  • "set shiftround" doesn't work in Vim?

    - by Ory Band
Hi. I'm using MacVim, and when trying to set shiftround in my .vimrc I get the following error: E518: Unknown option:  shiftround EDIT: However, when I try to :set shiftround manually within Vim, it works and gives no errors. Anybody knows what is causing this? If somebody wants to view my whole .vimrc (perhaps something else I'm not of is the cause of this), please do: https://github.com/oryband/dotvim/blob/master/vimrc

    - by user163457
Hi, I have a page on the example.com domain which contains an IFrame, this IFrame loads an ASP.NET page (c#) from the example2.com domain. From the code behind on the example2.com domain how can I get the URL of the master page? Would it help if the 2 pages were on the same domain, so example.com contains an iframe with sub.example.com? Thanks

  • OpenBSD configuration: Client unable to mount via NFS using Berkeley Automounter (amd)

    - by Rilindo
What I am trying to do is to have my openBSD client (OpenBSD 4.9) auto mount a Linux NFS file system (Scientific Linux 6.1). So far, I am not sure if it is configured correctly. To get things out of the way, I am able to mount nfs manually: # mount_nfs -T -3 192.168.15.100:/exports /mnt # ls -la /mnt total 52 drwxr-xr-x 7 root wheel 4096 Oct 4 22:42 . drwxr-xr-x 16 root wheel 512 Nov 26 16:33 .. drwxrwxr-x 5 _sndio _sndio 4096 Oct 31 21:58 centos drwxr-xr-x 15 root wheel 4096 Nov 6 09:17 home drwxr-xr-x 5 root wheel 4096 Oct 31 21:27 sl drwxr-xr-x 3 root wheel 4096 Nov 19 16:02 sles drwxr-xr-x 17 503 503 4096 Nov 10 17:37 users # So connectivity is not an issue, as far as I can tell. As per man page, the following is configured in /etc/amd/auto.home: /defaults type:=nfs;sublink:=${key};opts:=rw,soft,intr,vers=3,proto=tcp * rhost:=192.168.15.100;rfs:=/exports In turn, /etc/amd/master is configured as such: # cat /etc/amd/master /exports amd.home Upon reboot, I can it see mount, but curiously enough, instead of the hostname: amd:24490 0 0 0 100% /exports From what I understand, amd acts a little different from FreeBSD. Still, I tried to see if I it can automount. Nope: ksh: cd: /exports/users - Resource temporarily unavailable # cd /exports/192.168.15.100/host/users ksh: cd: /exports/192.168.15.100/host/users - Resource temporarily unavailable A search in google doesn't help too much - it seems that automounting NFS with OpenBSD is not something that is usually done. Other than this, information is fairly sparse. I can, of course, always mount is permanently, but I tend to be a bit anal on convention, so no for now. :) Some direction would be appreciation. (And oh, in case you are a wondering, I tried FreeBSD way of using amd and that hasn't worked out - although I wouldn't mind an explanation of the difference between how FreeBSD implements and how OpenBSD implements it) UPDATE: After re-writing the map file several times, I got as far as actually communicating with the NFS server with this configuration: /defaults type:=nfs;rhost:=kerberos.monzell.com;rfs:=/exports;\ sublink:=${key};opts:=rw,nodev, nosuid, soft, intr, tcp, resvport * ${host}==${rhost};type:=nfs;fs:=${rfs};opts:=rw,nodev, nosuid, soft, intr, tcp, resvport However, for some reason, it seems that amd will only default to NFS version 2 over udp: # tcpdump dst kerberos tcpdump: listening on pcn0, link-type EN10MB tcpdump: WARNING: compensating for unaligned libpcap packets 20:38:28.558385 openbsd.monzell.com.856 > kerberos.monzell.com.sunrpc: udp 100 20:38:28.559154 openbsd.monzell.com.856 > kerberos.monzell.com.892: udp 96 20:38:30.592761 openbsd.monzell.com.856 > kerberos.monzell.com.nfsd: xid 0x22000000 (NFSv2) 40 null 20:38:33.558107 arp reply openbsd.monzell.com is-at 52:54:00:52:8f:66 I tried various options of forcing it to try to mount as nfsv3 such as: /defaults type:=nfs;rhost:=kerberos.monzell.com;rfs:=/exports;\ sublink:=${key};opts:=rw,nodev,nosuid,soft,intr,vers=3,proto=tcp,resvport * ${host}==${rhost};type:=nfs;fs:=${rfs};opts:=rw,nodev,nosuid,soft,intr,vers=3,proto=tcp,resvport or: /defaults type:=nfs;rhost:=kerberos.monzell.com;rfs:=/exports;\ sublink:=${key};opts:=rw,nodev,nosuid,soft,intr,vers=-3,proto=tcp,resvport * ${host}==${rhost};type:=nfs;fs:=${rfs};opts:=rw,nodev,nosuid,soft,intr,vers=3,proto=tcp,resvport Nothing yet still. Curious enough, OpenBSD mounts defaults to version 3, so I am not sure why it would start with version in amd. What would be the correct options to pass?

