• Django colon syntax in template tags: only in newer versions?

  I just deployed an application to a new server, and although I'm using virtualenv, I had to install a new environment on the production server, which has a different architecture. Anyway, I received no TemplateSytaxErrors in development, but on the production server, I get: Exception Type: TemplateSyntaxError Exception Value: Caught SyntaxError while rendering: invalid syntax (views.py, line 25) The offending line is: {% url admin:password_change as password_change_url %} Upon removing that line, the TemplateSyntaxError hops to the next line that has a colon in it (and lets other template tags work fine). So my question is this: is there some discrepancy in versions of Python/Django that would allow or disallow the namespacing syntax? The template tags are in django-grappelli (http://code.google.com/p/django-grappelli/), so I'd rather not go through their code and rewrite all the template tags. Development server: 32-bit Debian Python 2.5.5 Django 1.2.1 Production server: 64-bit CentOS Python 2.4.3 Django 1.2.1 Any ideas?

• PHP Possible Memory Leak

  I have a script that loops through a database for images to convert with gd & imagick. I unset or replace all variables and objects in between each loop. For each loop, get_memory_usage(1) reveals a concurrent amount of memory used by that script. Which is expected. But, when I run "top", the %MEM column reports that this script, (same PID), increments with several percentages for each loop. I destroy all images when I'm done with them, and when I run get_defined_vars(); only the standard globals and a few variables I have is set. Why is "top" % Memory Usage different than what PHP reports? After 10 loops, PHP has taken 20% percetage of the system memory. I run php 5.2.6 on Debian 5

• SQL Server 2008 R2

  Hi all, I heard on the grapevine that Microsoft will be releasing SQL Server 2008 R2 within a year. Though I initially thought this was a patch for the just released 2008 version, I realised that it’s actually a completely different version that you would have to pay for. (Am I correct, if you had SQL Server 2008, would you have to pay again if you wanted to upgrade to 2008 R2?) If you’re already running SQL Server 2008, would you say it’s still worth the upgrade? Or does it depend on the size of your company and current setup. For what I’ve initially read, I do get the impression that this version would be more useful for the very high end hardware setup where you want to have very good scalability. With regard to programming, is there any extra enhancements/support in there which you’re aware of that will significantly help .NET Products/Web Development? Initially found a couple of links on it, but I was wondering if anyone had anymore info to share on subject as I couldn’t find nothing on SO about it? Thanks. New SQL Server R2 Microsoft Link on it. Microsoft SQL 2008 R2 EDIT: More information based on the Express Edition One very interesting thing about SQL Server 2008 R2 concerns the Express edition. Previous express versions of SQL Server Express had a database size limit of 4GB. With SQL Server Express 2008 R2, this has now been increased to 10GB !! This now makes the FREE express edition a much more viable option for small & medium sized applications that are relatively light on database requirements. Bear in mind, that this limit is per database, so if you coded your application cleverly enough to use a separate database for historical/archived data, you could squeeze even more out of it! • Can't find netbooted for Kerrighed pxe boot with Ubuntu Lucid Server

  I'm following installtion guides for pxe booting and kerrighed. I can't find the package nfsbooted for Ubuntu 10.04. Where did it go? Context: At work I have access to 8 mini-ITX PCs and am trying to build a cluster. My plans include trying Condor, GridGain, Hadoop, and recently Kerrighed has caught my eye. (I reaslise these are all for different kinds of things, I'm just evaluating). Ideally, I'd like to have all the nodes network boot from a single server, since that seems so much easier to manage, plus I can 'borrow' additional PCs for a while without touching their HD. I've been getting on great with Ubuntu Lucid Server (10.04), trying to follow the only guides I can find to get pxe booting (and ultimately kerrighed) to work. This guide is for Ubuntu 8.04 and this one is for Debian. They both refer to a package I can't seem to find, nfsbooted. Has this package been replaced? Am I doing something daft?

