• asp.net doesn't render Sys.WebForms.PageRequestManager._initialize code

- by ajitatif
i'm using the ASP.NET 2.0 Ajax Extensions on a web site. as always, everything is fine on local but the remote web site does not use ajax calls. my local server has the ASP.NET Ajax extensions installed but the remote one doesn't. i know that i should be able to use the Ajax extensions without installing them. so in turn, i added the extensions' .dll among the web site's references but still no luck. after my further investigation, i found out that local and remote pages have exactly the same HTML code rendered, except that the local (working) one has these lines // Sys.WebForms.PageRequestManager._initialize('ctl00$ContentPlaceHolder1$ScriptManager1', document.getElementById('aspnetForm')); Sys.WebForms.PageRequestManager.getInstance()._updateControls(['tctl00$ContentPlaceHolder1$updReportArgs','tctl00$ContentPlaceHolder1$updReport'], ['ctl00$ContentPlaceHolder1$chkTumu','ctl00$ContentPlaceHolder1$btnGetir'], [], 90); // obviously, these are the lines of code that make callbacks possible. the question is why doesn't asp.net render these lines? what could be missing? by the way, the ScriptResource.axd and WebResource.axd doesn't give a 404 or anything, i can see through their js codes via Firebug. and one more thing: i'm unsure if it is related or not, but there are client-side asp.net validators on the page whose js code are not rendered either. again, those work fine locally. for further investigation you can see the remote site here : http://www.ajitatif.com/subdomains/nazer/Raporlar/danismanbasarim.aspx

• Login as SYS user to Oracle 11g from .NET

- by Jens Bannmann
Using the Oracle Data Provider for .NET, my application connects to the database using the privileged SYS user. The connection string is as follows: Data Source=MyTnsName;User ID=sys;Password=MySysPassword;DBA Privilege=SYSDBA This works fine with Oracle 10, but Oracle 11 keeps complaining about an invalid username or password. I verified that the password is correct - other apps work fine with the same credentials. Note that for regular users (without the DBA Privilege part), connecting to Oracle 11 works perfectly. So, what's wrong? Update: This is not an issue with case sensitivity - when constructing the connection string, the password case is not altered by my code, and the password works fine with other, non-.NET-applications. I suspect that this might be caused by the Oracle 10 client I'm using to connect to the 11 database. Oracle states that the client is upward-compatible, the only drawback being that you cannot use some new features of the database. However, SYSDBA connections clearly are not a new Oracle 11 feature, and - again - a non-.NET-app (Keeptool Hora) can connect using the same setup. Any other ideas? Update 2: The problem persists when using an Oracle 11 client :-(

• Interactive Data Language, IDL: Does anybody care?