  • Diagnosing packet loss / high latency in Ubuntu

    - by Sam Gammon
We have a Linux box (Ubuntu 12.04) running Nginx (1.5.2), which acts as a reverse proxy/load balancer to some Tornado and Apache hosts. The upstream servers are physically and logically close (same DC, sometimes same-rack) and show sub-millisecond latency between them: PING appserver (10.xx.xx.112) 56(84) bytes of data. 64 bytes from appserver (10.xx.xx.112): icmp_req=1 ttl=64 time=0.180 ms 64 bytes from appserver (10.xx.xx.112): icmp_req=2 ttl=64 time=0.165 ms 64 bytes from appserver (10.xx.xx.112): icmp_req=3 ttl=64 time=0.153 ms We receive a sustained load of about 500 requests per second, and are currently seeing regular packet loss / latency spikes from the Internet, even from basic pings: sam@AM-KEEN ~> ping -c 1000 loadbalancer PING 50.xx.xx.16 (50.xx.xx.16): 56 data bytes 64 bytes from loadbalancer: icmp_seq=0 ttl=56 time=11.624 ms 64 bytes from loadbalancer: icmp_seq=1 ttl=56 time=10.494 ms ... many packets later ... Request timeout for icmp_seq 2 64 bytes from loadbalancer: icmp_seq=2 ttl=56 time=1536.516 ms 64 bytes from loadbalancer: icmp_seq=3 ttl=56 time=536.907 ms 64 bytes from loadbalancer: icmp_seq=4 ttl=56 time=9.389 ms ... many packets later ... Request timeout for icmp_seq 919 64 bytes from loadbalancer: icmp_seq=918 ttl=56 time=2932.571 ms 64 bytes from loadbalancer: icmp_seq=919 ttl=56 time=1932.174 ms 64 bytes from loadbalancer: icmp_seq=920 ttl=56 time=932.018 ms 64 bytes from loadbalancer: icmp_seq=921 ttl=56 time=6.157 ms --- 50.xx.xx.16 ping statistics --- 1000 packets transmitted, 997 packets received, 0.3% packet loss round-trip min/avg/max/stddev = 5.119/52.712/2932.571/224.629 ms The pattern is always the same: things operate fine for a while (<20ms), then a ping drops completely, then three or four high-latency pings (1000ms), then it settles down again. Traffic comes in through a bonded public interface (we will call it bond0) configured as such: bond0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:xx:xx:xx:xx:5d inet addr:50.xx.xx.16 Bcast:50.xx.xx.31 Mask:255.255.255.224 inet6 addr: <ipv6 address> Scope:Global inet6 addr: <ipv6 address> Scope:Link UP BROADCAST RUNNING MASTER MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1 RX packets:527181270 errors:1 dropped:4 overruns:0 frame:1 TX packets:413335045 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0 collisions:0 txqueuelen:0 RX bytes:240016223540 (240.0 GB) TX bytes:104301759647 (104.3 GB) Requests are then submitted via HTTP to upstream servers on the private network (we can call it bond1), which is configured like so: bond1 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:xx:xx:xx:xx:5c inet addr:10.xx.xx.70 Bcast:10.xx.xx.127 Mask:255.255.255.192 inet6 addr: <ipv6 address> Scope:Link UP BROADCAST RUNNING MASTER MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1 RX packets:430293342 errors:1 dropped:2 overruns:0 frame:1 TX packets:466983986 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0 collisions:0 txqueuelen:0 RX bytes:77714410892 (77.7 GB) TX bytes:227349392334 (227.3 GB) Output of uname -a: Linux <hostname> 3.5.0-42-generic #65~precise1-Ubuntu SMP Wed Oct 2 20:57:18 UTC 2013 x86_64 GNU/Linux We have customized sysctl.conf in an attempt to fix the problem, with no success. • Postfix on Snow Leopard unable to send MIME emails, including header contents in message body

    - by devvy
I configured postfix on snow leopard by adding the following line to /etc/hostconfig: MAILSERVER=-YES- I then configured postfix to relay through my ISP's SMTP server. I added the following two lines in their respective places within /etc/postfix/main.cf: myhostname = 1and1.com relayhost = shawmail.vc.shawcable.net I then have a simple PHP mail function wrapper as follows: send_email("[email protected]", "[email protected]", "Test Email", "<p>This is a simple HTML email</p>"); echo "Done"; function send_email($from,$to,$subject,$message){ $header="From: <".$from."> "; $header.= 'MIME-Version: 1.0' . " "; $header.= 'Content-type: text/html; charset=iso-8859-1' . " "; $send_mail=mail($to,$subject,$message,$header); if(!$send_mail){ echo "ERROR"; } } With this, I am receiving an e-mail that appears to be improperly formatted. The message header is showing up in the body of the e-mail. • Courier Maildrop error user unknown. Command output: Invalid user specified

    - by cad
Hello I have a problem with maildrop. I have read dozens of webs/howto/emails but couldnt solve it. My objective is moving automatically spam messages to a spam folder. My email server is working perfectly. It marks spam in subject and headers using spamassasin. My box has: Ubuntu 9.04 Web: Apache2 + Php5 + MySQL MTA: Postfix 2.5.5 + SpamAssasin + virtual users using mysql IMAP: Courier 0.61.2 + Courier AuthLib WebMail: SquirrelMail I have read that I could use Squirrelmail directly (not a good idea), procmail or maildrop. As I already have maildrop in the box (from courier) I have configured the server to use maildrop (added an entry in transport table for a virtual domain). I found this error in email: This is the mail system at host foo.net I'm sorry to have to inform you that your message could not be delivered to one or more recipients. It's attached below. For further assistance, please send mail to postmaster. If you do so, please include this problem report. You can delete your own text from the attached returned message. • Setting up a DNS name server for a mass virtual host with Bind9

