• Fetch videos from sony handycam to linux

  I've got a Sony Handycam DCR-DVD101. When I plug connect the USB cable to my laptop (Ubuntu 10) it doesn't mount any storage device. • Stop Picasa (Mac) from scanning my harddrive

  I want to use Picasa desktop app instead of the tedious & clunky web interface to share a couple of photos. Every time I launch Picasa it proceeds to open an annoying pop-up/tool-tip which flicks through every file on my HD using <=95% of CPU. I don't want this so I click the X. It appears again. I try to drag it somewhere less annoying onscreen but it pings back. I look in prefs for an option to turn it off. I give up and quit app until a new build comes out, which I download and repeat the above. WTF?! I understand Google can't be as cool as Apple - iPhoto isn't perfect by any means but at least it looks nice and 'just works'. I want to launch Picasa, not have it go through everything, not have 1000's of random pics and HD cruft on display in the list, and then perhaps drag in a few photos and upload them. Any idea of if that is possible? </rant>

• PHP and Ruby: how to leverage both? and, is it worth it?

  As you might have noticed from the title, this is not a "PHP or Ruby", or a "PHP vs. Ruby" question. This is a question on how to leverage PHP + Ruby in the same business. I myself am a PHP developer, I love the language because of its convenience and I specially love the ecosystem of resources that surround it: Joomla, Drupal, Wordpress, Symfony2, Doctrine2, etc. However, the language itself can be a little disappointing sometimes. OTOH, Ruby looks like a very beautiful language and —from studying it superficially in several aspects— I could say it is leaner than Python as a language per se. However, from what I've seen there is pretty much only RoR making noise, and I don't like RoR so much (mainly because its model layer). As Co-CEO and CTO at my company I'm trying to think outside of the box since I want to start to focus on the human side of technology and see if its sane to use both PHP and Ruby. Here are some random thoughts: Ruby folk seem to be generally better suited programmers than PHP folk (in terms of averages), I know the previous statement is somewhat baloney because very good and well architected PHP can be written, but I'd say the Ruby programmer culture is better than PHP's. The thing about Ruby is that it seems better suited for rapid development, I don't really know if this is only the case for RoR, but I do know that there are certain practices (perhaps not so good) like monkey patching that let business needs be satified quicker. From a marketing point of view (yep, sometimes you need to leverage the marketing BS for the sake of your company) Ruby seems better while PHP carries some stigmas. PHP 5.4 is bringing traits, and that is better/cleaner than mixins. That could really make PHP as lean as Ruby —or more— for certain stuff. Now, concretely, my questions: Would a PHP programmer want to learn Ruby?, I know I do, but conversely, would a Ruby programmer want to learn PHP?. What kinds of projects or situations would be better suited for Ruby that are not suited for PHP?. What is the actual ecosystem of Ruby?, aside from RoR, I have not seen other hyped technologies/frameworks (I've seen RSpec, but I confess being a total noob on what BDD really consists of and its implications). Supposing there are a certain type of projects ideal for Ruby, would there be a moment that its better to move it to PHP?. I know PHP can handle lots of stuff, but I've read that Ruby has its limitations when scaling (or is that RoR?, or is that baloney for both?). Finally and most importantly, would it be sane to maintain projects in two languages?, or is that just stupid. As I said, it looks like Ruby is leaner on the short term and that can make a project happen and succeed, but I'm not so sure about that on the long run. I'm looking for insights mainly from people that know well the strengths and weaknesses of the languages —preferably both of them— and Ruby's ecosystem in real practice, meaning: frameworks and applications like the ones I quoted from PHP's ecosystem.   I am trying to configure DNSSec with BIND9 on CentOS 6.4 running DirectAdmin control panel. • file association in Windows 8

  Associating a file to a program should be easy in Windows. However, i find it rather difficult when I'm working on Windows 8. associating a file to a desktop application that I install on my computer is easy because the whole operation is entirely the same with that in the previous Windows releases. What I find rather difficult is associating a file to a Metro apps that I download from the store. So far, I have been using Multimedia 8 (a metro app) to open my video files. However, this app cannot handle particular files-like *.dat-that can be associated easily to desktop video applications, such as media player classic and the like. When I try to associate my DAT files to Multimedia 8, there is indeed a "look for another app on this PC" option at the bottom of the "open with" pop up. But alas, I cannot figure out how to locate my Multimedia 8 app to which I want to associate my DAT file (as well as other video files that are not yet associated to this metro app). If anyone of you knows how to locate those metro apps, please tell me. many thanks

