• Reset user passwd when you don't know it

  I have a small problem. I have shared keys setup on my domain, so I never type my password to login anymore. I've forgotten my password now. This is a problem because only my user can sudo. Password authentication for root has been disabled, so without my password, I cannot do maintenance on my web server. Is there a way to reset my password as my [now only] key-authenticated user? Specifically, can this be done on CentOS 4?

• Intraforest user account merge with Active Directory

  I have a scenario where there is a root domain (RD) and two child domains (CD1 and CD2). Users have accounts on both CD1 and CD2, with identical samAccountNames, names etc, and various applications either use the CD1 or CD2 account for authentication to resources. I need to collapse CD2 into CD1, so I want to merge the accounts together. However ADMT does not allow me this option (merge options are greyed out), I think because it does not support intraforest merge of accounts (although it does not explicitly state this anywhere in the documentation). My question is - what is the easiest way for me to merge these accounts? Ultimately all I really need (I think) is for the SID of CD2\user1 to be added to the SIDHistory of CD1\user1 - is there a tool that supports this? Computer accounts and profiles are not a concern for this scenario. Group migration is unlikely to be an issue either - CD2\user1 is usually granted resource access through membership of a group on CD1.

• Exchange 2003 HTTP Account Error

  We are trying to get one of our users connected to our Exchange 2003 server using the HTTP method as they already have an existing Exchange account on another server. The setup goes through and they appear to get connected fine however none of the subfolders are listed. Instead we get one folder of "Error-Pls file a Bug". The usual Google search just throws up nothing useful. Does anyone know how to fix this? Or has anyone actually gotten Outlook (2003 or 2007) to connect to an Exchange 2003 server?

• Control copy/paste doesn't work

  I have a laptop HP PAVILION dv6-3126er with Windows 7 Home Edition installed and neither control copy nor control paste doesn't work (i've tried: ctrl+c, ctrl+v, shift+c, shift+v, ctrl + insert, shift + insert). I've tried to run a system check through cmd with sfc /scannow, it repaired something, i restarted but it didn't solve the problem. I've also tried many key combinations (like alt+ctrl+fn), but nothing works in any program. In Microsoft Word 2003 in the menu i have no key combination for copy/paste near them (in my previous comp they've been there - in brackets). Shift+Delete works by the way. I brought this laptop a few weeks ago, and i discovered this problem in the first days. I have no viruses because i have had no time to even connect him to internet. Anyways, i checked it for viruses - it is clean. I don't want to do system restore, because i see no reason to do it for a pretty clean system. I hope it is not a problem with the laptop itself. Maybe there is another reason? Maybe i need to do some more system checks? Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

• Logon Failure: the target account name is incorrect after making a ghost image of a server

  I recently replaced a failing SCSI drive in a Windows 2000 server with an IDE drive. I made an image of the SCSI drive and Ghosted it. The purpose of the machine was to give out DHCP at one location and host a couple of files. When I restarted the machine with the new drive, DHCP appears to be working fine, but I cannot get to any of the shares. Instead, I get the following message when attempting to navigate using Explorer. Logon Failure: the target account name is incorrect It appears that this machine is not communicating with the main domain controller. Changes to user accounts (performed on the domain controller) are not replicated on this machine.

  Hi there, I have running a Windows XP SP3 Machine and I can't login after I have locked my Workstation. I changed my password and installed last Updates from Microsoft last Friday.   Hello everyone I am using microsoft exchange 2003 on windows 2003 small business server. For the past month or so, the archiver account has been receiving multiple copies (about 15 or so) of each and every email. edit: All copies share the same Message ID. The machine that hosts exchange is updated religiously and an antivirus scan is run on a daily basis. So would anyone please have any ideas about how to deal with this and furthermore, how i would be able to delete the multiple copies of emails from outlook 2003 inbox. • Trouble creating FTP in Server 2008