- by Alex
Anyone use a language called Interactive Data Language, IDL? It is popular with scientists. I think it is a poor language because it is proprietary (every terminal running it has to have an expensive license purchased) and it has minimal support (try searching for IDL, the language, right now on stack) . I am trying to convince my colleagues to stop using it and learn C/C++/Python/Fortran/Java/Ruby. Does anybody know about or even care about IDL enough to have opinions on it? What do you think of it? Should I tell my colleagues to stop wasting their time on it now? How can I convince them? Edit: People are getting the impression that I don't know or use IDL. Also, I said IDL has minimal support which is true in one sense, so I must clarify that the scientific libraries are indeed large. I use IDL all the time, but this is exactly the problem: I am only using IDL because colleagues use it. There is a file format IDL uses, the .sav, which can only be opened in IDL. So I must use IDL to work with this data and transfer the data back to colleagues, but I know I would be more efficient in another language. This is like someone sending you a microsoft word file in an email attachment and if you don't understand how wrong that is then you probably write too many words not enough code and you bought microsoft word. Edit: As an alternative to IDL Python is popular. Here is a list of The Pros of IDL (and the cons) from AstroBetter: Pros of IDL Mature many numerical and astronomical libraries available Wide astronomical user base Numerical aspect well integrated with language itself Many local users with deep experience Faster for small arrays Easier installation Good, unified documentation Standard GUI run/debug tool (IDLDE) Single widget system (no angst about which to choose or learn) SAVE/RESTORE capability Use of keyword arguments as flags more convenient Cons of IDL Narrow applicability, not well suited to general programming Slower for large arrays Array functionality less powerful Table support poor Limited ability to extend using C or Fortran, such extensions hard to distribute and support Expensive, sometimes problem collaborating with others that don’t have or can’t afford licenses. Closed source (only RSI can fix bugs) Very awkward to integrate with IRAF tasks Memory management more awkward Single widget system (useless if working within another framework) Plotting: Awkward support for symbols and math text Many font systems, portability issues (v5.1 alleviates somewhat) not as flexible or as extensible plot windows not intrinsically interactive (e.g., pan & zoom) Pros of Python Very general and powerful programming language, yet easy to learn. Strong, but optional, Object Oriented programming support Very large user and developer community, very extensive and broad library base Very extensible with C, C++, or Fortran, portable distribution mechanisms available Free; non-restrictive license; Open Source Becoming the standard scripting language for astronomy Easy to use with IRAF tasks Basis of STScI application efforts More general array capabilities Faster for large arrays, better support for memory mapping Many books and on-line documentation resources available (for the language and its libraries) Better support for table structures Plotting framework (matplotlib) more extensible and general Better font support and portability (only one way to do it too) Usable within many windowing frameworks (GTK, Tk, WX, Qt…) Standard plotting functionality independent of framework used plots are embeddable within other GUIs more powerful image handling (multiple simultaneous LUTS, optional resampling/rescaling, alpha blending, etc) Support for many widget systems Strong local influence over capabilities being developed for Python Cons of Python More items to install separately Not as well accepted in astronomical community (but support clearly growing) Scientific libraries not as mature: Documentation not as complete, not as unified Not as deep in astronomical libraries and utilities Not all IDL numerical library functions have corresponding functionality in Python Some numeric constructs not quite as consistent with language (or slightly less convenient than IDL) Array indexing convention “backwards” Small array performance slower No standard GUI run/debug tool Support for many widget systems (angst regarding which to choose) Current lack of function equivalent to SAVE/RESTORE in IDL matplotlib does not yet have equivalents for all IDL 2-D plotting capability (e.g., surface plots) Use of keyword arguments used as flags less convenient Plotting: comparatively immature, still much development going on missing some plot type (e.g., surface) 3-d capability requires VTK (though matplotlib has some basic 3-d capability)

• Why do I get a segmentation fault while redirecting sys.stdout to Tkinter.Text widget in Python?

