• How to increase signal/range of your Wi-Fi antenna-less repeater/booster over the network?

  I've BT Home Hub in the upper flat (2-3 walls behind) and I'm using WPS Wireless-N Wifi Range Router Repeater Extender in my flat where I'm using my laptop. These are antenna-less devices. Are there any life-hack tricks to increase signal/range of my repeater without buying the new more powerful repeater? I've tried already to move my repeater closer to the ceiling or putting the aluminium foil underneath, but it didn't help. Are there any methods, specific plates or materials which can boost the signal?   Scenario Multiple application servers host web services written in Java, running in SpringSource dm Server. To implement a new requirement, they will need to query a read-only PostgreSQL database. Issue To support redundancy, at least two PostgreSQL instances will be running. Access to PostgreSQL must be load balanced and must auto-fail over to currently running instances if an instance should go down. Auto-discovery of newly running instances is desirable but not required. Research I have reviewed the official PostgreSQL documentation on this issue. However, that focuses on the more general case of read/write access to the database. • Java: IDE working well with Maven War overlays

  We have a Java EE 6 web application which is fully mavenized, and we use the Maven "war overlay" facility to add customer specific files, and which currently runs in Glassfish 3.1. We have traditionally used Eclipse for development, but I have found that the combination of Maven processing and War deployments may not be optimal in terms of deployment times, and that the mavenization allows us to use any IDE with good Maven support. Therefore is Eclipse the best bet for our particular scenario (maven war overlays - glassfish, and debugging it) or is e.g. Netbeans or IntelliJ better? Please, back opinions with actual experiences, thanks.

• How to automatically resume php-fpm?

  I am using nginx+php-fpm on Debian Squeeze for a busy server and have had great difficulty to deal with maximum connections being reached. Here the problem is that php processes sometimes just die randomly under high load and leave the server with no php process. Then I need to manually restart php5-fpm service to bring back the server to life. I am wondering how to avoid this to happen, or at least treat the symptoms by restarting the php5-fpm automatically whenever there is not php process left to listen to incoming requests. My relevant configs are: pm = dynamic pm.max_children = 1400 pm.start_servers = 10 pm.max_spare_servers = 20 pm.process_idle_timeout = 1s; #not sure it will be useful when pm=dynamic pm.max_requests = 100000 request_terminate_timeout = 30 I appreciate your suggestions to cope with this nasty problem.

• Updating Silverlight with data. JSON or WCF?

  We will be using custom Silverlight 4.0 controls on our ASP.NET MVC web page to display data from our database and was wondering what the most efficient method was? We will be having returned values of up to 100k records (of 2 properties per record). We have a test that uses the HTML Bridge from Javascript to Silverlight. First we perform a post request to a controller action in the MVC web app and return JSON. This JSON is then passed to the Silverlight where it is parsed and the UI updated. This seems to be rather slow, with the stored procedure (the select) taking about 3 seconds and the entire update in the browser about 10-15sec. Having a brief look on the net, it seems that WCF is another option, but not having used it, I wasn't sure of it's capability or suitability. Does anyone have any experiences or recommendations?

• Windows 7 Firewall configuration

  I had a PC set up with a VPN. I used the Windows 7 firewall to block all NON-VPN traffic to the internet, but all LAN traffic was allowed. So, with the VPN connected I could connect to all networked machines and the internet. Without the VPN connected I could only connect to the LAN and had no internet access. Unfortunately my drive failed, and I'm setting up the machine again with a replacement drive. I can't for the life of me work out how to set up the firewall again. I can easily set it up to block all NON-VPN traffic, but can't work out how to that and still allow all LAN traffic whether the VPN is connected or not. Some pointers would be useful. Thanks.