• Image in table cell doesn't scale down: using ie8/7

  Can anyone help me troubleshoot my website? http://www.andrewstonyer.co.uk/test/ My problem: On IE8/7 if you click on a thumbnail (only 'Pulse' and 'Time Within The Hour' are wired in right now) an overlay appears with detail of that piece. What should happen, and does in Gecko/Webkit, is that the overlay contains a table with a heading, a scaled, centered image, and a nav menu. There is a toggle for text, which pushes up the image cell and makes the image smaller, keeping proportion. I know the overlay looks like ass right now- those are just placeholder colours :) On IE, the image doesn't fit perfectly in the table cell, which means that everything is pushed down outside the window. I can't see the nav menu. It appears to render the image at actual pixel size (in the CSS, the img class element is set to 100% height). The text cell is toggled with jquery, when toggled on in IE, it doesn't appear to 'squeeze' the above cell, which is what I want to happen. Could any experts help? Regards, Jon

• How should open source libraries be used on Windows?

  There are many open-source libraries that can be compiled with Visual Studio. I'm porting a program from Linux to Windows, but it depends on a number of libraries. I don't know what the best practices regarding libraries are on Windows. On Linux, these libraries are typically part of the distribution. To use sqlite on Debian, for example, you need only to install libsqlite3-dev and the include files and libraries (both static and dynamic) are automatically installed and available to your program. If you need a different version than your distribution supplies, you can compile it in your home directory, install it to ~/include and ~/lib, and set the appropriate environment variables so that your compiler includes those directories in its search path. What is the best way to use libraries that are distributed as source on Windows? If I link dynamically rather than statically, is there an easy way to copy required DLLs into the output directory to ease redistribution (assuming license requirements are met)?

  For our first assignment in a System Security class, we have to hack into the professors "cheaply organized" sql database. I know the only user is "admin" and the select statement generated in the php is: select user_id from user where user_username = 'admin' AND user_password = md5('noob') I am having a number of problems attempting to bypass the password part of this statement as the professor has some javascript embedded in the page to sanitize the username and password of any non-alphanumeric values. This can be bypassed by turning off javascript :P but any values sent still get cleaned by the operating system (some build of Debian 32-bit). I've seen the code for the login request and it does not escape any characters. How do I bypass the operating systems escape sequences?

  When concerned about creating web applications, I often ask myself how I can make the code easy to read and above all; how to make it easy to maintain. There has been alot of inventions in the last couple of years with probably millions of programmers sharing these thoughts. So, lets test if we can squeeze the distilled knowledge of millions of StackOverflow users for this ultimate answer: Which language/framework combination in the world right now is the most expressive to do common tasks? Please provide a simple example of simplicity, add a link to more information about the language, and no more than one entry per language/framework combination. Specifications: "Web application" in this context refers to applications that runs on a server and outputs HTML/Javascript/CSS for rendering on a client browser. Any server operating system is ok. "Language/Framework combination" can for example be like Java+Struts or Java+SpringWeb or Perl+CGI or Java+ZK "Most expressive" in this context is meant to be minimal code to do common tasks. "Common tasks" include simple output/input, i.e. form specifying, displaying and processing, as well as simply styling of output. I am more concerned about minimality than about complete functionality. A decent language design can have great potential even though it is not complete.

• Which technology(s) / language(s) to write linux web application/service? [closed]

  I am currently playing with some open source home automation software www.domotiga.nl The software is built in Gambas2 (a graphical programming language similar to visual basic). I am considering building something similar or porting domotiga to a server based application/service. The application would need a web front end and i will likely be developing in debian (arm). But i'm not sure if php or python are suitable for server based applications which need to be always running (collecting data etc) rather than just running when accessed. Which technology(s) / language(s) would you suggest i look into? I used to do a lot of Visual Basic, then VB.NET, now C# and have played with php a few years back- but don't really want this to sway the decision too much as i should be able to pickup whatever language if i decide to proceed.