- by Brent Nash
I'm in the process of building a GUI-based application with Python/Tkinter that builds on top of the existing Python bdb module. In this application, I want to silence all stdout/stderr from the console and redirect it to my GUI. To accomplish this purpose, I've written a specialized Tkinter.Text object (code at the end of the post). The basic idea is that when something is written to sys.stdout, it shows up as a line in the "Text" with the color black. If something is written to sys.stderr, it shows up as a line in the "Text" with the color red. As soon as something is written, the Text always scrolls down to view the most recent line. I'm using Python 2.6.1 at the moment. On Mac OS X 10.5, this seems to work great. I have had zero problems with it. On RedHat Enterprise Linux 5, however, I pretty reliably get a segmentation fault during the run of a script. The segmentation fault doesn't always occur in the same place, but it pretty much always occurs. If I comment out the sys.stdout= and sys.stderr= lines from my code, the segmentation faults seem to go away. I'm sure there are other ways around this that I will probably have to resort to, but can anyone see anything I'm doing blatantly wrong here that could be causing these segmentation faults? It's driving me nuts. Thanks! PS - I realize redirecting sys.stderr to the GUI might not be a great idea, but I still get segmentation faults even when I only redirect sys.stdout and not sys.stderr. I also realize that I'm allowing the Text to grow indefinitely at the moment. class ConsoleText(tk.Text): '''A Tkinter Text widget that provides a scrolling display of console stderr and stdout.''' class IORedirector(object): '''A general class for redirecting I/O to this Text widget.''' def __init__(self,text_area): self.text_area = text_area class StdoutRedirector(IORedirector): '''A class for redirecting stdout to this Text widget.''' def write(self,str): self.text_area.write(str,False) class StderrRedirector(IORedirector): '''A class for redirecting stderr to this Text widget.''' def write(self,str): self.text_area.write(str,True) def __init__(self, master=None, cnf={}, **kw): '''See the __init__ for Tkinter.Text for most of this stuff.''' tk.Text.__init__(self, master, cnf, **kw) self.started = False self.write_lock = threading.Lock() self.tag_configure('STDOUT',background='white',foreground='black') self.tag_configure('STDERR',background='white',foreground='red') self.config(state=tk.DISABLED) def start(self): if self.started: return self.started = True self.original_stdout = sys.stdout self.original_stderr = sys.stderr stdout_redirector = ConsoleText.StdoutRedirector(self) stderr_redirector = ConsoleText.StderrRedirector(self) sys.stdout = stdout_redirector sys.stderr = stderr_redirector def stop(self): if not self.started: return self.started = False sys.stdout = self.original_stdout sys.stderr = self.original_stderr def write(self,val,is_stderr=False): #Fun Fact: The way Tkinter Text objects work is that if they're disabled, #you can't write into them AT ALL (via the GUI or programatically). Since we want them #disabled for the user, we have to set them to NORMAL (a.k.a. ENABLED), write to them, #then set their state back to DISABLED. self.write_lock.acquire() self.config(state=tk.NORMAL) self.insert('end',val,'STDERR' if is_stderr else 'STDOUT') self.see('end') self.config(state=tk.DISABLED) self.write_lock.release()

• What is the mysql 5.5 equivalent for the sys.dm_fts_index_keywords_by_document in sql 2008

- by djsurge
I'm making a web application that uses the data in the sys.dm_fts_index_keywords_by_document. I'm interested how many times a given term occurs in each string that is indexed. For example, I have a table with a column called comments, the table has various strings in the comments field. When I make that column full text searchable, the dm_fts_index_keywords_by_document is created and I can see the word per document data. Can i do the same thing in mySQL?

• Ajax, Callback, postback and Sys.WebForms.PageRequestManager.getInstance().add_beginRequest