    - by Dez
I am trying to set up a chrooted DNS name server in a local LAN like this everyone connected in the LAN can have access to the mass virtual hosts defined for a development ambience without having to edit manually their local /etc/hosts one by one. The mass virtual host is named example.user.dev (VirtualDocumentRoot /home/user/example ) and example.test (DocumentRoot /var/www/example). I set up everything and the /var/log/syslog doesn't show any error, but when checking the DNS with: host -v example.test Doesn't find the host. Also using the dig command I don't receive answer. dig -x example.test ; << DiG 9.5.1-P3 << -x imprimere ;; global options: printcmd ;; Got answer: ;; -HEADER<<- opcode: QUERY, status: NXDOMAIN, id: 47844 ;; flags: qr rd ra; QUERY: 1, ANSWER: 0, AUTHORITY: 1, ADDITIONAL: 0 ;; QUESTION SECTION: ;imprimere.in-addr.arpa. • bind9 DNS Ubuntu names pingible on server, but not on Windows Machines?

    - by leeand00
I setup a DNS server today on Ubuntu, following this tutorial. My intent was to setup my network for dns-name resolving on the private LAN within a single zone (nothing fancy I just want name resolution). I've tested the setup on the DNS server machine itself, and I can ping all the machines listed in the configuration file. I've also configured the Windows Machines on my network, and for some reason they are incapable of pinging by names as was possible on the DNS Server itself. I've tried running nslookup on the Windows DNS clients and I receive and error mentioning the address of the DNS server. DNS forwarding works fine, I'm not having any trouble accessing the internet, the problem only lies within accessing names within the private LAN. Here are my configuration files: options { directory "/var/cache/bind"; // If there is a firewall between you and nameservers you want // to talk to, you may need to fix the firewall to allow multiple // ports to talk. See http://www.kb.cert.org/vuls/id/800113 // If your ISP provided one or more IP addresses for stable // nameservers, you probably want to use them as forwarders. // Uncomment the following block, and insert the addresses replacing // the all-0's placeholder. // forwarders { // 0.0.0.0; // }; forwarders { 8.8.8.8; 8.8.8.4; 74.242.0.12; //68.87.76.178; }; auth-nxdomain no; # conform to RFC1035 listen-on-v6 { any; }; }; /etc/bind/named.conf.options zone "leerdomain.local" { type master; file "/etc/bind/zones/leerdomain.local.db"; notify no; }; zone "2.168.192.in-addr.arpa" { type master; file "/etc/bind/zones/rev.2.168.192.in-addr.arpa"; notify no; }; /etc/bind/named.conf.local Lookup: $TTL 3D @ IN SOA ns.leerdomain.local. admin.leerdomain.local. Additionally trying to ping by name also fails on machines that are not the DNS Server. Is there something wrong with my configuration of either the nameserver or the Windows Boxes that is keeping me from accessing other machines using names?

  • Why do I get "ignoring out-of-zone data" when restarting BIND

    - by 6bytes
I've been using my own DNS server but then I moved to a third part DNS provider. Yesterday I wanted to go back to using my own DNS's and cancel this third party service. I've lowered TTL in current DNS conf, changed DNS info in GoDaddy for my domain and that's when problems started. My domain seems to be working only for some people but not for others so clearly something is wrong. When restarting bind service named restart everything seems to be OK but later in email from Logwatch I'm getting errors like this: mydomain.com:30: ignoring out-of-zone data (ns1.mydns.com): 3 Time(s) mydomain.info:16: ignoring out-of-zone data (ns1.mydns.com): 5 Time(s) Can anyone point me in the right direction? • SQLExpress service unable to start Error code 17053

    - by Chris Sobolewski
A user was instructed by their software support to upgrade a program and install SQLExpress as part of the installation process. Since that time, the service has been able to start, citing error 17053, which appears to be an authentication issue. • what's wrong with my Ubuntu 11.10 bind9 configuration?

I've followed several tutorials on installing your own nameservers and I'm pretty much at my wit's end, because I cannot get them to resolve. Btw, my domain name "www.example.com" that I've used in this question is being forwarded to my ISP's nameservers. Would that affect my bind9 configuration? I want to learn how to do set up nameservers on my own for learning, so that is why I'm going through all this trouble.

  • Postfix MySql Dovecot - SMTP Authentication Failure

    - by borncamp
Hello I have a Postfix setup with Dovecot and MySql. The server is running Debian Squeeze. The MySql server is a slave that has data pushed to it from a primary (postfix) mail server(running a different os). The emails are stored on a replicated GlusterFS volume. I am able to check email using thunderbird over IMAP. However, SMTP requests fail. After turning on query logs for the MySql server I have noticed that no query statement is executed to retrieve the user information when an SMTP client tries to authenticate. I'd like to know what I'm doing wrong or what the next troubleshooting steps are. I'm about to pull my hair out. Below is some log and configuration data that I thought would be relevant. You're help is much obliged. • Call to daemon in a /etc/init.d script is blocking, not running in background

