• World Record Siebel PSPP Benchmark on SPARC T4 Servers

  Oracle's SPARC T4 servers set a new World Record for Oracle's Siebel Platform Sizing and Performance Program (PSPP) benchmark suite. The result used Oracle's Siebel Customer Relationship Management (CRM) Industry Applications Release 8.1.1.4 and Oracle Database 11g Release 2 running Oracle Solaris on three SPARC T4-2 and two SPARC T4-1 servers. • Can an internally developed fast evolving, agile, short sprint web application lend itself to offshoring?

  I have recently been set a target to achieve readiness to successfully manage and deliver results through the usage of offshore teams on our mainline development project within 12 months. Our mainline is a multi-thousand user highly available web application, and various related SAAS components delivered through the above mentioned web application. We work agile on the mainline with a rapid 1 week sprint using continuous integration. Our delivery platform is a bespoke php framework, although we have some .net services and components in the mix. My view is: an offshore team could work if we either ship out an entire isolated project for offshore development, or we specify a component for our system in huge detail up front. But we don't currently work like that, and it will conflict with the in-house method, and unless the off-shore is working within our team, with our development/deployment chain it could be an integration nightmare. So my question is, given we have a closed source bespoke framework (Private IP) which we train our developers to use, and we work agile minimising documentation, maximising communication and responding to rapidly changing requirements, and much of the quality control is via team skills building and peer review, how can I make off-shoring work on our main line development?

• A font like RomanS in appearance but with support for more characters (Autocad)?

  In a Autocad 2010 installation, the standard font used is RomanS. That font is so limited on characters, so when I use "text" command I cannot add "³" on text of cubic meters measures (a "?" is displayed instead of the "³" character - see isolated text on figure below and Font characters Latin Supplement range). When I use a dimension command, like multileader, Autocad "corrects" that issue using another font that support that missing character, resulting on an awful mixture (see text on multileader below - on multileader text properties, we can see 3m{\fArial|b0|i0|c0|p34;³}). I can easily change that font with another, like Verdana, Times New Roman... that have more characters than RomanS font, but I would like to use an alternative font more like RomanS in appearance. Any help?

• Using PreApplicationStartMethod for ASP.NET 4.0 Application to Initialize assemblies

  Sometimes your ASP.NET application needs to hook up some code before even the Application is started. Assemblies supports a custom attribute called PreApplicationStartMethod which can be applied to any assembly that should be loaded to your ASP.NET application, and the ASP.NET engine will call the method you specify within it before actually running any of code defined in the application. Lets discuss how to use it using Steps : 1. Add an assembly to an application and add this custom attribute to the AssemblyInfo.cs. Remember, the method you speicify for initialize should be public static void method without any argument. Lets define a method Initialize. You need to write : [assembly:PreApplicationStartMethod(typeof(MyInitializer.InitializeType), "InitializeApp")] 2. After you define this to an assembly you need to add some code inside InitializeType.InitializeApp method within the assembly. public static class InitializeType {     public static void InitializeApp()     {           // Initialize application     } } 3. You must reference this class library so that when the application starts and ASP.NET starts loading the dependent assemblies, it will call the method InitializeApp automatically. Warning Even though you can use this attribute easily, you should be aware that you can define these kind of method in all of your assemblies that you reference, but there is no guarantee in what order each of the method to be called. Hence it is recommended to define this method to be isolated and without side effect of other dependent assemblies. The method InitializeApp will be called way before the Application_start event or even before the App_code is compiled. • Fake links cause crawl error in Google Webmaster Tools

  Google reported Crawl Errors last week on my largest site though Webmaster Tools. Here is the message: Google detected a significant increase in the number of URLs that return a 404 (Page Not Found) error. Investigating these errors and fixing them where appropriate ensures that Google can successfully crawl your site's pages. The Crawl Errors list is now full of hundreds of fake links like these causing 16,519 errors so far: Note that my site does not even have a search.html and is not related to any of the terms shown in the above image. Inspecting sources for one of those links, I can see this is not simply an isolated source but a concerted effort: Each of the links has a few to a dozen sources all from different, seemingly unrelated sites. It is completely baffling as to why would someone to spending effort doing this. What are they hoping to achieve? Is this an attack? Most importantly: Does this have a negative effect on my side? Could it negatively impact my ranking? If so, what to do about it? The few linking pages I looked at are full of thousands of links to tons of sites and have no contact information and do not seem like the kind of people who would simply stop if asked nicely! According to Google Webmaster Tools, these errors have appeared in a span of 11 days. No crawl errors were being reported previously.

