• Guidance required: FIrst time gonna work with real high end database (size = 50GB).

  I got a project of designing a Database. This is going to be my first big scale project. Good thing about it is information is mostly organized & currently stored in text files. The size of this information is 50GB. There are going to be few millions of records in each Table. Its going to have around 50 tables. I need to provide a web interface for searching & browsing. I'm going to use MySQL DBMS. I've never worked with a database more than 200MB before. So, speed & performance was never a concern but I followed things like normalization & Indexes. I never used any kind of testing/benchmarking/queryOptimization/whatever because I never had to care about them. But here the purpose of creating a database is to make it quickly searchable. So, I need to consider all possible aspects in design. • Django Many-to-Many Question

  My questions seems like a common problem that when I have seen any questions on it is never really asked right or not answered. So Im going to try to get the question right, and maybe someone knows how to resolve the issue, or correct my understanding. The problem: When you have a many-to-many relation ship (related_name not through) and you are trying to use the admin interface you are required to input one of the rleationships even though it does not have to exsist for you to create the first entry. Meaning you have to assign a group to an event to create the group. Wow that sounds complicated. So I can see why the question is not getting answered. Lets try the non code explanation example... First and important versions: Django 1.1.1 Phython 2.6 So I have a model where I created a many-to-many realtionship and Im using the related_name Im creating an app that is an event organizer, for simplicty lets say events although they could be anytype). For this first post Im going to stay away from the code and just try to explain. A few keys: (explaining comment) ** - many-to-many So in the model we have 1) The Main Event (this is main model) 2) Groups (link to events and their can be many events for a group) a) Events** I have simplified this example a little becuase I recognize that what does it matter. Just create the event first... But there are specific varations where that will not work. What the many-to-many related_name does it created another table with the indecies of the two other tables. Nothing says that this extra table HAS to be populated. Becuase if I look in the database and work within myPHPadmin I can create a group with out registering an event, since the connection between the two is a seperate table the DB does not care. How do I make the admin interface this realize it? Ok I know thats a lot so I hope I have explained it clearly. Thank you anyone for your comments/thoughts/advice

• C++ struct, public data members and inheritance

  Is it ok to have public data members in a C++ class/struct in certain particular situations? How would that go along with inheritance? I've read opinions on the matter, some stated already here http://stackoverflow.com/questions/952907/practices-on-when-to-implement-accessors-on-private-member-variables-rather-than http://stackoverflow.com/questions/670958/accessors-vs-public-members or in books/articles (Stroustrup, Meyers) but I'm still a little bit in the shade. I have some configuration blocks that I read from a file (integers, bools, floats) and I need to place them into a structure for later use. I don't want to expose these externally just use them inside another class (I actually do want to pass these config parameters to another class but don't want to expose them through a public API). The fact is that I have many such config parameters (15 or so) and writing getters and setters seems an unnecessary overhead. Also I have more than one configuration block and these are sharing some of the parameters. Making a struct with all the data members public and then subclassing does not feel right. What's the best way to tackle that situation? Does making a big struct to cover all parameters provide an acceptable compromise (I would have to leave some of these set to their default values for blocks that do not use them)?

• Implimenting Zend MVC for my existing site-first step?

  Hi guys, OK-newbie question here. I'll try not to bombard SO with lots of questions-and hopefully this first one will show me the method I'll need to follow for subsequent conversions. I have a web-based calendar system that I developed, but it was coded for me procedurally (using PHP). I'm now working on learning OO and wanting to integrate this site into my localhost Zend Framework and slowly start converting parts to OO and the Zend Framework MVC process in particular. As I've said before, I understand that this will be a slow process, and when I'm done, I still probably won't have anything as OO friendly as if I had rewritten it from scratch, but I'd like to use this as a learning experience. So, I have dropped the whole site into my localhose/zend/Public folder, and everything is showing up great and linking to the database, etc. My question is-what would be the easiest first component to switch over to the MVC model? This site has a bit of everything-forms, login, authentication, some jQuery, etc. Can anyone point to a tutorial that would address what I'm trying to do? If indeed, a form would be one of the simpler things to switch, can someone walk me through those changes? Another idea is changing over all the header info, etc? Thanks for any pointers on where to start! EDIT: Also, I understand that SO is mainly for specific coding questions-I'm happy to share specific code, once I have an idea about which section to tackle first...