  I have a PHP app that inserts 'Pass', 'Fail' or 'NA' into fields TEST1, TEST2, TEST3... through TEST15. I have a field called OVERALL that needs to be automatically updated with 'FAIL' if any of the TEST1-TEST15 fields contains 'Fail'. I'm pretty sure I need to use a trigger containing the update statement and either CASE or IF, but I haven't been able to nail down the exact syntax. Can anyone please help a MySQL noob? I'm using MySQL Server version: 5.1.63-0+squeeze1 (Debian).

  Hi Community, I've only written a few small php web apps and I'm throwing code together right now to allow for users to submit short stories. these stories will display and allow others to vote them up. The winner receives something rather valuable and I'm paranoid people are going to try to manipulate it. Debian / Apache / PHP 5.2 / jquery users are not required to login / authenticate. users can vote multiple stories up but only once for each story Is it as simple as tagging each story with an IP address and not counting other submissions from that IP?   I have just installed Debian Lenny with Apache, MySQL, and PHP and I am receiving a PDOException could not find driver. This is the specific line of code it is referring to: $dbh = new PDO('mysql:host=' . DB_HOST . ';dbname=' . DB_NAME, DB_USER, DB_PASS) DB_HOST, DB_NAME, DB_USER, and DB_PASS are constants that I have defined. It works fine on the production server (and on my previous Ubuntu Server setup). Is this something to do with my PHP installation? Searching the internet has not helped, all I get is experts-exchange and examples, but no solutions.

• Looking for python lib to manage remote tasks

  Hi, I have server with django on it, this server runs some manage.py commands and update database. Now I need to move some of this tasks to different servers. I don't want to allow remote db access and need some tool\lib to be able to start task on remote servers by main server's command and update tasks code/add new tasks. I have ssh access to every server, all servers run under debian and all code in python. I was thiking about creating my own xmpp based solution(server sends messages to slave servers with commands to execute, like "update task", "run task"), or maybe some low-level ssh based solution where main server logs to slave servers and executes bash commands. But I would be happy to hear any advices.

  I need to allow an external client to change the IP of the Linux machine where the program is running (C++). I already know how to list all the local interfaces and the current IPs assigned to them. I also know how to programatically change said IPs. What I need to know is how to make this change permanent so, if the machine reboots, it keeps the same network configuration. What's the best way to do this? Manually parsing /etc/network/interfaces?   I am running ubuntu 10.10 Maverick Meerkat, and recently I am helping in testing out indicator-weather using the unstable buids. However there was a bug which caused my system to freeze suddenly (due to indicator-weather not ubuntu) and the only way to recover is to do a hard reset of the system. This happened a couple of times. And when i tried to open banshee after a couple of such resets I get the following fatal error which forces me to quit banshee. • Windows Phone 8, possible tablets and what the latest update might mean

  Microsoft have just announced an update to Windows Phone 8. As one of the five, maybe six people who actually bought a WP8 handset I found this interesting. Then I read the blog post about it, and rushed off to write somewhat less than a thousand words about a single picture. The blog post announces an extra column of tiles on the start screen, and support for higher resolutions. If we ignore all the usual flummery about how this will make your life better, that (and the rotation lock) sounds a little like stage setting for tablets. Looking at the preview screenshot, I started to wonder. What it’s called Phablet_5F00_StartScreenProductivity_5F00_01_5F00_072A1240.jpg Pretty conclusive. If you can brand something a “phablet” and sleep at night you’re made of sterner stuff than I am, but that’s beside the point. It’s explicit in the post that Microsoft are expecting a broader range of form factors for WP8, but they stop short of quite calling out tablet size. The extra columns and resolution definitely back that up, so why stop at a 6 inch “phablet”? Sadly, the string of numbers there don’t really look like a Lumia model number – that would be a bit tendentious even for a speculative blog post about a single screenshot. “Productivity” is interesting too. I get into this a bit more below, but this is a pretty clear pitch for a business device. What it looks like Something that would look quite decent on a 7 inch screen, but something a bit too vertical to go toe-to-toe with the Surface. Certainly, it would look a lot better on a large-factor phone than any of the current models. Those tiles are going to get cramped and a bit ugly if the handsets aren’t getting bigger. What’s on it You have a bunch of missed calls, you rarely text, use a stocks app, and your budget spreadsheet and meeting notes are a thumb-reach away. Outlook is your main form of email. You care enough about LinkedIn to not only install its app but give it a huge live tile. There’s no beating about the bush here, the implicit persona is a corporate exec. With Nokia in the bag and Blackberry pushing daisies, that may not be a stupid play. There’s almost certainly a niche there if they can parlay their corporate credentials into filling it before BYOD (which functionally means an iPhone) reaches the late adopters. The really quite slick WP8 Office implementation ought to help here. This is the face they’ve chosen to present, the cultural milieu they’re normalizing for Windows Phone. It’s an iPhone for Serious Business Grown-ups. Could work, I guess. Does it mean anything? Is the latest WP8 update a sign that we can expect to see tablets running Windows Phone rather than WinRT? Well, WinRT tablets haven’t exactly taken off but I’m not quite going to make a leap like that just from a file name and a column of icons. I feel pretty safe, however, conjecturing that Microsoft would like to squeeze a WP8 “phablet” into the palm of every exec who’s ever grumbled about their Blackberry, and this release might get them a bit closer. If it works well incrementing up to larger devices, then that could be a fair hedge against WinRt crashing and burning any harder in the marketplace.

