• iphone crash log with dSym not loading debug information

  Hello, I was trying to see why my application crashed on the device (iPhone) using the dSym generated along the executable (in ad hoc), but I don't know why, there isn't any useful information. It seems that "Organizer" is able to find the appropriate dSym and translate some data into more readable one, but when it comes to my application, I just have an address. Since I know how to reproduce it, I've tried to setup my build so it can help me in the future. So, I've tried to find if I had all the proper flags set int the project build properties and everything seems fine. So after doing some research, it seems that all information are stripped during link time and the dSym seems completely useless. I've played with some flags, but nothing changed. So, is there something special to do in order to get the crash file human readable? Or is it impossible in the ad hoc setting? The closest thing near to work that I've done was to build a debug version and look up the address in it. At least it seems to give the right file. • Uncaught exception while using xdebug

  I'm not too great with xdebug so forgive me if this is a stupid question. But I installed it on a separate machine and it performed some magic for me like formating my var_dump() output and catching any uncaught exceptions. It also fails to format the stack traces, outputting plain text which is extremely hard to read. As I am learning the Lithium PHP Framework I am required to use php5.3, on my other machine I compiled from the source but on this machine I'm using the precompiled packages from dotdeb.org. As far as I can tell the only difference is that this is a slightly newer version of php and it comes with the Suhosin patch. The other odd thing is that the xdebug functions such as xdebug_var_dump() work, aside from poor formatting. This is an Ubuntu machine, so I don't know if it could be anything to do with the dotdep packages, but I have installed xdebug through pecl, the downloadable tarball and from the SVN repository. But to no avail. You can see my php.ini and output of php -i in the following gist.   Is there a way to create a local branch, or modify an existing local branch, in such a way that it cannot be dcommit'ed to the svn repo? • Is there a modern free D?VCS that can ignore mainframe sequence numbers?

  I'm looking at migrating a large suite of IBM Assembler Language programs, from a vcs based on "filenames include version numbers", to a modern vcs which will give me, among other things, the ability to branch and merge. These files have 80-column records, the last 8 columns being an almost-meaningless sequence number. For a number of reasons which I don't really want to waste space by going into, I need the vcs to ignore (but hopefully preserve in some well-defined manner) the sequence number columns, and to diff and patch based only on the contents of the first 72 columns. Any ideas? Just to clarify "ignore but preserve": I accept it's a bit vague, as I haven't fully collected my ideas yet. It would be something along the lines of this: "When merging/patching, if one side has sequence numbers, output them; if more-than-one side has sequence numbers, use those present in file (1|2|3)" Why do I want to preserve sequence numbers? First, they really are sequence numbers. Second, I want to reintegrate this stuff back onto the mainframe, where sequence numbers can be terribly significant. (Those of you who know what "SMP/E" means will understand. Those who don't, be happy, but tremble...) I've just realised I hadn't accepted an answer. Difficult choice, but @Noldorin comes closest to where I have to go.

• Do you feel threatened by younger developers?

  When an opportunity for a new project in my company presented itself, I volunteered with a little bit of skepticism but a lot of excitement. I have been working with this company for 5 years on a different project in which I was a team lead for several releases. I have a consistent track record of delivering good quality projects. The new project has a team that is built from ground up and the management decided to hire new developers. The technologies used are the latest ones that are different from the previous project I had worked on (although they both are in .NET). The newer and the younger developers in the team have more experience with the latest technologies from their previous gigs. The younger developers have a lot more energy, can work 14 hours a day (they remind me of my early 20s) and live on ramen noodles. Since they are new, I feel they are obligated to show what they are made of and to prove their mettle. I feel like I am sidelined in this project and the management obviously like the younger developers as they bring more to the table. I know ageism is rampant in our field and the more I think about this, the more it makes me feel that there are very few transferable skills from one project to the other and one day you could be a team lead managing a number of developers, the next day some one you hired becomes your boss. Do you see yourself in situations like this very often? What plans do you have to make yourself valuable in a long term perspective?

• tipfy for Google App Engine: Is it stable? Can auth/session components of tipfy be used with webapp?