I think ASP.net used 3 Tier architecture while developing applications or Web applications. Where as frameworks like Zend, Symphony they use MVC. I just want to stick to a pattern that is best suitable for WebProject Development? May be this is a very silly confusion? But if someone could clear this confusion, that would be very greatful?

• Installing SVN plugin for Eclipse on Ubuntu

  I am a brand new Linux user configuring my first-ever dev sandbox in Ubuntu. I have installed Java and Eclipse and am trying to get either Subversive or Subclipse (I don't have a preference either way) but have a few questions before I start that process. I just opened Synaptic and downloaded subversion through it. (1) I'm not really sure how SVN deploys locally. My understanding is that SVN has a client and a server; the server manages the repository(ies) and the clieent just sends commands to the server. Is this correct? If so, then what did I download through Synaptic? The client, and/or the server? (2) Do these Eclipse plugins come with SVN (client or server...?) or do you have to pre-install SVN prior to installing these plugins? Basically: is SVN a pre-req for Subclipse or Subversive? Looking back at these 2 questions if someone could first explain to me the architecture of SVN, then explain how that architecture translates to downloading SVN via Synaptic, and then how it translates to downloading/installing either Eclipse plugin, I would see the "big picture" a lot better. • Efficient (basic) regular expression implementation for streaming data

  I'm looking for an implementation of regular expression matching that operates on a stream of data -- i.e., it has an API that allows a user to pass in one character at a time and report when a match is found on the stream of characters seen so far. Only very basic (classic) regular expressions are needed, so a DFA/NFA based implementation seems like it would be well-suited to the problem. Based on the fact that it's possible to do regular expression matching using a DFA/NFA in a single linear sweep, it seems like a streaming implementation should be possible. Requirements: The library should try to wait until the full string has been read before performing the match. The data I have really is streaming; there is no way to know how much data will arrive, it's not possible to seek forward or backward. Implementing specific stream matching for a couple special cases is not an option, as I don't know in advance what patterns a user might want to look for. For the curious, my use case is the following: I have a system which intercepts memory writes inside a full system emulator, and I would like to have a way to identify memory writes that match a regular expression (e.g., one could use this to find the point in the system where a URL is written to memory). • Why do people keep parsing HTML using regex? [closed]

  As much as I love regular expressions, it's obvious to me that it's not the best tool for parsing HTML, especially given the numerous good HTML parsers out there. And yet there are numerous questions on stackoverflow that attempts to parse HTML using regex. And people would always point out what a bad idea that is in the comments. And the accepted answer would often have a disclaimer how this isn't really the ideal way of doing things. But based on the constant flow of questions, it still seems that people keep parsing HTML using regex, despite the perceived difficulty in reading and maintaining it (and that's putting correctness aside for now). So my question is: why? Is it because it's easy to learn? Is it because it's faster? Is it because it's the industry standard? Is it because there are already so many reusable regexes to build from? Is it because 100% correctness is never really the objective? (90% good enough?) etc... I'd also like to hear from the downvoters why they did so. Is it because: There's absolutely nothing wrong with using regex to parse HTML and asking "Why?" is just dumb? The premise of the question is flawed because the people who are using regex to parse HTML is such a small minority?

  I have a table recording the amount of data transferred by a given service on a given date. One record is entered daily for a given service. I'd like to be able to retrieve the most recent amount for a set of services. I'm interested to see how I can retrieve the same data using either a single query or at the very least less than X queries. I'm very interested to see what might be the most efficient approach. The table currently contains 28809 records. I appreciate that there are other questions that cover selecting the most recent set of records. I have examined three such questions but have been unable to apply the solutions to my problem.

• Keeping user data persistent after validates_presence_of

  I'm designing a question-and-answer Ruby on Rails application. After a user logs in, you can see a list of questions posed by other users. I have a link next to each of the questions to /answers/new?question_id=someNumber. That links to a page that displays the question (to remind the "answerer") above a standard form for submitting your answer. In order to display the question, I call @question = Question.find_by_id(params[:question_id]) and reference @question in the Haml view file: Question details %h2 #{h @question.title} #{h @question.description} %br/ %br/ %h1 Your answer - form_for(@answer) do |f| = f.error_messages %p = f.label :description, "Enter your response here" %br = f.text_area :description = f.hidden_field "question", :value => @question.id %p = f.submit 'Answer' The problem is that if I check validates_presence_of :description in Answer.rb, then I lose question_id if the user did not input anything into the description field when the page reloads, so I can't re-display the question for which the user is answering. How should I fix this? Is there a better way of storing the question the user is trying to answer so that I can display it above the form for entering a new answer (and perhaps in other views in the future)? If you need to see more code, please let me know.

