• How to find the number of inversions in an array ?

  This is an phone interview question: "Find the number of inversions in an array". I guess they mean O(N*log N) solution since O(N^2) is trivial. I guess it cannot be better than O(N*log N) since sorting is O(N*log N) I have checked a similar question from SO and can summarize the answers as follows: Calculate half the distance the elements should be moved to sort the array : copy the array and sort the copy. For each element of the original array a[i] find it's position j in the sorted copy (binary search) and sum abs(i - j)/2. Modify merge sort : modify merge to count inversions between two sorted arrays (it takes O(N)) and run merge sort with the modified merge. Does it make sense ? Are there other (maybe simpler) solution ? Isn't it too hard for a phone interview ?

  I'm trying to develop an app that can recognize an active object (for example: a memory) that touch the smartphone display. Before I start to develop I've to know if there's any objects that my touch screen display can recognize? Which device can be recognizable by a smartphone display? I'm interested to know that for iPhone or for Android phone. I found this app and you can see that with a card I can interact with a mobile device, now I'm asking you if anyone know how to do this kind of app with an iPhone or with an Android phone. • Can't install APK hosted my own apache server

  I've exported an apk from eclipse. I am able to install it without any problem if I copy it to the phone's sd card. When trying to download via phone's (Galaxy S) browser I get: "Download unsuccessful". I have set mime type application/vnd.android.package-archive in the mime.types, restarted apache, still same result. Also tried : <a href="downloads/my_apk.apk" type="application/vnd.android.package-archive">Download App</a> Still no luck. I am able to download and install applications from android market. I suspect that apache is not sending the mime type but this is just a shot in the dark. How can I fix the problem and be able to install APKs from my web server? (or at least to check if apache sends correct header with mime type) Any help will be appreciated.

• I can't understand GroupJoin where i will need it in database relationships.

  Hello Everybody I am thinking 5-6 hours to understand something about GroupJoin. I am talking about query with linq for Database tables.I understand what Join and GroupJoin does but I really couldn't understand where i will need it.I feel that Join does all what i will need but if there is something which Join can't without GroupJoin so i feel that situation is meaningless or useless. For example: Persons table in relation with Phones and Phones table hold foreign keys of Persons and one person can have one more phone number.If we want to brings all persons who has phone numbers and who hasn't too so we will need GroupJOin but what for we will need this query ? Can u give me good reason , example or explenation for using GroupJoin ?

• Create web page launcher, losing focus

  I have created a php webpage. I now want to create a launcher application in android phone, it simply opens the browser with the url "http://<mywebsite>/m". I use uri intent to launch the browser in onCreate function. public void onCreate(...) { .... startActivity(new Intent(Intent.ACTION_VIEW, new Uri(http://<mywebsite>/m))); ... } I execute this program in my G1 phone (Cyan Mod 5). However, when I click the "Home" key, and then re-enter my application through Task list, I lose focus for my last started browser, and the screen blank Any suggestion?! Should I need any code in onResume function to re-focus my web!?

  I have a rockchip based Android tv box with heavily modified firmware. The box does not support 3g by default and I am trying to get the mobile data connection to work. I have understood that the Phone.apk and telephony provider apk has to be installed to /system/app. The logs report that the mobile data is enabled and the the phone service is running. However there is no mobile data in Settings and the Dialer app is not shown in launcher application list. What prevents them from showing up ?

  I'd like to run an Android background service that will act as a keylistener from the home screen or when the phone is asleep. Is this possible?   I'm building a webapp for Android smartphones that runs with the OS internet browser. the main interface is to input datas. the data is added to a queue (android 1.5: gears, android 2.x: html5). Each 5 minutes (using setTimeout), the script looks if an internet connection is active, and if so, sends all the queue to the server. If the phone is plugged on the wall and the webpage is ontop, the timeout works. if the browser is minimized or another application runs on top of it, the timeout doesn't work. if the phone is in sleep mode it doesn't work either. can only native apps runs in background?

I want create a single record for these three records based on substring(name,1,4) place_code ( I am lucky here for all the similar records satisfies this condition and unique in the table .) For the other columns which record column length has max . • disable download of my paid app in Android

  I have a paid app in the store which will remove the ads in another app when it is installed on that device. Now I want to remove this 'remove ads' app, as I want to have an in-app payement for this for instance (or maybe I just keep the ads version only). But the problem is, if I unpublish the app, people who bought it will not be able to download it again when they get a new phone or reset their phone. How to I keep the app in the Play Store, but prevent people from buying it? Is this possible? My backup plan is: make the app cost 10.000 euro's and put in the message that this app should not be bought anymore. But I don't like that...

• Android GPS app not closing connection

  Hi there, Fairly new to Android, so just trying to work out: I have a simple Maps app that plots a couple of locations. It's a demo for a potentially bigger app later. The one thing I would like to do is make it exit correctly. I want to assume that when a user hits the "Home" or "Back" button on the phone, that they have exited the app. I want when this has happened for the GPS process to shut down. I can't seem to find any examples of how to do this correctly. I have an onDestroy() subclass with a super.onDestroy() method but this doesn't seem to cut it. I've tested on my phone and while everything else seems to work fine, this is bugging me. I keep seeing the GPS icon in the notifications bar. To give you an example, this doesn't happen when you leave GoogleMaps. Anyone any ideas or know what I'm missing? T
