While we have really excellent product documentation (including the best set of manual pages available on any UNIX or Linux platform), the various How To Guides we have help to complement some of that learning, giving administrators a chance to learn the motivations for different technologies with a simple set of examples. • Windows Physical Direct Memory Mapping

  I'm a bit disappointed there is almost no discussion of this no matter where I look so I guess I'll have to ask. I'm writing a cross platform memory bench marking application which requires direct physical address mapping rather than virtual addressing. EDIT The solution would look something like the Linux/Unix system calls: int fd = open("/dev/mem", O_RDONLY); mmap(NULL, len, PROT_READ, MAP_SHARED, fd, PHYSICAL_ADDRESS_OFFSET); which will require the kernel to either give you a virtual page mapping to the desired physical address or return that it failed. This does require supervisor privileges but that is ok. I have seen a lot of information about shared memory and memory mapped files but all of these reside on disc and are thus not really useful when I'm trying to make a system dependent read. It is very similar to writing an IO driver although I do no need write permissions to the physical address. This site gives an example of how to do it on a driver level using the Windows Driver Kit: NT Insider: Sharing Memory between drivers and applications This solution would probably require Visual Studio which currently I do not have access to. (I have downloaded the WDK api but it complained about my use of GCC for Windows). I'm traditionally a Linux programmer so I'm hoping there might be something really simple I'm missing. • How to get "Fn" keys to work (Asus 4830T)? (specificly, the "suspend" key)

  I've got an Asus 4830T onto which I've just re-installed 12.04 because I installed an SSD. I was running 12.04 before too, which had been upgraded over a few releases. At some point on that old install, I had gotten all the "Fn" keys to work, or at least all the ones I cared about. (Oh except I think the screen brightness keys never worked.) I have no recollection of what I did. Anyway now things are fine, and some of the Fn keys work: the one to turn of the trackpad and the one to turn off wireless (grr I hate that one). However, the "suspend" key for some reason does not work. Now the system will suspend and resume just fine, but I'm having to do it from the menu. Is there an easy (or hard) way to make those work? I'm running straight Ubuntu but with Xfce installed as my normal desktop. (In other words, it's not Xubuntu, though I doubt it matters.) I recall at some point having found some arcane mapping mechanism to bind the Fn keys to actions, but I can't find it now. (I'm perfectly OK with editing weird files; I'm a long-time Unix user.) (Very long-time.)

• Samba issue with sharing directories on NTFS/FAT32 (Mounted Drives) ???

  Hi guys, I have some strange problems with Samba server. I am using samba Version 3.5.4 on Ubuntu 10.10. I have two windows-xp machines, one on VirtualBox on Ubuntu and another office laptop. Windows machine on VBox has no issues in accessing the shared folders, but the laptop is not able to access all the shared content. The issue faced on laptop is = Shared folders on Ext3 drives have no issues in accessing, but the contents shared on NTFS and FAT32 drives (mounted ones) are not accessible. When I try to open the shared folder, it asks for user name and password, but doesn't accept when I provide it. (even if I provide admin login details!!!). I changed workgroup value to the domain_name in office laptop, but still the problem persists... Here is the smdb.conf I am using... • What is the R Language?

  I encountered the R Language recently with O'Reilly books and while from the context I knew it was a language for dealing with statistics, doing a web search for the support web site was futile. However I have now located the web site and it is at http://www.r-project.org/R is a free language available for a number of platforms including windows. CRAN mirrors are available at a number of locations worldwide.Here is the official description:"R is a language and environment for statistical computing and graphics. It is a GNU project which is similar to the S language and environment which was developed at Bell Laboratories (formerly AT&T, now Lucent Technologies) by John Chambers and colleagues. R can be considered as a different implementation of S. There are some important differences, but much code written for S runs unaltered under R. R provides a wide variety of statistical (linear and nonlinear modelling, classical statistical tests, time-series analysis, classification, clustering, ...) and graphical techniques, and is highly extensible. The S language is often the vehicle of choice for research in statistical methodology, and R provides an Open Source route to participation in that activity. One of R's strengths is the ease with which well-designed publication-quality plots can be produced, including mathematical symbols and formulae where needed. • Cryptswap not mounted?

  I believe i have my swap set up but am not sure because on start up it says that it is something along the lines of "could not mount /dev/mapper/cryptswap1 M for manual S for skip". But it appears to be mounted. • Ubuntu Server 12.04 as a router. Problem with DNS?? Or Routing table?