- by user338262
Hi, I have a user control which encapsulates a NumericUpDownExtender. This UserControl implements the interface ICallbackEventHandler, because I want that when a user changes the value of the textbox associated a custom event to be raised in the server. By the other hand each time an async postback is done I shoe a message of loading and disable the whole screen. This works perfect when something is changed in for example an UpdatePanel through this lines of code: Sys.WebForms.PageRequestManager.getInstance().add_beginRequest( function (sender, args) { var modalPopupBehavior = $find('programmaticSavingLoadingModalPopupBehavior'); modalPopupBehavior.show(); } ); The UserControl is placed inside a detailsview which is inside an UpdatePanel in an aspx. When the custom event is raised I want another textbox in the aspx to change its value. So far, When I click on the UpDownExtender, it goes correctly to the server and raises the custom event, and the new value of the textbox is assigned in the server. but it is not changed in the browser. I suspect that the problem is the callback, since I have the same architecture for a UserControl with an AutoCompleteExtender which implement IPostbackEventHandler and it works. Any clues how can I solve this here to make the UpDownNumericExtender user control to work like the AutComplete one? This is the code of the user control and the parent: using System; using System.Web.UI; using System.ComponentModel; using System.Text; namespace Corp.UserControls { [Themeable(true)] public partial class CustomNumericUpDown : CorpNumericUpDown, ICallbackEventHandler { protected void Page_PreRender(object sender, EventArgs e) { if (!Page.IsPostBack) { currentInstanceNumber = CorpAjaxControlToolkitUserControl.getNextInstanceNumber(); } registerControl(this.HFNumericUpDown.ClientID, currentInstanceNumber); string strCallServer = "NumericUpDownCallServer" + currentInstanceNumber.ToString(); // If this function is not written the callback to get the disponibilidadCliente doesn't work if (!Page.ClientScript.IsClientScriptBlockRegistered("ReceiveServerDataNumericUpDown")) { StringBuilder str = new StringBuilder(); str.Append("function ReceiveServerDataNumericUpDown(arg, context) {}").AppendLine(); Page.ClientScript.RegisterClientScriptBlock(typeof(CorpNumericUpDown), "ReceiveServerDataNumericUpDown", str.ToString(), true); } nudeNumericUpDownExtender.BehaviorID = "NumericUpDownEx" + currentInstanceNumber.ToString(); ClientScriptManager cm = Page.ClientScript; String cbReference = cm.GetCallbackEventReference(this, "arg", "ReceiveServerDataNumericUpDown", ""); String callbackScript = "function " + strCallServer + "(arg, context)" + Environment.NewLine + "{" + Environment.NewLine + cbReference + ";" + Environment.NewLine + "}" + Environment.NewLine; cm.RegisterClientScriptBlock(typeof(CustomNumericUpDown), strCallServer, callbackScript, true); base.Page_PreRender(sender,e); } [System.ComponentModel.Browsable(true)] [System.ComponentModel.Bindable(true)] public Int64 Value { get { return (string.IsNullOrEmpty(HFNumericUpDown.Value) ? Int64.Parse("1") : Int64.Parse(HFNumericUpDown.Value)); } set { HFNumericUpDown.Value = value.ToString(); //txtAutoCompleteCliente_AutoCompleteExtender.ContextKey = value.ToString(); // TODO: Change the text of the textbox } } [System.ComponentModel.Browsable(true)] [System.ComponentModel.Bindable(true)] [Description("The text of the numeric up down")] public string Text { get { return txtNumericUpDown.Text; } set { txtNumericUpDown.Text = value; } } public delegate void NumericUpDownChangedHandler(object sender, NumericUpDownChangedArgs e); public event NumericUpDownChangedHandler numericUpDownEvent; [System.ComponentModel.Browsable(true)] [System.ComponentModel.Bindable(true)] [System.ComponentModel.Description("Raised after the number has been increased or decreased")] protected virtual void OnNumericUpDownEvent(object sender, NumericUpDownChangedArgs e) { if (numericUpDownEvent != null) //check to see if anyone has attached to the event numericUpDownEvent(this, e); } #region ICallbackEventHandler Members public string GetCallbackResult() { return "";//throw new NotImplementedException(); } public void RaiseCallbackEvent(string eventArgument) { NumericUpDownChangedArgs nudca = new NumericUpDownChangedArgs(long.Parse(eventArgument)); OnNumericUpDownEvent(this, nudca); } #endregion } ///
