• How to generate pdf files _with_ utf-8 multibyte characters using Zend Framework

  Hello, I've got a "little" problem with Zend Framework Zend_Pdf class. Multibyte characters are stripped from generated pdf files. E.g. when I write aabccdee it becomes abcd with lithuanian letters stripped. I'm not sure if it's particularly Zend_Pdf problem or php in general. Source text is encoded in utf-8, as well as the php source file which does the job. Thank you in advance for your help ;) P.S. I run Zend Framework v. 1.6 and I use FONT_TIMES_BOLD font. FONT_TIMES_ROMAN does work

• Porting Django's templates engine to C

  Hi folks, I recently wrote a simple and tiny embedded HTTP server for my C++ app (QT) and I played a little bit with Ry's http-parser and loved it. This guy is crazy. So I told to myself: "Hey! Why not port the django template engine to C?" That'd be awesome! I know, it won't be an easy task (not at all, I know) but I'd really love to implement this. So I came here for inspiration, ideas, opinions... I'd really love to have some pointers on the subject, ideas, what is already done, which major problems I'll encounter (and how to solve them) - How not to reinvent the wheel... anyway, you got the idea :) Thanks a million times! • Any way to separate unit tests from integration tests in VS2008?

  I have a project full of tests, unit and integration alike. Integration tests require that a pretty large database be present, so it's difficult to make it a part of the build process simply because of the time that it takes to re-initialize the database. Is there a way to somehow separate unit tests from integration tests and have the build server just run the unit tests? I see that there is an Ordered Unit test in VS2008, which allows you to pick and choose tests, but I can't make it just execute alone, without all the others. Is there a trick that I am missing? Or perhaps I could adorn the unit tests with an attribute? What are some of the approaches people are using? P.S. I know I could use mocking for integration tests (just to make them go faster) but then it wouldn't be a true integration test.

• IntelliJ and internationalisation: accented characters

  I have a java application which has a GUI in both English and French, using the standard Java internationalisation services. I wrote it in JBuilder 2005 on an old machine, and recently upgraded, which has meant changing IDEs. I have finally settled on IntelliJ, which I adore. However, it doesn't seem able to handle the accented characters in my ListResourceBundle descendants which contain French. When I first created the IntelliJ project and added my source (which I did manually, to be sure nothing weird was going on behind the scenes), I noticed that all the accented characters had been changed into pairs of characters such as v©. I went through the code and corrected all of these, and assumed that the problem was fixed. But I find on running the (rebuilt) project that the pairs of characters are still showing, instead of the accented characters that I see in my code!! Can someone who has done internationalisation in IntelliJ please tell me what I need to do to fix this? Grateful TIA! PS I'm on the Mac, BTW

  hi , i want to implement a web service which is both in java and .net.but i will first create a wcf service and later convert the code to java . for securing the webservice , i have this in my mind. i shall be implementing asp.net form authentication type of stuff . i intent to sent a token to the client on providing valid userID and password to the login method. in return i would send a token. on all other service operations i shall check the token . Now i have a wcf client and a wcf service . what should be the shortest way forward ?should i use soap auth header to send the user ID and password and how should the token be transported ( in which field ? http or soap's ?) . P.S: of course i shall enable ssl later.

• Named semaphores in Python?

  Hi, I have a script in python which uses a resource which can not be used by more than a certain amount of concurrent scripts running. Classically, this would be solved by a named semaphores but I can not find those in the documentation of the multiprocessing module or threading . Am I missing something or are named semaphores not implemented / exposed by Python? and more importantly, if the answer is no, what is the best way to emulate one? Thanks, Boaz PS. For reasons which are not so relevant to this question, I can not aggregate the task to a continuously running process/daemon or work with spawned processed - both of which, it seems, would have worked with the python API.

  I am using Microsoft Date and Time Picker control(SP4) in my application.My application runs fine in xp and vista machines as date and time picker refers to mscomct2.ocx which is present in system32 for xp and vista,but for windows 7 i dont have this dll in my system .In windows we need admin rights to register that control. So is there any alternative/similar control available.......It would be helpful if you could let me know why thats not available in windows P.S : My Application is a .Net application and the reason why i have used Microsoft Date and Time Picker control(SP4) instead of .Net provided control is to display year 9999.

• Unable to resolve user environment variable correctly

  I am trying to resolve %USERPROFILE% using WScript.Shell. When I create a vbs file and run directly from Windows, I get the correct path for the logged-in user C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator but it gets resolved to C:\Documents and Settings\Default User instead of logged-in user when I used it inside my classic ASP webapp running on the local machine on IIS. • Give me a practical use-case of Multi-set