  I have been trying to create an FTP server on my new Server 2008. I have been following both (very detailed and highly published here guides) For setting up using IIS Manager http://learn.iis.net/page.aspx/321/configure-ftp-with-iis-7-manager-authentication/ and For anonymous FTP http://www.trainsignaltraining.com/windows-server-2008-ftp-iis7 I am able to log as an anonymous user. My need is to use a named user, so I need to use the IIS Manager. I get error 530 when trying to log as a user. Connected to 127.0.0.1. 220 Microsoft FTP Service User (127.0.0.1:(none)): ftpmanager 331 Password required for ftpmanager. Password: 530-User cannot log in. Win32 error: Logon failure: unknown user name or bad password. Error details: Filename: Error: 530 End Login failed. ftp> I can not learn from this message anything. My password is set to: 1234 (so I don't think I make a mistake here - testing purposes only ofc) Thank you. Note - I went over other posts on SE that I read, and couldn't get the result: IIS7 Windows Server 2008 FTP -> Response: 530 User cannot log in. FTP Error 530, User cannot log in, home directory inaccessible. Having trouble setting up FTP server on Windows Server 2008 EDIT I think I found some errors with the physical path. Going to Basic settings, and Test Connection on the physical path, gave me the following error: The server is configured to use pass-through authentication with a built-in account to access the specified physical path. However, IIS Manager cannot verify whether the built-in account has access. Make sure that the application pool identity has Read access to the physical path. If this server is joined to a domain, and the application pool identity is NetworkService or LocalSystem, verify that \$ has Read access to the physical path. Then test these settings again. I am not sure which/whom should get access to the Root folder !? I want to point out, I managed to login with a domain user (change authorization and authentication methods) but this is NOT the requested solution. I checked to make sure that the FTP, folders, access is working properly. I am bit lost here. ==== More tries: I have enabled another Allow rule for ALL Users. I still get the same error. It seems that it doesn't matter if i use a correct or wrong password, I still get Error 530.

  My SQL Server Windows service is set to use the NETWORK SERVICE account. The server is installed to C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL10_50.MSSQLSERVER\MSSQL. However looking at the permissions on that folder, NETWORK SERVICE does not have any permissions. The groups which are allowed access to that folder are... CREATOR OWNER - who is this? SYSTEM - sounds fine - so that Windows can access the folder I presume? SQLServerMSSQLUser$Computer_Name$MSSQLSERVER - this is the interesting one - what is this? Administrators Users If NETWORK SERVICE is a user with minimal permissions on the system and looks to the O/S as someone connecting from a network how does it have permissions to access any files in the SQL Server install folder?   I am having difficulty on our ubuntu server whereby I have an SSH user that when I create files using this user the ownership is web_user:www-data The problem is when a file is uploaded or created using a content management system like joomla. When files are uploaded through Joomla - such as components / modules... The ownership is set to www-data:www-data This means that I need to then chown all new files to web_user:www-data so we can edit the files. Is there a way to set for a directory and sub-directories that all new files created have the ownership of web_user:www-data? Do I need to use something like setuid or setgid? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

• Best practice to create an ftp administrator account on vsftpd

  Background: My manager would like me to create an administration account for out FTP server. When logged in via ftp, it should instantly display all of the home directories of the users, and be able to modify any directory or file in any way possible. What would be the best way to go about this? I planned on chrooting this ftp admin to /home, but I don't know how to properly go about the permissions. Maybe make a group called ftp_admins, and chgrp the /home folder? But then wouldn't it affect the users accessing their folders? any help is appreciated.

• Windows XP - non-user input data filter message after installing wireless keyboard & mouse

  After I installed MS wireless keyboard and mouse and associated software, I started getting this annoying message titled "Hardware installation" telling me the software I am trying to install did not pass the XP logo tests. The software is for "HID non-user input data filter" and I have two options Continue anyway or stop installation. Now, if I try to continue the installation fails, if stop installing another message pops up with a little mouse logo and the whole process repeats itself. after I am done with that message a third dialog appears. This is happening every time I boot up my PC (a desktop), I tried following an advice I found in some forum and download windows update for ID non-user input data filter, but that installation failed as well. The thing is, that both keyboard and mouse are working fine Is there anyway to get past these dialogs ?