• Frameworks And 'traditional' coding

  Hello Sorry if this too open ended for this forum, but here goes. I mostly use languages such as PHP and Javascript without frameworks (e.g Jquery, Drupal, CakePHP). The only real exception to this for me, is Wordpress when 'traditional' coding is slower for building information sites. I've dabbled with several frameworks over the past year and despite everyone else's (seemingly) good experiences with them, I seem to of hit a roadblock. My basic problem is that for the amount of time invested in effectively relearning a language, I don't get a lot in return. Jqeury as an example. There is really very little in that, that I couldn't accomplish easily with a few getElement.. commands. So my question is, what advantages do frameworks offer over previous coding styles? • Is ActiveMQ unreliable?

  Hello, We have been using ActiveMQ 5.2 in our distributed enterprise application for about 3 months. During that time, we have experienced debilitating failures at least twice weekly. In particular, we see: 1) Topic publisher has its connection arbitrarily closed and experiences EOF on attempt to publish. Note well that this issue is not a function of some timeout. It does not correlate reliably with any inactivity. 2) Queue listeners never receive message. Message simply sits on Queue. 2) is much rarer (hardly ever) than 1). In both cases, the failures are highly intermittent-- they cannot be reliably reproduced through any testing usage pattern. Also, there are no errors or warning in the AMQ logs. Have others experienced similar problems? Is there an opinion that some other JMS provider is more reliable? thanks, Joe

• Microsoft CA certificate templates expires sooner than expected

  The certificates my Microsoft CA is generating do not match the time period indicated in the template used. How can I resolve this? I recently created a new certificate template for use on my Linux boxes on my Microsoft CA (2008 R2 Enterprise). This template is approved for server and client authentication purposes with a validity period of 10 years - the expected lifetime of our Linux boxes - and the subject name supplied in the request. I have checked both the intermediate and offline CA - both have more than 10 years of life listed. Is there some kind of hard limit I'm hitting here?

• What are those white circles on the desktop in Gnome 3?

  I have Fedora 20 with GNOME 3.10.2. On the desktop background (i.e. where the wallpaper is), there are five small white circles centered at the very bottom of the screen. The first is filled, the others are not. I can click those circles, thereby changing which one is filled, like a radio button. I cannot for the life of me figure out what those circles are supposed to do, and it's starting to drive me crazy. Clicking and thus changing which circle is filled does nothing I can perceive, and there seems to be no configuration option anywhere that has anything to do with them. What are those things? Is there any way to get rid of them? Edit: I made a screenshot of my desktop with no programs running. You can see the dot/circle thingies at the bottom.   Currently working on a new Zend application and developing the Model. Having worked with Zend_Db_Table before, I opted to replace references in the Model to the Table API with a custom SQL script to take care of data access duties. Now I'm looking at developing a new application/domain model, and I wanted to get some feedback from people re: their experiences with Zend_Db API vs raw SQL, and use cases where it would be preferable to use the API. From a project perspective, the DB platform is unlikely to change from MySQL - so it doesn't need to be particularly abstract - and I assume writing a custom SQL API will be more performant than the assorted classes the Zend DB API requires.

• Java preferences API throughput

  I'm using Java Preferences API to store window position and size of Swing application. At this moment, I'm listening to window resize/reposition events and storing the position and size every time they change. However, that means that if user slowly resizes window which is 200px wide to 400px wide, I'll probably write new window size about 200 times during pretty short time. Preferences API uses whichever datastore is available on the host system (windows registry for Windows etc.) - but the question is, what are limitations or best practices for properties API? Is it OK, or would it be smart to write only when user has finished resizing? Anyone had experiences with Properties API on different platforms?

