• VMWare Headphone Issue

  I am running VMWare Workstation Version 7 on a Windows 7 partition on a Macbook Pro. I have built a virtual XP machine within vmware to run some old music programs. The sound from my virtual machines comes out of my macbook speakers but the volume is not controllable using my macbook volume controls, only by using the volume control on the XP machine. My problem is that i need to use headphones, and when i plug a headphone jack into my macbook, the sound from my vmware virtual machines still comes out of the macbook speakers. I am baffled. Please help. Thanks in advance...

  I'm trying to add shortcuts to folders in "My Computer". This .reg almost works, I can execute programs like EXPLORE.exe, but I want to open a folder in the same window. Can someone please point out how? • Windows 7 won't read from NAS on LAN

  I've got a Linkstation NAS drive on a local network. Having just got a new laptop with Windows 7 Home Professional, I can no longer read anything of the drive. I've tried accessing the drive using \192.168.1.55\share, using ftp programs such as WinSCP, filezilla and even using firefox to hit ftp://192.168.1.55. The really annoying thing is that through these methods I can see the files on the drive, counting out any kind of connection issues. I can navigate through the NAS file system, but as soon as I try and copy a file off the NAS, things just stop working. Accessing the drive through a WindowsXP machine works fine. So far I've tried: Disabling firewalls Adding the LmCompatibilityLevel key to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa Using the 40 - 56 bit encryption instead of the 128 bit. Has anyone got any suggestions of what I can check or try. This is driving me crazy and I'm totally out of ideas? Thanks

• Looking for a software solution which acts like a hardware KVM

  I've seen programs like Synergy before which allow a keyboard and mouse to be used across multiple systems. Unfortunately Synergy treats both systems like they are the same thing (when you move the mouse too far to the right it jumps to the other computer, along with keyboard input). I only have 1 monitor so what I need to do here is have a quick way to view my other desktop that is easy to manage. Remote desktop is difficult because you have to take it out of fullscreen, then minimize it and then re-maximize it when you want to use it again. If there were a single button I could hit to switch to the other computer that would be optimal. Both computers are on the same lan.

• File Saving Sometimes Fails

  When I attempt to save files, it sometimes (randomly) fails. In Blender, I sometimes get "Version Backup Failed: File Saved With @". In Visual Studio, building sometimes fails with an error message indicating that the target file/exe cannot be overwritten. If I wait a bit, I can save fine. It's almost as if programs are taking an abnormal amount of time to 'let go' of the files. What could be causing this behaviour? This seems to be caused by Windows Live Mesh monitoring my files, and locking them whenever it uploads the new versions (BAD considering the amount of times I save my files, even redundantly). Any suggestions to work around this behaviour? Should I switch to a better service to sync my files?

• Secure Login add on stopped working after installing BitDefender

  I'm using FF 3.5.4. with Secure Login 0.9.3 add on (lovely little thing). After a lot of persuading, my sys admin finally got to me, and I let him install BitDefender on my machine as well ... and naturally, like all anti virus programs do, it had to screw up something, and it was that add on. It says now in the add onns menu, that it isn't compatible with FF 3.5.4. (which is possible, I don' know, but it did work until one hour ago). What to do to make it work again? All ideas welcomed. I really hate writing all that logins/passwords by ahnd.

• How can I apply a DSP to my microphone in windows?

  I'd like to be able to run my microphone through arbitrary DSP filters--Mostly for compression and amplification, but also noise cancelation would be nice. I'd then like to take that output and put it back in a virtual audio device that I could use as input for skype, mumble, teamspeak, or any other VOIP program. With a program like Virtual Audio cable, I can do the 'fake devices' part but as far as I know it does not allow any kind of filtering inline. Does a program like this exist? Or some combination of programs that can be combined to accomplish this?

• Unable to remove "Run this program as an administrator" (greyed out) with Excel 2010

  I have issue with one of the user in Terminal Server 2008 R2 who has "Run this program as an administrator" checked and greyed out with Excel 2010. This causes UAC to popup requesting for administrator credential whenever user want to start excel. I found in excel 2010 properties Compatibility tab "Run this program as an administrator" is checked and greyed out (Unable to make any change) This issue only occurs in Excel 2010, all other Office programs does not has this option checked and greyed out. Currently UAC is set to Default (Second level to top) Other users in terminal server do not have "Run this program as an administrator" checked and it is NOT greyed out. The user who has issue is in the same group and has the setting as other users who doesn't has the issue in AD. Could anyone advise me how could I remove this "Run this program as an administrator" in option in Excel 2010? Thank you.

