• Trust External Surround Soundcard SC-5500p not working

  I got the following external sound card to make some awesome noise with my speaker set. It should be plug and play, but it so happens that when I plug it in and hook everything up, there's no sound at all. The speaker set I have works if I plug it in the laptop directly (or rather, if I plug the front speakers cable as I can't plug anything else). http://www.trust.com/products/product.aspx?artnr=14134 Would anyone know how I can workaround this problem and make full use of this external sound card on my Ubuntu 12.04 system?

  Type erasure enables Java applications that use generics to maintain binary compatibility with Java libraries and applications that were created before generics Generics were introduced in Java 1.5, so presumably the statement "applications that were created before generics" is referring to Java 1.4? Given that Java 1.4 entered its End Of Life around 2006 and was officially End Of Life'd around 2008. Why is type erasure still being performed in Java 7, etc... Has the statement now become self referential i.e. Type erasure enables Java applications that use generics to maintain binary compatibility with Java libraries and applications that were created with Java versions that perform Type Erasure. Meaning therefore that there will never be a version of Java that doesn't perform Type Erasure.

• Steam not displaying text on wine 1.5 running on Ubuntu 12.04

  Hello fellow dwellers of askubuntu, as the title says I'm having difficulties with getting Steam to run properly. I think I have the solution but I am pretty incompetent with Ubuntu (just started using it the other day) so a step by step process would be unbelievably appreciated! Any useful input is what I'm hoping for but for the brave soul who feels like typing a bit more, perhaps a step-by-step list of instructions starting from downloading Steam off the official website, would be my saving grace. If there is any more info you guys need let me know and I'll of course be happy to oblige!

• Network Computers Not Showing up

  Alright, 3 machines running, two using Ubuntu 11.10 and one on Mac OS X. On the two Ubuntu machines, both have samba installed and configured on the same workgroup, "HOME". On machine 1, I can see all networked machines. On machine 2, I can only see the Mac OS X machine. It doesn't show the other Ubuntu machine. What am I missing on machine 2 to see all networked computers? Any suggestions are welcome. I'm pretty much stumped.

• 12.04 LTE wireless not working in Dell Insprion E1405

  i have the windows XP media edition running on my Dell Inspiron E1405 with all the hardware working properly. Recently i wipe out the windows and installed the Ubuntu 12.04 LTE using the CD and the installation process completed successfully but my wireless stopped working after. computer wireless indicator turned off and i can't even do the wired connection as well. it is Broadcom BCM4311 adapter. i tried to download the driver from the dell website but they don't have the Linux version of the driver if its that causing the problem. i appreciate your help that can solve my issue. thank you.

  This happens on one computer. On the other computer I can see the video. I've installed GStreamer, FFMpeg and Ubuntu Restricted Extras. On the computer where it doesn't work, I've tried both Movie Player and VLC. There must be some difference between the two computers, but how can I obtain all the system information in such a way that a diff could be reasonably done? Or just any other suggestion on how to solve this would be appreciated. :-)

• Black screen in kernel 3.8 (not 3.5, 3.11, 3.13)

  I need to use kernel 3.8 to address some docker compatibility issues. However, after installing this kernel when I attempt to boot my machine I get a black screen. The system appears to boot to the login screen (I hear the drum sounds), but the screen remains black. If I boot into recovery mode the video works, but is buggy/slow. In recover mode it looks like it's using the vesa driver. It'd be great if I can force this in normal mode. My machine has an ivy bridge intel processor with integrated graphics What should I do next to troubleshoot this?

• Gnome Shell installed not working in Ubuntu 12.04

  I had Gnome Shell working perfectly on my desktop, and I tried to install it on my laptop by the exact same method, (tried apt-get, synaptic and software centre), but it won't work. It seems to install fine with no errors. If I select "Gnome" at login, I get the "Gnome Classic" interface rather than Gnome Shell. My laptop has sufficient specs to run Gnome Shell. Am I missing something? EDIT: I have just discovered that under System Details Graphics, it says "Unknown". So, Ubuntu hasn't recognised my graphics card, and I'm guessing this is why Gnome Shell can't work. I have a nVidia GeForce GT 525M. How can I get it working? (as you may have realised, I'm a linux noob)

  I upgraded the other day from Ubuntu 13.04 to 13.10 on my ZaReason laptop, and the WiFi doesn't reconnect after suspend. In 13.04, pressing Fn+F2 turned network connections back on after suspend. The 'soft' wireless hardware switch. But in 13.10, that doesn't work, and trying to enable networking in the networking menu doesn't work either. So I have to restart every time. Any suggestions to make it work?

  I installed gimp2.8 from this ppa: ppa:otto-kesselgulasch/gimp after that, my system began having problems. This is my thought process in trying to fix what's happened and the order in which it happened: I noticed the menu bar at the top changed from an opaque black to perfectly clear and the titles of applications and the hidden buttons reacted slowly. No big deal, restarted to see if it fixed it. It didn't, in fact, when the logon screen came up, the password field was grey and boxy like a default windows 98 theme (that's the best I can describe it) as were all the option buttons for gtk programs. I open terminal to try and reinstall gtk, but the terminal is just a black screen with no ability to input commands. I go to a tty and I reinstalled gtk3 and gtk2 (I have both on my system. I don't think they're in conflict, they hadn't been before hand). I restarted. Nothing doing. Log in, nautilus isn't placing icons on my desktop. I click the launcher. It flashes, but no window opens. Try to open by Alt+f2, nothing. I purge ubuntu-desktop, restart, reinstall ubuntu-desktop. Nothing. I have no clue what to do at this point so I'm asking for any help diagnosing the problem and fixing it.

• mplayer does not disable screensaver

  so i have upgraded to Ubuntu 12.10 and i installed smplayer from the repositories. The thing is when i play a movie (even in full screen) the screen saver comes up. Two methords: 1) replacing @ with %40 2) replacing @ with \@ Three places: 1) export with the .bashrc file 2) editing /etc/apt/apt.conf and setting acquires there 3) using gconf editor and setting the values in /system/http_proxy and setting authentication name and password and checking the use_authentication checkbox. still there is no success and i still get 407 error when trying wget or apt-get update. please do help me, been stuck with this for three hours now. also, i read somewhere that creating a file in /etc/apt/apt.conf.d and then creating a 01proxy file with acquire might work. I tried that also, but it doesnt work. Please help.

In that extended partition, i allocated memory for the swap and root (/) directory and then installed the ubuntu. After that by using EasyBCD tool, added ubuntu to the boot menu in grub2.   A few months I decided to install Ubuntu 12.04 on my PC alongside with my Windows 7 partition. I don't know what happened, but after I updated my Ubuntu, it stoped working, it didn't even launched, when I turned on my pc and choose to run "Ubuntu 12.04" on the Grub Screen, a weird messaged appeared. Well, so I decided to install the Ubuntu 12.10 and forget about the 12.04 partition, no problem. I erased the partitions used for the Ubuntu 12.04 with EaseUS partition Manager. However, when I start my PC, there is still the option of "Ubuntu 12.04" to chose, is that bad? And what about now, can I use the Windows Installer of Ubuntu ( http://www.ubuntu.com/download/help/install-ubuntu-with-windows ) to install the Ubuntu 12.10 ? What should I do to have Ubuntu 12.10 and Windows 7 in dual boot again? Thanks; Thales.
