  Today I've encountered a very good book : UNIX to Linux® Porting: A Comprehensive Reference By Alfredo Mendoza, Chakarat Skawratananond, Artis Walker This reminded me of the thing I always wanted to know. "Porting Linux apps to Windows". I mean porting native Linux apps to native Windows with no platforms involved. If I can find any good book which explains this topic. I've lot of amazing linux command line tools in mind which needs a windows port. Please point me to relevant articles/tutorials/books. PS: please don't tell me to use linux emulation platforms like Cygwin.

• Why '.png' files produced by ImageMagick are so much bigger than '.jpg' & '.gif' files?

  Hello. I'm using ImageMagick to convert some files from one format to another. I was always under the impression that .png files were supposed to be as big/small as .jpg if not smaller, and definitely smaller than .gif. However when I run convert photo.jpg photo.png The files I'm getting out is about 6 times bigger than the original jpg. Original jpg is a regular photo about 300x500 px, 52 kb. Output is a proper png of the same dimensions, but size is about 307 kb? Does anyoone know what the hack is going on? Am I doing something wrong? P.S.: I tried both on Debian and Windows with the same results.

• Embed external images for use in HTML canvas?

  I'm using JavaScript to load an image into my Canvas element in Firefox. This works fine for local images, but throws a security exception for external images. Is there any way to avoid this security exception, one that does not involve my server having to act as proxy to load the image locally (because that would stress my server)? • Create a view like Tweetie's User Profile view

  Hi, I'm just wondering if anyone has any idea on how you can create a view that looks like the user profile view in apps like Tweetie, where there are seemingly multiple tables with a couple of normal (straight up and down tables) and then two rows of six cells, which in Tweeties case have the number of followers, following etc. I'm trying to make a similar view for my app, but can't seem to find out the best way to create it. Any tutorials, advice etc. would be appreciated. Thanks. P.S. Here's a picture of the view which I'm trying to recreate.

  I want to share java object between two forms using Spring IoC. It should acts like Registry: Registry.set("key", new Object()); // ... Object o = Registry.get("key"); // ... Registry.set("key", new AnotherObject()); // rewrite old object I tried this code to register bean at runtime: applicationContext.getBeanFactory().registerSingleton("key", object); but it does not allow to rewrite existing object (result code for checking and deleting existing bean is too complicated)... PS I am Java newbie, so mb I am doing it wrong and I should not use IoC at all... any help is appreciated...

  I just realized that my paypal ipn handler in php doesn't work anymore (and I change nothing), I use the sample php script provided by paypal.   assuming a yield of 3 per hour, that's 83000 hours. 8 hours a day makes 10,500 days, divide by thirty to get 342 mythical man months. I call them mythical because writing 125 tests per person per week is unreal. can any wise soul out there on SO shed some light on what sort of mythical men write unreal quantities of tests for large software projects? thank you. update chrisw thinks there are only 20k tests (check out his explanation below). PS I'd really like to hear from folks who have worked on projects with large test bases

• Rails plugin for generating dynamic / ajax crud interfaces compatible with Rails 3 beta?

  Anyone know of some good gems or plugins to create dynamic / ajax crud interfaces for Rails 3 projects? I know active scaffold was popular before and it's been awhile since I have used it / any other gems similar to this (I usually just write it myself). I like the direction that the formtastic gem (http://github.com/justinfrench/formtastic) is headed and wonder what else people are combining with it. Also I like the generators approach that Ryan Bates uses and he appears to be making updates for Rails 3. Anything else I am missing here? (I am also open to gems not compatible with Rails 3 too I guess, I can always make a contribution and try to help them get to the next phase. ;)) PS - Really stackoverflow, only one hyperlink?? lame.

• Getting wrong serial-port names from bluetoothdevice (c#)

  To get all avaliable Serialports from the system i use the following command. SerialPort.GetPortNames It works fine for the mainboard serial port, but with the bluetooth device i get the wrong portnames. For Example: Instead of COM7 i get sometimes COM70 or COM7ö. Its always 1 letter to much. any suggestens? PS: I am using newest Visual Studio Express in Windows 7 PPS: The dirty hack to cut the last letter didn't work because i don't know which one is the bluetooth serial port (with various bluetoothstick or devices it changes the number of the comport) and after trying various sticks i reached COM10, ergo COM100 or COM10f

  If you are familiar with TopCoder you know that your source-code gets a final "grade/points" this depends on time, how many compiles, etc, one of the highest weighted being performance. But how can they test that, is there some sort of simple code (java or c++) to do it that you could share for me to evaluate and hopefully write my own to test the programs I write for University? • How to do GUI for bash scripts?

