• Is it possible to temporarily disable non-global zones?

  I frequently need to install a package on the global zone for a quick test on a development box. When there are multiple prompts for one package I have to answer them for each zone. If the zone is not running then I need to wait for the zone to start up, answer the prompts, etc. This is particularly annoying when if I'm getting packages from http://www.sunfreeware.com and using the pkg-get utility which nicely pulls in dependencies for you. Can I disable the zones temporarily? I haven't found a way to do this. Thanks.

• Automating silent software deployments on Solaris 10

  Hello everyone. Essentially, the question I'd like to ask is related to the automation of software package deployments on Solaris 10. Specifically, I have a set of software components in tar files that run as daemon processes after being extracted and configured in the host environment. Pretty much like any server side software package out there, I need to ensure that a list of prerequisites are met before extracting and running the software. For example: Checking that certain users exists, and they are associated with one or many user groups. If not, then create them and their group associations. Checking that target application folders exist and if not, then create them with preconfigured path values defined when the package was assembled. Checking that such folders have the appropriate access control level and ownership for a certain user. If not, then set them. Checking that a set of environment variables are defined in /etc/profile, pointed to predefined path locations, added to the general $PATH environment variable, and finally exported into the user's environment. Other files include /etc/services and /etc/system. Obviously, doing this for many boxes (the goal in question) by hand can be slow and error prone. I believe a better alternative is to somehow automate this process. So far I have thought about the following options, and discarded them for one reason or another. 1) Traditional shell scripts. I've only troubleshooted these before, and I don't really have much experience with them. These would be my last resort. 2) Python scripts using the pexpect library for analyzing system command output. This was my initial choice since the target Solaris environments have it installed. However, I want to make sure that I'm not reinveting the wheel again :P. 3) Ant or Gradle scripts. They may be an option since the boxes also have java 1.5 enabled, and the fileset abstractions can be very useful. However, they may fall short when dealing with user and folder permissions checking/setting. It seems obvious to me that I'm not the first person in this situation, but I don't seem to find a utility framework geared towards this purpose. Please let me know if there's a better way to accomplish this. I thank you for your time and help.

I found on http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc787567(v=WS.10).aspx that the 4 means "Batch logon type is used by batch servers, where processes may be executing on behalf of a user without their direct intervention." which really doesn't shed any light on it for me. I checked the services and they are all logging in as local system or network service. Nothing for administrator. Anyone have any idea how I tell where these are coming from? • Thunderbird segmentation fault problem

  Hey all, my thunderbird crashes few seconds after it boots up regardless of in safe mode or normal, here is a strace log: http://pastebin.com/tccfYwcD I've searched google, ubuntu forums, and mozilla bug tracker about this problem, but any of found answers did not helped me :/ I've tried: nscd daemon install solutions posted earlier fresh clean instal of ubuntu 10.10 (32b) and thunderbird 3.1.7 from repos on a VM - problem still exists removed all thunderbrid related dot files and dot dirs, and setup profile from beginning Remove thunderbird and related stuff with apt purge, and install tb from official .deb package None of these steps helps me, tb still crashes with segmentation fault :/ I use gmail IMAP account, I've searched and found few other tips on google, but with no success. I've even tried to remove mails from web gui, that came after first notice of problem, still no luck. I'm not using any network fs, and not sharing this account with anyone, and I do not use filesystem or home encryption either just clean install :/ If You guys need some more info for this let me know.   On the NIST website, there is a tool called sts (Statistical Test Suite) that allow us to rest the validity of a pseudo-random number generator based on a stream of bits in input. When running the program, there is two variables I am not sure to understand : the stream length and number of bitstream. Is the stream length the size of the file ? The number of bit inside ? The size of a bitstream ? Are the bitstreams subset of the whole file ? Chosen how ? Let say I have a text file containing 1,000,000 bits in ascii. What should be my arguments ? • How does pptpd (poptop) or pppd work with eap-tls and mppe-128?

  To create a VPN I've installed pptpd on an Ubuntu domU (Debian domUs can also be created). MSCHAPv2 isn't a very strong authentication protocol so I'd like to use EAP-TLS. I've set up a FreeRADIUS server and certificates for EAP-TLS before (for use with WPA), and I've also set up a pptp server with mschap-v2 auth, but I can't figure out how to combine the two. Maybe pppd can use EAP-TLS on its own, but I can't find support for it in the Ubuntu package. If I need to patch the package, that's fine, I know how to patch Debian packages (provided the patch applies cleanly). Also, can MPPE still be used when pppd is configured to use EAP? Because it says in the manual several times that MPPE requires MSCHAP. However, other docs like this one: http://www.nikhef.nl/~janjust/ppp/ seem to refute that. The clients are running Mac OS X Leopard and GNU/Linux, there's no need to fix anything for Windows.