I am attending their conference for the first time as it relates to my job at Swank Motion Pictures and what we do for our various markets. I will post my notes here. The Evolution of Television and Home Entertainment by Patrick Cosson, Veebeam TV has been the center of living rooms for sometime. Conversations and culture evolve around the TV. The way we consume this content has dramatically been changing. After TV, we had the MTV revolution of TV. It has created shorter attention spans, it made us more materialistic, narcissistic, and not easily impressed. Then we came to the Internet. The amount of content has expanded. It contains a ton of user-generated content, provides filtering, organization, distribution. We now have a problem. We are in the age of digital excess. We can access whatever we want. In conjunction with this – we are moving. The challenge we have now is curation. The trends  we see: rapid shift from scheduled to on demand consumption. A move to Internet protocols from cable Rapid fragmentation of media a transition from the TV set to a variety of screens Social connections bring mediators and amplifiers. TiVo – the shift to on demand It is because of a time-crunch Provides personal experiences Once old consumption habits are changed, there is no way back! Experiences are that people are loading up content and then bringing it with them on planes, to hotels, etc. Rapid fragmentation of media sources Many new professional content sources and channels, the rise of digital distribution, and the rise of user-generated content contribute to the wealth of content sources and abundant choice. Netflix, BBC iPlayer, hulu, Pandora, iTunes, Amazon Video, Vudu, Voddler, Spotify (these companies didn’t exist 5 years ago). People now expect this kind of consumption. People are now thinking how to deliver all these tools. Transition from the TV set to multi-screens The TV screen has traditionally been the dominant consumption screen for TV and video. Now the PC, game consoles, and various mobile devices are rapidly becoming common video devices. Multi-screens are now the norm. Social connections becoming key mediators What increasingly funnels traffic on the web, social networking enablers, will become an integral part of the discovery, consumption and sharing model for Television. The revolution will be broadcasted on Facebook and Twitter. There is business disruption There are a lot of new entrants Rapid internationalization Increasing competition from existing media players A fragmenting audience base Web browser Freedom to access any site The fight over the walled garden Most devices are not powerful enough to support a full browser PC will always be present in the living room Wireless link between PC and TV Output 1080p, plays anything, secure Key players and their challenges Services Internet media is increasingly interconnected to social media and publicly shared UGC Content delivery moving to IPTV Rights management issues are creating silos and hindering a great user experience and growth Devices Devices are becoming people’s windows into all kinds of media from all kinds of sources There won’t be a consolidation of the device landscape, rather the opposite Finding the right niche makes the most sense. • Setup a new domain controller over a temporary VPN, but now Windows delays startup?

  I'm migrating servers from colo locations to Amazon's VPC EC2 instances. If anyone hasn't worked with Amazon VPC before, VPN is a pain in the arse! Anyways, I setup a new server that acts as the domain controller for our Amazon VPC. In order to migrate all the user accounts from our existing domain controllers I manually connected to our colo VPN using my user account on the new Amazon EC2 machine. I was able to join the domain and the new Amazon server became another domain controller on our network. So far so good. The problem I'm having is that when booting the EC2 domain controller (which is no longer connected to the VPN so it can't communicate with the existing controllers), it takes a good 6-8 minuted before I can remote into the server (instead of the 1-2 minutes it should take). Also, during this time most of the services we also run (like IIS) also give 404 errors until the 6-8 minutes have passed. It's almost like the domain controller is attempting to reach the other domain controllers first and after 6-8 minutes it falls back to the one located on the local machine? I don't think that's what's happening though, because Server 2008 R2 doesn't have primary and backup domain controllers. They're all equal as far as Windows is concerned. For my network adapter I have only one DNS listed, 127.0.0.1, so it should be looking up the local domain controller and not the other domain controllers it connected to over VPN when VPN was enabled. In the server logs I'm seeing these warnings pop up during a reboot: The winlogon notification subscriber is taking long time to handle the notification event (CreateSession). The winlogon notification subscriber took 409 second(s) to handle the notification event (CreateSession). Any ideas on what's happening here? I would try removing the existing domain controllers from the new Amazon EC2 machine, but I still need to connect over VPN a few times to migrate some data between the servers, and I don't want that change being reflected back to the other domain controllers in our colo locations.