    - by tony
I have a Perl script that I want to daemonize. Basically this perl script will read a directory every 30 seconds, read the files that it finds and then process the data. To keep it simple here consider the following Perl script (called synpipe_server, there is a symbolic link of this script in /usr/sbin/) : #!/usr/bin/perl use strict; use warnings; my $continue = 1; $SIG{'TERM'} = sub { $continue = 0; print "Caught TERM signal\n"; }; $SIG{'INT'} = sub { $continue = 0; print "Caught INT signal\n"; }; my $i = 0; while ($continue) { #do stuff print "Hello, I am running " . ++$i . "\n"; sleep 3; } So this script basically prints something every 3 seconds. Then, as I want to daemonize this script, I've also put this bash script (also called synpipe_server) in /etc/init.d/ : #!/bin/bash # synpipe_server : This starts and stops synpipe_server # # chkconfig: 12345 12 88 # description: Monitors all production pipelines # processname: synpipe_server # pidfile: /var/run/synpipe_server.pid # Source function library. . /etc/rc.d/init.d/functions pname="synpipe_server" exe="/usr/sbin/synpipe_server" pidfile="/var/run/${pname}.pid" lockfile="/var/lock/subsys/${pname}" [ -x $exe ] || exit 0 RETVAL=0 start() { echo -n "Starting $pname : " daemon ${exe} RETVAL=$? PID=$! echo [ $RETVAL -eq 0 ] && touch ${lockfile} echo $PID > ${pidfile} } stop() { echo -n "Shutting down $pname : " killproc ${exe} RETVAL=$? echo if [ $RETVAL -eq 0 ]; then rm -f ${lockfile} rm -f ${pidfile} fi } restart() { echo -n "Restarting $pname : " stop sleep 2 start } case "$1" in start) start ;; stop) stop ;; status) status ${pname} ;; restart) restart ;; *) echo "Usage: $0 {start|stop|status|restart}" ;; esac exit 0 So, (if I have well understood the doc for daemon) the Perl script should run in the background and the output should be redirected to /dev/null if I execute : service synpipe_server start But here is what I get instead : [root@master init.d]# service synpipe_server start Starting synpipe_server : Hello, I am running 1 Hello, I am running 2 Hello, I am running 3 Hello, I am running 4 Caught INT signal [ OK ] [root@master init.d]# So it starts the Perl script but runs it without detaching it from the current terminal session, and I can see the output printed in my console ... which is not really what I was expecting. Moreover, the PID file is empty (or with a line feed only, no pid returned by daemon). Does anyone have any idea of what I am doing wrong ? EDIT : maybe I should say that I am on a Red Hat machine. Scientific Linux SL release 5.4 (Boron) Would it do the job if instead of using the daemon function, I use something like : nohup ${exe} >/dev/null 2>&1 & in the init script ?

  • Why are my httpd mpm_prefork processes being reaped so quickly?

    - by Dan Pritts
We've got a system running RHEL6, x64. We are using a local installation of apache 2.2.22 from source. we serve primarily: mod_perl applications (with a local installation of perl 5.16.0) tomcat applications proxied with mod_jk Here is some context; the main question is below. All of this talks to an Oracle backend. We are having issues with Oracle becoming unresponsive. We think this is because we're hitting the maximum process limit in oracle. We've upped the process limit, but now we are hitting memory pressure on the oracle server. We have tons of oracle sessions sitting idle. I can trace a bunch of them back to the httpd processes. We have mod_perl's Apache::DBI start up a new connection to the database with each httpd child that's spawned. We are concerned that these are not always getting closed out properly when the httpd's exit...and the httpd's are exiting very frequently. I know that it would be good to modify the mod_perl applications to use some better form of db connection pooling; we plan to pursue that but would like to solve our immediate problem sooner. So here's the main question. We are using the prefork MPM. The apache child processes are lasting at most a few minutes. Log analysis shows that each one is serving fewer than 50 clients before exiting; the last request each child serves is OPTIONS * HTTP/1.0 on some sort of internal connection; I'm under the impression that this is a "ping" from the master process. I've adjusted the MPM config as follows. I didn't want to raise MinSpareServers too high, because, after all, i'm trying to minimize the number of sessions to oracle. MinSpareServers 5 MaxSpareServers 30 MaxClients 150 MaxRequestsPerChild 10000 Right now we're serving 250-300 requests per minute. We've got 21 httpd's running, the eldest (other than the master, owned by root) being 3 minutes old. This rate of reaping of the apache children really seems excessive. What could be causing it? Apache was built with: $ ./configure --prefix=/opt/apache --with-ssl=/usr/lib --enable-expires --enable-ext-filter --enable-info --enable-mime-magic --enable-rewrite --enable-so --enable-speling --enable-ssl --enable-usertrack --enable-proxy --enable-headers --enable-log-forensic Apache config info: % /opt/apache/bin/httpd -V Server version: Apache/2.2.22 (Unix) Server built: Jul 23 2012 22:30:13 Server's Module Magic Number: 20051115:30 Server loaded: APR 1.4.5, APR-Util 1.4.1 Compiled using: APR 1.4.5, APR-Util 1.4.1 Architecture: 64-bit Server MPM: Prefork threaded: no forked: yes (variable process count) Server compiled with.... -D APACHE_MPM_DIR="server/mpm/prefork" -D APR_HAS_SENDFILE -D APR_HAS_MMAP -D APR_HAVE_IPV6 (IPv4-mapped addresses enabled) -D APR_USE_SYSVSEM_SERIALIZE -D APR_USE_PTHREAD_SERIALIZE -D SINGLE_LISTEN_UNSERIALIZED_ACCEPT -D APR_HAS_OTHER_CHILD -D AP_HAVE_RELIABLE_PIPED_LOGS -D DYNAMIC_MODULE_LIMIT=128 -D HTTPD_ROOT="/opt/apache" -D SUEXEC_BIN="/opt/apache/bin/suexec" -D DEFAULT_PIDLOG="logs/httpd.pid" -D DEFAULT_SCOREBOARD="logs/apache_runtime_status" -D DEFAULT_LOCKFILE="logs/accept.lock" -D DEFAULT_ERRORLOG="logs/error_log" -D AP_TYPES_CONFIG_FILE="conf/mime.types" -D SERVER_CONFIG_FILE="conf/httpd.conf" modules are compiled into apache rather than shared libs: % /opt/apache/bin/httpd -l Compiled in modules: core.c mod_authn_file.c mod_authn_default.c mod_authz_host.c mod_authz_groupfile.c mod_authz_user.c mod_authz_default.c mod_auth_basic.c mod_ext_filter.c mod_include.c mod_filter.c mod_log_config.c mod_log_forensic.c mod_env.c mod_mime_magic.c mod_expires.c mod_headers.c mod_usertrack.c mod_setenvif.c mod_version.c mod_proxy.c mod_proxy_connect.c mod_proxy_ftp.c mod_proxy_http.c mod_proxy_scgi.c mod_proxy_ajp.c mod_proxy_balancer.c mod_ssl.c prefork.c http_core.c mod_mime.c mod_status.c mod_autoindex.c mod_asis.c mod_info.c mod_cgi.c mod_negotiation.c mod_dir.c mod_actions.c mod_speling.c mod_userdir.c mod_alias.c mod_rewrite.c mod_so.c One final note - the red hat httpd, apr, and perl packages are all installed, but ldd shows that none of those libraries are linked with the running httpd.