  I have a virtualbox lab made up of 4 Windows 2008 R2 servers (DC/DNS,SQL,SHAREPOINT, EXCHANGE) that are configured with static ip addresses with NIC's attached to Internal network. Everything works. I had the requirement to execute some tests that also access external services available on the internet. To keep things clean and similar to the production environment I have installed another VM, with Ubuntu Server 12.04 64 bit and configured (I hope) to work as a router like described on this post. This VM has two network interfaces: first is Bridged with the host and is used as a WAN connection and the other one attached in the Internal Network with its own static IP address on the internal network subnet. But actually the Windows servers does not connect to the internet while the unix one connects. I did a route command. this is the result: Kernel IP Routing table Destination Gateway Genmask Flags Metric Ref Use Iface default 10.69.121.1 0.0.0.0 UG 100 0 0 eth0 10.69.121.0 * 255.255.255.0 U 0 0 0 eth0 192.168.83.0 * 255.255.255.0 U 0 0 0 eth1 Can somebody help me with this configuration? :) Thanks! Addendum: I forgot to mention that one of the windows server hosts a DNS service for which I should maybe configure a forwarding server but I do not exactly know which server to forward on... :(

• Mobile development, recommended computer configuration?

  Hi, For the last 4 weeks, I have been trying to get into mobile development. Done a couple of tutorials, read some books, developed a couple of dummy Android apps. The thing is my computer is a 5 years old laptop, it is slow and time has come to replace it and I’m looking at different offers online. Have you got any recommendations? Is there any must-have that should make my developer life easier in the future? Is there anything specific that may be useful at a more advanced stage of development that I just can’t think of right now on the hardware side? (I mean apart from good proc, lots of RAM, many USB ports...) One thing I can think of is to have three OS on the same workstation: Windows, Unix and MacOS (so far I focused on android/java/eclipse but am interested in Iphone/objC/xcode as well) but that’s more on the software side. Anyway, would be grateful for any recommendations. Thanks in advance! Mikael PS: I’m quite free on the budget side of things PPS: I'm aware it's not really a programming question but will still be of interest to some programmers here.

• No operating system found even when grub2 was reinstalled

  I know there have been many variations on this question and have certainly tried to do my research. I don't really know what I'm doing so I would rather not take risks. I am trying to dual boot xubuntu and windows 7. I started out with xubuntu and just installed windows. Of course, the mbr got overwritten and windows didn't seem to recognize linux. So I booted to the live cd and rewrote the mbr. And of course, now I get the error "No Operating System Found" on startup. • Unable to start Ubuntu 12.04. The system is running in low-graphics

  I am a newbie to Ubuntu. I installed Ubuntu 12.04 using a USB Stick and it was running all fine for a few weeks and this error popped up. According to one of my friend, the best way was to re-install Ubuntu. Being from a non unix background i thought the same too and after the second install it happened again, but only this time was much quicker, in 3 days. I don't want to re-install Ubuntu every time this happens. I am a complete newbie to Linux which means that i am really bad at using terminal. I know there are other people who fixed this issue using this very same forum, but unfortunately the answers provided are too complex for me to understand. Please let me know how to do this. Things I want to let you know: I would need help step by step if that is alright with you. After i get the error i get the options and i click exit to console login I get the following message in a black screen (which i think is a command line sort of thing): * Stopping save kernel messages [OK] apache2: Could not reliably determine the server's fully qualified domain name,using 127.0.1.1 for ServerName [OK] * Starting web server apache2 and a blinking cursor. So basically it looks like a dead end for my non unixy eye. And one final thing is before this issue had happened i had tried configuring Python to Apache2. For that i had uninstalled and installed LAMP server several time and edited the configuration files too. I don't know if this really is a concern, but I don't know.. I have a USB with Ubuntu 12.04 in it so i can install it anytime. (But i want to know what the issue is rather than running away) . I migrated to Ubuntu from Windows and i have no plans to go back. I think that's from my side. Please let me know if there are any questions.

• Can I set up samba so it automatically allows all the local usernames and passwords?

  I have set up samba like this (this is the complete smb.conf): [global] log file = /var/log/samba/log log level = 2 security = user [homes] browsable = false read only = no valid users = %S I'd like to enable every user on server to access their home directories, but for some unknown reason only my 'administrator' account can do so. (I have done that with ftp before, but now smb is also needed). When I try to smbclient -L localhost -U [user], I get NT_STATUS_LOGON_FAILURE, except with the administrator (which is the user created during the ubuntu installation, not root). The samba log file says NT_STATUS_NO_SUCH_USER: [2012/04/04 20:26:02.081454, 2] smbd/reply.c:554(reply_special) netbios connect: name1=LOCALHOST 0x20 name2=DIALER-X 0x0 [2012/04/04 20:26:02.081733, 2] smbd/reply.c:565(reply_special) netbios connect: local=localhost remote=dialer-x, name type = 0 [2012/04/04 20:26:02.087200, 2] auth/auth.c:314(check_ntlm_password) check_ntlm_password: Authentication for user [public] - [public] FAILED with error NT_STATUS_NO_SUCH_USER I suspect that I have to manually create samba users, but the man pages state that If the client has passed a username/password pair and that username/password pair is validated by the UNIX system's password programs, the connection is made as that username. To me that sounds like as long as the provided username/password is a valid login on the server, it should work. Am I missing something totally obvious? I don't want / can't afford to manually update the samba users and passwords to match the server's. 11.10

• Cross-platform builds with OGRE3D via CMake. Any tips?