• Where is the network connection enabled/disabled setting stored?

  I have an Amazon EC2 instance of Windows Server 2008 where some genius managed to disable the network connection so that the instance is now isolated in its own little universe. I can shut down the instance and edit the "C:\" drive volume by attaching it to another running instance. This is equivalent to removing the system drive from a dead machine and attaching it to another computer to edit the files. Question: Where is the network connection enabled / disabled setting stored? If I can tweak this setting by editing the registry or a file to re-enable the network connection, I can then resurrect my Amazon server.

• Should I use mod_wsgi embedded mode if I have full control of Apache?

  I'm managing a bunch of sites and applications in a shared hosting, using Django via mod_wsgi. I had planned to use daemon mode from the beginning (to avoid restart problems), but ended up purchasing a plan that allows me to run a dedicated Apache instance. I kept using daemon mode for convenience, but I'm afraid it's consuming more server resources than it should (I have different projects for each site, each with its own process and process group), so I'm considering switching to embedded mode. Would that be a sensible thing to do? I'd still be able to restart Apache anytime I need to, and I wouldn't need so many child processes and sockets (so I hope the resource usage would decrease). But I'm unsure whether or not doing so would make it more difficult to manage those sites (if I need to update one, I have to restart all) or maybe the applications won't be properly isolated from one another. Are these problems really significant (or only a minor nuisance), are there other drawbacks I coudn't foresee? I'm looking for advice in any aspect of this setup - mainainability, performance, security etc. Tips for improving the current setup are also welcome (I know how to correctly configure a basic mod_wsgi setup, but I'm clueless about sensible values for threads, processes etc).

• How can I disable recent documents in Unity?

  How do I disable the tracking and display of recently opened files (and whatever else is remembered) in a default installation of Ubuntu 11.10? (Note that this is not a duplicate of How can I keep recent files from appearing in Unity?, since that question and its answers are concerned with temporary and specific filtering. I want to disable it completely for a single user account.) Okay, to deflect the inevitable and expand on my motivation... While trawling the usual forums and Google results for a solution, it (unsurprisingly) seems that the near-universal use cases for this request are either browsing porn or Warhammer research. And the obvious solution to this is to create another user account to contain all evidence. However, this is not why I'm asking, and I don't say that to get all high and mighty about it, it's because this answer won't help. (Even though I really don't have any interest in Warhammer, and I have no idea how that paint pot and brush ended up in my drawer, no that's not glue on my thumb, etc.) My actual use case is that I use my personal laptop for presentations in different circles of my life. I have a user account set up with all the settings I like for presentations (shortcuts, small launcher, default associations, etc). But I don't want an accidental keystroke (or the find dialog) to display other recent presentations I've given, or the files I used in composing the presentation, or whatever. I also don't want to have to recreate this profile for every single presentation I might give. I just want a nice little isolated, memoryless, clean corner of my notebook for public display.

