  I'm thinking of making a little web tool for analyzing the search engine optimization and web accessiblity of a whole website. First of all, this is just a private tool for now. Crawling a whole website takes up alot of resources and time. I've found out that wget is the best option for downloading the markup for a whole site. I plan on using PHP/MySQL (maybe even CodeIgniter), but I'm not quite sure if that's the right way to do it. There's always someone who recommends Python, Ruby or Perl. I only know PHP and a little bit Rails. I've also found a great HTML DOM parser class in PHP on SourceForge. But, the thing is, I need some feedback on what I should and should not do. Everything from how I should make the crawl process to what I should be checking for in regards to SEO and WCAG. So, what comes to your mind when you hear this?

• Data Usage Checker Tools

  Hey All, I am about to begin a project for a new client, and am worried about a few things concerning data usage on their internet plan. We're in an area where most of the major networks don't cover the area, and the ones that do, have very expensive plans, with very low data allowance per month. I need to develop an app, but part of the problem lies with checking database values every 30 seconds. It's pretty important that this check is happening every 30 seconds, as the database is actually updated all day everyday, approx. every 5seconds (apparently). Each row in the database consists of about a page full of text if you were to paste it into MS Word. So, are there any logical ways of minimizing data usage in my case, and also how am I able to see exactly how much data is used just to establish a connection to the database? Are there any tools for this kind of info? Thanks :)

  I'm working on a personal game engine in C# and need to give certain characters / sprites responses to conditions or certain patterns that they follow and since these patterns will be repeated over and over for other characters / sprites, I don't want to tie the patterns to the character / sprite. I will likely want to define the conditions / actions in level data files... I plan to use this for platformers, space shooters, and pack man like games... Almost an extenable AI system. So My plan is using a USB-Serial .. and a SIPO (serial in parallel out) shift register circuit. As you know with this circuit we need to send a binary data in series and this data will be stored in it's register. ''; echo $output; Problem is when I try to read worked, it tells me the variable worked is not there event.result.worked myhttp.lastResult.worked The only thing that works is using toString() myhttp.lastResult.toString() or event.result.toString() What am I doing wrong? I plan to add other variables to the output time, so need to access each time and worked separately. I may also need to return multiple responses each with their own worked and time values. How do I do that. I was thinking to not use XML. Is there a more lightweight option. Flex shows I have the following options: array e4x flashvars object text xml

• How to receive a datastream from a device on your computer, in C#

  I plan to build a small audio-recorder app in C#. My laptop has a built in Microphone that's always active, so I want to use that as an early-stage test. I would simply start recording, save the file as a .wav or even use the LAME dll to make it into an MP3. The problem is, I don't know how to contact that microphone. Do I use a library that can detect a device, or do I just catch a stream of bytes from the port that the device is on? I don't have any experience with receiving data from connected devices. I suppose that I'll need to enter all the data into a byte array and then Serialize that into a WAV file, but I'm not sure. Can I get some pointers on this subject?

  I have a C++ program that is reading in info from a file, that stores info seperated by "$$$$". An example of how the file looks is: abc bcd $$$$ def $$$$ qwe gfh $$$$ How can I detect the file has ended, without using the eof() function? I have it set like this, getline(sin,temp) if (temp=="$$$$") { } After reading the last set of four dollars, how can I check the next line to ensure another set of data isn't beginning, and that the file has ended? If the file has indeed ended, I plan on using a boolean flag to terminate the while loop.

• Is there a way to localize input type="date" in HTML5

  I know that at the time of this writing only Opera supports a browser UI for <input type="date" name="mydate"> and maybe my attempts to localize this field have been met with frustration because niceties like localization have not yet been included in their implementation, but I don't even see mention of it in the HTML5 spec. Is there a way that localization should be specified? Should I do lang="fr" on a parent element? Some notes on the implementation of the site in question: Localization (language) is explicitly picked by the user because they are managing data in multiple languages and it is not reasonable to expect that the user's browser chrome is in the language being viewed or that the browser is providing desired language request headers. I want to be sure that if the page is rendered in French that the date picker provided by browser chrome shows options that make sense for French language. The plan is to fall back to jQueryUI for browsers that do not support type="date", I will use the detection mechanism provided in Dive into HTML 5

  We have several legacy & 3'd-party systems in organization that use several RDBMS vendors (& more specific data storages). Cross-system data reporting (as well as extra-reports that are not implemented in 3'd-party systems) is required with charts and population of templates (winword, excel). Reporting system is visioned as intranet web-site with custom user access to reports. We expect ~50 reports per day. Would you suggest to use BizTalk or any other integration software if commercial-department doesn't plan to buy anything expensive. Would you suggest to create centralized data storage for reporting that is populated regularly or rely on on-demand services that providers always up-to-request data. Thank you in advance!