  • Too many Bind query (cache) denied, DNS attack?

    - by Jake
Once Bind crashed and I did: tail -f /var/log/messages I see a massive number of logs every second. Is this a DNS attack? or is there something wrong? Sometimes I see a domain in logs like this: dOmAin.com (upper and lower). As you see there is only one single domain in the logs with different IPs Oct 10 02:21:26 mail named[20831]: client 74.125.189.18#38921: query (cache) 'ns1.domain2.com/A/IN' denied Oct 10 02:21:26 mail named[20831]: client 192.221.144.171#38833: query (cache) 'domain.com/A/IN' denied Oct 10 02:21:26 mail named[20831]: client 74.125.189.17#42428: query (cache) 'ns2.domain2.com/A/IN' denied Oct 10 02:21:26 mail named[20831]: client 192.221.146.27#37899: query (cache) 'domain.com/A/IN' denied Oct 10 02:21:26 mail named[20831]: client 193.203.82.66#39263: query (cache) 'domain.com/A/IN' denied Oct 10 02:21:26 mail named[20831]: client 8.0.16.170#59723: query (cache) 'domain.com/A/IN' denied Oct 10 02:21:26 mail named[20831]: client 80.169.197.66#32903: query (cache) 'dOmAin.com/A/IN' denied Oct 10 02:21:26 mail named[20831]: client 134.58.60.1#47558: query (cache) 'domain.com/A/IN' denied Oct 10 02:21:26 mail named[20831]: client 192.221.146.34#47387: query (cache) 'domain.com/A/IN' denied Oct 10 02:21:26 mail named[20831]: client 8.0.16.8#59392: query (cache) 'domain.com/A/IN' denied Oct 10 02:21:26 mail named[20831]: client 74.125.189.19#64395: query (cache) 'domain.com/A/IN' denied Oct 10 02:21:26 mail named[20831]: client 217.72.163.3#42190: query (cache) 'domain.com/A/IN' denied Oct 10 02:21:26 mail named[20831]: client 83.146.21.252#22020: query (cache) 'domain.com/A/IN' denied Oct 10 02:21:26 mail named[20831]: client 192.221.146.116#57342: query (cache) 'domain.com/A/IN' denied Oct 10 02:21:26 mail named[20831]: client 193.203.82.66#52020: query (cache) 'domain.com/A/IN' denied Oct 10 02:21:26 mail named[20831]: client 8.0.16.72#64317: query (cache) 'domain.com/A/IN' denied Oct 10 02:21:26 mail named[20831]: client 80.169.197.66#31989: query (cache) 'dOmAin.com/A/IN' denied Oct 10 02:21:26 mail named[20831]: client 74.125.189.18#47436: query (cache) 'ns2.domain2.com/A/IN' denied Oct 10 02:21:26 mail named[20831]: client 74.125.189.16#44005: query (cache) 'ns1.domain2.com/A/IN' denied Oct 10 02:21:26 mail named[20831]: client 85.132.31.10#50379: query (cache) 'domain.com/A/IN' denied Oct 10 02:21:26 mail named[20831]: client 94.241.128.3#60106: query (cache) 'domain.com/A/IN' denied Oct 10 02:21:26 mail named[20831]: client 85.132.31.10#59118: query (cache) 'domain.com/A/IN' denied Oct 10 02:21:26 mail named[20831]: client 212.95.135.78#27811: query (cache) 'domain.com/A/IN' denied /etc/resolv.conf ; generated by /sbin/dhclient-script nameserver 4.2.2.4 nameserver 8.8.4.4 Bind config: // generated by named-bootconf.pl options { directory "/var/named"; /* * If there is a firewall between you and nameservers you want * to talk to, you might need to uncomment the query-source * directive below. • Setting up home DNS with Ubuntu Server