  I've been trying to compile a simple project for both OSX and Windows platforms, using OGRE3D, but I've got some problems on the way. I'm using CMake to create my platform specific project files (VS solution & Xcode project). Some problems I found are: OGRE3D source is distributed in 2 flavors, Windows sources and UNIX/OSX sources. In OSX, compiling dependencies (freetype, FreeImage and specially OIS) is such a pain. I don't know how to handle precompiled dependencies (they exist for both Win & Mac). May sound like a noob question, but I would appreciate some tips on this. Resources, forum posts, anything. There exists any "cross-platform base project for OGRE3D" on the net? Would be really helpful if someone who already managed to do this can bring some light. Btw, I'm not basing the project on OGRE3D, it's just that is the biggest library I'm probably using, so I depend a lot on it. Thanks in advantage!

• Game programming : C# or C++?

  Ok so the faq says : "What language should I learn next? (Unless you have a specific requirement and don't know which language meets that requirement.)" so I guess this is not against the rules of questions. So, I've decided what I really want is to do Game Programming. So the question is, as a 18 years old who wants to learn self taught programming, what is the most suited programming language between C# and C++? ( I should state that I don't care about unix because I believe windows will be still the most used os ) I know the basics of C++, but none about C#. I know that C++ has more tutorials guides, dlls and stuff like that, while C# doesn't, but it's far easier to learn and to use for a single person to develop a program, but I've read even if the program is obfuscated it's easy to get the source of it. Well, I kinda want to focus on basic a lot first, I must say that I have a preference for C++ just because it feels more suitable to me, but I must consider that I work alone.. So even if I like it, it may not be the best thing to do. I am really not sure of which one to go for, i've read a lot of threads on various websites and it looks like C# is becoming more popular than C++. But yeah, that said, I also specified I want to do Game Programming. So I need to know some better points than just "C# is easier because of .net memory handling while C++ isnt" because I couldn't just find it. I hope the thread won't be closed because I've read the faq and I have a specific requirement. Thank you, and if you need more details you're free to ask me, but I think just by saying game programming and that I'd work alone should be enough!

• No sound, can't adjust alsamixer volume

  I have no sound on my ubuntu and I do not know why. I saw a lot of posts about that, I tried a lots of solutions that I found (especially this one) but it still does not work. I suspect alsamixer. • Is there a better way to organize my module tests that avoids an explosion of new source files?

  I've got a neat (so I thought) way of having each of my modules produce a unit-test executable if compiled with the -DTESTMODULE flag. This flag guards a main() function that can access all static data and functions in the module, without #including a C file. From the README: -- Modules -- The various modules were written and tested separately before being coupled together to achieve the necessary basic functionality. Each module retains its unit-test, its main() function, guarded by #ifdef TESTMODULE. `make test` will compile and execute all the unit tests, producing copious output, but importantly exitting with an appropriate success or failure code, so the `make test` command will fail if any of the tests fail. • Looking for some advice on the next steps to take [closed]

  I am looking for some advice on the next step to take in development of my programming skills. I was directed here when asking this question on Stack Overflow. What I know already Have a solid grasp of xhtml, xml, php, javascript, MySQL, actionscript. Have a working knowledge of vb, and have a slight grasp of java from tinkering with a minecraft server. Some brief exposure to the Unreal Engine in college. Some skills with sql server, ms sql, office integration, etc. Also some knowledge of Asterix and PBX/VOIP. Been coding off and on since the age of 8 but I have no computer science education aside from what I have taught myself or learned from work/freelance. I work in OSX mostly, but can use/troubleshoot windows and ubuntu fluently also. Decent with both UNIX and DOS CLI. What I'm considering I'm looking to learn a scripting language to build web apps, help streamline my home server that I am building and run shell scripts. Being able to help code games later is a big plus. My Question Between java, ruby, perl, and python, which would be the best investment of my time considering what I already know and what direction I would like to take my skillset? What are good resources for your suggested direction? Thanks in advance.

• C# calendar needs Business Logic for real-time reminders? [on hold]

  I am not a super experienced C# user, though I have some experience in .Net and VB.Net. Just got this new job and my first assignment is a mission critical part of the business. It is pretty important I get it right so I was hoping for some sage advice. We have created a calendar using jQuery, C#, .Net & SQL Server 08. The calendar works but now we are wanting to add email, SMS and voice-call reminders. We are a small company and can do whatever we need to do with no restrictions on our IT environment. I have some base-line experience with Unix servers but would prefer to stay in the Micro$oft universe if it is prudent to do so. I know how to add the API calls and services to initiate these reminders (using built in email services for email and Twilio.com for SMS). I am asking for advice about how to approach a reliable and timely listener service that knows when to call the service or API for the reminder before an appointment. EG. SMS: "You have a conference call in 30 minutes." I have done some research, but it is hard to know what is a proven reliable approach. What I am looking for is an experienced opinion on a good (or the best) strategy for implementing a solution that will reliably listen for appointments and dispatch the reminders when needed.