  I would like to know a few practical use-cases (if they are not related/tied to any programming language it will be better).I can associate Sets, Lists and Maps to practical use cases. For example if you wanted a glossary of a book where terms that you want are listed alphabetically and a location/page number is the value, you would use the collection TreeMap(OrderedMap which is a Map) Somehow, I can't associate MultiSets with any "practical" usecase. Does someone know of any uses? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Multiset does not tell me enough :) PS: If you guys think this should be community-wiki'ed it is okay.   Long before you practice writing readable code, what "magic numbers" you still remember up to this day? here's some of my list: 72 80 75 77 13 32 27 - up down left right enter space escape 1 2 4 128 - blue green red blink 67h 33h 17h - interrupt for EMS, mouse, printer function AH 9, interrupt 21 alt+219 for block ASCII alt+164 ñ 90 NOP 13 10 carriage return, line feed ascii 1 and 2 face, ascii 3 heart. no not this heart: <3 :-) debug -o72,10 -o71,12 clears the BIOS password. I don't know what those numbers mean, it's like a trade secret that gets shared with each other during college days. ascii 7 sounds a beep P.S. Somehow, remembering some of these magic numbers can help you in some tech problems, your keyboard is broken, the office pal's keyboard doesn't have accented characters. An anecdote, during college, one of my friend asked me how to remove the newlines in his Word document. Not having used Word so much then, I somehow "intuitively" guessed to find ^013 and replace it with blank. Well it works :-)

• Please suggest some alternative to Drupal

  Drupal propose completely different approach in web development (comparing with RoR like frameworks) and it is extremely good from development speed perspective. For example, it is quite easy to clone 90% of stackoverflow functionality using Drupal. But it has several big drawbacks: it is f''cking slow (100-400 requests per page) db structure very complicated, need at least 2 tables for easy content (entity) type, CCK fields very easy generate tons of new db tables anti-object oriented, rather aspect-oriented bad "view" layer implementation, no strange forward layouts and so on. After all this items I can say I like Drupal, but I would like something same, but more elegant and more object oriented. Probably something like http://drupy.net/ - drupal emulation on the top of django. P.S. I wrote this question not for new holy word flame, just write if you know alternative that uses something similar approach.

• How to align MDIChild on left?

  Hi, I am trying hard to align MDIChild form to the left of the parent MDIForm setting Align:=alLeft at design time. Aparently aligned MDIChild is higher than parents client area (I do not know why), thats why vertical scrollbar appears on parent form. The problem is, that I want this form create dynamicaly; putting vertical Splitter between these MDIchild forms, in order to size them by mouse. But when I create Splitter it aligns itself totaly on the left, as if MDIChild form was not aligned (alLeft) at all. • FTP - 530 Sorry, the maximum number of clients...?

  Hi All! i know this is not a properly code question, but who of you don't use an FTP client!? ;-) Ok my problem is that my FTP work great, exept when i upload files on a particular client server! on this server happen that some files are uploaded fine and others not, they stop while uploading at half of it's size, then this error is displayed: 530 Sorry, the maximum number of clients (4) from your host are already connected. Unable to make a connection. Please try again. Obviously this is not true, i'm the only one that is uploading! Anyone had the same experience with this!? PS: i have tried many different FTP, all display the same error or just hung up! Thank's

• Database query optimization

  Ok my Giant friends once again I seek a little space in your shoulders :P Here is the issue, I have a python script that is fixing some database issues but it is taking way too long, the main update statement is this: cursor.execute("UPDATE jiveuser SET username = '%s' WHERE userid = %d" % (newName,userId)) That is getting called about 9500 times with different newName and userid pairs... Any suggestions on how to speed up the process? Maybe somehow a way where I can do all updates with just one query? Any help will be much appreciated! PS: Postgres is the db being used.

• Visual Studio 2008 - formatting/control characters/marks

  Hi, I don't know what I did but somehow the IDE has started displaying a green dot whenever I press spacebar and a green arrowhead whenever I press TAB. The source has become littered with these characters all over and I am finding it very difficult to code in the presence of so many formatting marks. I have tried to search a solution on Google but couldn't perhaps enter the right keywords so haven't been able to fix the behavior. Is there any way I can stop VS2008 IDE from littering my source code with these green dots and arrowheads whenever I press spacebar/tab? I would be really thankful for this help. • Synchronising local and remote DB

  Hi everyone, I have a general question about DB synchronisation. So, I'm developing a website locally (PHP + MySQL) and I would like to be able to synchronise at least the structure (and maybe the contents) of the two DB when one of the two is changed (normally I would change the local copy). Right now what I'm doing is to use mysqldump to dump the modified tables and then import them in the remote DB or do it by hand if the changes are minimal. However I find this tedious and error-prone. For the PHP I'm currently using Quanta+ which has the handy feature of finding files that have changed and just upload those. Is there something similar for MySQL? Otherwise how do you keep your DBs synchronised?   Hi, I'm trying to select no tabs at all in my application. At first the first tab is selected, but I'd like to deselect it so no tabs at all would be selected. • How to find out who's causing an access violation error?

  I'm getting reports that my app is causing a GPF on some Vista machines. The error message is something like this: access violation at 0x75784062 ( tried to write to 0x00000006) In order to fix this, I first need to know exactly who is causing this GPF: my main exe, some third party component, one of my own activex components, a dll, etc... How can I find this out? What tools can pinpoint the exact module that caused this mess? Any help would be greatly appreciated. PS My app is coded in VB6 and my activex controls are written in Delphi 2007.
