• Crystal Reports not included in Visual Studio 2010 – What are the consequences for the introduction

  Yesterday I stumbled over the information that Crystal Reports will no longer be included in Visual Studio 2010. Instead – it will be provided as a free download, but with a separate installation and a separate release date. According to the linked information the release of CR will be later than that of VS. My projects depend in parts on CR and I want to shift early to VS 2010. So there are some related questions: Can I use VS 2010 with the older 2008 version of CR? Do I need a workstation with a preinstalled VS 2008 or is the installation of the CR redistribution package sufficient to run that? Are there any experiences with the VS Beta concerning that?

• Configure session length with htaccess

  My home web server is running the stock OSX Apache 2 install. I have some directories with content that I want to secure, so I setup htaccess files for those areas. However, I find it annoying to have to login to those areas as frequently as I do. Once I'm logged in I'd like to not have to login again for a long time, similar to setting a long time in a cookie. But, I'd like to increase the life time of the authenticated session with htaccess. I've googled but haven't found what I'm looking for, maybe because I'm looking for the wrong term. I want to configure the 'session length', 'session timeout', 'time limit', or 'expiration' for users authenticated via htaccess. Any thoughts?

  I just spent the last 10 hours of my life on this & am running in circles, so was hoping someone may be able to help me. I want a specific URL to load like this: http://example.com/f/2011/image.png?attribute=small When a URL in a format such as this hits, I'd like to rewrite it to hit the server as: http://example.com/generate.php?f=2011/image.png&attribute=small Based on above, my question is two-fold: How can I rewrite the URL in htaccess to meet my requirements above? If the original URL didn't have the attribute query string parameter, how can I ensure attribute will be false/blank/etc when it hits the server via htaccess?

What are your experiences? Do you use some form of AOP? Like Springs @Configurable annotation? Load time or build time weawing? Problems you encountered? Do you use manual injection? Then how do you handle different instantiation scenarios (creating of the objects through an library [like Hibernate], creating objects with "new" ...)? • Are folks using the VB6 "Common Controls Replacement Project" controls? Any caveats or showstoppers?

  I'm considering using the VB6 Common Controls Replacement Project controls and would like to see what other's experiences with them are. Specifically: What do you need to distribute with them? (I assume just the .OCX file) Do I need to register the .ocx file or just include in the app directory? Do these controls depend on any other ocx's? (There is mention, for example in the Progress Bar replacement that it is using COMCTL32.DLL but the .DEP file does not list that DLL. Are they at least as robust as the controls they replace?

  Hi all, This is may not be a true programming question but deals with geolocation Api, hence hoping StackOverflow is the right place for this. I'm calling the navigator.geolocation.getCurrentPosition at every 3 seconds interval. After 10-15 tries the responses stop. So i'm wondering is there a limit on the number of calls being made, Or is it because i'm testing it with a desktop and hence instead of giving back the same response each time the API is waiting for a change of location. • Why can't there be an "ultimate" programming language? [closed]

  There is an uncountable sum of programming languages out there. They obviously all have their pro's and con's - but why can't there be one to "beat them all"? The main part of a programming language is it's syntax and what's possible with it. The rest are usually only a bunch of libraries, frameworks and extensions wrapped around it. So couldn't you combine all the great aspects and experiences gained from the thousands of programming languages out there to build one with a syntax that fits every task? Wouldn't it be better having only one programming language? I see only problems with the current amount of the ones in use. Why can't there be a perfect language when thinking of syntax, constructs and typing?

• Mail being sent as root on Ubuntu 14.04

  I'm really struggling with this. I'm trying to set up this server to send mail using Gmail's SMTP. Google keeps bouncing the messages, saying that that Authentication is required: smtp.gmail.com[74.125.196.109]:25: 530-5.5.1 Authentication Required.   Like a lot of people on Stack Overflow I love to read books about programming, almost as much as I love to read the lists that people add onto their websites, Blog's and this very website. However, for every gem there are a thousand turds, and to one developer a gem could just be a shiny turd to another. Whilst there are hundreds of book questions on this website asking users to recommend books that they have loved I have decided (after looking for a similar question and not finding it) to create a list of books that users have detested. After all, if we're going to fork out money for these books it'd be a good idea to get both positive and negative aspects out there. However, if I add any gems to my environment.rb: config.gem "authlogic" And run the same generator, I get the following: /Library/Ruby/Gems/1.8/gems/rails-2.3.5/lib/rails/gem_dependency.rb:119:Warning: Gem::Dependency#version_requirements is deprecated and will be removed on or after August 2010.   Is there a solution to create a virtual machine and start it by having an executable file, that will start the machine? If possible to start as quickly as possible. Strange situation? Not at all. Read on... Real life scenario Since we can't have domain controller on a non-server OS it would be nice to have domain controller in an as thin as possible machine (possibly Samba or similar because we'd like to make it startup as quickly as possible - in a matter of a few seconds) packed in a single executable. We could then configure our non-server OS to run the executable when it starts and before user logs in. This would make it possible to login into a domain.

• What's the easiest way to upgrade a single laptop hard drive?