  I am building a web application on Google App Engine that requires users to register with the application and subsequently authenticate with it and maintain sessions. I don't want to force users to have Google accounts. Also, the target audience for the application is the average non-geek, so I'm not very keen on using OpenID or OAuth. I need something simple like: User registers with an e-mail and password, and then can log back in with those credentials. I understand that this approach does not provide the security benefits of Google or OpenID authentication, but I am prepared to trade foolproof security for end-user convenience and hassle-free experience. I explored Django, but decided that consecutive deprecations from appengine-helper to app-engine-patch to django-nonrel may signal that path may be a bit risky in the long-term. I'd like to use a code base that is likely to be maintained consistently. I also explored standalone session/auth packages like gaeutilities and suas. GAEUtilities looked a bit immature (e.g., the code wasn't pythonic in places, in my opinion) and SUAS did not give me a lot of comfort with the cookie-only sessions. I could be wrong with my assessment of these two, so I would appreciate input on those (or others that may serve my objective). Finally, I recently came across tipfy. It appears to be based on Werkzeug and Alex Martelli spoke highly of it here on stackoverflow. I have two primary questions related to tipfy: As a framework, is it as mature as webapp? Is it stable and likely to be maintained for some time? Since my primary interest is the auth/session components, can those components of the tipfy framework be used with webapp, independent of the broader tipfy framework? If yes, I would appreciate a few pointers to how I could go about doing that.

• How do you obtain a formatted date and time for the current locale in C?

  What C function should I call to obtain a formatted date and time for the locale where the program is being executed? I'm asking this question because I have run into a problem using the ClamAV daemon API. The VERSION command returns the date and time of the latest virus definitions, but the code uses a call to ctime to format it. As far as I can tell ctime does not format the datetime according to the current locale and uses the English abbreviations for days of the week and the month in the returned string. This causes problems as my Java program which uses the ClamAV API does respect the current locale and thus expects the day of the week and month name to have the local abbreviations. The datetime format would need to be in the same format as that produced by ctime: Www Mmm dd hh:mm:ss yyyy Where Www is the weekday, Mmm the month in letters, dd the day of the month, hh:mm:ss the time, and yyyy the year. I could rewrite the Java program to always assume English dates but I'd be happier to submit a patch to ClamAV as it seems like a bug on their side to me.

• Memory Leak Looping cfmodule inside cffunction

  Hoping someone else can confirm or tell me what I'm doing wrong. I am able to consistently reproduce an OOM running by calling the file oom.cfm (shown below). Using jconsole I am able to see the request consumes memory and never releases it until complete. The issue appears to be calling <cfmodule> inside of <cffunction>, where if I comment out the <cfmodule> call things are garbage collected while the request is running. • Problems compiling libjingle/gtk+-2.0 for Mac OS X

  Hi All, I'm trying to compile libjingle on Mac OSX Snow Leopard. The INSTALL file said to './configure', 'make' and 'make install', as usual. But make fails for me. Initially it gave some messages indicating that I didn't have pkg-config installed (I guess OSX doesn't come with it installed?), so I downloaded pkg-config from http://pkgconfig.freedesktop.org/releases/ Now I get this message: Package gtk+-2.0 was not found in the pkg-config search path. Perhaps you should add the directory containing `gtk+-2.0.pc' to the PKG_CONFIG_PATH environment variable No package 'gtk+-2.0' found I tried to install gtk by using the script at SourceForge: http://sourceforge.net/projects/gtk-osx/ (this is the website pointed to by the gtk website) Running the script didn't really seem to do anything, here is the output: $./gtk-osx-build-setup.sh Checking out jhbuild (2.27.3) from git... From git://git.gnome.org/jhbuild * tag 2.27.3 -> FETCH_HEAD Installing jhbuild... Installing jhbuild configuration... Installing gtk-osx moduleset files... Done. $ And I still get that error message about "Package gtk+-2.0 not found" while make-ing libjingle. Help will be appreciated, thanks!

• Looking for all-in-one drm/installer/CD creation kit.

  The company I work for has a download manager in place that handles distribution, DRM, installation of our products - when a user gets them off our website. However, we're using an clunky system for packaging and protecting our products when we do press releases or make retail CDs. Part of the antiquation problem is the fact that the automated system that works with the installer- and DRM-creation software we have is a disaster that needs to be put out of my misery. The list of products that we currently produce, that I would like a new system MUST be capable of producing: Retail CDs, with a certain level of obfuscation to make copying difficult. Downloadable installers that time out after a few hours of use of the product. After the time has expired, removing and reinstalling the product will leave you still blocked from use. Installers that will fail to work after a certain date. I'd love to be able to just feed a tool the directory where a complete product resides and have the installer generated with a couple command-line operations. (The command-line issue is non-negotiable this well be called by an automated tool.) A single-solution package would be far preferable. Software with royalty-based or per-unit based licensing is not an option.