    - by Zeophlite
I have a webserver (with static IP 192.168.1.5), and I want to have my machines on my local network to be able to access it without modifying /etc/hosts (or equivalent for Windows/OSX). My router has Primary DNS server 192.168.1.5 Secondary DNS server 8.8.8.8 (Google's public DNS). Nginx is set up to server websites externally as *.example.com Internally, I want *.example.local to point to the server. My webserver has BIND9 installed, but I'm unsure of the settings. I've been through various contradicting tutorials, and so most of my settings have been clobbered. I've stripped out the lines which I'm confused about. The tutorials I looked at are http://tech.surveypoint.com/blog/installing-a-local-dns-server-behind-a-hardware-router/ and http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=236093 . They mostly differ on what should be put in /etc/bind/zones/db.example.local and /etc/bind/zones/db.192, so I've left the conflicting lines out below. Can someone suggest what the correct lines are to give my above behaviour (namely *.example.local pointing to 192.168.1.5)? /etc/network/interfaces auto lo iface lo inet loopback auto eth0 iface eth0 inet static address 192.168.1.5 netmask 255.255.255.0 broadcast 192.168.1.255 gateway 192.168.1.254 /etc/hostname avalon /etc/resolv.conf # Dynamic resolv.conf(5) file for glibc resolver(3) generated by resolvconf(8) # DO NOT EDIT THIS FILE BY HAND -- YOUR CHANGES WILL BE OVERWRITTEN /etc/bind/named.conf.options options { directory "/var/cache/bind"; forwarders { 8.8.8.8; 8.8.4.4; }; dnssec-validation auto; auth-nxdomain no; # conform to RFC1035 listen-on-v6 { any; }; }; /etc/bind/named.conf.local zone "example.local" { type master; file "/etc/bind/zones/db.example.local"; }; zone "1.168.192.in-addr.arpa" { type master; file "/etc/bind/zones/db.192"; }; /etc/bind/zones/db.example.local $TTL 604800 @ IN SOA avalon.example.local. webadmin.example.local. ( 4 ; Serial, increment each edit 604800 ; Refresh 86400 ; Retry 2419200 ; Expire 604800 ) ; Negative Cache TTL ; What do I need to add to the above files so that on a laptop on the internal network, I can type in webapp.example.local, and be served by my webserver? EDIT I made several changes to the above files on the webserver. /etc/network/interfaces (end of file) dns-nameservers 127.0.0.1 dns-search example.local /etc/bind/zones/db.example.local (end of file) @ IN NS avalon.example.local. @ IN A 192.168.1.5 avalon IN A 192.168.1.5 webapp IN A 192.168.1.5 www IN CNAME 192.168.1.5 /etc/bind/zones/db.192 (end of file) IN NS avalon.example.local. 73 IN PTR avalon.example.local. As a side note, my spare Win7 machine was able to connect directly to webapp.example.local, but for a Ubuntu 13.10 machine, I had to make the following changes as well (not on the webserver, but on a separate machine): /etc/nsswitch.conf before hosts: files mdns4_minimal [NOTFOUND=return] dns mdns4 after hosts: files dns /etc/NetworkManager/NetworkManager.conf before dns=dnsmasq after #dns=dnsmasq The issue remains that its not wildcard DNS, and so I have to add entries to /etc/bind/zones/db.example.local for webapp1, webapp2, ...

