• What are my options for a disk with what seems to be a corrupted filesystem?

  I have a friend with an old Dell that will not boot into Windows. It has an IDE drive. It spins up. I have an IDE to USB device. I've attached the drive via that device to a working laptop. The drive does not mount. If I go into Disk Management I can see the drive but it will not initalize, says "Drive not ready." I've also booted into a linux live cd to see if the drive mounts, it does not. I am just trying to recover some pictures from the drive. The data is not important enough to send to a professional. The issue is more of a curosity on how to recover data if and when these situations would occur in the future.

• How to inspect/modify Windows Firewall rules while the Windows Firewall/ICS service is stopped and disabled?

  I'm trying to fix up my friend's remote Windows Server 2003 R2 machine. I have Remote Desktop access at the moment. However, I notice that Windows Firewall/Internet Connection Sharing service of the remote machine is disabled, which seems to be a bad idea. If I enable and start the service now, I may lose my Remote Desktop access in case the exception rule for Remode Desktop has not been defined in Windows Firewall. So I need a way to inspect and modify exception rules even as the Windows Firewall/ICS service is stopped and disabled. Does anybody know how?

• Moving a File While It's In Use -- How Does it work?

  I've noticed that on non-windows OS.... ie linux/mac i can do things like: - Send a zip to a friend over aim - Delete the file while it's in transfer And the transfer does not fail. Or, I can do operations like.. - start a movie - erase the file - the movie still plays to completion (read from disk, not just buffered in memory) Although the files are being "deleted", as i mentioned, they are actually being moved to a different location on the file system... ie a Trash directory or something. So it seems to me like the OS uses a pointer @ the file that is updated when it moves rather than accessing the files directly. Can anyone shed some light on how this AWESOME capability is actually implemented? I'm not even sure what to google to learn more about it. thank you.

  Hey there, a friend of mine gave me a printer/scanner because he could not print with it anymore. the point is this thing has been lying in the cellar for quite some time now and the cables are missing. that is the power cable for my power plug ( there are foreign ones included) and more importantly the connection to the computer. I have googled around for a bit and tried to get to a hotline,but my problem is : Where can i get those cables from? At that moment, does it then grab your Gmail address book, the Flash Cookies, and all the Local Shared Objects it can find, i.e. at the instant you READ the message with the ShoppyBag virus, is it already too late? Do you have to Delete it to the Trash , then Delete Forever it , without reading it to be safe?

• strange problem with my motherboard

  i have strange problem with my computer. i tried to turn it on, the computer was started ok, but i didnt see anything on screen. i tried to understand what cause the problem. its was'nt the HD or the screen. when i opened the computer, i saw that the fan connected to my motherboard didnt work. the funny thing is that i drove to a friend of mine, so he would fix me the computer, and when we tried to open the computer there it worked somehow and the fan worked also. when i came back home the computer again didnt work and the fan didnt work as well. does someone know what can cause the problem?

• Windows XP Log In: Can't do it. Logon Message popup.

  A friend recommended this site to me. Hope you can help! I can't seem to log into Windows. I boot my computer. The log In screen appears. I put in my user name and password, hit OK, and the following message pops up: "The system could not log you on. Make sure your user name and domain name are correct, then type your password again. Letters in your passwords must be typed using the correct case". NOTE: I have tried Safe Mode and the same message pops up. Just to be clear, I am not able to get into Windows (I'm stressing this b/c I've come across some suggestions that require you to be in Windows, which doesn't help in my case). • Where can I find a list of recent updates from Microsoft?

Products such as MS Office, Windows, MSSQL, etc. Only way I know to get a list of updates, is to go to the update page, and it only shows me ones I do not have. I've always done this sort of thing with Excel, and with newer versions, to me (this is emphasized "to me", so this doesn't get taken as an Excel rant post), it's becoming troublesome. • Computer Software Needed

  A friend started my website with Frontpage 2000 in Oct04. I used it until 09 and started to use Kompozer. I am starting to have difficulty updating my picture pages. Some pictures never show up or show up as X. I'm not sure what the problem is. I haven't been able to figure out how to upload files to Filezilla either. Is there a software program similar to Frontpage and Kompozer that will allow me to do weekly updates/addition to my picture pages without recreating the whole page? I dabbled with Web Builder 8-Easy WebEditor-Expression Web and Pagebreeze.

• Can't access sub domain from my network [closed]

  I am trying to access http://www.abc.xyz.com from my network, but not able to do so. However, http://www.xyz.com is opening fine in my browser. Asked a friend to open abc.xyz.com from his machine(in a different network), its opening fine. Checked my firewall settings as well. There's no such rule to deny the specific site or something that could be denying access to the sub domain. Kindly advise, how I can troubleshoot my problem.

