific language be used to representing the Open SRD

  I am in the early stages of creating an open source C# library that would allow developers to drop in the open SRD (http://www.d20srd.org/) into an existing project. Abstracted it is a complex set of tightly coupled business rules. Having previously worked on an adaptive object model project for health care risk management I began with that pattern in mind. Due to the high coupling of rules it is becoming apparent that the project may require some kind of scripting. Have started researching DSL implementation I am now considering scraping the adaptive object model for a domain specific language. I have not work with domain specific languages so my question is it reasonable to assume a domain specific language can be used to representing the open SRD?

  I’ve had loads of fantastic feedback on the concept and early curation wireframes I posted on the labs, and it’s led to some further thoughts on the topic of voting. More specifically, thoughts about the kinds of behaviour and values a platform encourages in it’s users via the set of available actions. StackOverflow is a very good example of this kind of sociology in action, not only via the set of available actions, but through the reputation system it uses to both reward and control it’s users. In our case (specifically, in the case of the curation model I’ve been talking about thus far), the main considerations are how the quality of content is judged, and how to make sure each piece of curated content gets a fair hearing. Based on the feedback and conversations I’ve had with many of you over the last few days, a few considerations came to light about how we might need to weight and display our curations, and I’ve written about that more extensively over on the labs themselves – have a read and let me know what you think.

• Moving from an IT department to a proper technology company

  I have been working with Java/web applications in an IT department of a retail company. As much as work goes, there is nothing much to say. Fixing couple of if/else loops, writing some simple business logic etc., is all what I have been doing. Having said that, I feel I have a good technical knowledge, and I am willing to move to companies like Microsoft/Google/Amazon etc., [I want to work in these places, because I feel I am a technical guy, and I am working in a place where most people freak out when the words like 'algorithm' are heard] I can of course prepare algorithms/computer science fundamentals etc.,(I hold a 4 year degree in computer science program) but beyond that, will my experience hold against me ? I doubt I'll even get a call from them seeing my work experience. What kind of questions(apart from the algorithm types) can I expect ?

• Scripted Motion Paths (?) (XNA)

  Ok, so the title isn't the greatest because this is a lot more general. Say I want to have the player be able to hit A and have their ship model roll to the right, and shift to the right of the screen, while the camera stays centered. Would I do that through programming (ie. set waypoints for the model and keep the camera focus still) or do it through animation ( so the ship model actually rolls and moves right, and just play those frames)(I actually don't know how to do this kind of 3D animation yet, haven't looked into it. • Two users sharing the same computer

  I need to share my pc with a friend of mine living in India. His pc is a p4 and he needs a bit of horsepower for calculation. Since I have an i5 I thought to let him vnc and use it but this would not allow me to use the computer at the same time. Is there a way to use the computer at the same time with different users? I've read Xorg is able to do this but I am not sure is the best solution nor I can implement it. We have Ubuntu 12.04 64bit on the i5 side and Ubuntu 12.04 32bit on the p4 side. • Help with a CMS for content only not display

  Hello I'm trying to make some kind of tool for an school website, what I need to do is to make students take a test and according to what are the results (27 posibilities) they get a set of activities (questions) according to their level which they can solve in around 3 months logging periodically to the website, plus I need teachers to log and look at the reports. Now, I'm a graphic designer myself so my skills are mostly html5 and css3 and I know some php (edit existing ones only) and javascript (jquery) as well, most people tell me that I need a CMS to do the tool but all I find is CMS for display like blogs or news websites which I think aren't useful for me because the website is already made in html and css3 only (I need to add an extra page for the tool) I understand I need to create users and give them special rights according to what type of user they are and I also understand that I need a database where I can store all my questions. What is the best way to do this? what do you suggest me? Thanks

• Where, in an object oriented system should you, if at all, choose (C-style) structs over classes?

  C and most likely many other languages provide a struct keyword for creating structures (or something in a similar fashion). These are (at least in C), from a simplified point of view like classes, but without polymorphism, inheritance, methods, and so on. Think of an object-oriented (or multi paradigm) language with C-style structs. Where would you choose them over classes? Now, I don't believe they are to be used with OOP as classes seem to replace their purposes, but I wonder if there are situations where they could be preferred over classes in otherwise object-oriented programs and in what kind of situations. Are there such situations?