/// Class that adds the prestamoList to the event ///
public class NumericUpDownChangedArgs : System.EventArgs { ///
/// The current selected value. ///
public long Value { get; private set; } public NumericUpDownChangedArgs(long value) { Value = value; } } } using System; using System.Collections.Generic; using System.Text; namespace Corp { ///
/// Summary description for CorpAjaxControlToolkitUserControl ///
public class CorpNumericUpDown : CorpAjaxControlToolkitUserControl { private Int16 _currentInstanceNumber; // This variable hold the instanceNumber assignated at first place. public short currentInstanceNumber { get { return _currentInstanceNumber; } set { _currentInstanceNumber = value; } } protected void Page_PreRender(object sender, EventArgs e) { const string strOnChange = "OnChange"; const string strCallServer = "NumericUpDownCallServer"; StringBuilder str = new StringBuilder(); foreach (KeyValuePair<String, Int16> control in controlsToRegister) { str.Append("function ").Append(strOnChange + control.Value).Append("(sender, eventArgs) ").AppendLine(); str.Append("{").AppendLine(); str.Append(" if (sender) {").AppendLine(); str.Append(" var hfield = document.getElementById('").Append(control.Key).Append("');").AppendLine(); str.Append(" if (hfield.value != eventArgs) {").AppendLine(); str.Append(" hfield.value = eventArgs;").AppendLine(); str.Append(" ").Append(strCallServer + control.Value).Append("(eventArgs, eventArgs);").AppendLine(); str.Append(" }").AppendLine(); str.Append(" }").AppendLine(); str.Append("}").AppendLine(); Page.ClientScript.RegisterClientScriptBlock(typeof(CorpNumericUpDown), Guid.NewGuid().ToString(), str.ToString(), true); } str = new StringBuilder(); foreach (KeyValuePair<String, Int16> control in controlsToRegister) { str.Append(" funcsPageLoad[funcsPageLoad.length] = function() { $find('NumericUpDownEx" + control.Value + "').add_currentChanged(").Append(strOnChange + control.Value).Append(");};").AppendLine(); str.Append(" funcsPageUnLoad[funcsPageUnLoad.length] = function() { $find('NumericUpDownEx" + control.Value + "').remove_currentChanged(").Append(strOnChange + control.Value).Append(");};").AppendLine(); } Page.ClientScript.RegisterClientScriptBlock(typeof(CorpNumericUpDown), Guid.NewGuid().ToString(), str.ToString(), true); } } } and to create the loading view I use this: //The beginRequest event is raised before the processing of an asynchronous postback starts and the postback is sent to the server. You can use this event to call custom script to set a request header or to start an animation that notifies the user that the postback is being processed. Sys.WebForms.PageRequestManager.getInstance().add_beginRequest( function (sender, args) { var modalPopupBehavior = $find('programmaticSavingLoadingModalPopupBehavior'); modalPopupBehavior.show(); } ); //The endRequest event is raised after an asynchronous postback is finished and control has been returned to the browser. You can use this event to provide a notification to users or to log errors. Sys.WebForms.PageRequestManager.getInstance().add_endRequest( function (sender, arg) { var modalPopupBehavior = $find('programmaticSavingLoadingModalPopupBehavior'); modalPopupBehavior.hide(); } ); Thanks in advance! I have a problem with UpdatePanels and IE6. ( Sys.WebForms.PageRequestManagerParserErrorException ) The version of .NET is 2.0. The strange thing is that if i open Fiddler to capture the requests, IE6 starts working ok!.. If i close Fiddler, then IE6 starts to report the problem. The problem is that i can't see the request because when Fiddler is monitoring, the error stops appearing. Any suggestions ? Thanks