  After I have successfully connected to a Windows 7 box via the built-in VPN: how do I access shares, shared printers, network appliances, etc.? So, call me bad at googling, but: I can find dozens of articles on "How to Set up a VPN Connection" and "How to connect to a VPN" for Windows 7... but I can't find a single article on how to access resources after connecting. I have a home VPN set up in Windows 7; I was able to connect to it from my friend's Windows 7 machine last night. I expected to be able to UNC into my shares; I also expected to be able to go to "Start Computer" and Click "Network" on the left side, and then see all of the devices on my home network (while the VPN was connected). Am I missing something obvious? How do I make this happen?

  Please suggest some good software that lets you mix music seamlessly. I have tested some software and most of them are hard to use. I have tried fruity loops, FruityLoops I think is great for people who have some experience with mixing music. What I'm looking for is software for people who don't have experience with mixing. The pieces of music I am planning to join are different from each other, they have different Tempo and Beat. The music will be used in my friend's dance and she wants the music to contentiously play without pausing or jumping to another song. She wants the songs to flow smoothly. Any Advice? Thanks!

• Could 1 GB of RAM work better than 1.25?

  This is for a server running Ubuntu Server 10.10. The server is an old desktop PC. It had 2 sticks of 256 MB of 182-pin DDR 400 MHz RAM in it (total 512 MB of RAM). I just ordered a 1 GB stick of compatible RAM for the machine (now would have a total of 1.25 GB of RAM). A friend told me that it might run better if I removed both sticks of 256 MB RAM and used just the 1 GB stick I will be receiving. This seems counterintuitive since then there would only be 1 GB of RAM instead of 1.25; is it possible that it would be better to run with 1 GB or is he totally wrong? Thanks for the help.

• How to un-partition a drive on windows 7

  I bought this laptop used from a friend. The laptop has 500gb of storage; however, the drive is partioned. The C: drive has an allocated space of 50gb whereas the partition has 396gb allocated to it. How do i either take some of the space from the partition and move it to the C: drive, or get rid of the partition? I've done some searching and people say I'm supposed to be able to use "Disc Management" to "delete volume," but when i right click on the partition the "delete volume" is not enabled. • How can we recover/restore lost/overwritten data in our MSSQL 2008 table?

  I am in serious trouble and I am seeking professional advices here. We are using MSSQL server 2008. We removed primary key, replaced exiting data with new data resulted losing our critical business data in its child tables on MSSQL Server. It was completely human mistake and we didn't have disk failure. 1) The last backup file was a month ago which means it is useless. 2) We created Maintenance Plans to backup our database at 12AM everyday but those files are nohwere to be found 3) A friend of mine said we can recover from Transaction Logs. When I go to TaskRestore Transaction log is dimmed/disabled. 4) I checked ManagementMaintenance Plans. I can't find any restored point there. It seems that our maintenance plan hasn't been working. Is there any third party tool to recover lost/overwritten data from MSSQL table? Thanks a lot.

• Ping or accessing WAN IP from LAN results in failure on only one box

  Morning/evening gents. I purchased a radical domain name today to set up a name for my services and to set up SSL. I configured the SSL fine and all but when I went to my website I couldn't connect. I can connect to the site with any other device in my house and my friend can connect to it as well from outside of the LAN. I am hosting the services with my computer and I can't access the service. Whenever I ping it using the command prompt I get a result of "General Failure.". It saddens me that they couldn't make a better message as it kind of brings me down. I'm not sure what's the deal here as I have all of my firewalls down and my ports are forwarded. Running Windows 7. Thanks for the assistance chaps.

  Possible Duplicate: Laptop power supplies, does current matter? I'm in Colombia, South America and the power adapter on my HP Pavilion DV4-1125nr laptop died. The adapter is rated at 65W input 1.6A & output 18.5V 3.5A. A friend found me a Dell adapter rated at 65W input 1.5A & output 19.5V 3.34A. Both have center + polarities. Seems very stable and not having unusual heat problems. Do you think it is safe to use this adapter without harming my laptop?

• Best tool for writing a Programming Book?

  Well, this is not directly programming related! But a friend of mine wants to write a book about programming. Now he asked me if I knew a good software for this, because Word crashes 10 times a day on his machine, and OpenOffice is just very chunky and slow. Also none of them seem to have any useful support for including Code Listings (examples) with useful syntax highlighting or at least some sort of support for inserting code (i.e. indicating line breaks with arrows that turn around, line numbers, etc). Latex is out of question since it's incredible hard to use and has no really useful feature for including tables. It's a mess. Maybe some IT authors are here who can give some hints what tools they use. That would be great!
