  • Enforcing Constraints Upon Data Documents of Various Formats

    This seems like the sort of problem that must have been solved elegantly long ago, but I haven't the foggiest how to google it and find it. Suppose you're maintaining a large legacy system, which has a large collection of data (tens of GB) of various formats, including XML and two different internal configuration formats. Suppose further that there are abstract rules governing the values these files may or may not contain. EXAMPLE: File A defines the raw, mathematical data pertaining to the aerodynamics of a car for consumption of the physics component of the system. File B contains certain values from File A in an easily accessible, XML hierarchy for consumption of a different component of the system. There exists, therefore, an abstract rule (or constraint) such that the values from File B must match the values from File A. This is probably the simplest constraint that can be specified, but in practice, the constraints between files can become very complicated indeed. What is the best method for managing these constraints between files of arbitrary formats, short of migrating it over to an RDBMS (which simply isn't feasible for the foreseeable future)? Has this problem been solved already?   • Why not XHTML5?

    So, HTML5 is the Big Step Forward, I'm told. The last step forward we took that I'm aware of was the introduction of XHTML. The advantages were obvious: simplicity, strictness, the ability to use standard XML parsers and generators to work with web pages, and so on. How strange and frustrating, then, that HTML5 rolls all that back: once again we're working with a non-standard syntax; once again, we have to deal with historical baggage and parsing complexity; once again we can't use our standard XML libraries, parsers, generators, or transformers; and all the advantages introduced by XML (extensibility, namespaces, standardization, and so on), that the W3C spent a decade pushing for good reasons, are lost. Fine, we have XHTML5, but it seems like it has not gained popularity like the HTML5 encoding has. See this SO question, for example. Even the HTML5 specification says that HTML5, not XHTML5, "is the format suggested for most authors." Do I have my facts wrong? Otherwise, why am I the only one that feels this way? Why are people choosing HTML5 over XHTML5?

  • Encoding in Scene Builder

    I generate an FXML file with Scene Builder. I need it to contain some cirillic text. When i edit this file with Scene Builder i can see normal cirillic letters (screen 1) After compileing and running my program with this FXML file, i'll see not cirillic letters, but some artefacts (screen 2) But, as you can see on the screen 3, its xml file encoding is UTF-8. Also, you can see there that it is saved in ANSI. I've tried to open it with other editors (default eclipse and sublime text 2) and they shoen wrong encoding either. (screen 4 and screen 5) At first i've tried to convert it from ansi to utf-8 (with notepad++). After that eclipse and sublime text 2 started display cirillic letters as they must be. But. Scene builder gave an error, when i've tried to open this file with it: Error loading file C:\eclipse\workspace\equification\src\main\java\ru\igs\ava\equification\test.fxml.   • How do I edit an XML file with Perl?

    I have a movie collection catalogue with local links to folders and files for an easy access. Recently I reorganaized my entire hard disk space and I need to update the links and I'm trying to do that automatically with Perl. I can export the data in a XML file and import it again. I can extract the new filepaths with the use of File::Find but I'm stuck with two problems. I have no idea how to connect the $title from the new filepath with the corresponding $title from the XML file. I'm dealing with such files for the first time and I don't know how to proceed with the replacement process.   • Doing XML extracts with XSLT without having to read the whole DOM tree into memory?

    I have a situation where I want to extract some information from some very large but regular XML files (just had to do it with a 500 Mb file), and where XSLT would be perfect. Unfortunately those XSLT implementations I am aware of (except the most expensive version of Saxon) does not support only having the necessary part of the DOM read in but reads in the whole tree. This cause the computer to swap to death. The XPath in question is //m/e[contains(.,'foobar') so it is essentially just a grep. Is there an XSLT implementation which can do this? Or an XSLT implementation which given suitable "advice" can do this trick of pruning away the parts in memory which will not be needed again? I'd prefer a Java implementation but both Windows and Linux are viable native platforms. EDIT: It appears that STX may be what I am looking for (I can live with another transformation language), and that Joost is an implementation hereof. Any experiences? EDIT: I found that Saxon 6.5.4 with -Xmx1500m could load my XML, so this allowed me to use my XPaths right now. This is just a lucky stroke so I'd still like to solve this generically - this means scriptable which in turn means no handcrafted Java filtering first. EDIT: Oh, by the way. This is a log file very similar to what is generated by the log4j XMLLayout. The reason for XML is to be able to do exactly this, namely do queries on the log. This is the initial try, hence the simple question. Later I'd like to be able to ask more complex questions - therefore I'd like the query language to be able to handle the input file.

  • VS 2010 SP1 BETA – App.config XML Transformation Fix

    The current version for App.config XML tranformations as described in a previous post does not support the SP1 BETA version of Visual Studio. I did some quick tests and decided to provide a different version with a compatibility fix for those already experimenting with the beta release of the service pack. This is a quick workaround to the build errors I found when using the transformations in SP1 beta and is pretty much untested since I’ll wait for the final release of the service pack to take a closer look to any possible problems.     I have created a SQL Server Reporting Services Report Builder 3 report that contains a list of several items from a SharePoint list. I would like the list on the report to be a numbered list, so that when exported to Word, if a user adds another item to the document, the numbering is updated automatically. I can simulate a numbered list by creating a table and using 'RowNumber' in one of the columns, however this does not get rendered as a true numbered list. Is there any way to create a true numbered list in Report Builder 3

    I'm using Selenium to unit test my Perl cgi script and all works fine except in one case where my cgi script returns XML content to the web browser instead of returning HTML content. I'm new to Selenium and only pasted in their sample script to get started, but I can't seem to find a Selenium command in any of the documentation that will recognize that my XML response has been returned. The Selenium commands seem to assume that an HTML page is always being returned.

  • LINQ to XML, a problem conceptualizing how the tree should look.

    Have you ever had one of those days when you've dug a hole but your so deep in now that the only option is to keep on digging and see where you come out? I thought just for giggles in the latest component I'm writing to use LINQ to XML because it was about time I saw what all the hooplah was about. The problem: I am making a graph component that contains series of data that get graphed and then you can apply a formula to that series and graph another series then apply a formula to that series and so on. So I figured that I would do so in 2 steps, create (and manage) an XML representaion of the series and how they relate to each other, then pass this xml to a draw engine which draws. Conceptually its a tree, with the exception of the root all child series being based upon a parent (1 parent can have many children. So I should always be adding child nodes to their parent and if I delete a node(series) then I can simply delete the series and its descendants (then draw) and voila all the messy iterating through each node finding parents and children is unneccessary. Trouble is I dont know how to represent this tree in XML i.e. the structure. My first attempt saw me programatically adding each series as siblings, which worked like a treat because I ended up with an ordered list and thus my order of rendering was maintained. I had this <Chart> <Series id="1">seriesText1</Series> <Series id="2">seriesText2</Series> <Series id="3">seriesText3</Series> <Series id="4">seriesText4</Series> </Chart> I'm in a muddle now ... how can I represent a series and a series that has children series. If some-one can give me a hint to how my tree should look (perhaps with a snippet on how to programatically add nodes to their parents) All the examples I have read usually have some container elements such as <ContactS> or <BookS> but my head says I have <series> some of them parent some of them children. Would appreciate a nudge in the right direction.
