• VMWare guest OS internet access issues

  My host is running Win 7 ultimate 64bit, ESET NOD32 AV 4.0 (64 bit). My guest OS is Windows XP Professional (Sp3) Using bridge mode, I can ping gateway just fine, even ping public dns server (8.8.8.8 or 208.67.222.222). But cannot resolve any dns request. I tried using nslookup with public dns, my gateway but no good. I can access my host share file normally thou. Any suggestions?

  Hello, I'm curious what the best tools are to use for analyzing problems with a WiFi network. Here's the scenario: I have a WiFi router (Belkin N+) that's setup in AP mode. I have three RT-N13U's that I've purchased to use as 'repeaters', but I've had so many problems when more than one of them is running (bad routes) that I've only got one active. Sometimes certain boxes on my network can't talk to others, and drops are quite frequent and quite aggravating. I'm running Mac, Windows, and Linux (Gentoo) boxes on this network, so any software, or steps I should take that work for any of those boxes should be sufficient. Apologies if this is answered somewhere else - I'll close it as a dupe if so.

  Hello, this should be a relatively simple question. I'm attempting to get my windows wireless card to work with ubuntu, booted from my portable hard drive. My computer is an HP Pavilion Entertainment dv5 notebook, which came with Vista 64. I would like confirmation about which of the drivers I should use. At this point, I'm leaning towards Broadcom BCM4318 HP Pavilion zv6000, but I thought it best to ask advice before taking action. • Linux Logitech QuickCam Pro 9000 - microphone issues

  I got a Logitech Quickcam Pro 9000, the cam itself is working as it honors the UVC spec. This fancy WebCam has a integrated mic which worked some time before but now, it does no more. (Note: I use pulseaudio as it is a USB Mic and I am not really keen on the hassle of ALSA setup) Things I check already are if it gets detected at all: $ lsusb |grep Logi Bus 002 Device 002: ID 046d:0809 Logitech, Inc. Webcam Pro 9000 is muted in alsa-mixer - not the case, volume at 100 pavucontrol shows it too, but no input level bar! On top of that, if I open the gnome3 (fallback mode) audio panel(from the desktop panel), and disabel/reenable it in the hardware tab, it works "for some time"... Any hints? Any ideas? I am really out options for now, and the fact it worked like 6 months ago (perfectly) makes it no better.

• SNMP counter issues with cisco RV082

  Does anyone else poll this router with SNMP? We are using firmware version: 2.0.0.19-tz We are having problems with the traffic counters, some of them appear to be implemented as 16 bit counter instead of 32 bit counters. The reason this is causing problems is that they roll over (at 65,000) to 0 in less than our minute polling cycle, really skewing our metrics. The counter for the Lan (interface 2) seems to be functioning properly, however interfaces 3 and 4 (WAN and DMZ / WAN2) rollover at 65000. • Domains propagation issues.

  Hello to all. I got very strange issue, really weird. On weekend, May 9th I changed my server location from US to UK. Of course, everything works correctly excluding domains. There's something wrong. I got few domains on this server but I still cannot access them. When I try from the other location it works correctly. The most funny situation is that everything is working correctly from my girlfriend's work, about 500 meters from our house, but they have another ISP. It also works when I access the domains via proxy server. I checked who.is informations and everything seems to be working. On Sunday and today morning I was able to access my domains but only for a while. When I refreshed website second time I got error "Firefox was not able to connect server". Since then I'm still getting this error. Could it be my ISP fault? Regards, Andrew

• DB2 LUW tools for diagnosing issues when the stuff hits the fan

  I am no DBA and very much a novice when it comes to DB2 so even 'obvious' answers are welcome to this question: I love db2top but sometimes I cannot get it to run if the load average is high on a db2 LUW. This morning I was looking at an issue where load average shot up suddenly, I could not get db2top to come up and I needed to find out what was happening. What can I do to find out who is doing what in this situation? I suspected a horribly bad query was being run by someone...is there a good way to find information on poor performing SQL on the fly in that type of situation? Are there any good ways to collect good, actionable stats who/where bad sql is coming from in the event that load average is so high? I know about db2pd but I am not sure how to use it effectively and slogging through tens of thousands of lines of raw data is probably not the most efficient way to get at the heart of a problem. Any tips or resources?