But selling is not an action tied to money and products. Selling is about convincing people to see your point of view and act on it. If you want your company to cover a trip to a conference, you may have to sell the idea to your boss. If you want to buy that new big screen TV, you have to sell the idea to your significant other. If you want to go on a weekend fishing trip with the boys you might be called in to help sell the idea to your buddies wife. We all sell, but we don’t all sell very well. So enter The New Strategic Selling, a book based on the sales course put on by the Miller-Heiman group. In fact, this isn’t really a “New” strategy to selling as its been around for a number of years. But the concepts they present, the ideas about selling, these are still very radical based on what most of us have experienced. Gone are the high pressure, win at all cost, GlenGarry-GlenRoss style of sales…instead the book presents a framework to switch to need-based selling. It’s the idea that instead of going in raving about a product or service, you build a relationship where the buyer expresses what their needs are and your response is to present a solution that best fits that need. Instead of focussing on the amount of money you can squeeze out of a client, you focus on whether everyone wins, that they receive win-results from the engagement, that repeat business is developed over time delivering value over and over again. The great thing about the book is that what it teaches…things like how to identify different buying influencers, how to prepare for meetings, techniques to solicit information about what the buyer is really thinking/feeling…these things are entirely applicable in *any* situation that you need to sell to someone…and remember: selling is convincing people to see your point of view and act on it. So that new big screen TV you want to buy but need to convince your wife on? This book can help you. That training opportunity you want your company to send you on? This book can help you. The upgrade to your community park that you want to lobby the local civic authorities for? This book can help you. The book is a bit wordy. I found that the length could have been reduced and the points still have gotten across. That’s really the only knock that I have though; the insight that it provides is so worthwhile that having to chew through extra words is well worth it. You definitely don’t have to be a professional salesperson to benefit from this book. Rating: 4/5

• Why do apache2 upgrades remove and not re-install libapache2-mod-php5?

  We repeatedly see that when an apache2 update arrives and is installed it causes the libapache2-mod-php5 package to be removed and does not subsequently re-install it automatically. We must subsequently re-install the libapache2-mod-php5 manually in order to restore functionality to our web server. • Unable to ssh out anywhere - ssh_exchange_identification

  I have a setup where I'm running Ubuntu 11.10 as a VirtualBox guest under a Windows 7 host, behind a restrictive corporate firewall. I have set up NAT from the host port 22 to Ubuntu's port 22; IT inform me that they have opened port 22 outbound for the host machine's IP address. I have run ssh-keygen -t rsa, and am trying to test the setup by connecting to github and another known ssh server. In both cases the connect is refused with ssh_exchange_identification: Connection closed by remote host. Full -vvv log is below. Is this possibly still due to the corporate firewall? If so, what else might I need to request from them?