• SQL Azure Database Size Calculator

- by kaleidoscope
A neat trick on how to measure your database size in SQL Azure. Here are the exact queries you can run to do it: Select Sum (reserved_page_count) * 8.0 / 1024 From sys.dm_db_partition_stats GO Select sys.objects.name, sum (reserved_page_count) * 8.0 / 1024 From sys.dm_db_partition_stats, sys.objects Where sys.dm_db_partition_stats.object_id = sys.objects.object_id Group by sys.objects.name The first one will give you the size of your database in MB and the second one will do the same, but break it out for each object in your database. http://www.azurejournal.com/2010/03/sql-azure-database-size-calculator/ Ritesh, D

• What is hiberfil.sys and How Do I Delete It?

- by The Geek
You’re no doubt reading this article because there’s a gigantic hiberfil.sys file sitting in the root of your drive, and you want to get rid of it to free up some space… but you can’t! Luckily, you actually can delete it, and today we’ll show you how. The more memory you have in your PC, the bigger the file will be. So What is hiberfil.sys Anyway? Windows has two power management modes that you can choose from: one is Sleep Mode, which keeps the PC running in a low power state so you can almost instantly get back to what you were working on. The other is Hibernate mode, which completely writes the memory out to the hard drive, and then powers the PC down entirely, so you can even take the battery out, put it back in, start back up, and be right back where you were. Hibernate mode uses the hiberfil.sys file to store the the current state (memory) of the PC, and since it’s managed by Windows, you can’t delete the file. So if you never use it, and want to disable Hibernate mode, keep reading. Personally I stick with Sleep Mode the vast majority of the time, but I do use Hibernate quite often. Disable Hibernate (and Delete hiberfil.sys) in Windows 7 or Vista You’ll need to open an administrator mode command prompt by right-clicking on the command prompt in the start menu, and then choosing Run as Administrator. Once you’re there, type in the following command: powercfg -h off You should immediately notice that the Hibernate option is gone from the Shut down menu. You’ll also notice that the file is magically gone! For more about dealing with Hibernate like setting how long it takes to head into Hibernate mode, you can check out our article on How to Manage Hibernate Mode in Windows 7. Disabling Hibernate Mode in Windows XP It’s a lot easier in Windows XP to get rid of Hibernate mode… in fact, we’ve already covered it before, but we’ll cover it again. Just head into Control Panel –> Power Options, and then find the Hibernate tab. Uncheck the box, reboot your PC, and then you can delete the hiberfil.sys file. • Getting SQL table row counts via sysindexes vs. sys.indexes

- by Bill Osuch
Among the many useful SQL snippets I regularly use is this little bit that will return row counts in a table: SELECT so.name as TableName, MAX(si.rows) as [RowCount] FROM sysobjects so JOIN sysindexes si ON si.id = OBJECT_ID(so.name) WHERE so.xtype = 'U' GROUP BY so.name ORDER BY [RowCount] DESC This is handy to find tables that have grown wildly, zero-row tables that could (possibly) be dropped, or other clues into the data. Right off the bat you may spot some "non-ideal" code - I'm using sysobjects rather than sys.objects. What's the difference? In SQL Server 2005 and later, sysobjects is no longer a table, but a "compatibility view", meant for backward compatibility only. SELECT * from each and you'll see the different data that each returns. Microsoft advises that sysindexes could be removed in a future version of SQL Server, but this has never really been an issue for me since my company is still using SQL 2000. However, there are murmurs that we may actually migrate to 2008 some year, so I might as well go ahead and start using an updated version of this snippet on the servers that can handle it: SELECT so.name as TableName, ddps.row_count as [RowCount] FROM sys.objects so JOIN sys.indexes si ON si.OBJECT_ID = so.OBJECT_ID JOIN sys.dm_db_partition_stats AS ddps ON si.OBJECT_ID = ddps.OBJECT_ID AND si.index_id = ddps.index_id WHERE si.index_id < 2 AND so.is_ms_shipped = 0 ORDER BY ddps.row_count DESC

• What happens when you add/remove current site as trusted site?

- by kasey
What happens when you add/remove the current site, while logged on, as a trusted site? When users do this on our website, and then try to click on a link or close the browser, they get the following JavaScript exception: "Microsoft JScript runtime error: 'type' is null or not an object" in the below library code at the line "var etype = this.type = e.type.toLowerCase();" Sys.UI.DomEvent = function Sys$UI$DomEvent(eventObject) { ///
///  /// <field name="altKey" type="Boolean" locid="F:J#Sys.UI.DomEvent.altKey"></field> /// <field name="button" type="Sys.UI.MouseButton" locid="F:J#Sys.UI.DomEvent.button"></field> /// <field name="charCode" type="Number" integer="true" locid="F:J#Sys.UI.DomEvent.charCode"></field> /// <field name="clientX" type="Number" integer="true" locid="F:J#Sys.UI.DomEvent.clientX"></field> /// <field name="clientY" type="Number" integer="true" locid="F:J#Sys.UI.DomEvent.clientY"></field> /// <field name="ctrlKey" type="Boolean" locid="F:J#Sys.UI.DomEvent.ctrlKey"></field> /// <field name="keyCode" type="Number" integer="true" locid="F:J#Sys.UI.DomEvent.keyCode"></field> /// <field name="offsetX" type="Number" integer="true" locid="F:J#Sys.UI.DomEvent.offsetX"></field> /// <field name="offsetY" type="Number" integer="true" locid="F:J#Sys.UI.DomEvent.offsetY"></field> /// <field name="screenX" type="Number" integer="true" locid="F:J#Sys.UI.DomEvent.screenX"></field> /// <field name="screenY" type="Number" integer="true" locid="F:J#Sys.UI.DomEvent.screenY"></field> /// <field name="shiftKey" type="Boolean" locid="F:J#Sys.UI.DomEvent.shiftKey"></field> /// <field name="target" locid="F:J#Sys.UI.DomEvent.target"></field> /// <field name="type" type="String" locid="F:J#Sys.UI.DomEvent.type"></field> var e = Function._validateParams(arguments, [ {name: "eventObject"} ]); if (e) throw e; var e = eventObject; var etype = this.type = e.type.toLowerCase(); this.rawEvent = e; this.altKey = e.altKey; if (typeof(e.button) !== 'undefined') { this.button = (typeof(e.which) !== 'undefined') ? e.button : (e.button === 4) ?   • What's up with LDoms: Part 9 - Direct IO