• Issues with creating a snapshot

  Hello everyone, We have a strange issue when attempting to create a snapshot in one of our regional environments. We have 4 VMs, 2 of them have mulitple VMDKs spread onto different datastores. When a snapshot is created, all the VMDKs (except for the first), seem to vanish. If you look at the properties of the VM, the path to the VMDKS points to the datastore where the primary VMDK is, and the file name is some random garbage. If the snapshot is deleted everything returns to normal. Has anyone ever seen this? I'm using ESX3.5 Thank you in advance. Andy ==============UPDATE============== Here is some more information. I just created a test machine with 7 VMDKs. 1 for the OS. and 6 others for data. All of the VMDKs are in seperate datastores. I take a snapshot of the machine, all of the 6 VMDKs loose their reference to the actual VMDK files. The all point to 64KB VMDK files in the datastore where the OS VMDK is located. These 64KB vmdks didn't exist until the snapshot was taken. When the snapshot is deleted, everything goes back to normal.

  I'm not sure whether this is a Windows problem or a .NET problem (i.e. whether it belongs here on on SO), but I've written a small HTTP server program in C# (using the .NET HttpListner class) which works fine for the most part, but Windows Firewall seems to be refusing to let connections through to it from anything other than localhost. I've added exceptions for TCP and UDP in the "Inbound Rules" section of the firewall settings, essentially duplicating existing rules for other HTTP-based services which work fine (e.g. foo_httpcontrol). Specifically, I've added separate rules for TCP and UDP connections covering all ports, specific to the executable I'm running. There's no problem when Windows Firewall is disabled, but if I enable it, the connection simply times out.

• Deployment and Ownership issues

  As an extreme newbie, I am having difficulty managing ownership and permissions on my first box. What I can't figure out is how to deploy using one user, we will call him deploy and operate my php application with www-data user. Currently as it stands, I know my server runs as www-data through this function <?php echo(exec("whoami")); ?> but I am having to chown between deploy and www-data every time I deploy. There has got to be an easier way to deploy with one user and still run as www-data. EDIT: Here is the output from ls- l on the folder in question. You will see user deploy and group www-pub, the group is from an attempt to add the two different users to a new group and chown one of them in the hopes that they both would have the permissions (newb alert) drwxrwxr-x 4 deploy www-pub 4096 Mar 7 01:41 example.com I am using capistrano for deployment under the user deploy then once its done i chown to www-data, otherwise I can't use php to manipulate files. I am also unsure how to even change which user apache is running.

• Installing ffmpeg + dependencies on AWS Linux AMI (repo issues)

  I'm installing ffmpeg to run on an Amazon linux AMI, and have added the rpmforge repo and the dag repo. Here are some guidelines I'm using for reference: TWoZaO and Razuna The rpmforge repo has ffmpeg, but if you try to install it then it will complain that is missing dependencies (for me libSDL-1.2.so.0()(64bit)). Regardless I will install ffmpeg from svn so I can be sure to enable the options I want (namelylibx264). It seems strange to me though that SDL is not inrpmforgeordag`, and in according to both of my references above, it should be there.   When I enable SLI I keep getting artifacts in random games and in Windows Aero sometimes . It doesn't seem to be about over-heating as it happens randomly, and sometimes whole computers just crashes (not blue-screen, just black gone...) My setup: Geforce 8800 GTS 320MB ( http://www.bfgtech.com/bfgr88512gtoce.aspx ) x 2 GIGABYTE EX58-UD4 Windows 7 RC PSU 800W I've got the latest NVIDIA drivers and F5 BIOS update (*SLI update*). When I disable SLI and use the cards separately they are working just fine even in games. Any idea why this might happen?

