  I want to use Project Rome to create an RSS feed, using the code from the tutorial as base. I would like to add a pubsubhubbub discovery link, but there doesn't seem to be a general way to do so. I can use a Link object if I create an atom feed (which I don't want to limit myself to), or I can just add foreign markup, like this: // import org.jdom.Element Element element = new Element("link"); element.setAttribute("rel", "hub"); element.setAttribute("href", "https://myhub.example.com/endpoint"); feed.setForeignMarkup(Arrays.asList(element)); But it feels ugly. Is this really the best way to do this?

• Enum.values() vs EnumSet.allOf( ). Which one is more preferable?

  I looked under the hood for EnumSet.allOf and it looks very efficient, especially for enums with less than 64 values. Basically all sets share the single array of all possible enum values and the only other piece of information is a bitmask which in case of allOf is set in one swoop. On the other hand Enum.values() seems to be a bit of black magic. Moreover it returns an array, not a collection, so in many cases it must be decorated with Arrays.asList( ) to be usable in any place that expects collection. So, should EnumSet.allOf be more preferable to Enum.values? More specifically, which form of for iterator should be used: for ( final MyEnum val: MyEnum.values( ) ); or for ( final MyEnum val: EnumSet.allOf( MyEnum.values ) );

I have been using Query to try to get the values - when I use MsgBox() to display results, they display, but my main Windows Form is Trashed - changed colors, etc. The system has Bugs. Instead, I have to create an elaborate structure of arrays of objects and read the XML line-by-line and do the same for saving - this is the dark ages. Art

• Passing a string from C# to cpp with COM

  I have a C# COM server which is consumed by a cpp client. One of the C# methods returns a string. In cpp the returned string is represented in Unicode (UTF-16), at least according to the memory view. Is this always the case with COM strings? Is there a way to use UTF-8 instead? I saw some code where strings were passed between cpp and c# as byte arrays. Is there any benefit in this?

• Large number array compression

  Hi All, I've got a javascript application that sends a large amount of numerical data down the wire. This data is then stored in a database. I am having size issues (too much bandwidth, database getting too big). I am now ready to sacrifice some performance for compression. I was thinking of implementing a base 62 number.toString(62) and parseInt(compressed, 62). This would certainly reduce the size of the data but before I go ahead and do this I thought I would put it to the folks here as I know there must be some outside the box solution I have not considered. The basic specs are: - Compress large number arrays into strings for JSONP transfer (So I think UTF is out) - Be relatively fast, look I'm not expecting same performance as I have now but I also don't want gzip compression either. • Are some data structures more suitable for functional programming than others?

  In Real World Haskell, there is a section titled "Life without arrays or hash tables" where the authors suggest that list and trees are preferred in functional programming, whereas an array or a hash table might be used instead in an imperative program. This makes sense, since it's much easier to reuse part of an (immutable) list or tree when creating a new one than to do so with an array. So my questions are: Are there really significantly different usage patterns for data structures between functional and imperative programming? If so, is this a problem? What if you really do need a hash table for some application? Do you simply swallow the extra expense incurred for modifications?

• Decrypting PKCS#7 encrypted data in C#

  I am working on a solution that needs to decrypt PKCS#7 encrypted data, preferably in C#. As far as I can see, the .NET api has support for this through the System.Security.Cryptography.Pkcs namespace. However it seems that the implementation can only work on byte arrays. So what do I do when I have a large encrypted file that does not fit into the memory? Am I missing something here, or is there another way to do this on a Stream level instead of using bytearrays?

• PyOpenGL: glVertexPointer() offset problem

  My vertices are interleaved in a numpy array (dtype = float32) like this: ... tu, tv, nx, ny, nz, vx, vy, vz, ... When rendering, I'm calling gl*Pointer() like this (I have enabled the arrays before): stride = (2 + 3 + 3) * 4 glTexCoordPointer( 2, GL_FLOAT, stride, self.vertArray ) glNormalPointer( GL_FLOAT, stride, self.vertArray + 2 ) glVertexPointer( 3, GL_FLOAT, stride, self.vertArray + 5 ) glDrawElements( GL_TRIANGLES, len( self.indices ), GL_UNSIGNED_SHORT, self.indices ) The result is that nothing renders. However, if I organize my array so that the vertex position is the first element ( ... vx, vy, vz, tu, tv, nx, ny, nz, ... ) I get correct positions for vertices while rendering but texture coords and normals aren't rendered correctly. This leads me to believe that I'm not setting the pointer offset right. How should I set it? I'm using almost the exact same code in my other app in C++ and it works.

  Objective: I have a list of header files (about 50 of them), And each header-file has few arrays with constant elements. I need to write a program to count the elements of the array. And create some other form of output (which will be used by the hardware group). My solution: I included all the 50 odd files and wrote an application. And then I dumped all the elements of the array into the specified format. My environment: Visual Studio V6, Windows XP My problem: Each time there is a new set of Header files, I am now changing the VC++ project settings to point to the new set of header files, and then rebuild. My question: A bit in-sane though, Is there any way to mention the header from some command line arguments or something? I just want to avoid re-compiling the source every time...

• Datatype to use for collection of QT buttons

  Hi Everyone, I am brand new to QT and need to develop the Mancala game. Since I'm brand new to the QT environment, my plan it to keep things very simple. I will be using the "Push Button" widget as pieces on the game. Since two players play this game, my idea is to have to arrays of buttons. One array for player 1 and the other for player 2. My question is since I am using "Push Button" widgets, how can I group them to iterate through? I notice that QT has both the array and vector data types but I'm confused on how these data types can be used to "group" the buttons. Does anyone know of any sample code or tutorials to look at to learn more? Thanks for your time and any input provided.