• c# STILL returning wrong number of cores

  Ok, so I posted in In C# GetEnvironmentVariable("NUMBER_OF_PROCESSORS") returns the wrong number asking about how to get the correct number of cores in C#. Some helpful people directed me to a couple of questions where similar questions were asked but I have already tried those solutions. My question was then closed as being the same as another question, which is true, it is, but the solution given there didn't work. So I'm opening another one hoping that someone may be able to help realising that the other solutions DID NOT work. That question was How to find the Number of CPU Cores via .NET/C#? which used WMI to try to get the correct number of cores. Well, here's the output from the code given there: Number Of Cores: 32 Number Of Logical Processors: 32 Number Of Physical Processors: 4 As per my last question, the machine is a 64 core AMD Opteron 6276 (4x16 cores) running Windows Server 2008 R2 HPC edition. Regardless of what I do Windows always seems to return 32 cores even though 64 are available. I have confirmed the machine is only using 32 and if I hardcode 64 cores, then the machine uses all of them. I'm wondering if there might be an issue with the way the AMD CPUs are detected. FYI, in case you haven't read the last question, if I type echo %NUMBER_OF_PROCESSORS" at the command line, it returns 64. It just won't do it in a programming environment. Thanks, Justin UPDATE: Outputting PROCESSOR_ARCHITECTURE returns AMD64 from the command line, but x86 from the program. The program is 32-bit running on 64-bit hardware. I was asked to compile it to 64-bit but it still shows 32 cores.

  Hi, i'm making a questionnaire about a service quality, its contains the options (poor, regular, good, very good). It's contains 6 questions (radio button) and a suggestion box (textbox). In the table of the database i created 6 rows for questions, 1 for suggestion and 1 for date (a friend of mine tole me to use this but i didn't get why). q1) I'm going to atribute a value form 1 to 4 to the radio buttons options, and i'd like to sum every answer for each question, and then divide by the numbers of user that answered that question and give the mean. how am i supposed to to that? I'd also like generate reports of the month, of the year. q2) not only about the questionnaire but for registration too. I need all the fields to be completed, no blank options, if he don't complete all of fields it'll not be submitted and there will be a warning message to the user. q3) about the field type, i'd like it to be the same class that is in the database, i'm having a "problem". Ex: Name(varchar) : 1234(int), in the field 'name' of the table of the database 1234 will be shown as name, and i don't want this, i want only the type that i declared in the construction of the table. q4) i'd also like to know if it's possible to create pizza graphics, about the percentage of each question, is this possible? q5) I'm using phpmyadmin and some of my id's are auto_increment, but 'cause of my tests they at a high number, i'd like to restart to 0 the ids number, is this possible?   I have a basic quiz/survey type application I'm working on, and I'd like to give the user a prompt before they submit if they haven't answered all the questions. • Limiting a search to records from last_request_at...

  I am trying to figure out how to display a count for records that have been created in a table since the last_request_at of a user. In my view I am counting the notes of a question with the following code: <% unless @questions.empty? %> <% @questions.each do |question| %> <%= h(question.notes.count) %> end end This is happening in the /views/users/show.html.erb file. Instead of counting all the notes for the question, I would only like to count the notes that have been created since the users last_request_at datetime. I don't neccessarily want to scope notes to display this 'new notes' count application wide, just simply in this one instance. To accomplish I am assuming I need to create a variable in the User#show action and call it in the view but not really sure how to do that. Other information you may need: class Note < ActiveRecord::Base belongs_to :user belongs_to :question end class Question < ActiveRecord::Base has_many :notes, :dependent => :destroy belongs_to :user end

