• Azure price through Unit Testing

  For I project I am trying to find a way to measure an estimation of the costs of an Azure application through Unit Testing. Likely I will extend the Visual Studio Unit Testing framework (or another solution is also possible as long as it can run together (same time/side by side, when the Visual Studio Framework will run some tests the Azure solution must also run (if it is an Azure project)) with the Visual Studio Testing framework. A (Visual Studio) extension will be build to reuse it for future projects. Does anyone has any experience or any ideas how this can be achieved? Thanks in advance

• How can I get Gnome3 to remember my session?

  I am running Gnome3, but I had the same problem with Unity, on Ubuntu 12.04. I have a fairly elaborate setup I enjoy using day-to-day. A LibreOffice spreadsheet with everyone's extension numbers; a window with reference data I use regularly; two mulit-tabbed Konsole/Terminal windows with several remote systems sessions, firefox with a set of open tabs, and so on. But whenever I log out, when I return, I must set up everything from scratch. I remember the good 'ol days, when I rebooted, I'd re-log in, and all my windows came back up in the same places as they were when I logged out, and my Konsole/Term would come up with the same remote logins as before.... I'd have to re -setup some of my programs, but that's better than having to move every win into place, and resize them, etc. How do I get this functionality back?

• All tweak settings not saving?

  I am running Ubuntu GNOME 14.04. After the last 2 updates, all settings in the Tweak menu are no saving. It will also not switch to the Gnome Dark theme at all. This includes all Startup Application changes as well as any changes to Extension settings. I'm not sure if I need to include any sort of log records or anything like that, so if you need any more information please ask. I've noticed the default fonts seem to be different. I don't remember that being part of the theme settings. It's almost like I'm running in Safe Mode.

• Is there a program to manage movies and TV shows that supports mp4 tags?

  I'm looking for a media manager that will display and play movies and TV shows and will read data included in mp4 and m4v files. So far I've looked at XBMC, Moovida and Boxee and all of these seem to keep their own separate database or XML files for reading and storing tag information. I also looked at Banshee because of this answer, but it didn't read my tags. Banshee is also geared towards music videos instead of actual movies and TV shows. So I'm looking for software that Displays and plays movies and TV Shows Reads mp4 and m4v tags Preferably something with bulk import (i.e., I don't want to add 1,000 items to a new library) Bonus if it also has a tag editor Bonus if it's an XBMC extension

• Stumbling Through: Visual Studio 2010 (Part II)

  I would now like to expand a little on what I stumbled through in part I of my Visual Studio 2010 post and touch on a few other features of VS 2010.  Specifically, I want to generate some code based off of an Entity Framework model and tie it up to an actual data source.  Im not going to take the easy way and tie to a SQL Server data source, though, I will tie it to an XML data file instead.  Why?  Well, why not?  This is purely for learning, there are probably much better ways to get strongly-typed classes around XML but it will force us to go down a path less travelled and maybe learn a few things along the way.  Once we get this XML data and the means to interact with it, I will revisit data binding to this data in a WPF form and see if I cant get reading, adding, deleting, and updating working smoothly with minimal code.  To begin, I will use what was learned in the first part of this blog topic and draw out a data model for the MFL (My Football League) - I dont want the NFL to come down and sue me for using their name in this totally football-related article.  The data model looks as follows, with Teams having Players, and Players having a position and statistics for each season they played: Note that when making the associations between these entities, I was given the option to create the foreign key but I only chose to select this option for the association between Player and Position.  The reason for this is that I am picturing the XML that will contain this data to look somewhat like this: <MFL> <Position/> <Position/> <Position/> <Team>     <Player>         <Statistic/>     </Player> </Team> </MFL> Statistic will be under its associated Player node, and Player will be under its associated Team node no need to have an Id to reference it if we know it will always fall under its parent.  Position, however, is more of a lookup value that will not have any hierarchical relationship to the player.  In fact, the Position data itself may be in a completely different xml file (something Id like to play around with), so in any case, a player will need to reference the position by its Id. So now that we have a simple data model laid out, I would like to generate two things based on it:  A class for each entity with properties corresponding to each entity property An IO class with methods to get data for each entity, either all instances, by Id or by parent. Now my experience with code generation in the past has consisted of writing up little apps that use the code dom directly to regenerate code on demand (or using tools like CodeSmith).  Surely, there has got to be a more fun way to do this given that we are using the Entity Framework which already has built-in code generation for SQL Server support.  Lets start with that built-in stuff to give us a base to work off of.  Right click anywhere in the canvas of our model and select Add Code Generation Item: So just adding that code item seemed to do quite a bit towards what I was intending: It apparently generated a class for each entity, but also a whole ton more.  I mean a TON more.  Way too much complicated code was generated now that code is likely to be a black box anyway so it shouldnt matter, but we need to understand how to make this work the way we want it to work, so lets get ready to do some stumbling through that text template (tt) file. When I open the .tt file that was generated, right off the bat I realize there is going to be trouble there is no color coding, no intellisense no nothing!  That is going to make stumbling through more like groping blindly in the dark while handcuffed and hopping on one foot, which was one of the alternate titles I was considering for this blog.  Thankfully, the community comes to my rescue and I wont have to cast my mind back to the glory days of coding in VI (look it up, kids).  Using the Extension Manager (Available under the Tools menu), I did a quick search for tt editor in the Online Gallery and quickly found the Tangible T4 Editor: Downloading and installing this was a breeze, and after doing so I got some color coding and intellisense while editing the tt files.  If you will be doing any customizing of tt files, I highly recommend installing this extension.  Next, well see if that is enough help for us to tweak that tt file to do the kind of code generation that we wantDid you know that DotNetSlackers also publishes .net articles written by top known .net Authors? • Should Scala IDE Worksheets be part of your open git repository?