• Oredev 2011 Trip Report

  Oredev had its seventh annual conference in the city of Malmo, Sweden last week. The name "Oredev" signifies to the part that Malmo is connected with Copenhagen with Oresund bridge. There were about 1000 attendees with several speakers from all over the world. The first two days were hands-on workshops and the next three days were sessions. There were different tracks such as Java, Windows 8, .NET, Smart Phones, Architecture, Collaboration, and Entrepreneurship. And then there was Xtra(ck) which had interesting sessions not directly related to technology. I gave two slide-free talks in the Java track. The first one showed how to build an end-to-end Java EE 6 application using NetBeans and GlassFish. The complete instructions to build the application are explained in detail here. This 3-tier application used Java Persistence API, Enterprsie Java Beans, Servlet, Contexts and Dependency Injection, JavaServer Faces, and Java API for RESTful Services. The source code built during the application can be downloaded here (LINK TBD). The second session, slide-free again, showed how to take a Java EE 6 application into production using GlassFish cluster. It explained: Create a 2-instance GlassFish cluster Front-end with a Web server and a load balancer Demonstrate session replication and fail over Monitor the application using JavaScript The complete instructions for this session are available here. Oredev has an interesting way of collecting attendee feedback. The attendees drop a green, yellow, or red card in a bucket as they walk out of the session. Not everybody votes but most do. Other than the instantaneous feedback provided on twitter, this mechanism provides a more coarse grained feedback loop as well. The first talk had about 67 attendees (with 23 green and 7 yellow) and the second one had 22 (11 green and 11 yellow). The speakers' dinner is a good highlight of the conference. It is arranged in the historic city hall and the mayor welcomed all the speakers. As you can see in the pictures, it is a very royal building with lots of history behind it. Fortunately the dinner was a buffet with a much better variety unlike last year where only black soup and geese were served, which was quite cultural BTW ;-) The sauna in 85F, skinny dipping in 35F ocean and alternating between them at Kallbadhus is always very Swedish. Also spent a short evening at a friend's house socializing with other speaker/attendees, drinking Glogg, and eating Pepperkakor.  The welcome packet at the hotel also included cinnamon rolls, recommended to drink with cold milk, for a little more taste of Swedish culture. Something different at this conference was how artists from Image Think were visually capturing all the keynote speakers using images on whiteboards. • .NET 3.5 installation comes up with Error 0x800F0906, then 0x800F0081F using dism

  I've recently tried installing .NET 3.5 for an application on Windows 8.1. I used the OS's popup thing to download/install .NET 3.5 and always get error code 0x800F0906. Upon further research, I found I would have to pop in my Windows 8 CD and install it with this command, where "E:\" is where my CD is mounted: Dism /online /enable-feature /featurename:NetFx3 /All /Source:E:\sources\sxs /LimitAccess This and any derivative of it (e.g., removing /LimitAccess) has not worked for me and has either given me the same error code (0x800F0906) or a different one, 0x800F0081F. I've even copied the sxs folder to my hard drive, just in case something was going on with the CD Drive, only to have the same results. In that case, I used this command line: Dism /online /enable-feature /featurename:NetFx3 /All /Source:C:\dotnet35 /LimitAccess I find this surreal because in both cases, the files are indeed there but the program thinks it's not. Here's the CBS.log file. Any ideas on how to fix this? Any help is very appreciated :) EDIT: I now have a proper dism.log file, I'm not sure what happened to the last one or why it did that. Here's the link to the new log file. It's interesting to note that it doesn't recognize some of the commands in the script such as "featurename" or "source".

