Hello,
is it possible to put a truecrypt container on a net share and access/mount it form multiple machines (windows) at the same time?
I fear that if both would write the file could be corrupted.
I have a Brother MFC-7420 USB all-in-one laser printer. It is plugin via USB to my Windows 7 x64 machine. I have it shared to a few users on my home network.
My wife's laptop running Vista x64 can normally print fine to the printer. However it seems that every day or two, when she pushes print on a something it just sits in her laptop's print queue and never makes it to my desktop.
The only thing that seems to fix this is if she restarts her laptop. Not a big deal but this problem is sort of annoying.
I don't know if this affects but the laptop is put into hibernate at night and I turn my desktop off at night.
Does anyone know why this happens and if there is something easy to do to fix the problem besides restart the computer?
EDIT: I was thinking that maybe my wife's laptop loses its connection to the printer. Is there a way to reset a connection to a shared printer? Or maybe reauth with the printer?
I have a new laptop that I use for both home and work. It runs windows 7 ultimate, and is joined to the domain at work. It is okay to use this laptop for both work and personal activities, and I even have an account set up on the local machine in addition to the work domain account specifically for this to help keep the two separate.
At home, I have a file server that I use to share files and printers with my wife's laptop, this new laptop, and my old desktop which will now become the family machine. My mp3 library is on there, among other things.
What I want to do is use the windows Offline Files feature to keep a synced copy of my music library on the laptop. That part is easy. What's tricky is that I want to share this offline cache between both the local account on the laptop and my work domain account. I could do them both separately, but then I have two copies of a very large music library stored locally. This also means twice the sync burden, when the domain account is rarely connected to the file share. I really want to be able to sync from the local machine account only, and have the domain account be able to use the synced files.
I know where the offline file cache is kept (\Windows\CSC) and I can find the cached files (not encrypted), but permissions on the cache are setup weird, and so using that cache directly is not trivial.
Any ideas appreciated.
Occasionally, like right at this moment, I cannot access my windows share from my mac.
Normally, it works, but every now and then, the computer name won't be displayed under SHARED in Finder. Rebooting the windows computer usually fixes this, but it's inconvenient. The Windows computer can see the Mac on the network.
Is there a method of asking finder to poll for windows shares again, or "forcing" finder to look for "desktop"? I'm looking for the equivalent of \desktop in the address bar of a Windows computer.
Thanks for the help.
Our office is using Google Apps for Domains for our email. Our customer support guys use IMAP clients (such as Thunderbird and Outlook) to check both their individual email addresses and a "collective" support email address. On the support account, there are several folders for organizing email threads by client. When a user gets a support-related email (either to the support email or their individual email address) they file away the email in one of thse shared folders.
Many of us greatly prefer the Gmail interface (with Folders4Gmail enabled on the Better Gmail 2 add-on for Firefox, for label-to-folder support) over Thunderbird or Outlook. However, there is no way to "share" email threads, complete with labels, between accounts.
The desired end result is that a user logs into their individual account and can see both their account and the support account and can pass emails (labels and all) between the two accounts - or at least from their individual account into the support account.
Any ideas?
What is the easiest way to create this setup:
WiFi internet router separate in one room.
Study room: Laptop with USB printer connected with wifi.
My room: Laptop connected with wifi.
I want to be able to print from the "My room" laptop to the "Study room" printer, and also share files between them.
What is the easiest way to do this? Note, the wireless router needs to be in a separate room for both laptops to be able to connect to it.
I've tried configuring homegroups and stuff to do with IP addresses that I found on the internet but have had no success.
I'm not an expert with PC's but I've tried hard so there is probably just some trick to do it. If someone can help that will be great.
Hi,
I use Palm Treo 750 running Windows mobile 6.1. I don't have GPRS on my mobile. But, I have Broadband connection in my laptop running Windows Vista.
How can I use the PC's internet connection to browse from mobile (either USB or bluetooth)?
I have done this in one of my previous Windows mobiles (Smart Phone 2003 SE).
Thanks in advance guys.

