• Ubuntu dual boot and grub error 18

  I've attempted to install 9.04 on an older toshiba laptop with a new 300GB drive and am getting the dreaded Grub error 18 that indicates that grub is looking beyond the bios readable area of the HD and failing. I just let ubuntu roll with its default selections when installing and ended up with this: Drive layout /dev/sda1 -ntfs 128GB -boot /dev/sda2 -extended 170GB -lba /dev/sda5 -ntfs 167.59GB /dev/sda6 -ext3 2.33GB /dev/sda7 -linux-swap 172MB I'd like make the system dual bootable without having to reinstall windows (real pain since I would have to go through an obstructionist IT dept). I know I can make windows bootable with a rescue disk and fixmbr but is there something I can do to make it dual bootable using the ubuntu livecd? Alternately, what should I have done at the partition stage of ubuntu installation to avoid this?

  I have 2 unique networks. They both share similar architecture: Windows 2003 SBS SP2 Running Symantec Endpoint Running Symantec Information Foundation Shared drives off a data partition Clients running Office 2003 or 2007 Connect to file server through mapped drives When users try to open a file from their local PC by double clicking, it will take 30-60 seconds to open. When they do File - Open, those same documents open up almost immediately. So far I've tried the following - CCleaner to parse the registry of outdated mapped drives - Disabled "using DDE" - Disabled A/V - Reboot Any ideas beyond that? Figured this question belongs here instead of SU since its the same issue on different networks.

• Multiple Selections from Dropdown in Word 2011 Form

  Anyone know if there is a way to setup a Word form to allow the user to select multiple items from a dropdown list that are then displayed? For example, I need to setup a form to identify applicability of specific procedures to various levels of our organization. Since the listing of all departments under all divisions can be pretty lengthy, I was hoping for the ability to check off a division and then have a dropdown list on the same line to select the applicable departments (so the selections are specific to that division and not all listed on the form if that division is not applicable). First, I'm not seeing how to create a dropdown that would allow multiple selections. Beyond that, I don't know if that form element alone would then display all selected items or if that would require another element of some type. Anyone have any suggestions on this? • Samba PDC plus universal folder

  I know how to configure samba on my ubuntu box to become a PDC however I need some select files to be accessible to multiple users. These files are beyond their personal files. I.E. users A-C need to be able to access a schedule saved as a spreadsheet. But user D does not and users B-D need to be able to access confidential employee info but user A does not. How do I set this up on top of the PDC structure? Any video tutorials would be a plus. Im new to linux so documentation is a confusing slow slog to learn. Thanks so much in advance!

• Terrible Performance with SATA Drives on Dell PowerEdge, steps to troubleshoot?

  I had asked this question earlier and the question went missing so here it is again. Bought a DELL Poweredge 2950 to use as in-house QA Server. Disk performance is beyond terrible, 1000-4000 ms response time on the drive with our SQL Server database .mdf. Sql Server disk queue upwards of 300 at times. I'm a software guy, can anyone help me with steps to determine the issue? I don't know what RAID controller it has, how can I determine that? I'm speculating it could be BIOS issue. Perhaps the server used to have another kind of drive in it and when I added SATA the ??? buffer size is wrong??? Perhaps I chose wrong options (chose defaults) when setting up the RAID 1 arrays? I thought RAID 1 was a performance array?

• Apache Tomcat 6.0.29 startup causing Win XP SP3 reboot

  Some of our Windows XP Developer machines die (black screen - no ping) when starting up Tomcat from a console. This only happens if the Tomcat debug console window is displayed (not minimised). When minimised, the startup / run is successful. I've checked for Tomcat logs and the crash sessions produce empty (zero bytes) tomcat log files. No system logs exist and no crash dump is created even though this is enabled in the Windows settings. The machine is dual screen and another machine with the same image has the same issue. The only clue is just before the crash, one of the monitors the system reports "Cannot display video mode 1280x1024" (approximate error, didn't write it down). Is there a way I can get Windows to produce log files of this crash session? Beyond running Tomcat as a service / minimised window, how can I fix (or even investigate)?

  I did a great deal of reading here before posting this because I didn't want to post a duplicate - but I'm on a bit of a deadline and getting frustrated, so here goes... I very, very, very sincerely apologize if this is long winded or hard to read. Please - please just ask for any information or clarification and I will give it as quickly as I possibly can. This has become very frustrating to me and this is the last place I know to turn. I have no experience with setting up DNS, no experience with nameservers, and no peers to go to for help. So this is kind of my last ditch effort. The task of setting up a private server has, through circumstances beyond my control, fallen into my lap. I own a domain (hereafter referred to as yyy.com) and have always used shared hosting - I buy a package and just point it to the domain nameservers they give me. It's always been simple. yyy.com is registered with network solutions Now I have purchased a Virtual Private Hosting package from GoDaddy.com - and it comes with Plesk 11. I have no earthly idea how to begin to get the right nameserver for yyy.com. I have gone through the instructions and have wound up exceedingly frustrated. I have 2 IP addresses from GoDaddy for the server. This is what I have so far, and I cannot tell if it is working (Since propogation takes so long, it is extremely hard to test for me) IP 1 : XX.XX.XX.XX IP 2 : YY.YY.YY.YY (obviously hidden for privacy) Now after going through the documentation setup and waiting a few days, this is the setup I have - and so far it does not appear to be working. • snmpd.conf network range not accepted

  I am using snmpd on CentOS 6.3 and was giving a network range to the source for mapping community to security group. com2sec mynetwork 192.168.0.0/23 centreon Anyhow it is not working and I always get a timeout from the polling server. When I enter the exact ip of the polling server it works (192.168.3.180) It even works if I enter the whole netmask (255.255.252.0) Anyhow it should work according to documentation. Did I do anything wrong?