• Software to copy non-duplicate files from CD/DVD

  I have several CDs/DVDs which have partially overlapping content (the overlapping files are identical, but have different names), and some of the files are on my hard disk. I need to get the remaining unique files copied to my hard disk. I found a really good duplicate file finder, Duplicate Cleaner, which lets you select multiple folders and then finds duplicates by checksum (or file name, size, date) and is very fast, and free. It won't help me do what I want though, unless I just copied everything, and then deleted the duplicates - but I would have to do multiple cycles, as I don't have room to copy all the CDs/DVDs to my hard disk. I found a couple of file sync programs, but they don't have the compare function - the file names must match. (I tried other duplicate file finders on CNET, but they aren't as good as Duplicate Cleaner, and also don't have the functionality I need.) Thanks for any help.

• connecting to bsnl wll, with huawei fixed wireless modem with connected to usb port on linux mint.

  On windows, when I plugged in the usb connector, to the device was recognized as a mass storage device and installed all the drivers, to my computer, then the device, automatically restarted and started behaving like a modem, I'm writing this post, using the same modem, through windows... On linux mint (debian kernel, similar to ubuntu 8.10), the device is recognized as a mass storage device, some times, but, has no programs, useful for linux... When I use the modem on windows and restart the computer and login to linux, the device shows up as "not yet configured" in the terminal command "lsusb"... I googled a lot for solutions, tried many things, atlast, configured it and run the command "wvdial". But, get the error, that the modem is not responding, at last ! :'( Please help me out... Many more people are facing this problem, as I could discover, when I googled for it. this is the website address of huawei, the company of my modem... • Windows will not go into standby

  When I select Start-Turn off computer-Standby the 'turn off computer' option window closes, and then nothing else happens. I can start new applications, and Windows acts like I never selected standby. If I have a TV program scheduled to record I get a window asking if I'm sure, there are programs scheduled to record - and the computer just keeps running after I select yes. (If a program is not scheduled then that task in not running/in memory - this problem happens even if I'm not watching TV and no TV scheduling task is running.) This problem happens regardless of whether Media Center is running. Windows XP SP3 Media Center Edition, all current updates installed.

• Remove context menu items

  When I right click on a file and select open with, there are a bunch of irrelevant entries that I will never use. A lot of them are bits of the OS (e.g. Core Image Funhouse.app on image files) or at best dubious (I doubt I will ever want to open a .txt using Illustrator). Is there any way to remove items from the Open With menu? This is on OSX Lion 10.7.5. The only questions I could find related to this were about uninstalled programs remaining in the context menu.   I saw on one site that the new Windows 8 could load ISO images without the help of other programs. Is Windows 8 creating a new drive for every ISO? Or does it have one fake drive to load all ISOS in? How can I know if a file is really an ISO inside? Some PCs use UltraISO to open ISOs. If I just enter the ISO name in DOS, it is loading in UltraISO. How can I load the ISO only in Windows 8 on all PCs, whether they have UltraISO or not? How can I unload ISOs?

  I'm on windows 7 64 bit, i'm using the admin accouunt, i try to install some programs, but can't, i troubleshooted the error that i got, and turned out that windows installer service is stopped, i tried to start it, it says windows installer service could not be started because its disabled or it has no enabled devices associated with it. Error 1058 How to fix it? Note that the laptop has an expired bitdefender installed on it. I don't know if it's causing the problem or not, i just thought it was worth mentioning since i had many problems with misconfigured or expired antiviruses before. The MSIServer could not be started as well, and i tried to run as administrator The laptop is not mine, i'm just trying to fix it

  I am curious about if there is any project about a replacement for the current unix-shells (like bash, ash, rsh ...), at least adding some new ideas or paradigm in this area. I was searching but i found very few information, this project http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Friendly_interactive_shell seems interesting, but not so diferent from the nowadays solutions. What do you think? Do you imagine a linux-distribution on 2020 that still having bash? How can be an evolution of this programs? Br To be clearer, about new ideas, i was talking of something like: control-Z functionality Colaboration features (like remote desktop) so you can invite someone to join and participate on your shell session Possibility to see the result of a command before to really apply it to your system (this is closely related with the 1st point ctl-Z) etc...

  At the moment I am running a Windows Terminal Server 2008 for around 10 clients that use the server to run programs and access data. Is there anyway to separate the resources of each user so that they do not impact each other in terms of resources. User 1: Opens program User 2: Notices slow down I have looked into using Windows System Resource Manager but do not know if it provides what I need and if there are any other 3rd party tools that also provide this functionality. And problem is this: when i try to boot from live cd, after boot disk with Windows not detected. Going by Company Politics I'm suppose to A: Disabled the standardlized Administrator (Done, can do that in task sequence) B: Create a new Administrator called 'ITadmin' and set a fixed password C: Join a Domain (Done that aswell in the Task Sequence) D: Use a Domain Admin to install programs that would otherwise give problems if attempted to install through Local Admin, like Dynamics AX As written I join the computer to the Domain During the OSD, and as Result have the correct Domain Admins added as Administrators through GPO, but I don't know how to use them. I'm looking at CustomSettings.ini in the MDT pack and thinking its gotta be possible to do it from here? or from the unattend.xml in pseudo here is what I wanna Add: AddLocalAdmin: ITadmin Password: 1234 UseThisAccountToInstallOSD: Domain\Install_User Password: 1234 Any help appreciated, can't seem to google my way out of this one.