- by Stefan Hinker
In the last article of this series, we discussed the most general of all physical IO options available for LDoms, root domains. Now, let's have a short look at the next level of granularity: Virtualizing individual PCIe slots. In the LDoms terminology, this feature is called "Direct IO" or DIO. It is very similar to root domains, but instead of reassigning ownership of a complete root complex, it only moves a single PCIe slot or endpoint device to a different domain. Let's look again at hardware available to mars in the original configuration: root@sun:~# ldm ls-io NAME TYPE BUS DOMAIN STATUS ---- ---- --- ------ ------ pci_0 BUS pci_0 primary pci_1 BUS pci_1 primary pci_2 BUS pci_2 primary pci_3 BUS pci_3 primary /SYS/MB/PCIE1 PCIE pci_0 primary EMP /SYS/MB/SASHBA0 PCIE pci_0 primary OCC /SYS/MB/NET0 PCIE pci_0 primary OCC /SYS/MB/PCIE5 PCIE pci_1 primary EMP /SYS/MB/PCIE6 PCIE pci_1 primary EMP /SYS/MB/PCIE7 PCIE pci_1 primary EMP /SYS/MB/PCIE2 PCIE pci_2 primary EMP /SYS/MB/PCIE3 PCIE pci_2 primary OCC /SYS/MB/PCIE4 PCIE pci_2 primary EMP /SYS/MB/PCIE8 PCIE pci_3 primary EMP /SYS/MB/SASHBA1 PCIE pci_3 primary OCC /SYS/MB/NET2 PCIE pci_3 primary OCC /SYS/MB/NET0/IOVNET.PF0 PF pci_0 primary /SYS/MB/NET0/IOVNET.PF1 PF pci_0 primary /SYS/MB/NET2/IOVNET.PF0 PF pci_3 primary /SYS/MB/NET2/IOVNET.PF1 PF pci_3 primary All of the "PCIE" type devices are available for SDIO, with a few limitations. If the device is a slot, the card in that slot must support the DIO feature. The documentation lists all such cards. Moving a slot to a different domain works just like moving a PCI root complex. Again, this is not a dynamic process and includes reboots of the affected domains. The resulting configuration is nicely shown in a diagram in the Admin Guide: There are several important things to note and consider here: The domain receiving the slot/endpoint device turns into an IO domain in LDoms terminology, because it now owns some physical IO hardware. Solaris will create nodes for this hardware under /devices. This includes entries for the virtual PCI root complex (pci_0 in the diagram) and anything between it and the actual endpoint device. It is very important to understand that all of this PCIe infrastructure is virtual only! Only the actual endpoint devices are true physical hardware. There is an implicit dependency between the guest owning the endpoint device and the root domain owning the real PCIe infrastructure: Only if the root domain is up and running, will the guest domain have access to the endpoint device. The root domain is still responsible for resetting and configuring the PCIe infrastructure (root complex, PCIe level configurations, error handling etc.) because it owns this part of the physical infrastructure. This also means that if the root domain needs to reset the PCIe root complex for any reason (typically a reboot of the root domain) it will reset and thus disrupt the operation of the endpoint device owned by the guest domain. The result in the guest is not predictable. I recommend to configure the resulting behaviour of the guest using domain dependencies as described in the Admin Guide in Chapter "Configuring Domain Dependencies". Please consult the Admin Guide in Section "Creating an I/O Domain by Assigning PCIe Endpoint Devices" for all the details! As you can see, there are several restrictions for this feature. It was introduced in LDoms 2.0, mainly to allow the configuration of guest domains that need access to tape devices. Today, with the higher number of PCIe root complexes and the availability of SR-IOV, the need to use this feature is declining. I personally do not recommend to use it, mainly because of the drawbacks of the depencies on the root domain and because it can be replaced with SR-IOV (although then with similar limitations). This was a rather short entry, more for completeness. I believe that DIO can usually be replaced by SR-IOV, which is much more flexible. I will cover SR-IOV in the next section of this blog series.