• Moving StarterSTS to the (Azure) Cloud

  Quite some people asked me about an Azure version of StarterSTS. While I kinda knew what I had to do to make the move, I couldn’t find the time. Until recently. This blog post briefly documents the necessary changes and design decisions for the next version of StarterSTS which will work both on-premise and on Azure. Provider Fortunately StarterSTS is already based on the idea of “providers”. Authentication, roles and claims generation is based on the standard ASP.NET provider infrastructure. This makes the migration to different data stores less painful. In my case I simply moved the ASP.NET provider database to SQL Azure and still use the standard SQL Server based membership, roles and profile provider. In addition StarterSTS has its own providers to abstract resource access for certificates, relying party registration, client certificate registration and delegation. So I only had to provide new implementations. Signing and SSL keys now go in the Azure certificate store and user mappings (client certificates and delegation settings) have been moved to Azure table storage. The one thing I didn’t anticipate when I originally wrote StarterSTS was the need to also encapsulate configuration. Currently configuration is “locked” to the standard .NET configuration system. The new version will have a pluggable SettingsProvider with versions for .NET configuration as well as Azure service configuration. If you want to externalize these settings into e.g. a database, it is now just a matter of supplying a corresponding provider. Moving between the on-premise and Azure version will be just a matter of using different providers. URL Handling Another thing that’s substantially different on Azure (and load balanced scenarios in general) is the handling of URLs. In farm scenarios, the standard APIs like ASP.NET’s Request.Url return the current (internal) machine name, but you typically need the address of the external facing load balancer. There’s a hotfix for WCF 3.5 (included in v4) that fixes this for WCF metadata. This was accomplished by using the HTTP Host header to generate URLs instead of the local machine name. I now use the same approach for generating WS-Federation metadata as well as information card files. New Features I introduced a cache provider. Since we now have slightly more expensive lookups (e.g. relying party data from table storage), it makes sense to cache certain data in the front end. The default implementation uses the ASP.NET web cache and can be easily extended to use products like memcached or AppFabric Caching. Starting with the relying party provider, I now also provide a read/write interface. This allows building management interfaces on top of this provider. I also include a (very) simple web page that allows working with the relying party provider data. I guess I will use the same approach for other providers in the future as well. I am also doing some work on the tracing and health monitoring area. Especially important for the Azure version. Stay tuned.

  The Growing Importance of Network Virtualization We often focus on server virtualization when we discuss cloud computing, but just as often we neglect to consider some of the critical implications of that technology. The ability to create virtual environments (or VEs [1]) means that we can create, destroy, activate and deactivate, and more importantly, MOVE them around within the cloud infrastructure. This elasticity and mobility has profound implications for how network services are defined, managed, and used to provide cloud services. It's not just servers that benefit from virtualization, it's the network as well. Network virtualization is becoming a hot topic, and not just for discussion but for companies like Oracle and others who have recently acquired net virtualization companies [2,3]. But even before this topic became so prominent, Solaris engineers were working on technologies in Solaris 11 to virtualize network services, known as Project Crossbow [4]. And why is network virtualization so important? Because old assumptions about network devices, topology, and management must be re-examined in light of the self-service, elasticity, and resource sharing requirements of cloud computing infrastructures. Static, hierarchical network designs, and inter-system traffic flows, need to be reconsidered and quite likely re-architected to take advantage of new features like virtual NICs and switches, bandwidth control, load balancing, and traffic isolation. For example, traditional multi-tier Web services (Web server, App server, DB server) that share net traffic over Ethernet wires can now be virtualized and hosted on shared-resource systems that communicate within a larger server at system bus speeds, increasing performance and reducing wired network traffic. And virtualized traffic flows can be monitored and adjusted as needed to optimize network performance for dynamically changing cloud workloads. Additionally, as VEs come and go and move around in the cloud, static network configuration methods cannot easily accommodate the routing and addressing flexibility that VE mobility implies; virtualizing the network itself is a requirement. Oracle Solaris 11 [5] includes key network virtualization technologies needed to implement cloud computing infrastructures. It includes features for the creation and management of virtual NICs and switches, and for the allocation and control of the traffic flows among VEs [6]. Additionally it allows for both sharing and dedication of hardware components to network tasks, such as allocating specific CPUs and vNICs to VEs, and even protocol-specific management of traffic. So, have a look at your current network topology and management practices in view of evolving cloud computing technologies. And don't simply duplicate the physical architecture of servers and connections in a virtualized environment…rethink the traffic flows among VEs and how they can be optimized using Oracle Solaris 11 and other Oracle products and services. [1] I use the term "virtual environment" or VE here instead of the more commonly used "virtual machine" or VM, because not all virtualized operating system environments are full OS kernels under the control of a hypervisor…in other words, not all VEs are VMs. In particular, VEs include Oracle Solaris zones, as well as SPARC VMs (previously called LDoms), and x86-based Solaris and Linux VMs running under hypervisors such as OEL, Xen, KVM, or VMware. • SharePoint Returning a 401.1 for a Specific User/Computer