• Missing disk space in Windows XP

  On my mother's Lenovo laptop, Windows XP claims that the hard drive is almost full. According to the properties window, 52.7 out of 55.2 GB is in use: By deleting temp files from Internet Explorer, System Restore, Recycle bin, Windows Update, System Cleanup, I managed to free up about one GB. That's still 50 GB in use, which still is a lot more than I expected. Hence, I gave good old WinDirStat a spin, and here's the output: It might be hard to read here, but the first line says that the total amount of disk space in use on drive C is 24.3 GB. So Windows claims usage of 52.7 GB and WinDirStat can only account for 24.3 GB. Where is the other half of that disk space being used? I hope someone has an answer, or some tricks or tips to do further research. UPDATE: The laptop in question has an SSD hard drive. I am aware that these disk (at least the earlier ones) have a limited life-time. Could the symptoms described be caused by wear and tear on the SSD?

• Reliable 1tb or larger hard drive?

  I am in the market for 2-3 new drives, I would like each to be at least 1tb to 2tb in size. I have been reading all the reviews on newegg.com for 1tb and larger drives and they all have 1 thing in common. Almost all the ones I read about have complaints of them being DOA or dieing within a few weeks of use. I am hoping to find some drives with this storage range that have a reputation for lasting a long time instead of a short life. Please help me if you have any experience with these sort of drives? Most the ones I read about were Western Digital brand. I realize some might complain that this questions answer would be based upon a timeframe, so if a user searches and find this answer a year from now it will be outdated but I would appreciate any help based on the current hard drives available as of April 10th, 2010 on newegg.com

• Is there a way of combining Ogre3d's Hikari and BlazeDS?

  I am trying to load a swf into an Ogre3d/Hikari application and that swf uses BlazeDS to communicate with a Tomcat server. The swf is from another project that is used in a browser environment. So, the swf is served from Tomcat to the client's browswer. It seems like there are two main issues. The first is a sandbox issue with using the swf in a different sandbox type than a browser environment. The other issue seems to be setting up the BlazeDS message broker and the other communication channels and endpoints. As far as both of the issues are concerned, it seems like the Hikari application is similar to an Adobe Air application and can use similar approaches. Does this seem like a reasonable approach? Does anybody have any similar experiences? If so, how were things configured?

• Funnelling http traffic

  I have a situation where a large batch of servers (X), on demand, need to request data from a smaller set of web servers (Y). The worst case scenario is if all servers in X decide to fetch different requests to one server in Y. That would be X amount of connections, which could be a very large burst of traffic. The best case scenario is if 1 server in X hit 1 server in Y in tandem. Life does not work like this. One idea to entertain is placing a proxy, similar to squid between X and Y. All of X servers can connect to this proxy, but would result in a few persistent (http keepalive) connections to Y. If The few were say, 3 or 4, then it would funnel. If we could then rate limit those connections and traffic decides to spike unusually high, we wouldn't hurt anyone but ourselves. Thoughts?

• How to print 4 index cards on a single A4 sheet in Word 2003

  I have an index card designed in Word. It's fairly complicated with graphics, borders and background. The page layout has been set to landscape and with size set to 4x6. How can I print this, 4x per A4 landscape sheet? I cannot for the life of me work it out. The printer always seems to do a single card per A4 sheet, wasting 3/4 of the page. "Pages 1,1,1,1" will result in 4 sheets being printed. What am I doing wrong?

• I accidentally hid my Gnome Panel

  I got a new tablet pc, and in attempt to hide the empathy mail icon, accidentally made the entire panel dissappear. (The one at the top that has applications/places/system, and battery life/network connections etc). I don't believe I killed it, because alt+f2, then gnome-panel does not bring it back. I've tried alt+ctrl+backspace to reset gnome, that didn't bring it back. It must just be some setting like 'hide' or something... Any tips to get it back? Thanks.

• OS X 10.8.3 + attempt to change VPN settings = no more VPN access

  I am running Mountain Lion and had gotten very tired of re-entering my password at random times when using my school's VPN network (I don't know much about these, but the type is Cisco IPSec according to the setup instructions I followed a while back). In an attempt to make life easier, I followed the instructions here, but, alas, any attempt to connect with VPN was met with the message "A configuration error has occurred. Verify your settings and try connecting again" (or something along those lines.) I then tried to do the steps in the blog post in reverse and change everything back. Upon (supposedly) doing that, though, a new error message came when attempting to connect to VPN: "The negotiation with the VPN server failed. Verify the server address and try reconnecting." Now I have no idea what to do. Is there a way to reset all VPN-related things in my system so that I can follow my school's instructions and just start over?