I plan on having each element of the XML from the feed as an item of a class/struct. I'm really looking for LINQ to XML examples, and a good book. • Vector.erase(Iterator) causes bad memory access

  Hi, I am trying to do a Z-Index reordering of videoObjects stored in a vector. The plan is to identify the videoObject which is going to be put on the first position of the vector, erase it and then insert it at the first position. Unfortunately the erase() function always causes bad memory access. Here is my code: testApp.h: vector<videoObject> videoObjects; vector<videoObject>::iterator itVid; testApp.cpp: // Get the videoObject which relates to the user event for(itVid = videoObjects.begin(); itVid != videoObjects.end(); ++itVid){ if(videoObjects.at(itVid - videoObjects.begin()).isInside(ofPoint(tcur.getX(), tcur.getY()))){ videoObjects.erase(itVid); } } This should be so simple but I just don't see where I'm taking the wrong turn. • How easy would it be to refactor a small JSP/Servlet/JDBC project to SpringMVC/Hibernate

  With reference to this post, I am considering starting a new web-based Java project. Since I don't know Spring/Hibernate I was concerned if it's a bad plan to start learning them while creating a new project, especially since it will slow down the early development. One idea I had was to write a prototype using tech I do know, namely JSP/Servlets/JDBC, since I can get this running much quicker with my current knowledge. I could then throw the whole thing away and start over with Spring, etc, but I'd like to consider how easy it would be to refactor a smallish project from JSP/Servlets/JDB to SpringMVC/Hibernate? My DB could of course be re-used but what about other code... would I expect to save most of it plugged into an MVC framework, or is the paradigm shift big enough this would cause more trouble than it avoids? Please use the other question for more general advice on choosing technologies

• FreeText Query is slow - includes TOP and Order By

  The Product table has 700K records in it. The query: SELECT TOP 1 ID, Name FROM Product WHERE contains(Name, '"White Dress"') ORDER BY DateMadeNew desc takes about 1 minute to run. There is an non-clustered index on DateMadeNew and FreeText index on Name. If I remove TOP 1 or Order By - it takes less then 1 second to run. • Should I dive into ASP.NET MVC or start with ASP.NET Webforms?

  I plan to pick up Silverlight in the future. Possibility of going into Microsoft WPF. Currently learning Objective-C 2.0 w/ Cocoa. I already know Pros and Cons of ASP.NET MVC vs ASP.NET Webforms. What I want to know is what would be more "efficient" for me to learn given the circumstances above? By efficient I mean learning one design pattern once and then re-using it. Objective-C I believe uses MVC approach? What about Silverlight? WPF? So what do you think? Also as a side question is it true that ASP.NET Webforms is often used by freelancers/small companies and ASP.NET MVC in large enterprises?

My first question is: should i keep my local SVN server or you know some good service for this?   Hi, I'd like to introduce build number feature for my iPhone project and increase it automatically with every commit to my git repo. I plan to do it using Apple's agvtool, which recommends that project is not opened in XCode at the time So my questions are: 1) So far I know that I need to make an executable script from .git/hooks/pre-commit.sample. How to do the scripting to check if certain project is opened in XCode? 2) pre-commit.sh will be executed upon calling git commit with no args, so whenever someone will commit with -a option, I won't have my build number updated. • Should I Split Tables Relevant to X Module Into Different DB? Mysql

  I've inherited a rather large and somewhat messy codebase, and have been tasked with making it faster, less noodly and generally better. Currently we use one big database to hold all data for all aspects of the site. As we need to plan for significant growth in the future, I'm considering splitting tables relevant to specific sections of the site into different databases, so if/when one gets too large for one server I can more easily migrate some user data to different mysql servers while retaining overall integrity. I would still need to use joins on some tables across the new databases. Is this a normal thing to do? Would I incur a performance hit because of this?

• Developing a high-performance, scalable Comet application

  Well, the title says most of it. I'm looking to develop a chat application that will hopefully become something more, and currently I'm considering my options for what I should build it on top of. I've taken a look at Tornado with Redis as my primary option - Tornado, being a Comet server, is perfect for long polling to retrieve the messages on Redis, which I have the intention of using as both a persistent data store, as well as a message queue with its nifty subpub features. However, I've also heard good things about Django, RabbitMQ, MongoDB and Orbited. JavaScript isn't a big problem for me, so Orbited's JavaScript support isn't too much of a boon. Really, I'd probably be happy to develop on the route I've chosen for myself, but if there are any gaping deficiencies in my plan, I'd like some kind person to point them out before I find I've wasted months on this.