• Adobe Reader Wants Sensitive Email Details

  When I run Adobe Reader, it tells me: Either there is no default mail client or the current mail client cannot fulfill the messaging request. Please run Microsoft Outlook and set it as the default mail client. I have a couple of issues with this: 1) It presupposes everyone has Microsoft Office installed. Not all home users have the budget or inclination for this. 2) It presupposes everyone wants Microsoft Outlook to be their default mail client. 3) I have Microsoft Office (incl. Outlook) installed and set as my default mail client. Even if I make it the default mail client from within the Adobe Reader Preferences, that doesn't stop the dialog appearing. 4) I thought I'd give Adobe Reader a new email address in the preferences, just to get it to stop bugging me. I notice, though, that it want's the SMTP and POP addresses and the account password? They have got to be kidding? I just want to view PDF files. How do I get the message to go away without telling Adobe my life story, giving them my mother's maiden name, my favourite movie, my place of birth, the name of my first goldfish and emptying the contents of my wallet for them?

• A view from the call center for the Nashville Flood telethon

  I want to break away from my usual topic of something technical and talk about what I experienced tonight while working in the call center for the Nashville Flood telethon, which was broadcast on WSMV, CNN, and The Weather Channel.  We started receiving calls about 7pm local time and to be honest, I had no idea what to expect when going into this.  I mean, I'm a pretty good talker, but this is different...We had a good script of what to say and how we were supposed to say it, as well as paper forms and pens that we used to collect information from people who wanted to donate their money to help.  I took my first few calls pretty easily and it went pretty quick and easy.  Everyone was upbeat and happy to be in the call center as well as people happy to be donating money. Pizza, snacks, and soft drinks were flowing well.  Everyone is smiling and happy.  :) About 3 or 4 calls into my night, I got a call from a lady that had lost 2 family members in West Nashville who drowned in the floods.  She was crying when she called and I of course tried to console her.  She told me how bad her situation was, losing family members and much of her neighborhood.  After all this, she still just wanted to help other people.  She was donating all the money that she could to the telethon and I want to share a direct quote from her: "I want to donate this instead of buying flowers for my family members' funeral because people out there need help.". Please let me pause while I get myself together <again>.  That caught me so off guard (and still does). I had kids calling wanting to donate their allowance, open their piggy banks, whatever they could do.  These are kids.  Kids not much older than my boys.  Kids who should be focused on buying the next cool video game or toy or whatever but wanted to do something.  Everyone just seemed to want to help. I took calls from as far away as British Columbia as well and pretty much coast to coast.  how cool is that? Yet another thing that caught me off guard.  This kind lady that called from British Columbia told me how much she loved visiting Nashville and just hated to see this happen.  I belive that she said that she will be attending the CMA Fest this year too.  I was sure to tell her not to cancel her plans!  :) It felt like every call I took (and I took A LOT, as did everyone else) was very personal and heartfelt.  I've never had the privelage to do anything like this and fell lucky to have been able to help out with answering phones and logging donations.  Nashville will bounce back very quickly, people are out there day and night helping each other, and the spirits are very high here.  I hope that one day, my kids read this blog and better understand who they are, where they come from, and what the human spirt is and can be.  I love this city, I love the people here, I love the culture and even more than ever am proud to say that this is me.  This is us.  We are Nashville!

