  • Grub os-probe showing deleted Windows installation

    I recently purchased a Dell Vostro notebook with Ubuntu Netbook edition 10.04 pre-installed. I tried adding a partition and installed Windows XP but it didn't work out due to too many partitions in the system already. Now I have restored the laptop to factory setting using Dell Utility partition and the Windows partition is completely deleted, however my grub2 still shows Windows on /dev/sda2 sudo os-probe Microsoft Windows XP Professional (on /dev/sda2) Any ideas how to remove it from grub? I know I can remove /etc/grub.d/30_os-probe but I am more interested in why os-probe is showing the deleted partition.

    I know that there's a Ubuntu-specific StackExchange website, but I thought that I'd ask here because it's a server-specific question. If I'm wrong in my logic... Well, you people are better at this than I am! O=) On with the show! I'm in the process of installing Oracle Database 11g R2 Standard Edition onto Ubuntu Server 11.10. I found a guide on the Oracle Support Forums that walks you through the process fairly easily. Unfortunately, I'm running into issues installing one particular dependency: slapd.   • Cut (smart edit) .mts (AVCHD Progressive) files un Ubuntu Lucid

    I have a bunch of .mts files containing AVCHD Progressive video recorded by a Panasonic camera, and I need software on Ubuntu Lucid with which I can remove the boring parts, and concatenate the interesting parts, all this without reencoding the video stream. It's OK for me to cut at keyframe boundary. If Avidemux was able to open the files, it would take about 60 hours of work for me to cut the files. (At least that was it last time I tried with similar videos, but of a file format supported by Avidemux.) So I need a fast, powerful and stable video editor, because I don't want that 60 hours of work go up to 240 or even 480 hours just because the tool is too slow or unstable or has a terrible UI. I've tried Avidemux 2.5.5 and 2.5.6, but they crash trying to open such a file, even if I convert the file to .avi first using mencoder -oac copy -ovc copy. mplayer can play the files. I've tried Avidemux 2.6.0, which can open the file, but it cannot jump to the previous or next keyframe etc. (if I make it jump to the next keyframe, and then to the previous keyframe, it doesn't end up at the original keyframe, sometimes displays an error etc.). Also I'm not sure if Avidemux 2.6.x would let me save the result without reencoding. I've tried Kdenlive 0.7.7.1, but playback is very choppy, and it cannot play audio at all (complaining that SDL cannot find the device; but many other programs on the system can play audio). It would be a pain to work with. I've tried converting the .mts file to .mkv using ffmpeg -i input.mts -vcodec copy -sameq -acodec copy -f matroska output.mkv, but that caused too much visible distortions in the video in both mplayer and Avidemux. I've tried converting the .mts file with TsRemux.exe, but Avidemux 2.5.x still can't open that file. Is there another program to cut and concatenate the files? Is there a preprocessor which would create a file (without reencoding the video) on which Avidemux wouldn't crash?

    I recently installed openvpn and things were working. But I got a weird screen after a few hours and on restart my wired and wireless connections are not working. I tried both wired and wireless and both are not working. Usually if I ever have a problem with wireless, the wired always work! My /etc/network/interfaces is looking wrong. Can you please send me yours? I am using ubuntu 9.10 and the internet was working correctly until today! Please help

  • Ubuntu 10.04 boot splash screen and themes broken

    I recently upgraded to the release candidate of Ubuntu 10.04. Since then, two problems have occurred and persisted: the boot splash screen has reduced down to a black screen with random color blocks/text/gibberish at the top; and the themes are broken, as in the light themes have checkboxes in menus the same color as the background, and the dark themes don't correctly change the font colors in the top menu. Help? On a side note, is there a need to upgrade from 10.04 RC to LTS?