• Migrateing to Windows Server 2008 R2 Domain Controllers - a few Questions/Issues

  Ok so here's our setup: We have 2 Windows2k3 Domain Controllers. I am trying to replace them with Windows 2008 R2. The Win2k3 servers are DC01 and DC02. The Windows2k8 servers are DC1 and DC2. I prepared the Windows Server 2003 Forest Schema for a Domain Controller That Runs Windows Server 2008 or Windows Server 2008 R2. Then with both of the new servers up as member servers I dcpromo'd DC1 using the advanced option and added it successfully to my exisiting domain. Roles are GC, DNS and Active Directory Domain Services.I transferred The PDC, RID pool manager and Infrastructure master FSMO to the new DC.(DC1) The Schema master and Domain naming master are still on the old DC (DC01). The first issue I'm encountering is when i dcpromo the second DC (DC2) and select "Replicate data over the network from and existing domain controller" I select the new DC to replicate from (DC1) I get the following error: "Failed to identify the requested replica partner (dc1.xxx.org) as a valid domain controller with a machine account for (DC2$). This is likely due to either the machine account not being replicated to this domain controller because of replication latency or the domain controller not advertising the Active Directory Domain Services. Please consider retrying the operation with \dc01.xxx.org as the replica partner. "The server is unwilling to process the request." Is this because the Schema master and Domain naming master roles are still on the old DC (DC01)? And if so, if I transfer Schema master and Domain naming master roles to DC1 what is the risk or breaking my AD? I'm a little paranoid because this process HAS to be transparent. ANY down time or interruption will result in me getting a verbal ass kicking from my I.T. Director. Both of the new servers DNS point the the old DNS servers (DC01 and DC02) not themselves by the way. Thanks in Advance -Chris

• Mac OS X Snow Leopard: permissions changed on /var results in dns lookup issues

  I was attempting to solve an issue ("/var/log/msmtp.log: permissions denied" error when attempting to send mail using msmtp) when I did this: > chmod -R 770 /var After that, my machine would not resolve domain names via cURL. (ping also fails) But, oddly, I can enter domain names into Safari and visit any web pages w/o a problem... I'm actually not sure if the chmod command is the cause of the problem, but I suspect it is. Also, if I ls -l on /var (or /private/var) it doesn't seem that any of the subdirectories or files there actually changed permission, but there are many, so I can't say that conclusively... Incidentally, I fixed the original error (msmtp.log permission denied) by setting TMPDIR=/tmp in my local environment (bash). Now the error goes away, but I get this error: msmtp: cannot locate host domainname.org: nodename nor servname provided, or not known Any ideas about how to go about getting DNS working again?

• Smoothwall Express interface issues

  I have a SmoothWall Express box that is currently configured with a Green and Purple interface. Both interfaces are in the same /24 subnet (which seems odd to me). The green interface (address of .254) has a DHCP server that is pushing addresses from .1 to .100 and the purple interface (.253) is pushing addresses from .101 to .120. Every machine here is trusted, and as such is connected to the green interface via a wired connection or wireless APs. Nothing is connected at all (port is physically empty, traffic graphs show no activity) to the purple interface. However, every machine here is pulling addresses from the purple interface. So the question boils down to, how do I remove/stop my machines from pulling from the purple dhcp interface? Also, shouldn't the purple interface (if we were using it for guest Wifi or something) be on a different subnet (i.e. 192.168.100.0/24 instead of 192.168.1.0/24 with all the trusted machines)?