  • Spooling in SQL execution plans

    - by Rob Farley
Sewing has never been my thing. I barely even know the terminology, and when discussing this with American friends, I even found out that half the words that Americans use are different to the words that English and Australian people use. That said – let’s talk about spools! In particular, the Spool operators that you find in some SQL execution plans. This post is for T-SQL Tuesday, hosted this month by me! I’ve chosen to write about spools because they seem to get a bad rap (even in my song I used the line “There’s spooling from a CTE, they’ve got recursion needlessly”). I figured it was worth covering some of what spools are about, and hopefully explain why they are remarkably necessary, and generally very useful. If you have a look at the Books Online page about Plan Operators, at http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms191158.aspx, and do a search for the word ‘spool’, you’ll notice it says there are 46 matches. 46! Yeah, that’s what I thought too... Spooling is mentioned in several operators: Eager Spool, Lazy Spool, Index Spool (sometimes called a Nonclustered Index Spool), Row Count Spool, Spool, Table Spool, and Window Spool (oh, and Cache, which is a special kind of spool for a single row, but as it isn’t used in SQL 2012, I won’t describe it any further here). Spool, Table Spool, Index Spool, Window Spool and Row Count Spool are all physical operators, whereas Eager Spool and Lazy Spool are logical operators, describing the way that the other spools work. For example, you might see a Table Spool which is either Eager or Lazy. A Window Spool can actually act as both, as I’ll mention in a moment. In sewing, cotton is put onto a spool to make it more useful. You might buy it in bulk on a cone, but if you’re going to be using a sewing machine, then you quite probably want to have it on a spool or bobbin, which allows it to be used in a more effective way. This is the picture that I want you to think about in relation to your data. I’m sure you use spools every time you use your sewing machine. I know I do. I can’t think of a time when I’ve got out my sewing machine to do some sewing and haven’t used a spool. However, I often run SQL queries that don’t use spools. You see, the data that is consumed by my query is typically in a useful state without a spool. It’s like I can just sew with my cotton despite it not being on a spool! Many of my favourite features in T-SQL do like to use spools though. This looks like a very similar query to before, but includes an OVER clause to return a column telling me the number of rows in my data set. I’ll describe what’s going on in a few paragraphs’ time. So what does a Spool operator actually do? The spool operator consumes a set of data, and stores it in a temporary structure, in the tempdb database. This structure is typically either a Table (ie, a heap), or an Index (ie, a b-tree). If no data is actually needed from it, then it could also be a Row Count spool, which only stores the number of rows that the spool operator consumes. A Window Spool is another option if the data being consumed is tightly linked to windows of data, such as when the ROWS/RANGE clause of the OVER clause is being used. You could maybe think about the type of spool being like whether the cotton is going onto a small bobbin to fit in the base of the sewing machine, or whether it’s a larger spool for the top. A Table or Index Spool is either Eager or Lazy in nature. Eager and Lazy are Logical operators, which talk more about the behaviour, rather than the physical operation. If I’m sewing, I can either be all enthusiastic and get all my cotton onto the spool before I start, or I can do it as I need it. “Lazy” might not the be the best word to describe a person – in the SQL world it describes the idea of either fetching all the rows to build up the whole spool when the operator is called (Eager), or populating the spool only as it’s needed (Lazy). Window Spools are both physical and logical. They’re eager on a per-window basis, but lazy between windows. And when is it needed? The way I see it, spools are needed for two reasons. 1 – When data is going to be needed AGAIN. 2 – When data needs to be kept away from the original source. If you’re someone that writes long stored procedures, you are probably quite aware of the second scenario. I see plenty of stored procedures being written this way – where the query writer populates a temporary table, so that they can make updates to it without risking the original table. SQL does this too. Imagine I’m updating my contact list, and some of my changes move data to later in the book. If I’m not careful, I might update the same row a second time (or even enter an infinite loop, updating it over and over). A spool can make sure that I don’t, by using a copy of the data. This problem is known as the Halloween Effect (not because it’s spooky, but because it was discovered in late October one year). As I’m sure you can imagine, the kind of spool you’d need to protect against the Halloween Effect would be eager, because if you’re only handling one row at a time, then you’re not providing the protection... An eager spool will block the flow of data, waiting until it has fetched all the data before serving it up to the operator that called it. In the query below I’m forcing the Query Optimizer to use an index which would be upset if the Name column values got changed, and we see that before any data is fetched, a spool is created to load the data into. This doesn’t stop the index being maintained, but it does mean that the index is protected from the changes that are being done. There are plenty of times, though, when you need data repeatedly. Consider the query I put above. A simple join, but then counting the number of rows that came through. The way that this has executed (be it ideal or not), is to ask that a Table Spool be populated. That’s the Table Spool operator on the top row. That spool can produce the same set of rows repeatedly. This is the behaviour that we see in the bottom half of the plan. In the bottom half of the plan, we see that the a join is being done between the rows that are being sourced from the spool – one being aggregated and one not – producing the columns that we need for the query. Table v Index When considering whether to use a Table Spool or an Index Spool, the question that the Query Optimizer needs to answer is whether there is sufficient benefit to storing the data in a b-tree. The idea of having data in indexes is great, but of course there is a cost to maintaining them. Here we’re creating a temporary structure for data, and there is a cost associated with populating each row into its correct position according to a b-tree, as opposed to simply adding it to the end of the list of rows in a heap. Using a b-tree could even result in page-splits as the b-tree is populated, so there had better be a reason to use that kind of structure. That all depends on how the data is going to be used in other parts of the plan. If you’ve ever thought that you could use a temporary index for a particular query, well this is it – and the Query Optimizer can do that if it thinks it’s worthwhile. It’s worth noting that just because a Spool is populated using an Index Spool, it can still be fetched using a Table Spool. The details about whether or not a Spool used as a source shows as a Table Spool or an Index Spool is more about whether a Seek predicate is used, rather than on the underlying structure. Recursive CTE I’ve already shown you an example of spooling when the OVER clause is used. You might see them being used whenever you have data that is needed multiple times, and CTEs are quite common here. With the definition of a set of data described in a CTE, if the query writer is leveraging this by referring to the CTE multiple times, and there’s no simplification to be leveraged, a spool could theoretically be used to avoid reapplying the CTE’s logic. Annoyingly, this doesn’t happen. Consider this query, which really looks like it’s using the same data twice. I’m creating a set of data (which is completely deterministic, by the way), and then joining it back to itself. There seems to be no reason why it shouldn’t use a spool for the set described by the CTE, but it doesn’t. On the other hand, if we don’t pull as many columns back, we might see a very different plan. You see, CTEs, like all sub-queries, are simplified out to figure out the best way of executing the whole query. My example is somewhat contrived, and although there are plenty of cases when it’s nice to give the Query Optimizer hints about how to execute queries, it usually doesn’t do a bad job, even without spooling (and you can always use a temporary table). When recursion is used, though, spooling should be expected. Consider what we’re asking for in a recursive CTE. We’re telling the system to construct a set of data using an initial query, and then use set as a source for another query, piping this back into the same set and back around. It’s very much a spool. The analogy of cotton is long gone here, as the idea of having a continual loop of cotton feeding onto a spool and off again doesn’t quite fit, but that’s what we have here. Data is being fed onto the spool, and getting pulled out a second time when the spool is used as a source. (This query is running on AdventureWorks, which has a ManagerID column in HumanResources.Employee, not AdventureWorks2012) The Index Spool operator is sucking rows into it – lazily. It has to be lazy, because at the start, there’s only one row to be had. However, as rows get populated onto the spool, the Table Spool operator on the right can return rows when asked, ending up with more rows (potentially) getting back onto the spool, ready for the next round. (The Assert operator is merely checking to see if we’ve reached the MAXRECURSION point – it vanishes if you use OPTION (MAXRECURSION 0), which you can try yourself if you like). Spools are useful. Don’t lose sight of that. Every time you use temporary tables or table variables in a stored procedure, you’re essentially doing the same – don’t get upset at the Query Optimizer for doing so, even if you think the spool looks like an expensive part of the query. I hope you’re enjoying this T-SQL Tuesday. Why not head over to my post that is hosting it this month to read about some other plan operators? At some point I’ll write a summary post – once I have you should find a comment below pointing at it. @rob_farley