  Forward: I've scanned through the existing questions/answers on this matter. This is not a duplicitous question; I cannot find a working solution from the accepted answers. What I need: A calucalation of the difference between two dates expressed as years, months and days that works with PHP version: 5.2. <?php $current_date = date('d-M-Y'); $future_date = '2012-11-01'; ?> What I've tried: Most answers I find online don't seem to exact in that they don't factor in leap years. This highly rated answer won't work because DateTime-diff() is php 5.3+. This accepted answer results in (i.e. the second block of code aimed at PHP 5.2) results in the following being parsed: Array ( [y] = 25 [m] = 11 [d] = 7 [h] = 3 [i] = 15 [s] = 19 [invert] = 0 [days] = 9473 ) Array ( [y] = 25 [m] = 11 [d] = 7 [h] = 3 [i] = 15 [s] = 19 [invert] = 1 [days] = 9473 ) I can't tell if I've incorrectly applied the code or it's simply a case of me not knowing how to manipulate the array.

• MS 70-536 .NET Framework Foundation - info on Exam? Especially regex?

  Hi, I know there are already some questions about this, but not that specific. I have the self-paced training kit and worked through the test exam tool that is on the CD coming with the book. I constantly fail on the test tool, mostly on the regex questions. I'm not a regex guru. In fact my regex-fu is more than weak. I know what regex'es are, how I can use them and where my 'Regular expressions - kurz und gut' book is in my drawer in case I really need them. And to be honest I feel like learning regex is a total waste of time, because if I need them I have either a colleague that is fit and can do them in just a few seconds or I need my book and get them right in a still fair amount of time. And from my experience I can tell that I need regex like once in two or three years. So just putting in a lot of time into learning just the expressions to pass the exam is.. something I like not to have to do. Can you tell me something about the real exam vs. the test exam tool on the book and about the need to know regex for passing it? Thank you for your time. Marked as Community Wiki. Hope that fits?

  Hey guys, I would like to have group based restrictions that would allow users to access only specified parts of the web. I am new to the whole ACL stuff and I didn't quite get it from the manual :/ therefore I would like to ask some questions. But before any questions, my routes look like this: Router::connect('/', array('controller' => 'users', 'action' => 'login')); Router::connect('/admin/:controller/:action/*', array('prefix' => 'admin', 'admin' => true)); Router::connect('/registered/:controller/:action/*', array('prefix' => 'registered', 'registered' => true)); 1.) How do I restrict users from any other group than Administrator to access ONLY the /registered/ part of the web 2.) How do I prevent anyone from using the default addresses like www.example.com/users/add on a global scale (I want only www.example.com/admin/users/add or www.example.com/registered/users/add type of addresses)? This kind of addresses is not event set in the routes.php but they still work. Any answers apprecated

• Setting Icon for wpf application (VS 08)

  Hi everyone, Before going much further i'll mention I have tried solutions in following: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/320677/how-do-i-set-the-icon-for-my-application-in-visual-studio-2008 http://stackoverflow.com/questions/198848/set-application-icon-from-resources-in-vs-05 I am trying to set an icon for my application. AFAIK, I need potentially 3 images? 1 image is the actual image in explorer when clicking on the .exe (thumbnail for the exe) 1 image (tiny) in the top left corner (16 x 16? Not entirely sure) 1 image in the start menu dock, to the left of the app (maybe 32x32? again not sure) So thats fine. Now I have selected an Icon. How do I use it in one of above situations? I have tried adding it in resources, nothing seems to happen. Following that first SO solution, "First go to Resource View (from menu: View -- Other Window -- Resource View). Then in Resource View navigate through resources, if any. If there is already a resource of Icon type, added by Visual Studio, then open and edit it. Otherwise right-click and select Add Resource, and then add a new icon." The resource view is empty, and I cannot right click in this view. If I right click on the solution properties resources I can add the icon image, but it doesn't show in either of the locations listed above. (or anywhere that I can see) What am I doing wrong?

• Ruby, Python, or PHP?

  And so we return to the age old question - but with a few twists. This morning, I searched and read up on which web development language to learn first. I'm thinking Ruby, Python, or perhaps PHP. But I have a few questions before deciding. Background: I'm a year into C++ (through school), but want to get into web development. I have all summer to commit to one language, learn it, do some projects, get up some websites, and so on. Now my questions (and these are assuming that I should choose between Ruby, Python, and PHP - if I should choose a different language, let me know.): I hope to use whichever language I learn for websites/web apps. Some of the threads on stackoverflow suggested Python was the best overall language, but others were unanimous that Ruby was best specifically for web development. For a first language suited towards web development, which language do you recommend, and why? This might tie into the first question, but which language looks most promising for future work, future personal projects, and basically the future in general? I'm just a freshman in college. Ideally, the language I choose would be on the rise, community-wise and opportunity-wise. (One reason I'm leaning towards Ruby is that it seems a lot of the newer tech startups/successes are using it.)

