    Hello, Several server accounts where I run some scripts to extract data from databases have very limited tools available and on some of them you are not allowed (even by formal request) to use cron, than been said, can you recommend any tool(s) I can use to schedule the execution of the scripts (just like cron does)? Thanks ins advance :)

  • Kill all currently running cron jobs

    For some reason my cron job scripts aren't exiting cleanly and they're backing up my server. There are currently a couple hundred processes running for one of my users. I can use the following command to kill all processes by that user, but how can I simplify this to kill only crons? pgrep -U username | while read id ; do kill -6 $id ; done It would be dangerous to run the above command as is, correct? Wouldn't that kill mysql and other important things?

  • Most effective way to change Linux command prompt for all users?

    I have several machines and the hostnames are really long.. i.e. companyname-ux-staging-web1.companyname.com. So my prompt looks something like [root@mycompany-ux-staging-web1 ~]# I'd like to shorten that up for all users on all machines with the least amount of work. From what I read I have a couple options, but they all have their drawbacks. I could change the hostname, but that would likely affect applications. Not a great choice. I could alter also $PS1 at login for all users by editing all .bashrc for existing users, and edit /etc/skel/.bashrc for potential new users. That's a lot of work across 10 machines. What's my best option or what have I overlooked?

  • find directories in the current directory, older than 5 days and archive them

    This is basic questions. I need to find folders in the current working directory(not recursively) and if they are older than 5 days archive them. zip or tar.gz is fine. I can find the folders with following commands find ./ -maxdepth 1 -type d -mtime +5 And i know i can pass this output of the find using xargs. But i do not know how to archive with folder name intact. That is the directory test1 should be archived to test1.zip and directory "test2" should be archived to "test2.zip". Any inputs are welcome.   • ipfw is blocking access to a script

    I need to figure out how to troubleshoot why ipfw is blocking my script. This script parses out some rss feeds over the net. I have about 10 different feed urls. About 5 or 6 of these urls are returning xml, the others are timing out. If I turn the firewall off, they will all work. The issue I'm having is that I have no idea what port I need to open for the urls that are timing out. Is there a command that will show me this?

How do I remove this annoying message that is appended to all pages ?

  • Running a script on startup before X starts in Ubuntu 9.10

    I have a script that I want to run at startup to switch X-configs depending on location, but I can't seem to find out where to put it in order to get it to run before X is started. This results in me having to restart X to get it to run the correct config. Currently, my script is located in /etc/init.d/whereami, with symlinks in /etc/rc[2-5].d/S25whereami. I was trying to find out when X is started, in case the problem is simply the 25, but I can't seem to find the answer... Any help is appreciated.

  • Better way to do "echo $x | sed ..." and "echo $x | grep ..."

    I often find this in scripts (and, I have to admit, write it myself): a=`echo $x | sed "s/foo/bar/"` or if echo $x | grep foo then ... fi Consider "foo" to include some regex stuff. I feel that there should be - and most likely is - a better way to phrase this, one that does not involve two commands and a pipe but wraps the thing into some more compact expression. I just can't find it. Anybody?

    I am trying to run a small script - test - on ubuntu box. It is as follows: var1 = bash var2 = /home/test/directory ... ... <some more variable assignments and then program operations here> ... ... Now every time I run it, then it throws errors: root@localhost#/opt/test /opt/test: line 1: var1: command not found /opt/test: line 3: var2: command not found ... ... more similar errors ... Can someone help me understand what is wrong in this script? Many thanks.

    I have a directory tree of files I need to loop through and reformat the lines. can I do this with sed with some combination of find? for each file, I'll need to adjust the text in the file from ... * @category Foo * @package Bar ... into just this (Remove the @category line, but prepend the value to the package annotation value) ... * @package Foo/Bar ... what is the most efficient way of doing this? its a few hundred files that will be modified.

  • How can I tell when an FTP is complete?

    I have a cron job that processes files that my client's upload via FTP to my FreeBSD server. The cron job runs once an hour, and normally processing each file only takes a few seconds. The cron job looks in the client's upload directory and moves any new files to a tmp directory. It then processes the file(s) and moves them into a final directory where they are then available to the public through a website. The problem is, every once in awhile, the cron job runs just as a new file is being uploaded. It moves the half-uploaded file to the tmp directory, and tries to process it, and fails, of course. Question: how can I determine if the uploaded file is complete? The only thing I can think of is checking the file size to see if it's changing, but that seems like a kludge. Is there some sort of flag or something that is set when the upload is complete?

  • Architectural approaches to creating a game menu/shell overlay on PC/Linux?

    I'm am working on a collection of games for a custom digital tabletop installation (similar to Microsoft Surface tables). Each game will be an individual executable that runs full-screen. In addition, there needs to be a menu/shell overlay program running simultaneously. The menu/shell will allow users to pause games, switch to other games, check their game history, etc. Some key requirements of the shell: it intercepts all user input (mainly multitouch) first before passing it on to the currently running game (so that it can, for instance, know to pop-up at a "pause" command); can reveal on arbitrary portions of the screen, with the currently running (but presumably paused) game still showing underneath, ideally with its shape/size being dynamic, to allow for creation of an animated in/out drawer effect over the game. I'm currently looking into different architectural approaches to this problem, including Fraps and DirectX overlays, but I'm sure I'm missing some ways to think about this. What are the main approaches I should be considering? (Note the table is currently being run by Windows PC, but it could potentially be a Linux box instead.)

  • What is the *right* way to use gnome-shell integrated chat?

    Please bear with me as I am still figuring out how to use gnome-shell. My question concerns how to use the integrated chat correctly. I have the following questions: 1) When people chat with me, it pops up as a notification on the hidden bar at the bottom of the screen, and then that chat stays there so I can access it later. How do I initiate a chat in this manner, without opening an empathy window? What I have been doing is Hitting super key Typing in the person's name, which brings up contacts Initiate the chat using empathy Immediately close the chat window When the person responds, it comes through as a notification. I then proceed to interact with the chat this way. 2) What is the keyboard shortcut for bringing up the notifications bar? Ideally, I would like to have the following experience Use some keyboard shortcut to bring up notifications Begin typing the name of the notification that I wish to investigate, and have the matching work in a fuzzy manner, much like Ido mode's buffer switching matching in Emacs When then right name is matched, I hit enter and then bring up the chat with that person as that popup notification. Are these behaviours supported? If not, I would be happy to work on implementing them. I am an experienced programmer, but not familiar with gnome-shell. If someone would point me in the right direction in terms of if this behaviour is supported, or where in the gnome-shell framework would I add to to get this behaviour, I would really appreciate it.