• SQL Server 2005 Reporting Services (x64) on Windows 2K8 -> CleanCurrentUserName() not found

  I have installed SQL Server 2005 three times now on the same box. I cleaned up registry settings, files, you name it. All along I have been trying to install SQL Server 2005 Database and Reporting Services (x64) on a Windows 2008 Server. I have also applied the SP3 patch. Installing and Restarting the Server at every point. I have installed multiple instances (SQLDEV64, SQLQA64, SQLSTAGE64) of the Database and Reporting Services. I started to go through the Reporting Services Configuration manager, installing the Reporting Database along with setting up IIS. When I go test the website I get the following and there lies my question. How can I get around this error? http://localhost/reportserver Reporting Services Error -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- An internal error occurred on the report server. See the error log for more details. • Querying datetime.datetime on appengine acts different then dev server help!

  Hey, I'm having some trouble with stuff that work locally and dont work on the app engine python environment: Basically, i want to get a program from an epg between ranges of date and time. i know i cannot do two where < so i saw a suggestion to save the dates as list as datetime.datetime which i did. [datetime.datetime(2010, 5, 10, 14, 25), datetime.datetime(2010, 5, 10, 15, 0)] This is ok. but when i try to compare to it: progranon = get_object(Programs2Channel, 'channel_id =', channelobj.key(), 'endstartdate >', programstart_minex, 'endstartdate <', programstart_minex ) This for some reason works locally, but fails to retrieve the data on the app engine. *Im using Google app engine django patch which uses the get_object to retrieve data in transactions. Please help. • Keyboard blocking my view

  I have a UIView with another UIView inside it. On the inside UIView there is a textbox which I want to fill in. When I try to fill it in the keyboard blocks my view: The UIViewController has the following containerView = [[UIView alloc] initWithFrame:[UIScreen mainScreen].bounds]; self.view=containerView; //The apropriate releases etc are further on... When I touch it, the keyboard comes up as expected, but blocks the textbox I'm trying to fill in. How can I force the view to slide up? • Generating SQL change scripts in SSMS 2008

  I have gone through many related SO threads and got some basic info. Already generated DB diagram. After that i am unable to find a button/option to generate SQL scripts (create) for all the tables in diagram. "Generate script" button is disabled, even on clicking the table in diagram. However i enabled the auto-generate option in tools-designer. But what to do with previous diagrams. I just want an easy way to auto-generate such scripts (create/alter) and would be gud if i get auto-generated stored procs for insert/selects/update etc. EDIT: I could do generate scripts for DB objects. Now: 1. How to import DB diagram from another DB. 2. How to generate (and manage their change integrated with VS source control) routine stored-procs like insert, update and select. Ok let me ask another way, can experts guide on the usual flow of creating/altering tables (across releases), creating stored-procs (are stored-procs the best way to go ?) and their change-management using SSMS design tools and minimal effort ?

• Ubuntu server or Debian server (to run C++ apps developed on Ubuntu)

  I have written a number of C++ server side daemons for my website, using my Ubuntu 9.10 dev machine. I am now about to venture out to look for a hosting provider etc. This is my problem: I have read on many posts (admittedly old posts) that Debian server is much more robust than Ubuntu server - is this till the case?. In particular, I am constantly "raising elephants" with my Ubuntu 9.10 - this is "ok" for home use, but for a website server, I would not be so forgiving. Also, there seems to be a new "patch" every few weeks - which I would not like on a server (I want to leave the server well alone, and let it get on with its business of serving pages). So in this instance Debian looks a more attractive proposition. I am worried that the C++ apps I have developed on Ubuntu may not be binary compatable with Debian (or I may need to install additional libraries/packages etc to get things to work), and I have zero experience with Debian. Additionally, I dont want to be grappling with the learning curve associated with a new OS, whilst trying to launch a new web site (I am assuming Debian UI is quite different from Ubuntu). In this case, the maxim "the devil you know is better than the one you dont", seems appropriate - and I find Ubuntu a more attractive proposition (atleast I know my apps will run without any probs etc). Can anyone provide some rational advice (based on actual experience), to help me decide which route to take - given the two (conflicting) trains of thought outlined above?

• Looking for combinations of server and embedded database engines

  I'm redesigning an application that will be run as both a single user and multiuser application. It is a .NET 2.0 application. I'm looking for server and embedded databases that work well together. I want to deploy the embedded database in the single user setup and of course, the server in the multiuser setup. Past releases have been based on MSDE but in the past year we've been having a lot of install issues: new installs hanging and leaving the system in an unknown state, upgrades disconnecting the database, etc. I migrated the application to SQL Server 2005 and the install is more reliable (as long as a user doesn't try to install over a broken MSDE installation). Since next year's release will be a complete redesign I figured now's the best time to address the database issue as well. The database has been abstracted from the rest of the application so I just need to choose which database(s) to use and write an implementation for each one. So far I've considered: SQL Server/ SQL Server Compact Edition Firebird (same DB engine is available in two different server modes and an embedded dll) Each has its own merits but I'm also interested in any other suggestions. This is a fairly simple program and its data requirements are simple as well. I don't expect it to strain whatever database I eventually choose. So easy configuration and deployment hold more weight than performance.

