• Why would the boot screen be displayed on the external monitor?

  Why would the boot screen be displayed on the external monitor? This is not really a problem, I'd just like to know the reason behind this. If I boot without an external monitor both the BIOS settings and the boot screen are displayed on the built-in LCD monitor. However, when I boot with a monitor attached, the boot screen and the BIOS settings are displayed on the external monitor. There isn't any setting available regarding this in the BIOS setup (as opposed to my Thinkpad T42 where there is an option regarding this). • CentOS 6.5 proxy bypass/no_proxy not working

  I am running CentOS 6.5 on my desktop. I've set the Network Proxy using the network proxy application provided under Preferences. I've also set the following exceptions: localhost,127.0.0.0/8,172.16.0.0/12,192.168.0.0./16 But whenever I am using wget (I'm testing the proxy settings using using wget) then wget tries to connect to the proxy for private addresses, but wget localhost works fine and doesn't use the proxy. I also removed all the proxy settings and set the proxy in the shell: export http_proxy="<proxy_url>:<port>" export https_proxy="<proxy_url>:<port>" export no_proxy="localhost,127.0.0.0/8,172.16.0.0/12,192.168.0.0./16" It work when I use the command wget <external_url> or wget localhost but fails when I use the command wget <private address from the $no_proxy variable>. I also tried setting the variables in Ubuntu 14.04 also and facing the same issue. Regards,

• Server 2008 Web Edition IIS6 SMTP conflict

  I'm using IIS6 Manager to setup the SMTP service on Windows Server 2008 Web Edition. There seems to be a conflict (port 25?) which means that I cannot start and stop the Default SMTP server within IIS6. I can start and stop it with the services.msc snap in and this is reflected in state of the SMTP server in IIS6 manager. I'm worried that none of the settings I want to get at within IIS6 (logging, authentication etc..) are having any effect. None of these settings are available within IIS7 in Web Edition.

  I am using Fantacy Remote to remote view other machines. I have attached the default .INI file that Fantacy Remote uses. When i connect to a machine, the client user should not have mouse and keyboard access of the Remote machine. It should be a View only remote connection. And i want to make the Remote viewer screen to be in full screen mode, because i dont want the user to do anything with menubars of Fatancy remote. Because this is kiosk application. • Virtual PC and hardware-assisted virtualization (VT-x) problem

  I've installed Microsoft's Virtual PC on Windows 7, but when I try to start a virtual machine I get the following error message: '<Virtual machine name' could not be started because hardware-assisted virtualization is disabled. Please enable hardware virtualization in the BIOS settings and try again. If hardware virtualization settings is already enabled, you may have to disable Trusted Execution Technology (TXT) setting in BIOS or update the system BIOS. However, if I download and run the Hardware-Assisted Virtualization Detection Tool, it gives the following positive message: This computer is configured with hardware-assisted virtualization. This computer meets the processor requirements to run Windows Virtual PC. If this computer runs a supported edition of Windows® 7, you can install Windows Virtual PC. I've also used the MSR Walker in the third-party utility CrystalCPUID to examine MSR 0x3a on both processors on my system, and it's 0x5 (0x4 = VT enabled, 0x1 = VT lock), as expected. Does anyone have any ideas of what else to check? Thanks.

• Safari MAC proxy bypass for IPv6

  I'm a first-time n00b on Mac ; (but have been doing computers since before PC's). This Mac has 2 VLANs, vlan0 in IPv4, vlan1 in IPv6. Safari can surf via IPv4 squid proxy OK. Safari can surf via IPv6 natively, if I switch off the proxy, OK. How do I set up the Settings - Network - Interface - Advanced - Proxies to "bypass" IPv6 ? Current Settings include variations along the lines of ... "*.local, 10.0.0.0/8, 192.168.0.0/16, 172.16.0.0/12 , ::, ipv6 " but don't work as expected. I want Safari to go out on its own with IPv6, not crash at the proxy with "malformed URL" Thanks, //rhi

  Hello, I'm puzzled by this email message that gets quarantined by McAfee Secure Messaging Service (it's based on Postini) for no reason that I can think of. • Implications of allowing Windows clients to use NTLMv1?