Simply setting the article's Access Level to Restricted makes it disappear rather than prompting for a login. I can't figure out how to make a login page because I can't find any menu items or documentation pertaining to mod_login. I want to set at least one page to require login access. Where do I start?

  I've worked on shared Google Docs with family members, but don't really know how or whether Google prevents two users from modifying the same document at the same time .. and clobbering one another's work. How does Google Docs handle this .. is a document 'locked' whenever somebody opens it for revisions? I haven't been able to see an answer for this in their documentation/help.

• Hyper-V CPU Utilization, Good Tools?

  I just learned a ton from this post: Host CPU% doesn't include child VM CPU%, specifically I learned that both the 'host OS' and 'child VM' are siblings within the HyperVisor layer. Are there good utilities for 'watching' the total CPU and other resource counters at the HyperVisor (hardware) layer? I know perfmon (watching special Hyper-V CPU counters) is the standard answer, but I've stayed away from perfmon for ad-hoc monitoring. Is there a good OSS or free tools to 'watch' the resource utilization as I create multiple new VMs running on the server? I'm a developer, so if there aren't any good UI tools to surface this data I'd consider creating one, but only if needed. P.S. My specific scenario is I'm creating new web, SQL and back-end server VMs for new Windows 8 Server and SQL 2012 (entire application stack). I need to monitor them for utilization and know when I need to grow beyond 1 host (I'll need to split the VMs into separate hosts as I hit hardware limits of the 1st host, and diagnose problems).

• Is it possible to copy recordings off of a DVR box hard drive?

  My cable TV company gives me a Cisco Explorer 8640HDC DVR box that can record shows from TV. I know that it contains a hard drive to save the shows on. What format and file system are used to store the videos on the hard drive? I have looked at the documentation for this DVR box and there is no technical information about the manner in which recordings are stored. Is it possible to connect the hard drive to a computer and extract the recordings from it?

  My developer believes that s3fs is changing my bucket's permissions. Is this possible? I want my bucket to be public, but it keeps reverting back to private. Here's my fstab. s3fs#production /mnt/production fuse use_cache=/tmp,use_rrs=1,allow_other,uid=1000,gid=1000 0 0 My developer mentioned the "-o default_acl (default="private")" option. The documentation refers to "canned acl", but I don't understand what these are.

• How to block all multicast traffic travelling through a Cisco Catalyst 3750

  Something changed today. I can't seem to track down what, but one of our 3750s decided that it was going to forward all the multicast traffic it saw from the ghost server across every VLAN it has. I've tried writing a simple access group that consists of the following: access-list 100 deny ip any 224.0.0.10 0.0.0.255 access-list 100 permit ip any any I apparently mistakenly assumed that once applied to an interface that it would block all of the multicast traffic on that interface regardless of VLAN. I do not want any multicast traffic flowing through this particular switch to any VLAN or even to stay on the same VLAN beyond this switch. Does anyone have any ideas?

  In Apache2 documentation thay say that in <VirtualHost *:80>, the * can be replaced by IP or FQDN, but the FQDN is not recommended. Addr can be: The IP address of the virtual host; A fully qualified domain name for the IP address of the virtual host (not recommended); But why is it not recommended? If I have www.mydomain.com and webmail.mydomain.com pointing to the same IP address, why shouldn't I use the names here?

• Excel cutting out down over 1024 characters

  I am using Excel 2003 to save a large file as a CSV. But when saving cells that contain over 1024 characters, it cuts out the characters beyond 1024. Per a previous question, I am using this official macro to save: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;291296&Product=xlw This macro in question is probably causing it, since I'm not using the normal Save As (in order to put quotes around every field). It may not be 1024 characters, but long cells are getting cut off. What in this macro is causing that?

• My WD Caviar Green SATA HDD cannot be detected

  I have a WD 2TB Caviar Green SATA HDD. I used it as an external hard drive formatted to FAT32. The main purpose was to store my PS3 games. It worked fine and all of a sudden my PS3 stopped detecting it. I tried connecting it to my pc and the same result. I took it off from the enclosure and plugged it directly to my PC and used the BIOS setup. The BIOS setup detects my HDD but it says it's 0.0MB!!! I also tried the WD Data Lifeguard Diagnostic tool and it wasn't much of use because the drive is not picking up by windows at all. Is my HDD dead? Is it beyond repair?