• Why are nanosleep() and usleep() too slow?

  I have a program that generates packets to send to a receiver. I need an efficient method of introducing a small delay between the sending of each packet so as not to overrun the receiver. I've tried usleep() and nanosleep() but they seem to be too slow. I've implemented a busy wait loop and had more success, but it's not the most efficient method, I know. I'm interested in anyone's experiences in trying to do what I'm doing. Do others find usleep() and nanosleep() to function well for this type of application? Thanks, Danny Llewallyn

• Which machine learning library to use

  I am looking for a library that, ideally, has the following features: implements hierarchical clustering of multidimensional data (ideally on similiarity or distance matrix) implements support vector machines is in C++ is somewhat documented (this one seems to be hardest) I would like this to be in C++, as I am most comfortable with that language, but I will also use any other language if the library is worth it. I have googled and found some, but I do not really have the time to try them all out, so I want hear what other people had for experiences. Please only answer if you have some experience with the library you recommend. P.S.: I could also use different libraries for the clustering and the SVM.

• Why do LCD screens need a backlight? (seriously)

  Bare with me on this, I'm well aware that most LCDs have backlights. But what if, they DIDN'T? I spend long hours in front of a screen and I hate the concept of staring into a lightbulb all the time and my eyes getting sore. I need to get a new lcd (some sort of IPS that doesn't cost a fortune) soon, but no matter what I'll get, I'll still be looking at a damn light. How come you can read on a kindle w/o a backlight but there aren't any monitors like that? I mean, ideally, a screen should be like a book or any other object in real life. • How to make the jump from consumer support to enterprise support?

  I am currently a high level consumer break/fix technician responsible for about 300-400 repairs a month. I am good at my job, but bored, and I want to move into the enterprise side of my company, dealing with Server 2008 R2 and exchange and switches and routers that cost more than I make in a month. How do I make this transition? Whats the best thing to learn first? Is there a standard trajectory for making this leap from consumer to business? I am full time employed, so going back to school is not a great option, but I have no life, so spending my nights and weekends reading and practicing is totally within my realm. I am basically overwhelmed by the number of things to learn, and looking for any advice you may have on the best way to proceed. PS - I apologize if this is a not quite the right forum for this, I know its not a technical question exactly, but I also know the sorts of people I want to answer this question are reading this website.

• Django freezes when adding objects through the admin

  I have a Django 1.1 website running via Apache/mod_wsgi with a PostgreSQL 8.3.1 database. Recently, when I added objects through the admin interface, the connection froze up and I lost several worker processes, so I had to restart Apache. Upon trying to replicate this, I found that it only happens through the admin: if I go into the Django shell and issue the same insert, it works fine. Also, performing an UPDATE operation works without issues, so just INSERTs. I've rebuilt indexes on PostgreSQL and run a full VACUUM. Error logs don't show anything, and I can't figure out for the life of me what's wrong. Anyone have any ideas?

• How to use 2 or more internet connections on the same network?

  Living in a joint family we have 3 internet connections, each floor has one internet connection which is split per floor. Each internet connection is shared between 4-5 computers using a switch per floor. Each of these internet sharing networks are independent of each other. What I want to achieve here is a local network (for local messenger and file sharing) that can combine all the 3 independent networks, problem is that whenever I try to do that the whole network tends to use just one internet connection. I have all the necessary hardware. How do I solve this problem, one approach could be that I could get one PC to act as a server and bridge the internet connections and then the whole network would have to access the internet through this server. Theoretically this could be possible but I have never tried this approach in real life. Also if certain computers need be restricted from internet access how would this be possible on the same network?
