  • How to use Google Analytics to track a development and production versions of the same site on different servers?

    I have a website with two versions, one for production and one for development (testing new features). All of the code is under version control and the websites are on separate servers. Currently, I have the same Google Analytics Tracking code used on both sites. Since the code is under version control, it would be ideal to either have an if I am on production, use this code; else if on development server use that code clause. But I suspect that Google makes it easier to do something like this. I see that there are many ways to configure a GA tracking code, e.g. "a single domain" vs. "multiple top level domains". But it is not clear to me how to set this up. Also, if tracking code configured for a single domain has been on the development server, have I been picking up traffic to both sites, or does GA just ignore the second domain that I haven't registered?

I believe that the throughput from an employee depends on a lot of things such as the particular work assigned to them, other members of his/her team, other reasons etc. Such penalizations will be demoralizing to the people.   • Enterprise 2.0 Conference recap

    We had a great week in Boston attending the Enterprise 2.0 Conference. We learned a lot from industry thought leaders and had a chance to speak with a lot of different folks about social and collaboration technologies and trends.  Of all the conferences we attend, this one definitely has a different “feel”. It seems like the attendees are younger, they dress hipper, and there is much more livelihood all around. A few of the sessions addressed this, as the "millenials" or Generation Y, have been using Web 2.0 tools, such as Facebook and Twitter for many years now, and as they are entering the workforce they are expecting similar tools to be a part of how they accomplish their job tasks. It's important to note that it's not just Millenials that are expecting these technologies, as workers young and old alike benefit from social and collaboration tools. I’ve highlighted some of the takeaways I had, as well as a reaction from John Brunswick, who helped us in staffing the booth. Giving your employees choices is empowering, but if there is no course of action or plan, it’s useless. There is no such thing as collaboration without a goal. In a few years, social will become a feature in the “platform”, a component of collaboration. Social will become part of the norm – just like email is expected when you start a job at a company, Social will be too. 1 in 3 of your employees are using tools your company doesn't sanction (how scary is this?!) 25,000 pieces of content are created every second. Context is king. Social tools help us navigate and manage the complexities we face with information overload. We need to design products for the way people work. Consumerization of the enterprise - bringing social tools like Facebook to the organization. From John Brunswick: "The conference had solid attendance, standing as a testament to organizations making a concerted effort to understand what social tools exist to support their businesses.  Many vendors were narrowly focused and people we pleasantly surprised at the breadth of capability provided by Oracle WebCenter.  People seemed to feel that it just made sense that social technology provides the most benefit when presented in the context of key business data."   • USB Bose speakers with ubuntu 12.04

    On a fresh install of ubuntu 12.04 my Bose USB weren't working at all. I read through a large number of posts here and elsewehre on Bose or USB speakers. I tried many things (modifying a number of different files, etc.). This worked... sort of: USB Audio on 0 volume on startup The AlsaMixer works after I turn up the volume, but the sound crackles a lot. Also, having to use a term mixer to change sound isn't ideal. Any other ideas? Thank you, Richard

  • Wireless acting weird ubuntu 12.04 LTS

    I'm kinda new here, so please bear with me. My wireless driver is acting very weird. It shows my router's name, but when it is connecting (after entering the correct password), the icon on the tray is like, refreshing every once in a second, while showing the animation that it is connecting. And after a few seconds, error message come up saying that wireless network is disconnected. I installed the drive through "additional drivers". What info do you need?   • Access local email stored on worstation on laptop on lan

    I have the following scenario with my email : I am using Evolution as my primary email client on my workstation. The evolution mail is downloaded from my mail servers using POP, then deleted from the server. When I am mobile, I access my email on my email server using webmail. My laptop is my primary computer thesedays. The workstation is hardly used. When I am mobile, I am restricted to new email that has not been downloaded onto the workstation I am now looking for a way to access my email from my workstation on my laptop, amlost as if my workstation is my second level email server/ I tried evolution on X display but attachments will browse on my workstation (not ideal as most docs are on my laptop). I am open to changing mail client or installing a service on my workstation. What would be the best way to address this requirement?

     IDG News Service - Oracle CEO Larry Ellison said Oracle will continue to bet on selling high-end custom hardware for its software products, even amidst a growing trend toward roomfuls of cheap, generic servers. "You have to be in the hardware business and the software business, to get the best possible system," he said during a keynote speech at Oracle's OpenWorld conference in Tokyo. "We believe it's the right idea, we believe it's the next generation of computing, we believe all the pieces have to fit together." Ellison, as he has often done in the past, repeatedly referred to Apple as his "favorite example" of such tight integration. He was a close friend of Apple's co-founder Steve Jobs and previously served on Apple's board of directors.He said sales of Oracle's advanced servers were booming and generating around a billion dollars a year in revenue for the company, which has until recent years focused almost exclusively on its software offerings. With the explosion of popular online services and the increasing number of mobile devices that access them, demand is high for databases that can quickly respond to high numbers of relatively simple queries. While Oracle is pitching its expensive, finely-tuned machines to meet this requirement, Internet behemoths like Google, Facebook and Microsoft increasingly rely on armies of low-cost, easily replaceable servers. Ellison emphasized the high specifications of Oracle's servers, which come packed with multiple terabytes of RAM and flash-based storage for speed. Such machines are superior to large server farms, he said, because they require far less electricity and floor space, and are also cost competitive. When asked about whether purchasing such products would lock customers in to expensive hardware from Oracle, he promised that the company's software would always run on "multiple hardware sources."  Ellison, who spoke from Kyoto, Japan's ancient capital, was shown live online via webcast.   • Cool examples of procedural pixel shader effects?

    What are some good examples of procedural/screen-space pixel shader effects? No code necessary; just looking for inspiration. In particular, I'm looking for effects that are not dependent on geometry or the rest of the scene (would look okay rendered alone on a quad) and are not image processing (don't require a "base image", though they can incorporate textures). Multi-pass or single-pass is fine. Screenshots or videos would be ideal, but ideas work too. Here are a few examples of what I'm looking for (all from the RenderMonkey samples): PS - I'm aware of this question; I'm not asking for a source of actual shader implementations but instead for some inspirational ideas -- and the ones at the NVIDIA Shader Library mostly require a scene or are image processing effects.   • Is there a way to disallow only crawling in https in robots.txt?

    I just realized that Bingbot is crawling my company's website's pages over https. Bing already crawls the site over http, so this seems frivolous. Is there a way to specify Disallow: / for https only? According to Wikipedia, each protocol has its own robots.txt And according to Google's Robots.txt Specification, the robots.txt applies to http AND https I don't want to Disallow: / for Bing totally, just over https.

How would I set up an anonymous email forwarder, so I can give them a valid email address, and kill that email address if the company turns into an evil spammer? Note that to be effective, it would have to filter out any email addresses listed in the body of the forwarded email (otherwise those email addresses will end up on their spam list too).

  • Ubuntu 12 installation problem

    I have made about 30 copies of the Ubuntu installation CD, but there is no way to install it on my laptop. I get a black screen with a blinking cursor or I get a /casper/vmlinuz file not found or I get Invalid or corrupt kernel image. I tried all solutions that I found but no way to install ubuntu on this laptop. I tried both 32 bit and 64 bit versions, I tried ubuntu 11, and no way to install it. Only If I install windows first and than can I install it with wubi. But that is not an ideal solution. That is linux installed on windows. If I install any other distributions of linux the installation works ok. So there must be some issue with ubuntu!