• How can an Android Service know that its not bound to any Activities

  I have an Android Service that I would like to keep running even after the last Activity has been popped off the stack, or the User has chosen to do something else. Essentially the Service is listening for changes on a remote server, and I would like to generate a Notification if and only if an Activity from the app isn't running(or visible). In other words, I don't want the Notifications to occur while the User is directly interacting with the app. In the case where the User is directly interacting with the app, the Service will notify the Activity and update appropriate UI elements based on the changes. I plan to implement this through the Observer pattern. How can the Service know if none of apps Activities are bound to it? Thanks, J

• JS Framework that doesn't use CSS selectors?

  A thing that I noticed about most JavaScript frameworks is that the most common way to find/access the DOM elements is to use CSS selectors. However this usually requires the framework to include a CSS selector parser, because they need to support selectors, that the browser natively doesn't, foremost the frameworks own proprietary extensions. I would think that these parsers are large and slow. Wouldn't it be more efficient to have something that doesn't require a parser, such a chained method calls? Some like: id("example").children().class("test").hasAttribute("href") instead of $("#example > .test[href]") Are there any frameworks around that do something like this? And how do they compare with jQuery and friends in regard to performance and size? EDIT: You can consider this a theoretical discussion topic. I don't plan to use anything other than jQuery in any practical projects in near furure. I was just wondering why there aren't any other, possibly better approaches.

  I have a project that I am breaking up into multiple .exe projects. I still plan on publishing them, using click once, into the same location at the same time, and I would like to use the same config file. I have added the app.config to each project using the "Add link" option in Visual Studio, which is great for debugging, but in production, when I compile each exe project, the app.config is not copied into the "master project"'s bin folder. example: master.exe with master.exe.config master.exe may launch order.exe based on user settings master.exe may launch returns.exe based on user settings master, order, and returns will all reside in the same folder, and should share a single config file.

  I'm attempting to write a custom MarkupExtension to make my life easier by giving me a better way to specify bindings in XAML. However I would like to know if there is any way I can access the object that represents the file the MarkupExtension is used in. In other words, suppose I have a UserControl that defines a particular rendition of a data model of my program. This control has lots of visual stuff like grids, borders and general layout. If I use my MarkupExtension on a particular property of some element in this UserControl, I want to access the instance of the UserControl, without knowing what type it is (I plan on using reflection). Is this at all possible?

  I'm writing a web app that will use twitter as its primary log on method. I've written code which gets the oauth token back from Twitter. My plan is now to Find the entry in my Users table for the twitter username retreived using the token, or create the entry if necessary Update the Users.TwitterOAuthToken column with the new OAuth token Create a permanent cookie with a random guid on the site and insert a record into my UserCookies table matching Cookie to User when a request comes in I will look for the browser cookie id in the UserCookies table, then use that to figure out the user, and make twitter requests on their behalf Write the oauth token into some pages as a js variable so that javascript can make requests on behalf of the user If the user clears his/her cookies the user will have to log in again to twitter Is this the correct process? Have I created any massive security holes? thanks!

I want to run an update script that will update the table with the FK of the related table only if there is one result (because if there is multiple then we need to decide which one to use, in another method) Here is what I have so far: UPDATE import_hourly_event_reports i SET i.banner_id = b.banner_id FROM banner b JOIN plan p ON b.plan_id = p.id WHERE b.campain_id = i.campaign_id AND b.size_id = i.size_id AND p.site_id = i.site_id HAVING COUNT(b.banner_id) = 1 As you can see, the HAVING clause doesn't quite work as I'd expect it. I only want to update the row in the import table with the id of the banner from the banner table if the count is equal to 1.

• another file_exists with special chars problem

  I have some folders with special characters in their names. I run currently at a test-computer with Windows OS, but later I will use LINUX. My problem is that the folders with special chars in their names cannot be recognized somehow. ex: file_exists('../Bilar/27733691_1.jpg') // TRUE file_exists('../Båtar/27733691_1.jpg') // FALSE because of the special char in folder name... How should I solve this? I plan to run LINUX in the future when website is online... would that matter? Please explain thoroughly because I am a newb at this Thanks