  My HD is coming near the end of it's life and I wondered if producing an image of the original was all that was required? What's the best software to use for this and how can I accomplish it - can I use my other laptop for the image file or do I need to buy an external HD to accomplish the clone? Does having several partitions of both FAT32 and NTFS with partition magic installed affect things at all? Is it just a matter of making the image, swapping in the new HD and copying the image to that?

• Webserver for publishing adjusted images

  I want to create webserver which will be receiving data (images probably) from webclients who will be uploading these photos. And then the webserver must execute some graphic programs (client select whichone) to modify the image(s). After the graphic program is done, the results (output image(s)) will be uploaded to the web temp database (by webserver) to publish results of graphic programs. I found the C++ web toolkit (http://www.webtoolkit.eu), but I'm not sure if this is a suitable C/C++ library for me because I haven't any experiences with making C/C++ web apps/servers. Can someone tell me some advice please? The webserver should have some SDK too, for adding next graphic programs. I'm searching only for any C/C++ tools/libraries/etc.

• Apache Ubuntu SSL Configuration

  Where besides the vhost configuration can SSL be configured? I see an SSL configuration in sites-available but it's not an enabled vhost (and the certificate it points to is expired). Using apache2 -V shows me the configuration directory is /etc/apache2 but I can not for the life of me find the SSL configuration and it's driving me crazy. • Open source framework à la Microsoft Sync Framework suggestions?

  We are implementing a warehouse management system atop an open source stack (Java, web services & friends). In this system, we want to integrate many mobile devices which should also be capable of adequate online/offline functionality, e.g. preparing database inserts while a mobile device is temporarily unconnected, and performing them on the backend database when reconnected. For a .NET stack, Microsoft Sync Framework would be a perfect solution, e.g. to do database replication and hoarding. Can anyone suggest an open source alternative to the MS Sync Framework and possibly describe his experiences with it? Thanks in advance for any answers.

• Removing 'bundled' software to make a slow laptop faster?

  My brother-in-law has a cheap HP laptop used by his kids for schoolwork. It had got into a bit of a state and was running slowly with some dubious software. I removed a bunch of stuff that had been installed, that was obviously not required (three different driver scanners!), had been downloaded in error or looked like malware. I also disabled as many 'start on login' apps as I could and removed AVG replacing it with MSE. (AVG is uninstalled and replaced with MSE after failing to detect malware) What remains is a significant quantity of bundled HP and 'nero backup' software, including a HP restore utility (apparently something like the osx hidden partition restore), the trackpad driver. is there anything else I can do to breath a little more life into the old 'celeron' laptop? Should I bit the bullet and just put win8 on it? Will the trackpad still work?

  We are using trac and are really satisfied with it. However, out of the box, trac is best suited for single-project environments only. I'd be interested to hear about the various approaches people take to make it work with multiple projects nevertheless and their experiences with them. Are there any plugins to recommend? Any patches, tweaks or whatnots? Are you maybe even using an entirely different bug-tracking system that offers all of trac's functionality plus multi-project support? We recently started managing a second project ourselves which generally works okay but also has some drawbacks, especially where the two projects overlap because of common library code we wrote that is used in both projects. • How does one record audio from a Javascript based webapp?

  I'm trying to write a web-app that records WAV files (eg: from the user's microphone). I know Javascript alone can not do this, but I'm interested in the least proprietary method to augment my Javascript with. My targeted browsers are Firefox for PC and Mac (so no ActiveX). Please share your experiences with this. I gather it can be done with Flash (but not as a WAV formated file). I gather it can be done with Java (but not without code-signing). Are these the only options? @dominic-mazzoni I'd like to record the file as a WAV because because the purpose of the webapp will be to assemble a library of good quality short soundbites. I estimate upload will be 50 MB, which is well worth it for the quality. The app will only be used on our intranet. • How to automount a Truecrypt volume before login in Windows 7?

  I have an external hard drive containing all my documents, and it is encrypted with a password via Truecrypt. I'd like my desktop computer at home to automatically mount the volume prior to my logging in (so that it can be used as my user folder) without asking me for a password. (Yes, the password can be saved in plain text on my desktop's hard drive - that's okay.) For the life of me, I can't figure out a way to do this that actually works though. Tried using the Task Scheduler to schedule a mount when the computer starts up, and it works, but the volume is only accessible by my user account after I log in. (Haven't tried every combination of users/options for the scheduled task, so maybe there's something else there I need to try.) Also tried adding a startup script for my user account that runs on login, which evidently is too late to set up the user's profile folder. Anybody ever successfully achieve this or something like it?

  The IT department just made my life a little bit harder again: they introduced a manual HTML login page for all websites they have not "classified". This means that all the applications which try to access unclassified websites for e.g. downloading plugins do not work. Examples: Eclipse plugin installation, Maven builds etc. What would be the easiest workaround for this? The best I've come up with is try to extend/customize Ruby's httpproxy.rb that comes with Webrick. I would automate the manual login process whenever that login response page is detected. This sounds quite painful, and I think there might/should be simpler options?