Let's say I need to provide a clean report about accesibility about my web page even the hack is senseless. (I know the hack is unethical and silly, let's use it as example material, but the point of my post are the final questions) I tried the following approach: $(document).ready(function(){ $("script").each(function() { $(this).after("<noscript></noscript>"); }); }); The problem raises because I have a jQueryUI DatePicker component on my page. jQuery adds a script section after the DOM is ready so my hack fails as miss this section. So the questions are: How handles jQuery library to be executed after document is ready? How can I run my code after jQuery finish its labours?

• Most efficient way to make an activity log

  I am making a "recent activity" tab to profiles on my site and I also am going to have a log for moderators to see everything that happens on the site. This would require making an activity log of some sort. I just don't know what would be better. I have 2 options: Make a table called "activity" and then every time someone does something, add a record to it with the type of action, user id, timestamp, etc. Problem: table could get very long. Join all 3 tables (questions, answers, answer_comments) and then somehow show all these on the page in the order in which the action was taken. Problem: this would be extremely hard because I have no clue how I could make it say "John commented on an answer on Question Title Here" by just joining 3 tables. Does anyone know of a better way of making an activity log in this situation? I am using PHP and MySQL. If this is either too inefficient or hard I will probably just forget the Recent Activity tab on profiles but I still need an activity log for moderators. Here's some SQL that I started making for option 2, but this would not work because there is no way of detecting whether the action is a comment, question, or answer when I echo the info in a while loop: SELECT q.*, a.*, ac.* FROM questions q JOIN answers a ON a.questionid = q.qid JOIN answer_comments ac ON c.answerid = a.ans_id WHERE q.user = $userid AND a.userid = $userid AND ac.userid = $userid ORDER BY q.created DESC, a.created DESC, ac.created DESC Thanks in advance for any help!

• choose javascript variable based on element id from jquery

  I feel like this is a simple question, but I am still relatively new to javascript and jquery. I am developing a site for a touch interface that uses unordered lists and jquery .click functions to take input data. I have a section to input a m:ss time, with 3 divs, each containing a list of digits for time. I need to get the input for each column and set it as a variable. I originally designed the inputs to change form inputs, because I didn't understand javascript very much. It was easy to change the 3 hidden inputs by using div id's, but I can't figure out how to do it now with javascript variables. Here is my original jquery code... $("div#time>div>ul>li").click(function() { var id = $(this).parents(".time").attr("name"); var number = $(this).html(); $("input#"+id).val(number); }); The last line sets one of 3 hidden inputs equal to whatever was clicked. I need to make it so separate variables take the inputs, then I can manipulate those variables however I want. • Why is textbox.focus throwing the lostfocus event?

  I've seen a few similar questions on SO but nothing that seems to actually address the issue. Here's a simplified version of the function. Private Sub Check_Quantity(sender As System.Object, e As System.Windows.RoutedEventArgs) _ Handles textbox_quantity.LostFocus Dim worked As Boolean = Integer.TryParse(textbox_quantity.Text, quantity) If Not worked Then MsgBox("Enter a valid number for the quantity") textbox_quantity.Focus() textbox_quantity.SelectAll() quantity = 0 End If End Sub It's important to note that this is WPF. What I want to do is very simple. When someone finishes with the textbox the program checks that what they entered is a number. If it does it sticks this in an integer. If not, it tells them to fix it and keeps the focus on the textbox. The issue is a few things, but what it comes down to is this function runs in an infinite loop. This same function works fine in WinForms, but not in WPF. On some other questions people have said that the messagebox appearing causes focus to be lost, but in testing this isn't true. It still loops regardless of if the messagebox is called or not. The problem is the call to textbox_quantity.Focus(). Without that it works fine. Regardless of whether it's there or not though, focus is not set to the textbox, though textbox_quantity.Focus() still returns a value of true. Any thought of what's going on and maybe how I could fix it?