  I have a web application that I'd like to authenticate to using pass-through NTLM for SSO. There is a problem, however, in that NTLMv2 apparently will not work in this scenario (without the application storing an identical password hash). I enabled NTLMv1 on one client machine (Vista) using its local group policy: Computer-Windows Settings-Security Settings-Network Security: LAN Manager authentication level. I changed it to Send LM & NTLM - use NTLMv2 session security if negotiated. This worked, and I'm able to login to the web application using NTLM. Now this application would be used by all of my client machines... so I'm wondering what the security risks are if I was push this policy out to all of them (not to the domain controller itself though)?

  I have migrated my sitecollection(migsitecollection) to different farm using content deployment job. http://vsmoss/sites/migsitecollection I used collaboration portal to create it.Its working fine from where I migrated it but after running content deployment jobs my new migrated site global navigation settings are not getting saved when I am trying ot change them by going in settings-Navigation and in logs I can see this error The SPNavigation store is likely corrupt. I saw on net the solution for this problem is changing onet.xml and running script on sql database for the site, I am eager to better answer than this but if its the same I have few doubts on it: First,As my site template is not customised its the collobartion portal so I am not sure where exactly to change the onet.xml. Second, I am using the same database as of my webapplication running that script would not affect anything else on the main site of mine?

• Why does a group policy not applied to the domain administrator account?

  I have a working policy on my entire domain. I just found out, when logging with the domain administrator, that this policy is not applied (EDIT: Running : gpresult shows that the GPO's are applied - but, this GPO is for Drive Mappings, and the actual drive mappings are NOT shown) The administrator account - does not have any login script on his profile tab. My GPO's are mainly small/atomic settings: single GPO to handle each settings: UAC, Firewall, printers. GPO status for the object is enabled That's an overview of the Drive Maps: Reading on MS support site, I checked the delegation tab, and it is marked as applied to domain and enterprise admins. Every user gets these policies correctly. The OU that is set is the root of the domain. (for testing purpose - I did that to eliminate hierarchy issues - did not help) Block Inheritance is disabled. • HP DL180 G6 P410 8x SATA 1TB, what is the optimal configuration?

  I have a HP DL180 G6 with a P410 raid controller. Presently this runs using 4x 1TB Samsung Spinpoint SATA drives, in a RAID10 configuration using default settings. I am about to add a backplane to increase the drive capacity from 4 to 12 drives, and I plan to install 4 more 1TB SATA Drives. The drives are matched and have close serial numbers (They arrived together in the Manufacturers pallet). Model HD103UJ 1000GB/7200rpm/32M Rated for 3GB/s I will also be installing RHEL 6.1 x86_64. My question is what would be the optimal RAID settings (stripe etc.) for this configuration? To recap: 8x Model HD103UJ 1000GB/7200rpm/32M Rated for 3GB/s RAID 10 configuration. Thanks in advance. • DNS server at router level vs. computer level

  I've three questions. Is it better/faster/optimal to set up your server's preferred and alternate DNS servers in your OS's network settings or in your router settings? Will it cause problems if it is set up in both places, both pointing to the same IPs? I am running Windows and I have my network assign a static IP to one of my computers. This doesn't allow me to obtain the DNS server addresses from my router automatically. Is there an IP I can put in that will cause it to take the DNS server addresses from the router?

• Remote desktop logs in with saved credentials when connecting from one computer but asks for username and password from another.

  I have two computers on which I recently installed windows 7 64 bit. Using VPN, they connect to remote network on which there is a Windows Server 2000 SP4 computer. User is supposed to connect to server using remote desktop. I set same VPN and remote desktop settings on both computers with Windows 7. I set Remote desktop to save connection credentials on both computers, but when I connect to server form one computer, it uses saved credentials and I don't get log-in prompt on server side. On the other computer with same settings using same username and password, I get log-in prompt once the remote desktop connects to server. I even tried copying the .rdp file from the computer on which everything is working fine to the other computer, but that didn't help. Note that I'm not trying to have both computers connected at the same time. What is causing this and how do I make the other computer skip windows server 2000 log-in prompt.

When booting the machine the start menu appears originally on the primary screen as it should. I installed all the network manager packages, including the gnome client. I understand I need to add the "Notification Area" to the panel, which I have done. I checked that the NetworkManager is running: nate@nate-desktop:~$ service network-manager status network-manager start/running, process 763 In /etc/NetworkManager/nm-system-settings.conf, I have added managed=true (don't know if this matters, but I saw it suggested on one forum): nate@nate-desktop:~$ more /etc/NetworkManager/nm-system-settings.conf # This file is installed into /etc/NetworkManager, and is loaded by # NetworkManager by default. To override, specify: '--config file' # during NM startup. • Mouse for a lefty?