  We have a SharePoint Services 3.0 site set up supporting about 300 users right now. This report is isolated and has never been duplicated. We have one AD user who cannot log into the SharePoint site with his account from his machine and is subsequently returned a 401.1 error. If any other user tries to log on with their account from his machine, it works okay. If he moves to another machine and logs on, it works okay. The only solution to this point has been to install FireFox on the machine. When he authenticates with FF, everything is okay. Remedies tried so far: Cleared cookies/cache Turned off/on Integrated Windows Authentication in IE Downgraded IE 8 to IE 6 Removed site from Intranet Sites zone Renamed the machine Disjoined/Rejoined Domain

• Can I use the Airport Express as a an uplink between two networks?

  I have two separate networks using different IP ranges, 192.168.0.* for the wired only, isolated network and 192.160.1.* for the wireless only network which is connected to the internet. The wired network has a network printer setup and working and I want to be able to share it out to members of the wireless network (see diagram below). In short I need some kind of uplink between the two networks. Currently running a cable is out since there is no suitable route. I have a spare Airport Express and I am wondering if I could attach it to the wired network and have it join the wireless and act as the uplink between the two. Anyone know if the device is capable of this?

• Yahoo toolbar and local sites (e.g. Intranet)

  We have local sites running on IIS in regular MS Windows network. User base has IE, FireFox and Chrome. Local sites are isolated by host headers and DNS record created for the common IP accordingly. This is a regular set-up. Users without Yahoo Toolbar type http://intranet and the sites resolves. Users with Yahoo toolbar type http://intranet and the toolbar goes off to search for this site in public domain. This is irrespective to whether the address is typed into the browser address bar or the toolbar. All versions of toolbar and IE are affected. I cannot see a setting on the toolbar to switch this "irritating" behaviour off and simply un-installing the toolbar is not an option. Any ideas?

• Have two exchange servers to communicate together

  We have Exchange Server 2007 using our domain ddd.com. We created an isolated network with a firewall/gateway and installed a DC and Exchange Server 2010 using a demo/test domain (ddd.loc). We opened all the needed ports in the firewall (10.10.2.88) to the Exchange Server 2010. In our main Domain Controller (10.10.2.3) we defined the domain ddd.loc with IP 10.10.2.88 (firewalls). We also we defined MX records to the same IP (10.10.2.88) We did that so when we send email from my email [email protected] it will go to the Exchange Server 2010. Anyways, all the pings test from to any servers are OK. But we are not able to send or receive emails. Between these Exchange Servers we can not send any email from the 2010 to any email in general (emails are pending). Also, in Exchange 2007 we are getting error #550 5.1.1 RESOLVER.ADR.RecipNotFound; not found ##

  MVVM Light has Messaging that helps keep View Models decoupled, isolated, and keep the separation of concerns, while allowing them to communicate with each other. This is a very helpful feature. One View Model can send off a message and if anyone is listening for it, they will react, otherwise nothing will happen. I now want to do the same with KnockoutJs View Models. • How do I start Chrome using a specified "user profile"?

  I use the new built-in "Users" feature of Chrome to switch between Home/Work accounts easily. However, Chrome remembers the "last" user profile you had selected when launching new windows. This is a problem if I close down my "Home" profile last, because when I then click the Email shortcut on my taskbar, because it goes to mail.mycompany.com using my Home profile, and I'm not logged in. I'd like to change the shortcut to the company webmail to pass a switch that tells Chrome to always start as the "Default" user, regardless of the last one used. Note: I have tried user-data-dir, and this seems to do something very different, completely isolated from the Users functionality built in to Chrome. It's possible I'm using it wrong, but please test this before assuming it does the same thing and posting an answer ;-)

On the Android phone it only takes up a bit of the screen. • bad switchs duplicate my ip

  I had a large area LAN. There were many switch and AP on it, then somehow I couldn't ping my servers, and it's said that the IP was duplicated. I use arpwatch and found out that one of the switch flip-flop-ing the IP. I isolated that troublesome switch using his mac-address. But, since this a large area LAN... I doubt this will be the last cases. If there any software or hardware that I can use to prevent this kind of error? Sorry for my bad English.