We have a Windows server, with Mac OS X 10.5 and 10.6 clients. On the server are some Automator workflows with custom icons stored in external resoruce fork files, like this:
foo.wflow
._foo.wflow
The custom icons are only visible to the 10.5 clients.
I need to set up a UNC share for my hosted dedicated server to access a share on itself. Unfortunately TFS requires a UNC share.
I am on a Windows Server 2008 Standard SP2 64bit dedicated server behind a PIX 501 firewall hosted with GoDaddy.
I just cannot get the server to access itself and get this error:
Windows cannot access \\SERVER\SHARE
Check the spelling of the name.. etc.
I've found numerous questions about this but no answer to my problem.
Server 2008 Standard x64 SP2
Workgroup - not domain
Windows Firewall is off
Computer browser service is on
I am trying to access \\MYMACHINE\TFS-BUILDS by typing in - or double clicking. Neither works.
Machine has single network card
Filesharing wizard says share was ok
Share was showing under 'Computer management'
Permissions are set to 'everyone' full control
No obvious errors in eventlog
Reboot didn't fix it
Unfortunately I cannot try to access other shares in or out of this machine because it is a hosted dedicated server and the only machine behind a hardware firewall.
The only thing left i can think of is that the hardware firewall needs to be configured. Is this possible?
Does 'UNC traffic' go out of the machine and then back in again?
Hello,
I have a Windows 2008 Server running the File Server Role and I would like to use mount points for my volumes instead of drive letters. However, I need to use the quota and file screening features of File Server Resource Manager, and it seems that they do not apply correctly to mount point folders. I am able to upload oversized files and excluded file types without any warnings.
Could someone help me with a fix or workaround for this issue?
Thanks,
Jamie
I have a local share with my vmware development server and I'm finding that when I create new files via osx, they are created under root instead of jacob.
Which is weird because when I do the connect to server thing I'm explicit about the user being jacob i.e.

Suggestions?
I work for a small company and would like to set up some sort of a collaborative tool so that team members can share thoughts, upload documents...something like sharepoint maybe, but not that suffisticated. Only good option I've seen so far is joomla CMS.
Just want to get an opinion of the community on which tools they have used for these purposes.
I know this is not programming related but I thought stackoverflow community would be good to get an opinion on this.
I have a computer with large hard disks running Gentoo. I have to serve med/big files via a wired network to Apple devices (all of them running OS X).
Which protocol is the best for the following needs ? :
Speed
Ease of use (by the clients and the server)
Less limited (max file size, limited charset for filenames)
Security
Is there a way to prevent Mac OS X creating .DS_Store and other hidden meta-files on foreign volumes like NTFS and FAT?
I share an NTFS partition with data like Thunderird & Firefox's profiles and apache's DocumentRoot, between Mac OS X and Windows, which is very handy.
I don't mind if Mac OS X is not capable of indexing or otherwise doing the neat things those metafiles are for.
Note: It's not shared over a network, both operating systems and the shared partition coexist on the same disk, on the same machine.
All,
I am trying to compile a list of common audio file formats used in both personal storage and peer transmission. I have compiled the following list, do you think that there are any significant formats missing? Are any of them not actually common formats? Any advice/alterations are highly useful.

I need to share files with clients outside of my business and unfortunately our FTP server is becoming too much of a hassle (with regards to clients use of an ftp client and creating password protected downloads based on customized account privileges) Essentially, I need:
a remote service that mimics an FTP
server with a web interface (easy for
basic internet users to comprehend).
over 100gb of storage
file transfer size over 2gb
customizable user account privileges
(password protected downloads)
secure storage and data transfer
preferably less then $100/mo
I have already looked into some services that almost meet my requirements (StreamFile.com, box.net, onehub.com, filesanywhere.com)- has anyone used a service they would recommend?
cheers,
jack
Hi,
I'm building a testsystem and want to use the servernames like in the productive environment.
For tcp-traffic i made an entry in the hosts-file but that seems not to work for fileservers (smb).
How may i define an Alias-Name like (\Filer) for my fileserver with IP:192.168.1.2 and Name \testshare in our test-domain?
Peace

I have an Archos 5 Internet tablet with Android.
I have been using it to stream video over my XP wifi network.
Yesterday the Archos stopped seeing any of my computers.
I have found some programs that allow me to see the network, so I know the hardware works.
However, this program does not allow me to pick the correct program to play the files I want.
I suspect the problem lies somewhere on the XP side.
This would probably work better if the Archos 5 allowed me to manually input the IP address.
Help?