    After an kernel update Ubuntu doesn't show my wireless device. How can I fix this?     Hello folks, Several days ago, I installed Ubuntu 9.10 onto my Acer Aspire 3100 laptop, running it alongside Widows Vista as a dual-bootable system. Creation of the Ubuntu boot CD went fine, and the installation onto my hard drive was flawless. Ubuntu opens and behaves as I would expect, except for one little problem. For reasons unknown to me, Ubuntu is not communicating with my laptop's networking hardware, and I have no internet connectivity, it works fine under Windows Vista. Up in the right side of the Ubuntu desktop, I click on the network icon and it does not show a wireless connection at all. At home, where I use a dialup modem, I also see no means of getting online. My modem is an HDAUDIO Soft Data Fax Modem with Smart CP,manufactured by CXT (Conexant Systems Inc., file version 4.0.13.0, and the driver version is 7.58.0.0). I am an advanced computer user, but I am not a programmer. I seek a solution that is user-friendly for normal people, something equivalent to a driver that I can easily install or activate that will allow Ubuntu to see my hardware and get me connected. Can anyone help me over this hopefully-little glitch My processor is a Mobile AMD Sempron Processor 3500+ at 1.80 GHz, 1.50 GB RAM, and a 32-bit Operating System.

When I want to install it on a single partition (normally) and when it told me to chose a partition I don't find any partition (entire disk) . I have 2 primary partitions and 3 logical partitions.     I have MySQL installed on Ubuntu 11.10. I has been working fine for months but yesterday I started getting the following message ERROR 2002 (HY000): Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/run/mysqld/mysqld.sock' (2) and cannot get rid of it. I tried /etc/init.d/mysqld start and got bash: /etc/init.d/mysqld: No such file or directory The /etc/init.d/ directory contains mysql but not mysqld. I tried sudo service mysql restart It just hung for about half an hour and then I ctrl-C-ed it. I then tried sudo service mysql start I got mysql start/running But when I tried mysql I got ERROR 2002 (HY000): Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/run/mysqld/mysqld.sock' (2) I tried ps aux|grep mysql and got peter 17754 0.0 0.0 4196 768 pts/1 S+ 09:38 0:00 grep --color=auto mysql I ideas about fixing this problem would be most appreciated.

    I have samba setup on a fedora 13 machine, and I use it to share with my xbmc client in the family room. When I set this up there no password or anything was required I merely entered in paths such as: smb://<host>/<share> and all worked. Now on my ubuntu 10.04 machine when I try to access the same hosts, for example through smbmount though I receive an error. smbmount //media/Music ~/Music/ # media is in my /etc/hosts and resolves to # correct IP address for the machine I receive error: operation not permitted after pressing enter when it prompts for password.   • Cannot acess the new cloned server even after new IP address assignment

    I was able to clone a Ubuntu 10.04 server residing in Cloud. It appeared that I was not getting some IP for the new VM so I followed some of these: # cd /etc/udev/rules.d # cp 70-persistent-net.rules /root/ # rm 70-persistent-net.rules # reboot I didn't follow the later commands as I was unable to see two eth MACs as available in the referenced site. After this I am able to see some the IP for it, and is different form the original IP, I have added new IP to DNS server. Now when I try to access it with its assigned(new) domain it is directed to the old server. I can see both the VMs running with different IP. Where I might have gone wrong, I am new to this admin thing.

  • After upgrade to Lucid, computer doesn't respond to clicks or pressed keys until X restart

    I upgraded to Lucid today, and after the update the display is "frozen". I can move the cursor, but I cannot click on anything, nor does it respond to any keys. The only way to fix it is to SSH into the machine (which, by the way, works just fine), and kill and start X. Then I'm taken back to the login screen and everything works. This happens every time I boot. Let me know if there are more details that I can provide.

  • How do I restore the default applets to Gnome's notification area?

    I have a fresh install of Karmic Koala. In a botched attempt at trying to change my default window manager, I somehow removed at least three applets from the notification area: network manager (nm-applet), volume control (gnome-volume-control-applet), and the battery meter (???). Now if I logout and back in, these applets don't run, but I can start them from the command line. Because it's a fresh install, I completely removed my luser account and home directory. After recreating my account, I was frustrated to find that the applets are still missing and no obvious way to add them back. How can I restore the default configuration?

    Today I downloaded the Ubuntu 10.04 x64 .iso but when trying it out in live cd the keyboard of both my laptop and a microsoft branded one didn't work. I was planning into installing Ubuntu in a partition but I couldn't even put my info in the installation process to do it. Is this a problem with the .iso or the driver? because I'm afraid that if I can actually go ahead with the installation then the keyboard won't work after that too.