• SBS 2008 DNS issues in BPA

  I'm gettng constant Critical Issue events in the Small Business Server Best Practices Analyser & resulting SBS Console reports that begin "The DNS client is not configured to point only to the internal IP address of the server.". When I check the DNS Manager, there are two separate IPs listed, one ***.***.***.2 and the other ***.***.***.28. I have checked online after an ipconfig /all and have found the reason for this to be that the second IP is created by DHCP for RAS & VPN purposes. It seems to cause no conflicts of any detrimental result apart from constantly sending me error messages and alerted reports. Does anyone know of a way that I can change settings somewhere so that Windows accepts this second IP, or at least stops alerting me of its prescence? Perhaps a registry hack of some kind...?   I'm trying to chroot a site using PHP-FPM. I've been following this post and have done mount --bind for all of those files and folders. When I try to send mail using mail(), it returns false. PHP does have access to usr/sbin/sendmail (which is what my sendmail path is set to in the php.ini), along with the other files mentioned in that post, within the chroot. Anybody have any clues as to what files I'm missing or how to debug further?

• Mixed network, Linux-to-Linux hostname resolution issues

  At work we have an WinSBS domain at the heart of our network, which is all Windows PCs. The domain controller is acting as a DNS for these computers. I have recently added some personal use Linux machines to the network, without joining them to the domain. I have set up Samba with "wins server" pointing to the domain controller, which lets the Windows boxes resolve the Linux hostnames just fine. I also have resolvconf set up with the domain controller as a nameserver and the local domain as a searched domain, which lets the Linux boxes resolve the Windows hostnames just fine. However, the Linux boxes will not resolve other Linux hostnames at all. Given that I don't have control over the DNS server (I am not the network admin) and that at least one of the Linux boxes is not an always-on machine and is likely to change its LAN IP frequently (via DHCP), what service am I missing to make their hostnames visible to each other?

It seems to sign okay, but then when I check the signature it seems to be missing the key I just used to sign it.   EDIT: I will contact the university about my problem after labor day weekend, but I thought if someone knew a quick fix that I haven't tried, or if the problem has an obvious fix then I could hope to try my luck here, thanks! TLDR: Sorry its a long post, I thought I should be... thorough. I am having a common issue (found a dead thread through google with no solution to the same problem) with the prompt to enter in a username and password via htaccess rights, but this prompt will keep popping up asking for a username and password when trying to access my home directory on my university's server which has the .htaccess and .htpasswd files. It does not matter if I enter in correct or incorrect credentials, the prompt will keep asking me for input without displaying my home directory. Ever since I have included these ht files I have never once been able to get past the username/password no matter what I have tried, save for removing them from the directory I am trying to access (my top level directory that I own). This kind of served my original goal of making the top level directory inaccessible to casual users, but if I wanted to use this method on other places, I would want it to work as intended. And I also like it when computers do what I wish they would, so any help is appreciated. Some things I have tried: Changing the file/directory access rights: they told me to try these commands if people can't access my files cd ~/public_html find ./ -type d -exec chmod 755 {} \; find ./ -type f -exec chmod 644 {} \; enter in the single character name/pw at least twenty times in a row, no cheddar. so I changed directory with cd ~ in hopes that this would be my home directory, since my home directory contains the "public_html" directory, so logic tells me that the ~ tilde symbol is the top level directory that I have ownership of. Then I did those two commands to change the rights on the files inside, I am still having no luck. How I got to this point: I have been following the instructions given to me through my university's website for setting up my little directory. A link on how they describe how to password protect the home directory is given below: "Protect Web Directories" instructions I have everything in order except for one small detail that I feel probably does not matter. I am on windows and so I am using winSCP to remote control my allocated server space. The small detail is that as the instructions indicate (on step 3) that I should use the command htpasswd -c .htpasswd {username} where {username} is my folder that holds my allocated server space. But this command requires further input through the terminal, and unfortunately winSCP does not offer this kind of functionality. So I looked up some basic instructions on using htaccess and it is formatted correctly such that the .htaccess file appears as follows: AuthType Basic AuthName "Verify" AuthUserFile /correctpath/.htpasswd require valid-user and this file is in the root directory for my server space as well as the .htpasswd file which has only this data inside: username:password I know for sure that these two files must be formatted correctly, at least according to their tutorial, because before my path was incorrectly formatted via including some curly { braces } without knowing the correct way to do this at first. And the password prompt that shows up when accessing my directory responded by loading an error page indicating to contact OSU admin or something not important. But now that I have everything like it 'should' be. I know this because when I enter in my credentials "username and password" the prompt pops up for my username and password again and again whether or not I enter in correct information. The only exception is that if I click cancel it will direct me to a page saying that I need to enter in a username and password. Note that I am very inexperienced at server-related buisness, two days ago I couldn't have told you what a website actually consists of. So, if you use some technical jargon I may or may not need to look it up and get back to you before I actually understand what you mean, but I am a quick learner and it probably wont matter.