• Virus / Malware: Explorer window with strange user logged into Hotmail

  I was looking into a PC, the user of which had complained that he couldn't connect to the internet and that the PC was experiencing random restarts. The PC runs WinXP SP3. On examination, I found that the Wireless Zero Configuration service was stopped. I enabled that and the internet was back on(The pc connected through wifi). Then I started firefox and browsed to gmail.com. I did not launch any other program, except for a few explorer windows. It was then I noticed a window had popped up(it was not a pop up). It had the explorer folder icon and instead of explorer folder contents, it showed a hotmail page, with a user named "Homer Stinson" logged in. The titlebar was empty and there were no toolbars. I asked the client whether this was his email id, which he said it was not. I opened task manager, which did not show this explorer window in it's Application tab. I switched back to the 'rogue' window and found that the hotmail settings page was now open, which later changed to the hotmail edit profile page for the same user. I was not clicking anything. Then suddenly the window closed. I checked the autorun locations, fired up a Malwarebytes Anti Malware scan which gave a clean result. The system also had an updated installation of AVG. I don't want a solution for this virus(?) problem. I asked this here because I wanted to know if somebody has come across something similar. What kind of malware can this be?   I want to improve our mail server lists by handling all the bounces we get in our websites. I have a website which has over 8000+ users and another website which as over 1500+ users, they are emailed various notifications every second, ie. job alerts, email alerts, I am using POP connections with EXIM on APACHE server, most scripts are based on PHP language generates email on the fly. Problems i have But some users has registered long time ago and now quite few has bounce email address Some users register with dummy emails like [email protected] which never existed but a valid email address, any chance of stopping this without asking them login to the email account and clicking links which dont work most times.. (too annoying to the end user) Server is sending unnecessary emails can be avoided if i know they dont exists ? Solutions i need to have Is there a way i can download the bounce email list somewhere (WHM/Cpanel), i know exim mail has it but its not readable (i need a file like CSV or something similar to scan them over and write a php script to delete the users from the database ?) I need to know if there is any function in the PHP that can check the existence of the email address on the fly ? so that i can set the email send function in the mailer class to check before it sends out. On the server will bouncing emails are going to eatup lots of server resources ? like memory/cpu on processing them ? or are they are minimal where we dont have to worry about this at all ? May be a opensoruce or linux software to capture them and view them in a report basis and cleaning them up ? I am not a linux expert or server admin but i do lot of PHP coding, so please be descriptive of the solutions specially if they are linux commands Thank you!

• How to send Content-Disposition headers in apache for files?

  I have a directory of text files that I'm serving out with apache 2. Normally when I (or any user) access the files they see them in their browser. I want to 'force'* the web browser to pop up a 'Save as' dialog box. I know this is possible to do with the Content-Disposition headers (more info). Is there some way to turn that on for each file? Ideally I'd like something like this: <Directory textfiles> AutoAddContentDispositionHeaders On </Directory> And then apache would set the correct content disposition header, including using the same filename. Something like this might be possible with the apache Header directive. Bonus points if it's included by standing in apache in debian. I could do a simple PHP wrapper script that takes in a filename argument, makes the call to header(...) and then prints the file, but then i have to validdate input etc. that's work I'm trying to avoid. * I know you can't actually force things when it comes to the web

• Outlook, Word, and normal.dot (2003 Edition)

  I have one user that for some reason has been having macro issues with her normal.dot file. At first the fix was just remove the file because she isn't actually needing to save anything. This was really a temp fix. We found out that for some reason every time she opened up word it was trying to modify normal.dot but not asking. I set it up to ask so at least we could control the changes going on to normal.dot. There was one file disabled in Word that we enabled because it was a document she never used anymore, making us think that maybe that was the issue. We have automatic antivirus updates and scans so there is little chance of a virus. The issue has stopped as far as just using Word itself. She can open, close, edit, save, etc and never get the dialog. In Outlook however if she clicks reply or forward to an e-mail but decides not to send it, and just close it. She gets the pop up to save changes to normal.dot. This leads me to believe something in outlook about how she is setup to use Word as an e-mail editor is causing the problem. Am I even on the right track here? Short form: Word works fine with normal.dot, as an Outlook mail editor wants to change normal.dot. No idea what to do.

• OS X, Chrome, and Spaces annoyance

  Here's my problem: I use Google Chrome as my web browser on MacOS X Snow Leopard. I am a keyboard shortcut addict, and I use QuickSilver to create keyboard shortcuts for anything I can. One of the most common things that I do is to open a new web browser window. But I use Spaces frequently to partition my tasks that I am currently working on, and when I open a web browser or web page with a QuickSilver trigger, spaces switches to the last space that I used Chrome on and opens a new tab, which often distracts me for hours because it brings me to a different space and thus a different task. I can fix this by right-clicking on the Google Chrome icon and clicking the "New Window" option, which opens a new window on the current space. I have tried to compose an AppleScript to do something like this, with no success. It has become a serious problem. Back when I used Firefox, I solved the problem by changing a preference item that says "Always open pop-up links in a new window" or something like that, which was kind of a sledge hammer approach, but it worked. I can always go back to Firefox, but I thought I'd ask my question here first. Anyone with any ideas?