  I'm a computer technician and help customers everyday with their computers and smartphones and have a really basic (i think) request but dont know how to go about it. Customer always come in with broken phones, water damage, needing updates, or just want me to backup their information. I currently have a program that i use when i backup their computers it backups their iOS folder C:\Users\USER\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup but what i want is a quick easy way to do this in customers houses. What i require is a way when i plug in a USB drive it AUTOMATICALLY searches for the folder and starts transferring the folder to a predefined folder on the USB drive. This was I can just plug it in and begin work on their computer or phone without the risk of losing their information. I'm sure there is a .bat/.ini file i could use but wondering if someone has already done this or something similar as I would need it to search all the USER folders not just the one I'm logged into.   my computer can catch the signal for many Access Points for the same network, while the network has problem with internet connection in some APs and it's working in others "all APs have the same SSID" Please advice if as i user i can force my computer to connect with specific AP neither than to go with the one with higher power (through MAC adress or IP)?. I am sure that my computer catch more than 10 signals for APs"All with same SSID". I am using windows 7 home primume 64 bit. as a user i dont have access to the AP config.

  Hi, Lets say I am user: bob & group: users. There is this file: -rw----r-- 1 root users 4 May 8 22:34 testfile First question, why can't bob read the file as it's readable by others? Is it simply that if you are denied by group, then you are auto-blacklisted for others? I always assumed that the final 3 bits too precedence over user/group permission bits, guess I was wrong... Second question, how is this implemented? I suppose it's linked to the first query, but how does this work in relation to Access Control, is it related to how ACLs work / are queried? Just trying to understand how these 9 permission bits are actually implemented/used in Linux. Thanks alot.

  I created a JavaScript file, and named it test.user.js. I tried double clicking it, dragging & dropping it into Chrome and opening it with Chrome, but it won't install. I've already installed the dev version of Chrome, because it's stated somewhere that it's needed, but I can't get it to work. Then, I tried searching for a Chrome Greasemonkey addon, just to see that it was no further developed on, because Chrome has built-in support.   My W8 machine is connected to domain zen. If I rdp to the W8 machine, I can log in as a local user without problems. If I try to log in as a domain user, I am prompted for a smart card instead of a password. Any ideas why? Note that Interactive login: require smart card is disabled in group policy: And here is the output from rsop.msc: Some additional information on this one. If my connecting machine is on the same domain/network as the W8 machine, then I am prompted for a password as usual. If the machine is remote, on a different domain, then I am prompted for a smart card. In addition, the machine I am connecting from that gets the smartcard prompt is an XP box. I haven't isolated exactly which of these factors triggers the different response.

  As a web hoster, it is very easy to notice the large amounts of exploit/abuse attempts done on my servers. Out of curiosity, how often are these attempts done on the average user? I'm assuming almost all of them are prevented just by simple security protocols in place by their browsers, local network, etc. How many attempts, on average, are committed against a single user daily through any method? (email, internet, downloads, etc.)? If known, what percentage of these things are blocked by the average users security? I tried googling but I was having a hard time getting the right search terms together.

• Jail user to home directory while still allowing permission to create and delete files/folders

  I'm trying to give a client SFTP access to the root directory of their site on my server (Ubuntu 10.10) so they can manager their website themselves. While I have been successful in jailing a user to a directory and giving them SFTP access; they are only allowed to create and delete new files in sub directories (the directories they own). This means that I must give them access to the parent directory to the root of their site. How can I limit them to the root of their site (for example public_html) while still allowing them the ability create and delete files. All the tutorials I have read suggest that the root must be the owner of the user's home directory, which prevents them from write access inside that directory. I'm relatively new to managing my own server so any advice would be very grateful. Many thanks.

• Is there a word processor similar to MS Word which saves files as readable txt files?

  I'm writing a paper together with my supervisor and would like to have a more sophisticated version control than *_291112_NEW_NEW_revised1.doc files. My supervisor is a non-computer person will never ever use LaTeX or git and loves MS Word. I'm therefore looking for an alternative to Word (I need commenting on text passages!) which stores the files as clean text (Markup for formating is fine), so I'm able to put them under version control on my side. I'm aware that git can also handle binary files, but I'd prefer the cleaner way of looking at the contents directly. If there's a way to automatically extract the text from word files, I'm fine with that too for now.

  I'm looking to create a macro in Excel 2007 which will do the following: copy the formatting and values from a sheet called 'report', insert this into a new workbook, naming the file with the value in 'B9' and appending the word 'report' to this when copying the data into a new workbook, the formatting of the original should be retained, but cell contents pasted as values rather than formulas prior to saving the file with the above name, the user will be prompted to choose their folder at the end, a message will be displayed alerting the user that the file has been saved successfully Any assistance would be much appreciated.