• Updating autoreconf

  So I need to use the autoreconf to configure a package. However I need at least version 2.61. I'm on CentOS 5.8 and it seems like there's no package for it so I went on to compile it myself. So I get the source of autoconf from http://www.gnu.org/software/autoconf/ and compiled that. And sure when I do autoconf -V it shows up as version 2.68 which is indeed the latest version. However autoreconf (nothing the re) still shows up as the old version 2.59 which causes me some problems. So could someone help a relatively new linux user, updating autoreconf properly? Thanks

• Do I need to recompile PHP to make use of CURL API?

  I have both Apache and PHP set up manually, albeit the latter without CURL. There is this jungle of instructions and explanations on extensions for PHP. I have a very straightforward question - what do I need to do to enable CURL in a more dynamic way. I resent the idea of static linking, in fact I hate and avoid static linking like the plague. Is it possible to have my Apache and PHP understand that there is CURL in town? I can compile CURL if necessary. Package management may be out of the question, because I built PHP myself - I am on Ubuntu, and it does not provide PHP without Suhosin and a a whole lot of time, so I removed it and built PHP myself. The whole slew of related questions simply propse installing "php5-curl" package, which is exactly one thing I CANNOT do since it installs it in a completely unrelated directory, which my PHP does not even seem to bother linking to.

• Is it safe to expect Sun Java 6 to supported for the life of RHEL 6?

  I'm in the planning stages of a java application that we're targeting for Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6. Unfortunately, we're stuck at RHEL 6.1 which does not ship the java-1.7.0-oracle package set (they were added in 6.3) and I don't really have any control over when we will be upgraded to the more recent version. I don't have any specific technical requirements to use Java 7, but Java 6 is going to hit public EOL in February 2013. Am I safe to assume that since Red Hat (and subsequently Oracle with its Oracle Unbreakable Linux) has shipped a copy of Java 6 in the java-1.6.0-sun package, it will support it for the entire 10 year support life of RHEL6?

  Yesterday I installed .Net Framework 4 as it was required by Liquid XML Studio, but just after installing it, My SQL Server Management Studio stopped working. As soon as open the IDE I get package microsoft sql management studio package failed to load I tried pretty much all the solution posted on the internet but could not get it working, today when I removed the .Net Framework 4, SQL server management studio started working again. Then just to test, I installed the .Net Framework 4 back ... and I started getting the same problem in management studio. I want both on my machine ! how can i do it ? PS : OS is Windows 7

  I am in a similar situation as question Can I fine-tune my screen brightness? . For me, Thinkpad T420s and Ubuntu Studio 11.10. The brightness keys work fine but the increments are too large. I have the /sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0 and I can see the value of actual_brightness changing as I use the brightness keys - it changes between values 0,3,6,9,12,15. None of the listed answers for fine control works here, as follows: As the root user I can echo integers to brightness in the above folder. As an ordinary user I cannot. I do not have /usr/sbin/gnome-power-backlight-helper (because I'm using xfce perhaps?), and not sure what package it's from or if installing such a package would make sense since it's not what's currently managing the backlight. How can it be done, please?

  Forgive me if this is a stupid question or an inapproptiate place to ask. This is my first time attempting to download source by means of bazaar (launchpad). Regardless of the package or branch... I have looked all over and cannot find an answer. What does this mean? How can I resolve it? I'm going to be using it as a general purpose server with a web server, git server, etc. Now, the package is fairly cheap, but in exchange in there's little to no auxiliary functionality, including an absence of nameservers. So, given that I have a domain name and full root access to the VPS, is it possible to configure a nameserver on the VPS for the VPS? That is, I want to link my domain name to my server without the need for an additional server. Thanks

  I have a windows 2k8 machine that generated almost 40,000 WinEventLog:System events in the period of about 20 minutes. The breakdown of these events by eventcode was approximately: 4373 46% 4371 46% 4383 7% 4372 1% Microsoft-Windows-Servicing seemed to go crazy for a short time.... looking at updates, changing the state of updates etc. What could have caused this? UPDATE: Many of the events seem to come in pairs of: Windows Servicing started a process of changing package KBfoobar state from Installed(Installed) to Installed(Installed) and Windows Servicing successfully set package KBfoobar state to Installed(Intstalled)

• Where to set java heap options (e.g. -Xmx) for Tomcat 6 under Ubuntu 9.04?