• gpg symmetric encryption using pipes

  I'm trying to generate keys to lock my drive (using DM-Crypt with LUKS) by pulling data from /dev/random and then encrypting that using GPG. In the guide I'm using, it suggests using the following command: dd if=/dev/random count=1 | gpg --symmetric -a >./[drive]_key.gpg If you do it without a pipe, and feed it a file, it will pop up an (n?)curses prompt for you to type in a password. However when I pipe in the data, it repeats the following message four times and sits there frozen: pinentry-curses: no LC_CTYPE known assuming UTF-8 It also says can't connect to '/root/.gnupg/S.gpg-agent': File or directory doesn't exist, however I am assuming that this doesn't have anything to do with it, since it shows up even when the input is from a file. So I guess my question boils down to this: is there a way to force gpg to accept the passphrase from the command line, or in some other way get this to work, or will I have to write the data from /dev/random to a temporary file, and then encrypt that file? (Which as far as I know should be alright due to the fact that I'm doing this on the LiveCD and haven't yet created the swap, so there should be no way for it to be written to disk.)

• Virtual Wifi Issue Windows 7

  Lately I've been trying to use my laptop as a wireless router in my room. I have it connected to my school's network through ethernet, and I want to set up wireless so that I can use Wifi on my Android phone and iPod Touch. In the past, I used Connectify, but I started having an issue where my phone would find the network, connect, attempt to get the IP, and then suddenly the network would disappear. Then it'd pop up again, and the same process would happen over and over. I decided that I'd totally uninstall Connectify, but after that, neither Virtual Router Manager nor the command prompt could create a viable network either. My phone and even my iPod now encounter the same problem. Neither can successfully connect. So evidently there is something wrong with the laptop's virtual wifi feature, and I have no idea what that could be. I've tried enabling certain services that virtual wifi supposedly relies on, but some of them don't start, namely Remote Access Connection Manager. But I also have read that these enable on their own and that if they are normally not enabled it's fine. Furthermore, I even uninstalled and reinstalled the drivers for my wireless card. Any ideas as to why my virtual wifi won't function? Anything? I really would love to get this working...

• Windows Vista - Can Boot into Safe Mode Command Prompt, Cannot Access Flash Drive

  Hey there, Got a laptop dropped into my lap. Has Vista installed. Normal boot never gets past the login screen. Safe mode will get past, but just barely. I can try and start the task manager at that point, but it never opens. Only reliable way to do anything I've got is the safe mode command prompt... Boots up and logs in fine. I can't see anything noticably wrong via regedit, but it's been a long time since I've had to fix up a Windows box... not sure that I would. Problem I'm having, is that I want to run ComboFix/etc, but have no way to get them on there... When I pop a flash drive in, it seems to mount it (flash drive flickers as normal) but it never seems to be mounted... I cannot access it through any drive letter on the command line. I managed to start the device manager (devmgmt.msc) and the flash drive was recognized and listed... Any ideas on how to get this thing going again? (Short of a reinstall.) (It has no CD drive, either, so burning files to CD would not be easy...) Thanks! Adam

• filesystem compatible with freenas and windows

  Hi all, I'm planning on using FreeNAS (was considering openfiler but freenas seems simpler) for my home NAS box running off ESXI. I have managed to get local sata drives to mount in ESXI (http://serverfault.com/questions/216902/esxi-add-datastore-without-partitioning). I've had one of the drives fail on my before and I was able to retrieve most of the data off it using windows tools (I'm not much of a linux guy I know enough to be dangerous!). If I go the freenas route in the event that something goes bad what would be the best file system to use so that I could pop the drive out of the freenas box (vm) and put it in another pc running windows so I could try and run various recovery tools to get the data back. All in all its not a major problem if I lose the data just would be a bit annoying, so I'm not looking for suggestions around backing up etc. I was considering using NTFS that the drives are already formatted as but it appears that while freenas does support NTFS that its a bit buggy and not 100% reliable, anyone know if this is still true? Read that on a forum somewhere.