  Those familiar with Scala IDE will know about the great testing environment offered by the Scala Worksheet. You can scribble and scratch, much like in the REPL, but with all the goodness added by the IDE as a whole (refactoring, saving, error checking, etc). When you create a worksheet, it is created with the .sc extension, and also creates a artifact under a hidden directory called .worksheet. This is all fine and dandy, but should one include these in your public .git repositories? People who does not use Scala IDE (or older versions) may find these files confusing. On the other hand, making some of your experiments public to developers who are using Scala IDE, may give them a quick start into experimenting and learning the project.

• How do I compress a directory?

  I'm trying to compress a directory and ftp it to a windows ftp. I have tried every tar command I can find to compress a directory. It appears to be ok. Then I transfer it and view it's contents using Winrar. Winrar keeps telling me the file is corrupted. I have viewed other .gz or .bz2 files using winrar but for some odd reason I can't get it to work. I would prefer just to have it zip the files so they have a .zip extension but even then when i try to browse it's contents both windows and winrar claim it's corrupt. Does anyone else have a suggestion as to something else to try?

• Force Unity to open any file with any program

  When you drag a file to the Unity launcher, only the applications that are supposed to open that file will remain active, while all others become deactivated. Is it possible to configure Unity to ignore that setting and open the file, no matter what extension the file has, with any of the applications on the launcher? I'd be glad to get an unsupported file type from the application when I make a mistake instead of losing a bunch of time configuring what application can open what file (that's because it is no longer possible to add a custom application/path in the Open with... menu)

• GPL question : web application using Imagick and GhostScript => Which would be the final licence?

  I am a bit confusing and I need your help to undertand my problem. I have developed a web application (PHP, JQuery) for one of my customer. Recently, my customer ask me to add a new feature permitting PDF to JPG conversion. After web browsing, I have discovered that iMagick (Apache licence) PHP extension with GhostScript (GPL licence) is the only solution. But, as my customer want to sell the web application to others companies, I have to use non-GPL licences. By the way, this feature is OPTIONAL and the final user must download and install manually iMagick and GhostScript if he his interesting by using the PDF conversion. Is there someone to tell me if the fact to use Imagick to convert PDF to JPG (and therefore use GhostScript) turns my current proprietary licence to GPL? And what about if I don't use Imagick but call GhostScript using PHP exec() function? Is there others non-GPL projects to convert PDF to JPG that I could use with PHP? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

• What would you call the concept of CofeeScript or Sass to be?

  There is this rising trend with web development of making new pseudo languages to extend the functionality of JavaScript, CSS and HTML given that those are static and their metamorphosis or evolution is painfully slow due to the variety of browser providers. So I am currently having a concept dilema on how to categorize them for a book I was made to write by my employer as no one seems to have a name for these pseudo languages. A tiny list of them : JavaScript: LiveScript, Metalua, Uberscript, EmberScript. HTML: Razor, Java Scriptlets. CSS : LESS, Sass. I believe the concept of these pseudo languages and a language or an extension of a language is quite different. First these languages do not extend any functionality currently existing on HTML or CSS or JavaScript, they simply work around it. And also they do not "compile" to an intermediate language, they are merely 1-1 translated to something that only then can be compiled. What would you call them?

