  Can Castle ActiveRecord do optimistic locking on properties? I found optimistic locking for the entire class, but not for an individual property. In my case, I need to make it so that adding/removing elements in a collection does not update the version number of the entity (so for example, adding a Product to a Store without changing any of Store's properties will not increment the version number).

They are now changing to PDF format, is there a way to reliably port the data from the PDF and insert it into our SQL Server 2008 database?   I have an NSTreeController (supplying content to an NSOutlineView). I'd like the top-level objects to be of one class, and all other objects (so, children at any level) to be of another. What's the best way to go about this? I'll need to somehow change the behavior of at least add, addChild, insert, and insertChild, I suppose. I was hoping, though, to find a simple way to account for this in only one location, rather than changing four separate methods.

  Hi, I'm creating a web-browser type app (using a web view object) that needs to be able to connect to the internet via a proxy. Server, port, username and password can all be hardcoded into the app but unfortunately I have no idea how to customise the proxy settings of a web view without changing the system wide proxy settings. If you know how to do this please provide some example code, thanks a lot! (Also, if it changes anything - I'm developing for mac, not iPhone)

• Override the Local module directory for cvs using Hudson

  Hi guys, I'm using Hudson and I need to change the checkout directory for cvs. Instead of checkout/update the project under the workspace dir, I'd like to specify a dir (as you can do for svn, changing the Local module directory conf) that will match the cvs tree structure. Eg. under cvs dir1/dir2/project on my box workspace/dir1/dir2/project is that possible with cvs and Hudson? Maybe there's a way to override the cvs call? Thanks! Roberto

• Is it worth moving from stored procedures to linq ?

  I'm looking at standardizing programming in an organisaiton. Half uses stored procedures and the other half Linq. From what i've read there is still some debate going on on this topic. My concern is that MS is trying to slip in it's own proprietry query language 'linq' to make SQL redundant. If a few years back microsoft had tried to win customers from oracle and sybase with their MSSQL database and stated that it didn't use SQL by their own proprietry query langues ie linq. I doubt many would have switched. I believe that is exactly what is happening now by introducting it into the applicaiton business layer. I have used MS for many years but there is one gripe that I have with them and that is that they change their direction a lot. By a lot I mean new releases of .net, silverlight etc are more than 30% different from previous version. So by the time you become productive a new release is on the way. As things stand now a web developer using .net would need to know either vb.net or c#, xml, xaml,javascript,html, sql and now linq. That doesn't make for good productivity in my books. My concern is that once we all start using linq MS will start changing it between releases. and it will become an ever changing landscape. I believe that 'linq to sql' has already been deprecated. At leas with SQL we are dealing with a more stable and standardized language. Are we looking at a programming revolution or a marketing campaign? As far as I know other languages like Cobol have stayed the same for years. A cobol program from 20 years ago could pick up todays code and start working on it. Could a Vb3 person work on a modern .net web app ? Would these large changes need to be made if the underlying original foundation had been sound ? I worry about following MS shaking roadmap with it's deadends and double backs. are there any architects out there who feel the same ? regards Josef

  I've noticed that on some websites (including SO) the link to the CSS will look like: <link rel="stylesheet" href="http://sstatic.net/so/all.css?v=6638"> I would say its safe to assume that ?v=6638 tells the browser to load version 6638 of the css file. But can I do this on my websites and can I include different versions of my CSS file just by changing the numbers?

I have to update these weights very often, several thousand times per learning session. Is FP still applicable here? I mean in fp we can't modify variables and only able to return new variables not changing previous values. Does this mean I have to recreate whole network on every weight update?

  Because of the additional complexity of drawing via an EAGLView vs. a UIView I was wondering of someone has found a robust way to handle changing the device orientation from Landscape to Portrait. One approach is to tear down the framebuffer and rebuild from scratch which would require saving/retrieving scene state. The other would be far simpler: just rotate and resize the view. Suddenly late yesterday, without changing either Xcode or Quicksilver, it started appearing like this: Screenshot There's no "open" option in the action list anymore. I rebooted with no joy.   I'm messing around with GTK and glade for the first time, and I've run across a really annoying issue. When I enter text into a TextView, the TextView automatically resizes larger, pushing other widgets away. This is a really annoying behavior. I do not want my TextView changing size depending on the amount of text within it. Does anyone know what I can do to prevent the TextView from resizing based on its content?

Is there a way I can tell this app to use Ruby 1.8 vice 1.9? Would it be easier to decouple the app from Rails 2.2.0 and upgrade it to Rails 2.3.6? If changing the rails would be easier, how do I do that?