  I want to do some graphic dialogs for my script but don't know how. I hear something about GTK-Server or something like that. If someone know how to link bash with tcl/tk I also be satisfied. Please do not post something like "change to C++" because my project must be a script in BASH, there are no other option. Any ideas? P.S. Sorry for bad english! EDIT: Thanks for answers but I don't want "graphics" like colors in console, but windows that shows like hmmmm..... net browser which I can move, minimalize etc. I will test xmessage, but I don't think that will be that what I searching for.   There are many approaches when it goes about running untrusted code on typical CPU : sandboxes, fake-roots, virtualization... What about untrusted code for GPGPU (OpenCL,cuda or already compiled one) ? Assuming that memory on graphics card is cleared before running such third-party untrusted code, are there any security risks? What kind of risks? Any way to prevent them ? (Possible sandboxing on gpgpu or other technique?) P.S. I am more interested in gpu binary code level security rather than hight-level gpgpu programming language security (But those solutions are welcome as well). What I mean is that references to gpu opcodes (a.k.a machine code) are welcome.

  I have to update the build number in assembly version of assemblyinfo.cs file. I have written a custom tasks which updates all the assmeblyinfo.cs under a solution before starting build. But when i change this file and try to build then some of my dlls which has reference of other dlls not able to compile as they dont find the specific version assembly. I have some files which uses strong name assembly also. Not sure how to update their version. I have tried setting specific version to false,but still same error is coming. Can you anybody tell me the good way to update the assemblyinfo.cs with incremental build number? P.S. i am using NANT tasks for automating by builds.

How could I order them? I probably have to write a many-to-many HQL query with the order-by clause? I though of passing the orderBy field name string to the query, or is there a better solution? Tables are: products, product_catalog, product_product_catalog (associative table) P.S. Using Play! Framework JPASupport for my entities.

  I am in a position where I could become a team leader of a team distributed over two countries. This team would be the tech. team for a start up company that we plan to bootstrap on limited funds. So I am trying to find out ways to minimize upfront expenses. Right now we are planning to use Java and will have a lot of junit tests. I am planing on using github for VCS and lighthouse for a bug tracker. In addition I want to add a continuous integration server but I do not know of any continuous integration servers that are offered as a web service. Does anybody know if there are continuous integration servers available in a software as a service model? P.S. if anybody knows were I can get these three services at one location that would be great to know to.

• SmartGWT Server File Browser

  Hi All: I have been looking for a SmartGWT example that would show me how to build a File Browser widget that takes the files from the local server's root directory. The user would be shown the files through the browser which they could then select to perform some processing operations. So far I have thought of using SmartGWT's Tree-Data Binding-Load from Local Data Widget and then grabbing a list of the directories using: new File("\").listFiles(); My Question is: Is there a better way to do this? Has someone already thought of this and has an example of their code that I can see? PS: I'm fairly new to GWT and Web Services but fairly competent with Java. If you believe there is a better way to do this (while still doing this through the web and not using Applets, please tell me). Thanks

• Google chrome, native client support and development

  Hey guys, I would like to write a small C++ app and run it on chrome using the native client API. I have a few questions though: 1) I compiled the examples on Ubuntu and ran the code on firefox but can't run it on chrome (using version 5.0.342.7 beta) Do I need to install something? An extension/plugin? 2) I can't find a single online application I could run? Links anyone, I want to see the power of this thing without having to compile the code locally. When I trying to open pages, which associated with microsoft.com (like ms live and others), my browser crashes. IE 8 crashes too. But Opera (I've installed it later) works fine with that pages. P.S. I tried to search the trojan software and viruses. But my PC is clean.

• Calling an svn update from a php script via a browser is not working

  Hey guys, I have two scripts. running an update and calling shell_exec('svn update') and shell_exec('svn st') running a mysqldump shell_exec('mysqldump params') The svn script is not running the update command, the svn st is printing results but not the svn update I tried to declare parameters when calling svn update eg 'svn update ' . dir . ' --username myuser --password mypasswd --non-interactive'; -- still nothing Played with most of the params If this is something related to binaries/permissions/groups, I don't see it. The mysqldump command works fine and is producing a file, so why isn't the svn updating the filesystem? Please do not advise using core SVN classes in PHP. This is not an option, I don't have complete control over the server and the module is not available. Thanks for your help, -hbt PS: important thing to mention here. The scripts works when called via the command line. It only fails when called via a web browser.

  Hi All While I am running on MS Access myapplication.mdb, I am always getting this error "Microsoft Office Access Has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience, send error to report , don't send...". I tried to create a new application.mdb then to import the database, the form and the modules but I couldn't because I'm getting the same error while I'm importing most of the modules. P.S.: I'm trying to import the modules one by one but for the majority of the modules I encounter this error. I tried to open an old version of myapplication.mdb then to import the updated modules but just when I selected the damaged application to import the updated module I got this famous error directly... Any help will be highly appreciated...

  Where can I get code example of using google docs with asp.net mvc? I need to upload documents and make it possible for people to download them.   I'm writing sql to search a database by a number of parameters. How would I go about ordering the result set by the items that match the most parameters in the where clause. For example: SELECT * FROM users WHERE username = 'eitan' OR email = '[email protected]' OR company = 'eitan' Username | email | company 1) eitan | [email protected] | blah 2) eitan | [email protected] | eitan 3) eitan | [email protected] | blah should be ordered like: 2, 3, 1.