Pull Request Conversations Previously, the only way for project members and users who submitted pull requests to converse was via e-mail. This complicated the review process and made conversations isolated and difficult to track. For this release, we’ve added functionality that enables you to have those same conversations within the pull request page. When you view a pull request, you’ll now see “Comments” and “Changes” tabs, with current comments displayed. Inline Diff Enhancements We tweaked the inline diff experience to make it easier to traverse diff blocks. When you open up the inline diff experience, you’ll now see up and down arrows. To move between the diff blocks, you can use those arrows or utilize the available keyboard shortcuts. Lastly, we have also brought the inline diff experience to the source control changes page for project and fork changesets. • Crossplatform "jail" for an application

  We currently have a variety of systems (Linux, Solarix, *BSD, HP-UX ...) on which we are not allowed to install anything into / (but I have root access. That's strange, I know). But we'd like to run Puppet on all of them. So, the obvious idea is to install Puppet with all prebuilt dependencies into some isolated tree, something like "jail", which will allow to use dependences from some prefix and to access the host system. The big advatanges would be uniform deployment and updates. One solution that came to my mind is to deploy Gentoo Prefix, and install Puppet there with package manager. However, this requires a lot of extra space and some manual patching for each system. Maybe there are some more elegant and simple solutions?

• When RDP as a Domain User, Smart Card Requested

  My W8 machine is connected to domain zen. If I rdp to the W8 machine, I can log in as a local user without problems. If I try to log in as a domain user, I am prompted for a smart card instead of a password. Any ideas why? Note that Interactive login: require smart card is disabled in group policy: And here is the output from rsop.msc: Some additional information on this one. If my connecting machine is on the same domain/network as the W8 machine, then I am prompted for a password as usual. If the machine is remote, on a different domain, then I am prompted for a smart card. In addition, the machine I am connecting from that gets the smartcard prompt is an XP box. I haven't isolated exactly which of these factors triggers the different response.

• How can I easily confirm in Linux that two separate directories have the exact same contents?

  CentOS 5.x Mq question seemed similar to this one but I wasn't sure... I have two servers (completely isolated from each other), each with a directory and sub-directories that should have the same exact contents. For example the directory layout could be something like: SERVER A - /opt/foo/foob/1092380298309128301283/123.txt /opt/foo/foob/5094380298309128301283/456.txt /opt/foo/foob/5092380298309128301283/789.txt /opt/foo/foob/1592380298309128301283/abc.txt SERVER B - /opt/foo/foob/1092380298309128301283/123.txt /opt/foo/foob/5094380298309128301283/456.txt /opt/foo/foob/5092380298309128301283/789.txt /opt/foo/foob/1592380298309128301283/abc.txt Ideally I'd like a way to do a recursive check and have something confirm that everything matches. I also want to avoid using any third-party tools. Any ideas?

• Documents stored on separate internal drive, Ubuntu doesn't notice on startup

  My machine has Windows 7 Ultimate x64 and Ubuntu 12.04 LTS running side-by-side on a single hard drive with GRUB bootloader, each with 500 GB storage. I keep my personal documents on a separate 1TB hard drive so they remain isolated from any changes I make to the OS drive, but when Ubuntu starts it does not seem to notice my documents drive. While I've installed and worked with Ubuntu 12.04 Server x32 before, using it as a desktop OS is new to me. I use my documents drive for all of my personal data, including wallpapers and music, so it is imperative that Ubuntu recognize it on startup. Concerning the two specific examples: Ubuntu loads with the default blue-colored desktop instead of my desired picture of the spectacular Carina galaxy. When I right-click the desktop and select "Change Desktop Background", it wakes up from its amnesia and loads the proper background. As for my music, Rhythmbox defaults to an empty library upon reboot, forcing me to reload the settings manually each time. This gets quite tedious because I certainly can't work to my full potential without my music. The second thing I would like to address is making Ubuntu point the documents directories in ~ to their appropriate counterparts on the 1TB documents drive. I realize that this question is not new, but when I create the symbolical links, they established themselves inside the directories and did not convert the directories themselves into symbolical links. I also prefer not to move the files themselves from their current location on the 1TB drive. I believe this would also help the Rhythmbox library problem as well considering it's a default directory for the music player.
