  • Run Rails server on client's local machine for single tenancy [on hold]

    We are building a Rails application for a client that wants to run the app locally to be close to their data center for best performance. I had assumed we would use a standard web host. What requirements should we demand of the client's infrastructure..all I can think of so far is remote access for developers and a Linux machine? We don't have server admin expertise so would need to contract this, I doubt the client has the expertise. Does this sound like a recipe for disastor?!

    Apple stated that the reason multitasking didn't arrive before iOS4 is because they hadn't figured out how to do it right. Jobs stated at Apple WWDC 2010 that they now do and that they solved the problem of preserving battery performance regarding multitasking. Is iOS4's multitasking "feature" indeed more efficient regarding battery performance compared to Android? Have the Android developers managed to "do it right" too?

  • Cannot drop a table in SQL 2005

    I have a SQL Server 2005 SP3 box that one of my developers created a temp table on that we cannot seem to remove because it somehow got brackets in the name of the table?   • When spliting MP4s with ffmpeg how do I include metadata?

    I have a few MP4s that i want to upload to my flickr account but they have a maximum size of 500mb as mine is only about 550 i was planing to simply split them in half then upload them, but i want to make sure all the meta data is included but it does not seem to be. Is there some sort of managed software solution that will centralize management of all my IIS6 environments provide some inventory functionality allow for reporting or querying of said application inventory enforce and automate some sort of deployment process?

  • Sharing VirtualBox snapshots

    Is it possible to "share" a VirtualBox snapshot? I have a "baseline" VirtualBox machine, and I would like to be able to take a snapshot, and send it to another user which has the same baseline machine. The scenario is that the baseline machine is used for testing, and I want to allow testers to create snapshots which describe a certain system state, and send that snapshot to developers to further examination. EDIT: To clarify, I would like to be able to export snapshots "incrementally" without having to export the entire machine as an appliance.

    We are interested in implementing RemoteApp on Windows 2008 R2 to serve out a few programs. Since the developers use shared memory to pass messages between processes, it is necessary that we provide them with a solution that will allow this. They have researched and discovered that if the applications exist in the same terminal server session that they will be able to access shared memory. Is there a way to absolutely ensure that multiple RemoteApps are running within the same session (with the same user) so that they can access the same shared memory?

    I am running a 6.5 version of Teamcity on a Debian Squeeze server and I use OpenLDAP to authenticate users. I know I can use LDAPS to be able to use encrypted password authentication, however this has been deprecated by the OpenLDAP developers, see: http://www.openldap.org/faq/data/cache/605.html I would like to know if there is a way to configure LDAP authentication in Teamcity to use StartTLS on port 389.     Why do they have different names for the same command, listing a directory? Surely, they could have talked to each other and agreed on one common name, such as for example cd which is the same for both unix and dos. This decision to have different names has created many headaches for developers and users and also increased incompatibility between the two systems. Did they do it on purpose? Then how come "cd" is the same?

    I want to stop some of our developers from connecting to the production sql server using a specific sql account. They have rights to connect through windows authentication with lower rights. They claim that changing the password will affect too many other processes running on our processing machine. So I want to deny access if they're connecting from there dev machines for now. Another way this would work is if I could just allow connections from one specific host.