  Hi guys. I'm appologizing in advance to the guys who will tell me this isn't a tech/server/IT issue! But I've been beating my head around this for a couple of days now. I'm trying figure out who to talk to, or which company I can approach to try to see if there are Grid/Cloud Computing companies who have programs setup to deal with colleges. I'm dealing with a compsci course, and we're looking at a few projects that would require a great deal of computing/computational resources. But in calling different companies (HP/Rackspace/etc..) I'm either not getting through to the right depts, or to the right people, or the companies just aren't setup for this. There are plenty of companies who have discounts for desktop software/hardware, but who in the biz deals with discounts/offerings for Cloud/Grid Computing solutions?? • How can I use a batch shortcut to open multiple Windows Explorer folders, and a Notepad file?

  I've recently built a computer with an SSD in it (my first) and am in the process of moving a select few of my Steam games to the SSD and symbolically linking them to where they're supposed to be on the main (mechanical) hard drive so that Steam doesn't throw a fit and I get maximum performance. To this end, I'm finding myself repeatedly navigating to both target folders to move the relevant files and opening a specific Notepad file to enter the relevant paths into a template I've got set up that I paste into the Windows command prompt to create the symlink. This is annoying. I've read up a little bit on batch shortcuts, and have a basic understanding on how to use one to open programs and files. However, I'm finding a lot of confusing suggestions on how to use batch shortcuts to open specific folders in Windows Explorer, and none of them deal with opening multiple folders at once. Any assistance on writing the shortcut would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your time.

• Server 2008 blue screen after login - no desktop

  I came into work today to find that our Windows Server 2008 used as a terminal server for the Thin Clients was not loading the users desktops. What I have found out is that when I login via Remote Desktop, after applying user settings, it gets to the stage of 'Preaparing your desktop', but then the screen just goes blue. I have tried rebooting several times with no luck, and logging in locally at the server with no luck. Does anyone have any suggestions? I do not think that it could be a virus attack as we run antivirus on the server with OpenDNS filtering. Yesterday a software restriction policy was set up to only allow programs in the following directories to run if that could be the problem, although it was working fine all day yesterday. • Visual Studio 2005 Open Project Dialog Slow as Molasses

  Hi, Whenever I try to open a project in Visual Studio 2005 (Windows XP), my open project dialog become slow as molasses - navigating down one level of folders typically takes almost 60 seconds. Finding the project and opening it can take up 4-5 minutes, which is just ridiculous. I've checked the open project dialogs of other programs - only VS2005 is acting this way. What could be causing this problem and how do I go about solving it (apart from reinstalling VS2005 / windows) (Edit: Even VS2008 on the same machine does not have this problem. I don't know what's wrong.) Thanks!

• Python installation in OSX not updating

  I've recently got into Python programming and so downloaded the latest version (3.2.3) to install on my Mac running Snow Leopard. I used the installer package. I have run the shell profile update script, but Terminal is still using 2.6.1 to run my programs. I have tried changing the paths with sudo nano as per this post but it makes no difference - it still uses 2.6.1 Any ideas, oh mighty Super Users? I am a complete noob when it comes to Terminal commands.

• Virtualizing WindowsXP on Linux Fedora 12 for Photoshop....

  I am running a Linux server from 2000, I have Fedora12 installed as the OS. I know you can virtualize Windows XP on the system to be able to run Windows programs, but the problem is I My server has only one 1333Mhz Pentium 3 processor and 1G of Ram. granted this is a pretty kick ass computer for the day, but lacking the second processor I'm afraid that I will not be able to run Windows virtualization to support Photoshop CS3. Is there any program out there that runs similar to Photoshop, like windows Digital Image suite 10, that will run smoothly in my Linux Fedora 12 environment? or can I virtualize windows and run the Windows digital image suite 10, without slowing or corrupting my system?

• Is there a "Run Level Configurator" for Windows XP?

  I have been having trouble with something causing my Windows XP system to take 6-8 minutes to startup from a cold boot. Something is happening during startup that is causing the system to crawl. I have a lot of Linux experience , especially configuring run levels so that some programs start before others do. I also know how to do that on Windows XP but its really complex, and with 50 services I'd have to keep a giant spreadsheet to keep it all organized. Is there such a thing as a Windows XP Tool that "emulates" the Linux run-level editors that I can use to control the order than services start on my system?
