  • Alienware m15x (older model) BSOD investigation

    A frined of mine asked me to help him with an Alienware m15x laptop that had a little service history. It was bought in june 2008, serviced in january 2009 for a random fps drop problem, Alienware returned it saying nothing was wrong. The laptop still had hiccups, but after juggling a few drivers and settings, the fps drops weren't as noticeable. Eventually it died in Sept. 2009. It would not boot up locking itself on a white/gray screen. (i think it was overheating .. clocking in 100 degrees Celsius). So back to Alienware it went. They replaced the GPU and all was fine. Up until these blue screens started showing up. One other thing that was updated was the HDD and a Windows 7 reinstall, in August. From then on it seems to have started its BSOD. Could this be the culprit? Why? 0_o The original Windows was Vista but it was upgraded with a digital download/purchase of Windows 7 Home Premium and activated after installing windows. No errors on the old HDD, just on the latest installation. LE:Due note that now the old HDD is used to see if issues re-occur. So please, I am in need of someone who can interpret these windows dump files: Minidump I may have come to some conflicting conclusions. So if someone can clarify each dump/date and the probable cause/error it had; and a final conclusion or solution, we would be very grateful.   • Linux Best Practices

    I'm a life-long Windows developer switching over to Linux for the first time, and I'm starting off with Ubuntu to ease the learning curve. My new laptop will primarily be a development machine: 6GB RAM, 320 GB HD. I'd like there to be 2 non-root users: (a) Development, which will always be me, and (b) Guest, for anyone else. I assume the root user is added by default, like System Administrator in Windows. (1) I'd like to mount /home to its own partition, but how does this work if I have two user accounts (Development and Guest)? Are there 2 separate /home directories, or do they get shared? Is it possible to allocate more space for Development and only a tiny bit of space for Guest in GRUB2? How?!?! (2) I'm assuming that its okay that all of my development tools (Eclipse & plugins, SVN, JUnit, ant, etc.) and Java will end up getting installed in non-/home directories such as /usr and /opt, but that my Eclipse/SVN workspace will live under my /home directory on a separate partition... any problems, issues, concerns with that? (3) As far as partitioning schemes, nothing too complicated, but not plain Jane either: Boot Partition, 512 MB, in case I want to install other OSes Ubuntu & non-/home file system, 187.5 GB Swap Partition, 12 GB = RAM x 2 /home Partition, 120 GB I don't have any bulky media data (I don't have music or video libraries, this is a lean and mean dev machine) so having 320 GB is like winning the lottery and not knowing what to do with all this space. I figured I'd give a little extra space to the OS/FS partition since I'll be running JEE containers locally and doing a lot of file IO, logging and other memory-instensive operations. Any issues, problems, concerns, suggestions? (4) I was thinking about using ext4; seems to have good filestamping without any space ceiling for me to hit. Any other suggestions for a dev machine? (5) I read somewhere that you need to be careful when you install software as the root user, but I can't remember why. What general caveats do I need to be aware of when doing things (installing packages, making system configurations, etc.) as root vs "Development" user? Thanks!

    i hope someone can help me out with somewhat simple task. I'm trying to redirect a client in my router through my desktop PC, so i can dump the traffic and analyze it (its potential source of poisoning the network with malicious packets). However i don't have a second NIC on my hands and i was hoping i can redirect all the traffic from that IP through my PC. In essence to become MITM for the client. Does anyone have any idea where to start: Current state: (localip)-(router)-(internet) And what i want to do: (localip)-(pc)-(router)-(internet)

  • is ROBOCOPY a good form of backup as a tool?

    seeing how it does not do a write verify unless scripted (or is it needed?) is it a decent option to dump a few folders to another server? i am just worried about whether the data, after being copied, might be corrupted but you would not be aware of it being buggy? i have used it in the past without issue but am seeking feedback in case i missed something obvious.

    I recently switched to using a Git repository within Eclipse (Juno SR2), using EGit. In our project, some file names contains umlauts and other special non-ASCII-characters. On the command line, git status show no changes, workspace clean, but Eclipse marks those files as changed: How can I make Eclipse/EGit use the correct encoding for filenames? I tried setting LANG, file.encoding and the git config svn.pathnameencoding all to no avail. And again, on the command line there are no such errors.

These must be installed manually for use by vSphere CLI: UUID 0.03 or newer I tried to do sudo yum install uuid-perl and also sudo yum install perl-SOAP-Lite perl-Data-Dump perl-Class-MethodMaker perl-Crypt-SSLeay perl-libxml-perl perl-XML-LibXML-Common but this doesn't help. What else can I try to do?

    In which location and file does Firefox save the last windows I had opened (when Firefox crashed)? I have a complete "hot dump" copy of a file system and need to restore the state Firefox was when the system crashed, but I cannot restore the full backup itself. I can only extract the files of Firefox, but I do not know in which files I have to search for the urls that were last opened when the snapshot of the whole file system was done.

    I want to manage several SVN repositories for a particular vhost in my system. I want those to be owned by a particular user in the system and not by wwwrun/www. The other websites hosted by Apache should be regularly executed by the unprivileged wwwrun/www user. I'm using worker. How can I tell Apache that every request for a specific vhost must be served impersonating a specific user like I would do in IIS? (This will also come useful when running FUDforum)

    I'm doing a word search using the following command: find . -exec grep -q [some_word] '{}' \; -print -o -name .svn -prune -o -name .ssh -prune -o -name .boneyard -o -name log -prune -prune -o -name tmp -prune Is it possible to use a regex to exclude all hidden directories? Note: The current command traverses the entire tree from the current location and exclude those being pruned. The exclusion needs to work for any hidden directory regardless off location.