All of the new "connectivity" is, I think, leading businesses to a business model built around the concept of the network or ecosystem instead of the old "stand-by-yourself" approach. • Installing Ruby 1.9.3 OSX 10.7.4 breaks after altering PATH

  I was having trouble installing ruby 1.9.3-p194 from ruby 1.8.7 on my mac osx 10.7.4. I have was trying to fix my homebrew after running "brew doctor" and got the message of "/usr/bin occurs before /usr/local/bin This means that system-provided programs will be used instead of those provided by Homebrew. The following tools exist at both paths: c++-4.2 cpp-4.2 erb g++-4.2 gcc-4.2 gcov-4.2 gem i686-apple-darwin11-cpp-4.2.1 i686-apple-darwin11-g++-4.2.1 i686-apple-darwin11-gcc-4.2.1 irb rake rdoc ri ruby testrb" I fixed it by entering the following, which I found on another stackoverflow answer: export PATH="/usr/local/bin:/usr/local/sbin:~/bin$PATH" Lo and behold! when I typed that ruby updates to 1.9.3-p194. Ruby files seem to compile and run just fine. However, afterward, my navigation around terminal is messed up severely. For instance I can't do the command "open example_file.html" and have the file pop up in Chrome, instead I get the error: "-bash: open: command not found" Also, when I change directory, I get an error, inputting "$ cd desktop" yields the output, "-bash: dirname: command not found" but the directory does then changes... strange. When I exit out of a terminal window all this resets. I'm back to Ruby 1.8.7, have to use the PATH command again to update to 1.9.3, command line navigation gets broken again. Any guidance on how to remedy so I can use 1.9.3-p194 and also have normal terminal navigation would be greatly appreciated.

• IIS permission configuration issue

  Sorry the title of this question is a little ambiguous but I don't really have any idea where the issue lies - I'm seeking some clarification of the server error logs. Basically, I had a dedicated server running Windows 2003 and Plesk (v8 I think). Last week the server hardware failed and the entire thing had to be rebuilt from scratch. New hardware was put in, new operating system (Win2008), new Plesk installation (v9.5), new software (MSSQL etc) then all data ported over manually from old C and D drives to restore all 30 client sites. It was hell! All has been okay for a couple of days now but about an hour ago POP! Suddenly all sites went down giving a 500 error. Restarting all services eventually brought everything back online, but I'm now living in total fear. It can - and probably will - happen again. The guys on support gave me the following errors from the server log: The Template Persistent Cache initialization failed for Application Pool 'ASP.NET v4.0 Classic' because of the following error: Could not create a Disk Cache Sub-directory for the Application Pool. The data may have additional error codes.. The worker process for application pool 'domain1.com(domain)(2.0)(pool)' encountered an error 'Cannot read configuration file ' trying to read configuration data from file '\\?\C:\inetpub\temp\apppools\domain1.com(domain)(2.0)(pool).config', line number '0'. The data field contains the error code. The worker process for application pool 'PleskControlPanel' encountered an error 'Cannot read configuration file ' trying to read configuration data from file '\\?\C:\inetpub\temp\apppools\PleskControlPanel.config', line number '0'. The data field contains the error code. The support guys are so ambiguous about this and it scares me horribly. Can anyone positively identify the cause of this error which lead to all client website going offline? What can be done to prevent it from happening again? Any pointers would be very much appreciated! Thanks folks...

• CDROM does not appear on desktop, MACOS 10.5.7

  When I pop a CDROM into the drive of my Macbook Pro, It spins up, I hear it, but no icon appears on the desktop. (I think it's 10.5.7; actually not sure how to verify this on Mac, but I think I saw a 10.5.7 flash by somewhere). In the finder preferences, I have "Show these items on the Desktop" set to show HDs, External Disks, and CDs, DVDs, and ipods. All three of those are checked. I do see the internal HD on the desktop. In Disk utility I can see the CD/DVD hardware. It says "MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-857E...". From Disk Utility I can eject the drive. But in Finder, there is never a CD/DVD listed under "Devices". When I insert a disk, nothing happens, I cannot see it. I also cannot boot from bootable CDROMs by holding C down . Suggestions? I am not very experienced with Mac; I have used Windows for years. EDIT Two updates: I saw this article on support.apple.com, and modified the hostconfig appropriately. It did not have the AUTODISKMOUNT entry, so I added one, rebooted. Same behavior. It does not see the CDROM in Finder, does not mount it on desktop. I put an old manufactured CDROM into the drive, and voila! it showed up on the desktop. The CD that does not appear is a GNome Partition Editor Live CD, which I guess is based on debian. That CD boots in other (non-Mac) PCs. I want to use this to adjust the Bootcamp partition. Suggestions?