• Idiomatic way to do list/dict in Cython?

  My problem: I've found that processing large data sets with raw C++ using the STL map and vector can often be considerably faster (and with lower memory footprint) than using Cython. I figure that part of this speed penalty is due to using Python lists and dicts, and that there might be some tricks to use less encumbered data structures in Cython. For example, this page (http://wiki.cython.org/tutorials/numpy) shows how to make numpy arrays very fast in Cython by predefining the size and types of the ND array. Question: Is there any way to do something similar with lists/dicts, e.g. by stating roughly how many elements or (key,value) pairs you expect to have in them? That is, is there an idiomatic way to convert lists/dicts to (fast) data structures in Cython? If not I guess I'll just have to write it in C++ and wrap in a Cython import.

• Objective-C initial values of created C-array

  I create an array, similar to classic C (not NSArray or one of it's children) - something like BOOL i[5];. And I want to make all its values to be equal to NO. First of all, I didn't found any information about initial values of such arrays (I know that in classic C they will be undefined, but don't know exactly about Objective-C. I found info about classes and its inner data [after allocation, without initialization], but not about simple data types). And the second, if I should set array values manually - should I use memset(...); or something different? To prevent possible questions... I want to use this construction as array of temporary boolean flags and don't think that it is proved to use something like NSArray here.

• Limited IList<> implementation ?

  Hello people, I'm doing some work with stats, and want to refactor the following method : public static blah(float[] array) { //Do something over array, sum it for example. } However, instead of using float[] I'd like to be using some kind of indexed enumerable (to use dynamic loading from disk for very large arrays for example). I had created a simple interface, and wanted to use it. public interface IArray<T> : IEnumerable<T> { T this[int j] { get; set; } int Length { get; } } My problem is : float[] only inherits IList, not IArray, and AFAIK there's no way to change that. I'd like to ditch IArray and only use IList, but my classes would need to implement many methods like Add, RemoveAt although they are fixed size And then my question : how can float[] implement IList whereas it doesn't have these methods ?   I'm using the Mate framework for Flex and communicating with a server running C#. I'm having trouble mapping C# classes to ActopnScript classes. I've got it working fine for simple classes and built in datatypes. If I have a C# method in my API that returns a API.Foo.Result what name do I use for my RemoteClass alias? Do I need to make a separate ActionScript class for each variation of the API.Foo.Result? How do I call C# method that takes a class as a parameter? Making an ActionScript class with members with the same names doesn't seem to work. What is the best way to handle C# classes that contain arrays of objects? The seem to get converted to ArrayCollections of Object. Is there a way to get them converted to an ArrayCollection of my specific class?

  Hi, I am writing a Core Data-based iPhone app and I am new to Objective-C. I have a bug that I am really struggling to nail. What happens when the return key is pressed is that an attribute on an entity is updated. I don't know what array is out of bounds as I am not using any arrays in my code! • Memory Profiling: How to detect which application/package is consuming too much memory

  Hi, I have a situation here at work where we run a JEE server with several applications deployed on it. Lately, we've been having frequent OutOfMemoryException's. We suspect some of the apps might be behaving badly, maybe leaking, or something. The problem is, we can't really tell which one. We have run some memory profilers (like YourKit), and they're pretty good at telling what classes use the most memory. But they don't show relationships between classes, so that leaves us with a situation like this: We see that there are, say, lots of Strings and int arrays and HashMap entries, but we can't really tell which application or package they come from. Is there a way of knowing where these objects come from, so we can try to pinpoint the packages (or apps) that are allocating the most memory? Thank you in advance.

• Substring and its reverse in a string

  My professor was talking about this in a Dynamic programming class and asked us to think over it. She gave us some examples as well. Given a string, we were to find the longest continuous subsequence whose reverse is also a subsequence present in the given string. Example: INPUT: pqrstuvtsrv OUTPUT: i=3, k=2 rst -> tsr (rst found first at i=3 and for 2 more positions) INPUT: mpqrsrqp OUTPUT: i=2, k=6 pqrsrqp in reverse INPUT: mmpqssss OUTPUT: i=5, k=3 I thought of putting the string and its reverse into 2 different arrays and comparing character by character. But I'm sure this is not the best way to do it. Any suggestions as to what could be the most efficient ?

• Ruby - Subclassing array to make it randomize when flattened

  I'm trying to subclass Array in ruby to make it randomize its elements when flatten! is called. Looking at the source code for Array#flatten (http://ruby-doc.org/core/classes/Array.src/M002218.html), it looks like it should recursively call flatten! on any array contained within an array. So, I tried doing something like this: class RandArray < Array def randomize! self.sort!{rand(3)-1} end def flatten! randomize! super end end However, when a normal array contains my RandArray and flatten is called on the normal array, flatten! is never called in my array. I figure ruby is just calling some other method to flatten the arrays recursively, but I can't figure out what that is. Any tips?

• Create unordered list tree menu from data stored in an table with the adjacency list model...php

  I need to create a tree menu of "nth" subcategories. I settled on using the adjacency list model for my table structure, because I won't be updating this table very much and this seemed the easiest to implement for my use. I want to style the output using "ul" and "li" tags...I already have a css and jquery solution to do the styling. My problem comes from pulling the data out of the database and using a recursive function via PHP to build the list ... the list is a concatenated string that gets parsed to build the tree. I'm really having a hard time getting the closing "ul" and "li" tags to line up just where they need to be. Is this the best way to do this? Are there other better ways using arrays or something like that to do this? Any examples you can point me to of "best practices" for building a list like this will be appreciated. Thanks.