  • Simplify your Ajax code by using jQuery Global Ajax Handlers and ajaxSetup low-level interface

    - by hajan
Creating web applications with consistent layout and user interface is very important for your users. In several ASP.NET projects I’ve completed lately, I’ve been using a lot jQuery and jQuery Ajax to achieve rich user experience and seamless interaction between the client and the server. In almost all of them, I took advantage of the nice jQuery global ajax handlers and jQuery ajax functions. Let’s say you build web application which mainly interacts using Ajax post and get to accomplish various operations. As you may already know, you can easily perform Ajax operations using jQuery Ajax low-level method or jQuery $.get, $.post, etc. Simple get example: $.get("/Home/GetData", function (d) { alert(d); }); As you can see, this is the simplest possible way to make Ajax call. What it does in behind is constructing low-level Ajax call by specifying all necessary information for the request, filling with default information set for the required properties such as data type, content type, etc... If you want to have some more control over what is happening with your Ajax Request, you can easily take advantage of the global ajax handlers. In order to register global ajax handlers, jQuery API provides you set of global Ajax methods. You can find all the methods in the following link http://api.jquery.com/category/ajax/global-ajax-event-handlers/, and these are: ajaxComplete ajaxError ajaxSend ajaxStart ajaxStop ajaxSuccess And the low-level ajax interfaces http://api.jquery.com/category/ajax/low-level-interface/: ajax ajaxPrefilter ajaxSetup For global settings, I usually use ajaxSetup combining it with the ajax event handlers. $.ajaxSetup is very good to help you set default values that you will use in all of your future Ajax Requests, so that you won’t need to repeat the same properties all the time unless you want to override the default settings. Mainly, I am using global ajaxSetup function similarly to the following way: $.ajaxSetup({ cache: false, error: function (x, e) { if (x.status == 550) alert("550 Error Message"); else if (x.status == "403") alert("403. Not Authorized"); else if (x.status == "500") alert("500. Internal Server Error"); else alert("Error..."); }, success: function (x) { //do something global on success... } }); .csharpcode, .csharpcode pre { font-size: small; color: black; font-family: consolas, "Courier New", courier, monospace; background-color: #ffffff; /*white-space: pre;*/ } .csharpcode pre { margin: 0em; } .csharpcode .rem { color: #008000; } .csharpcode .kwrd { color: #0000ff; } .csharpcode .str { color: #006080; } .csharpcode .op { color: #0000c0; } .csharpcode .preproc { color: #cc6633; } .csharpcode .asp { background-color: #ffff00; } .csharpcode .html { color: #800000; } .csharpcode .attr { color: #ff0000; } .csharpcode .alt { background-color: #f4f4f4; width: 100%; margin: 0em; } .csharpcode .lnum { color: #606060; } Now, you can make ajax call using low-level $.ajax interface and you don’t need to worry about specifying any of the properties we’ve set in the $.ajaxSetup function. So, you can create your own ways to handle various situations when your Ajax requests are occurring. Sometimes, some of your Ajax Requests may take much longer than expected… So, in order to make user friendly UI that will show some progress bar or animated image that something is happening in behind, you can combine ajaxStart and ajaxStop methods to do the same. First of all, add one <div id=”loading” style=”display:none;”> <img src="@Url.Content("~/Content/images/ajax-loader.gif")" alt="Ajax Loader" /></div> anywhere on your Master Layout / Master page (you can download nice ajax loading images from http://ajaxload.info/). Then, add the following two handlers: $(document).ajaxStart(function () { $("#loading").attr("style", "position:absolute; z-index: 1000; top: 0px; "+ "left:0px; text-align: center; display:none; background-color: #ddd; "+ "height: 100%; width: 100%; /* These three lines are for transparency "+ "in all browsers. */-ms-filter:\"progid:DXImageTransform.Microsoft.Alpha(Opacity=50)\";"+ " filter: alpha(opacity=50); opacity:.5;"); $("#loading img").attr("style", "position:relative; top:40%; z-index:5;"); $("#loading").show(); }); $(document).ajaxStop(function () { $("#loading").removeAttr("style"); $("#loading img").removeAttr("style"); $("#loading").hide(); }); .csharpcode, .csharpcode pre { font-size: small; color: black; font-family: consolas, "Courier New", courier, monospace; background-color: #ffffff; /*white-space: pre;*/ } .csharpcode pre { margin: 0em; } .csharpcode .rem { color: #008000; } .csharpcode .kwrd { color: #0000ff; } .csharpcode .str { color: #006080; } .csharpcode .op { color: #0000c0; } .csharpcode .preproc { color: #cc6633; } .csharpcode .asp { background-color: #ffff00; } .csharpcode .html { color: #800000; } .csharpcode .attr { color: #ff0000; } .csharpcode .alt { background-color: #f4f4f4; width: 100%; margin: 0em; } .csharpcode .lnum { color: #606060; } Note: While you can reorganize the style in a more reusable way, since these are global Ajax Start/Stop, it is very possible that you won’t use the same style in other places. With this way, you will see that now for any ajax request in your web site or application, you will have the loading image appearing providing better user experience. What I’ve shown is several useful examples on how to simplify your Ajax code by using Global Ajax Handlers and the low-level AjaxSetup function. Of course, you can do a lot more with the other methods as well. Hope this was helpful. Regards, Hajan