• Installing programs from a download

  Hello, my name is Anthony and I'm new to Ubuntu and any other Linux OS for that matter. My question concerns downloading a program, and then installing it. The program is called Remotedroid, it lets you use your phone as a wireless keyboard and mouse. I'm use to windows automatically starting setup upon download and cant figure out how to initiate the install in Ubuntu. The programs website says its compatible with Linux OS and the readme file says to just click the extension remotedroidserver.jar to use, but it wont work and none of the files do anything. I've unzipped all the files and my Java is all up to date as far as i know, I think. I'm just not getting how to run a setup in Ubuntu. I looked around this site for the answer but came up with nothing so if someone could maybe offer some insight I would be grateful. Thank you.

• 3TB non-boot hard disk on older motherboard

  It is time to expand the capacity of my Ubuntu home file server so I would like to purchase some 3TB hard disks. However, I am concerned with potential compatibility issues. I've tried searching around but I haven't found information which clearly addresses my particular situation. My server is running Ubuntu 10.04 on an Intel P35 chipset based system. The motherboard does not support UEFI (and, by extension, GPT?). However, Ubuntu does support 2TB disks. Will I be able to properly utilize these new disks, or does the motherboard limitation trump all else? The boot disk is <2TB and will not be updated nor am I dual-booting; these disks will be used strictly as slaves in a pure Ubuntu environment. I'd hate to pull the trigger on these new disks just to be unpleasantly surprised, so any feedback is appreciated. Thanks!

  I wonder if there are benign use-cases for simulating mouse clicks using event.initMouseEvent. I found that it is used for creating pop-under ads in the following way: var e = document.createEvent('MouseEvents'); e.initMouseEvent('click', true, true, window, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, true, false, false, true, 0, null); a.dispatchEvent(e); This code simulates a click on the opening browser window, to force the newly opened window beneath it. Evil. I'm thinking of simply preventing all simulated clicks in my own browser via a browser extension, but I wonder if I might break useful websites and behavior in the process. Therefore I wonder what situations justify simulating mouse clicks, and if there are big sites that use it in non-evil ways.

• How to name a clamp function that only clamps from one side?

  Clamp() is a function that ensures that provided variable is in provided range. You can find such function in .NET, in Unity, and probably anywhere. While it is useful, I often need to clamp my value from one side only. For example, to ensure that float is always non-negative or always positive (like radius value from inspector). I used names ClampFromAbove() and ClampFromBelow(), but I wonder if such names is good or even grammatically valid in programming-English. Also, it probably make sense to distinguish non-negative case too. How'd you name such function? Something like EnsureNonNegative()? My intention is creating pair of extension methods and use them like this: var normalizedRadius = originalRadius.ClampFromBelow(0.0001); var distance = someVector.Magnitude.ClampFromAbove(maxDistance);

• Mount Bluetooth USB in VirtualBox

  I originally asked this question here Python Module PyBluez Error and have narrowed it down to basically I can't get VBox to recognize my bluetooth USB. I'm on a MAC OS X 10.9.2. I've installed VirtualBox as well as the Extension Pack and I've installed Ubuntu Desktop 10.04.4 on the VirtualBox. I've searched several Mac forums and this seems to be a common problem w/o a clear solution. Anyways, the question is how can I get VirtualBox to let Ubuntu recognize my bluetooth USB? I've checked 'Enable USB 2.0 EHCI Controller' and added my two bluetooth devices to the filters list. and when I click here to mount the USB I get this error message... Any ideas? Thanks, John

  I have seen lots of articles but none really help me. That is because I want to use dapper as a DAL. Should I create repositories with special functions? Like getStaffActive()? If I use repositories I can implement with dapper-extension a generic crud I have no idea how to handle database connection. Where to open the connection? If I do this at every function then how am I supposed to use transaction scope? Somehow the repositories I work with should share a connection in order transaction to work. But how to do this? Openning connection in BLL? If I use queries and execute them directly then still the same thing.

  I'm using TexturePacker in one of my games, though when packing a bunch of textures their extension is kept in the data file. So when I want to find a texture I need to search for "image.png" instead of just "image". Is there an option to let texture packer ignore the extensions of my source images in the data file? Solved: So if anyone else wants this, here's the exported I made: https://www.box.com/s/bf12q1i1yc9jr2c5yehd Just extract it into "C:\Program Files (x86)\CodeAndWeb\TexturePacker\bin\exporters\UIToolkit No Extensions" (or something similar) and it should show op as an exporter.