I'm not a sysadmin, but I play one on TV: I'm trying to fix a problem for my mom's tiny non-profit company's server. I set up a Windows Server 2003 machine as a domain controller and file server. Everything has been working well for a few months, but lately when she tries to save changes to a Word (Office XP) document stored on the server, Word will intermittently report that the file is read-only. Saving to an alternate file in the same directory works, and when she closes Word and re-opens the original document, it'll save changes just fine. No one else ever has these files open.
I've checked security and share permissions, and everything's OK. We've tried rebooting the server, but the problem continues, but intermittently.
I have no clue what's going on. Help!
I have been having quite a bit of trouble getting my new Verizon 4G-LTE service running on a Windows 7 desktop. My desktop is on a LAN here at home with two other PC's. We all share printers, files, media, etc. Until yesterday, we also shared a Verizon 3G modem via a NetGear 3G broadband WAP. That isn't compatible with the 4G so now I am just trying to get the 4G modem working directly connected to one of the desktops. After some USB wrangling, it seems to work. Except, every 7-10 minutes the connection would drop.
After some time on the phone with a very nice Verizon technician, it seems to be staying up - it's been up for 20 minutes now.
He told me that my LAN was causing the 4G to drop. That traffic on my LAN, even though it is not destined for the internet (ICS not working yet) was causing the cell tower to detect an 'IP change' and a 'security violation' in my modem and drop my connection.
Is this Verizon's way of forbidding more than one computer to share a modem? I have my computer running now without a LAN connection and the 4G is still up. But this isn't practical.
Has anyone heard of this?
Today I installed Windows Phone 8 SDK from the official site. After installing and a couple of restarts (it restarted the PC to enable Hyper-V), I opened Connectify. I use Connectify Hotspot to connect my iPod to the internet as I have an ethernet connection and no wireless router.
The problem is that now, Connectify doesn't show WiFi in Share Over. The attached screenshot shows this.
Previously, before I installed the SDK, it would show Ethernet and Wi-Fi. I would select WiFi and share my internet. Now, this is completely screwed.
EDIT: I found out that the Microsoft Virtual Wi-Fi Miniport Driver has got disabled and I am not able to enable it again. Please advise.
Please advise on what to do

I have a Toshiba laptop with wi-fi connected internet. Now I wanna connect my phone to my laptop and use its Internet connection ( I can't buy new wi-fi or 3g supported mobile phone ). I have no problem connecting k610 to my laptop, and even shared my GPRS internet connection with my PC. but can't do contrary.
How can I connect my k610 mobile (which not support wi-fi connections) to Internet via my Toshiba laptop ( with bluetooth ) ?
P.S: My PC OS is Ubuntu Linux 9.10
We would like the Help Desk to have the responsibility of creating User Home folders instead of our 2nd level support.
The help desk global group is already an Account Operator, so in Active Directory they are able to edit all User Attributes just fine.
The problem is figuring out the minimum level of permissions needed on the File Server to create the home share, with out giving them access to everyone home share.
So if they open AD Users and Computer, open the properties for a user, and enter \home\users\%username% in the profile tab and then click OK, they get the following error.
The \home\users\username home folder was not created because you do not have create access on the server. The user account has been updated with the new home folder value but you must create the directory manually after obtaining the required access right.
Right now I have given the Helpdesk group Full Control on the root folder only (no files or subdirectories)
The directory is actually created, but the permissions on the newly created folder only show administrators full control, and no permissions for the configured user account.
It sure sounds like I'd have to make the helpdesk local admins on the file servers, which is what I'd like to avoid. Especially since the file servers are a large cluster hosting much much more than the entire orgs home share structure.
I have a x64 machine which needs "additional drivers" for x86 clients. The problem I have is I cannot get the proper .inf files so I can use them. Canon only provides an .exe file, which when extracted has other .exe files and some dll files.
I believe Canon changed their drivers, because I did have them extracted at one point, but sadly did not save them :(.
The drivers are available here. Hopefully I am clear in what I am trying to do. Canon provides the .exe file. The .exe file when extracted does not produce any .inf driver files.
Thanks!