  As a programmer, I'm fairly particular about my keyboard and mouse. One thing I've only recently noticed is that the mice I tend to prefer don't work well for my five-year-old. He's left-handed, but ends up mousing with his right hand on the computer because (a) that's where the mouse is, and (b) most mice are designed for right-handed people anyway. So, a couple of questions: If you're left-handed and you mouse with your left hand, do you have any recommendations on good mice? If you have a lefty in your household (whether or not it's you), is there an easy way to swap settings between left-handed and right-handed mouse buttons? One way is Control Panel Mouse Check the box on the first tab OK. Do you know of anything faster? Or, better yet, what I'd really like is a way to reverse those settings on only one particular mouse, which would be designated as my son's mouse.

  I'm reconfiguring roaming profiles on my network to use proper NTFS security settings according to this article. I have reset the following permissions on the roaming profile parent folder: CREATOR OWNER, Full Control, Subfolder and files only User group with profiles, List folder, Create folders, This folder only System, Full Control, This folder, subfolders, and files Then I select one of the actual roaming profile folders and follow these steps to fix the NTFS settings: Click Security, Advanced Uncheck "Allow inheritable permissions..." Choose "Remove..." Recheck "Allow inheritable permissions..." Click "Apply" After I choose apply, I get the following permissions listed on the roaming profile folder: Administrators (MYDOMAIN\Administrators) Full Control, This folder only CREATOR OWNER, Full Control, Subfolders and files only System, Full Control, This folder, subfolders, and files Where is the Administrators entry coming from!? There is an entry on the root of the drive for Administrators to have full control, but the Roaming Profile Parent folder is not set to inherit any permissions, and it does not have the administrators permission.

  I use IE7 & IE8 disk images from microsoft and Virtual Box to test my websites in IE. One day I stopped being able to connect to the internet with virtual box, seemingly after trying to alter proxy related settings to view Hulu.com outside of the U.S... I don't know whether it's coincidence or not. Anyway, I am using the 'PCnet-FAST III (NAT)' adapter with virtual box. Can you guys help me troubleshoot this issue? Just changing one parameter of the GPO for example "Enforced password history", brings back this error. Here's our server configuration : Windows Server 2008 R2 Exchange Server 2010 Version: 14.00.0722.000 If anybody has a clue it would very helpful !

• Migration of egroupware from one Ubuntu server to another

  I am new to server administration and have been attempting to migrate from one Ubuntu server to another for 4 days now. I am having a problem with migration of egroupware settings. Specifically, I need to find where knowledgebase saves the files on the local machine. I have the database set correctly and its using the previous settings. However, articles in knowledgebase are not showing images associated with them. I have tried everything to find the file on the old server that stores data files uploaded to the knowlegebase but I cannot. If there is another way to import these files, or if someone knows where they are saved, I would really appreciate the help. -Chris

• Why does iis produce 500 response on all requests?

  In IIS 7.5 on Windows webserver 2008 I get a 500 response on any request. Checking in firebug if I'm being forwarded but the request is made and no forwarding, just get 500 response with a page that looks like Symfony response page. Disabled all url re writes and requested index.html (still get 500) checked error pages under featured settings and detailed errors is checked. Checked the php error log and no writes have been made for several days. I think someone has fiddled with the IIS server settings and got it to return 500 for any request (even locally) but I'm not able to find what it is. [UPDATE] While I was writing this and listing things I've tried I tried selecting detailed error messages at the root node, not the site node. Looks like some idiot changed file permissions so that IIS can no longer read the config file.

• Recompile PHP *nix

  Hello everyone, I'm a total newb to *nix in all forms so assume I know nothing about it. I've been trying to use a php function set called "ZipArchive". It says I need to recompile php with the --enable-zip option. Now "recompile php" scares me. Does that re-install it!? Does it clear all previous settings so if I do this then any settings done prior will be wiped? Or is there a way to add on this one option? Seems a bit much for a re-installation to add a model when on a windows server it is just add a line to the .ini file :\ Many thanks to anyone who can clear up this matter for me :)