• External USB HD issues with a twist (works on Windows7 but not XP)

  I have this older external USB HD, 160 GB. I was using it to copy my Steam games to another computer. On the source computer, Windows 7 64-bit, everything worked fine. Drive reported no errors, had no hiccups, etc. Plugging it into the Windows XP 32-bit computer, it worked fine for looking through the files, moving files around on it (no real reading/writing, just modifying the filesystem table). However, when copying files from it to my internal HD, after a couple seconds to tens of minutes (seemingly random times), the USB device becomes unrecognized and it reports a delayed write error. Events in system log go like this, chronologically: (number times displayed)xSource (Event ID): "message" 2xdisk (51): An error was detected on device \Device\Harddisk1\D during a paging operation. 1xftdisk (57): The system failed to flush data to the transaction log. Corruption may occur. 1xApplication popup (26): Windows - Delayed Write Failed : Windows was unable to save all the data for the file E:\$Mft. The data has been lost. This error may be caused by a failure of your computer hardware or network connection. Please try to save this file elsewhere. 1xntfs (50): {Delayed Write Failed} Windows was unable to save all the data for the file . The data has been lost. This error may be caused by a failure of your computer hardware or network connection. Please try to save this file elsewhere. These repeat for a while, then there is 10+ disk messages or ftdisk messages. Other notes: This occurs on random files at random times. This problem cannot be replicated on the Windows 7 source machine when copying from the HD to a different location on its local disk chkdsk /f was run and found no errors. chkdsk /f/r has the delayed write issue. drive was set to quick removal. Setting to performance in device manager yielded same result I am not writing anything to the USB external drive, so I am not sure why there is even a delayed write error (writing file access times?) local Windows XP was chkdsk'd without problems Windows XP machine has no problems with other USB HD's Various USB ports were attempted Rebooting did not help Occurs with SyncToy as well as windows explorer SMART status is good on both local drive and the external one Lack of gaming is making me cranky

• 3 Servers, 2 Work Fine, One Has Network Issues

  i have 3 servers, all relatively the same hardware/config, etc. I run some data pulls on all 3, and on 2 of them, they have 1 nic, and they work fine. On the other , there are 2 nics, and unless they are both plugged in or teamed, the processes time out. Any ideas on why this would be? It doesn't make sense to me, as the other two work fine with 1 nic and don't time out when running the same processes.

"The connection was reset" (note.- added a space after http: to avoid link protection but this is not really promoting anything) I've been troubleshooting (3) for a couple hours and I'm unable to identify the culprit. I'm running NGINX 1.0.10 (latest stable) on Debian 6.0.2 32 bits. This NGINX instance runs another 40 or 50 sites with no problems.

• Video issues with old server running Boxee

  I have a old Dell Power Edge 1650 1U rackmount server running Windows XP. Dual 1.3 ghz Processors and 1 GB of RAM. I would like to run Boxee on it, but the 8mb integrated video card will not support it. The font within Boxee just comes up as blocks of color. I have a PCI Radion R9000 dual out video card. However when I plug it in I can not get video signal on any of the VGA outs. Is it possible to upgrade the video card on this old of a server, or is it possible to make it work with the older integrated video?