  I'm running Tomcat using the tomcat6 package from Ubuntu 9.04, which makes a daemon out of Tomcat using jsvc. I'd like to know the proper way to set Java heap options like -Xmx for Tomcat. I'd like to put the configuration wherever is most stylistically correct, and wherever is least likely to be overwritten by Ubuntu package updates. The options I see right now: Hard-code them somewhere in /etc/init.d/tomcat6. Hard-code them somewhere in /usr/share/tomcat6/bin/catalina.sh. Create a line in /usr/share/tomcat6/bin/startup.sh to set CATALINA_OPTS to have the desired flags, and then export CATALINA_OPTS as an environment variable. (This looks like it will get picked up by catalina.sh.) The last option sounds like the best one, and it's advocated (without explanation of why) at http://serverfault.com/questions/121038/increasing-javas-heapspace-in-tomcat-startup-script. But I wanted to get a second opinion. Anyone want to confirm that there isn't a better way?

• Alien: .rpm -> .deb | Compability / Built per system?

  At the moment I'm playing a bit with alien (for OpenVZ packages on Debian) and was wondering myself about one question for which I was not able to find an answer anywhere. Therefor I thought it might be smart to ask here :) The question is... If I convert a .rpm to .deb on a system, how compatible is this .deb package? What do I mean? Will the .deb be working on other systems as well or is it per-system, e.g. that on every system the .deb package will be little different? That i386 and x86_64 are different is clear, so this doesn't need to be answered :) Examples that would be nice to know are for example: .deb built on Debian 6 64-bit - Ubuntu 12.04 64-bit (compatible?) .deb built on Debian 6 64-bit - Debian 5 64-bit (compatible?) etc. Thanks anyone reading this / helping me! • Ubuntu Studio 10.4 boots to terminal mode only

  I did clean install from ISO DVD. It boots only to command line asking for login. After I login I enter STARTX and desktop appears and some of the studd actually works, but there are a lot of problems: there is no way to reboot or shut down except to stopx/logoff and enter shutdown sound system doesn't respond pulse audio volume control gives "connection failed, connection refused" DVD drives not available GDebi Package installer is grayed out and so I can't use it (but synaptic package manager works OK) Software Center won't start when clicked -- it just stops trying DBus cant run because it says /usr/local/var/run/dbus/system_bus_socket file not found (also /var/run/dbus/system_bus_socket file not found) There's just a lot of things wrong and I can't help but think something is missing or was mis-coded in the distro so that there are typos in some script somewhere. If anyone can tell me where to begin to untangle this mess I'd appreciate it, but I think it all begins when it can't start the GUI automatically and I need to enter STARTX.

• Problem transferring file to FTP server - 503 Could not create file

  I try to transfer a file from SSIS package to a FTP server provided by my client. When I try connecting and transfer using a FTP tool (WinSCP) manually it works fine and file was transferred. But when i use the ftp command in command prompt and try to transfer using "send" command i get an error "553 could not create file". This also happens from SSIS package. I'm not in control of the FTP server but if anyone can provide a solution I can pass it to the admin or anything to be done from my end?

• Upgrading Fedora on Amazon to 12 but getting libssl.so.* & libcrypto.so.* are missing

  I am upgrading to Fedora 12 on a Amazon EC2 using help here: http://www.ioncannon.net/system-administration/894/fedora-12-bootable-root-ebs-on-ec2/ I managed to do a 64 bit instance OK, however facing some problems with a standard one. On the final bit of the install from 11 to 12 I am getting an error: Error: Missing Dependency: libcrypto.so.8 is needed by package httpd-tools-2.2.1.5-1.fc11.1.i586 (installed) Error: Missing Dependency: libssl.so.8 is needed by package httpd-tools-2.2.1.5-1.fc11.1.i586 (installed) This is referenced in the comments from the link above but all it says is: Q: Apache failed, or libssl.so.* & libcrypto.so.* are missing A: These versions are mssing the symlinks they require. Easy fix, go symlink them to the newest versions in /lib However I am afraid I don't know how to do this. If it is any help I tried running the command locate libssl.so and got: /lib/libssl.so.0.9.8b /lib/libssl.so.6

• When resizing Windows Explorer on Windows 8 it crashes?

  I have following problem: When I try to change size of any explorer window from maximized to some size getting following screen It blinks 20-30 times, then crashes.