• Stage untracked files for commit without staging tracked file changes

  Oftentimes, when using git, I find myself in this situation: I have changes to several files, but I only want to commit parts of them. I have added several untracked files, which I want to track and commit. Solving the first part is easy; I run: git add -p Then, I choose which hunks to stage, and which hunks remain in my working tree, but unstaged. However, git's patch mode skips over untracked files. What I would like to do is something like: git add --untracked But no such option appears to exist. If I have, say, six untracked files, I could stage them using add in interactive mode and the add untracked option, like so: git add -i a<CR> 1<CR> 2<CR> 3<CR> 4<CR> 5<CR> 6<CR> <CR> q<CR> I feel like there is, or should be, a quicker way of doing this, though. What am I missing?

• Uncrackable anti-piracy protection/DRM even possible? [closed]

  I hope that this is programming-related enough. You have probably heard about Ubisofts recent steps against piracy. (New DRM requires a constant connection to the Ubisoft server) Many people including me see this as intolerable because the only ones suffering from it at the end are the paying customers. Now to the actual question(s): Ubisoft justified this by calling this mechanism "Uncrackable, only playable by the paying customers". Is a so called uncrackable DRM even possible? You can reverse-engineer and modify everything, even if it takes long. Isn't Ubisoft already lying by calling something not crackable? I mean, hey - With the game you get all its content (textures, models, you know) and some anti-piracy mechanism hardcoded into it. How could that be "uncrackable"? You can just patch the unwanted mechanisms out ---- "Pirates" play the cracked game without problems and the paying customers are the idiots by having constant problems with the game and being unable to play it without a (working) internet connection. What are the points Ubisoft sees in this? If they are at least a bit intelligent and informed they know their anti-piracy protection won't last long. All they get is lower sales, angry customers and happy pirates and crackers.

  I've created a view-based application. I've placed a Navigation Bar on the view and two buttons. I'd like to change the title of the nav bar after pressing the buttons. In IB I've connected the buttons with the corresponding actions. Debugging shows that the actions are getting called but the title of the nav bar is not changed. • TFS query mixing Tasks and Bugs, sorted by Priority

  We're using TFS with MSF for Agile 4.2 on a project, and I have a bunch of work to do, both Tasks and Bugs. Both are prioritized by our managers, and assigned due dates and target releases. I use a Work Item query as my main TODO list, and I want to list all the Work Items assigned to me, in order by due date and priority. Problem: I can't seem to find a way to write a unified query that will list both Tasks and Bugs sorted by date and then priority. The problem is that Tasks and Bugs use different fields for Priority. So, my query currently lists the tasks by Due Date, then by Task Priority, then it lists Bugs by Due Date, then by Priority. So, I see tasks that are due later than bugs: Title Due Date Priority Task Priority task1 4/23/2010 Medium task2 4/23/2010 High task3 4/30/2010 Low task4 4/30/2010 Medium bug1 4/23/2010 1 bug2 4/23/2010 2 What I want: Title Due Date Priority Task Priority task1 4/23/2010 Medium task2 4/23/2010 High bug1 4/23/2010 1 bug2 4/23/2010 2 task3 4/30/2010 Low task4 4/30/2010 Medium I don't care if the bugs come before or after the tasks on the same due date; I just want all the work items grouped together by due date, so I never see Tasks for a later due date before Bugs for an earlier one. Another problem is the sorting on Task Priority -- alpha sort means I can't get them to sort by the meaning of the priority. But that's a minor problem I can live with if I can get the Tasks and Bugs intermingled. Any way to do this in a single query?

• WCF throttling and emptying the listenBacklog quickly

  I'm sort of a WCF newbie (inheriting tasks from someone) and I'm trying to better throttle my application. We have a service that sends print jobs to the Windows print queue and it seems that rather than dumping all of the jobs into the queue it holds on to them in the listenBacklog and slowly releases them to the Windows print queue. I'd like to implement a recent patch to Rack that allows me to specify how sessions are serialized; specifically, I'd like to use Rack::Session::Cookie::Identity as the session processor.
