  I have a column in a SQL Server 2005 table defined as an XML column. Is there a way to select records from this table based on the order of two nodes in that column? For example, we have the following structure in our XML: <item> <latitude/> <longitude/> </item> I want to see if there are any records that have latitude/longitude in the opposite order i.e. <longitude/> then <latitude/>. I've tried some XPath expressions but with no luck.

  I have the following database schema : Two tables, books and tags, with n-m relationship. Books - Tags We can have for example the book 1, with tags {A,B,C}, and book 2, with tags {A}. I would like to select the books according to a list of tags. For example : selected tags list : {A,B} - book 1 My idea was to use the MINUS SQL function, to subtract book tags list to the selected tags list, and return the book if the list was empty. Unfortunately, this SQL function is not supported by HQL. Any idea about that ?

How would you write an algorithm that takes care of this? In other words, that makes sure that on 10.000 random picks, A will be selected 2.481 times?

(Generates comment #8) INSERT INTO TreePaths (ancestor, descendant) VALUES (8, 8); INSERT INTO TreePaths (ancestor, descendant) SELECT ancestor, 8 FROM TreePaths WHERE descendant = 5; I try to translate all this into Codeigniters active record db-style language, and that's about where I get stuck.   I am using an alphabetical sorting feature and need a SQL statement to return records beginning with a variable length string. However, records also need to be returned if there are periods, spaces, or dashes between any of the characters in the string. For example, the string could be "M" (easy). Or "MA" (in which case it needs to return records starting with "MA", "M.A", "M A", and "M-A"). Or "MAA", and so on. This is the statement I have so far: "SELECT * from table where LEFT(name," + value.Length + ")='" + value + "'" But I can't work out how to get it to return results where there are periods, spaces or dashes in name. Any help constructing the statement would be great.

This is done to simulate a fantasy draft for a basketball game I'm working on. For example, I need a result set as followed: team1 1 team2 2 team6 3 team9 4 team9 5 team6 6 team2 7 team1 8 As you can see, the first four teams are random then then following four are in reverse order.   Hey everyone This is a real newbie question. I have simple app that selects a picture and display's that picture in a PictureBox. I decided to mess with the Opacity Attribute so I added a timer and created this cool effect where the Main Form's Opacity is increased by 20% every 400 miliseconds. The problem is that now when I click the button that invokes the Select File Dialog Box I'm getting a NullReferenceException error. private void tmrClock_Tick(object sender, EventArgs e) { if (ViewerForm.ActiveForm.Opacity != 1) { ActiveForm.Opacity = ActiveForm.Opacity + .20; } } The error message is pointing to the if statement.   I'm using Rails 3. I want to create a select tag with some options grouped and others not grouped. Options would look something like this: Income Auto Fuel Maintenance Home Maintenance Mortgage In this example, Income is not a group, but Auto and Home are. I see three helper methods grouped_options_for_select and grouped_collection_select, option_groups_from_collection_for_select. Is there a way to use a helper to do this or will I have to generate the HTML myself? I imagine I could use two different helpers to create the options and just append the results of both.

I think this is what is causing the problem but it doesnt make sense I just want to return it as a string. It is only happening on this one field name, I can get every other field in the row but this one it gives me the error. I am getting an exception. The exception I am getting is No Dialect mapping for JDBC type: -1; nested exception is org.hibernate.HibernateException How do you query for a specific column on a row in hibernate?

I've tried using except and intersect to compare subsets of first table with the second table, which works fine, but it takes too long on the intersect part and I can't figure out why (the first table has about 10.000 records and the second has around 10).