• Do backend developers care what their code looks like in the frontend?

- by benhowdle89
As a backend and a frontend developer I see the process from start to finish, first by creating the logic, displaying the correct data on a web page and then using frontend skills to make this look awesome. My question is, do pure backend developers care what their code ends up looking like in the frontend? As far as the user is concerned, they will ONLY see design/frontend. They don't actually care that your code is clean, DRY and maintainable. As long as it doesn't disrupt their payment process or flight booking they do not care. Does this affect the average backend developer?

• Bind handler to Ajax Sys.Component.propertyChanged event

- by Steven Chalk
"When you create a client component class, you define the properties that you expect page developers to access. You can also raise Sys.Component.propertyChanged notification events in the set accessors for properties of your component. Page developers who use the component can bind the property notification event to their own handler to run code when the property value changes." From http://www.asp.net/AJAX/Documentation/Live/tutorials/DefiningBindableClientComponent.aspx Does anyone know how to bind a handler to a property changed event when raised from a property accessor. Looked for ages but cannot find an example anywhere showing how you would do this.

• How to clean sys.conversation_endpoints

- by Manjoor
I have a table, a trigger on the table implemented using service broker. More than Half million records are inserted daily into the table. The asynchronous SP is used to check sveral condition by using inserted data and update other tables. It was running fine for last 1 month and the SP was get executed withing 2-3 seconds of insertion of record. But now it take more than 90 minute. At present sys.conversation_endpoints have too much records. (Note that all the table are truncated daily as I do not need those records day after) Other database activities are normal (average 60% CPU Utilization). Now where i need to look?? I can re-create database without any problem but i don't think it is a good way to resolve the problem

• ASP.NET Ajax Error: Sys.WebForms.PageRequestManagerParserErrorException

- by Phil Bennett
My website has been giving me intermittent errors when trying to perform any Ajax activities. The message I get is Sys.WebForms.PageRequestManagerParserErrorException: The message received from the server could not be parsed. Common causes for this error are when the response is modified by calls to Response.Write(), response filters, HttpModules, or server trace is enabled. Details: Error parsing near ' So its obviously some sort of server timeout or the server's just returning back mangled garbage. This generally, unfortunately not always, happens when the site has been idle for a while. Anybody else been able to overcome this? Thanks

• Does HttpWebRequest automatically take care of certificate validation?

- by Kevin Pang
I'm using an HttpWebRequest object to access a web service via an HTTP POST. Part of the requirement is that I: Verify that the URL in the certificate matches the URL I'm posting to Verify that the certificate is valid and trusted Verify that the certificate has not expired Does HttpWebRequest automatically handle that for me? I'd assume that if any of these conditions came up, I'd get the standard "could not establish trust relationship for the SSL/TLS secure channel" exception.

• write() in sys/uio.h returns -1

- by fredrik
I'm using Ubuntu Server 9.10 AMD Phenom 2 cpu g++ (Ubuntu 4.4.1-4ubuntu9) 4.4.1 trying to run the application pftp-shit v 1.11. The following code in tcp.cc is executed successfully: int outfile_fd = open(name, O_CREAT | O_TRUNC | O_RDWR | O_BINARY)) which returns a file descriptor int (in my case 6) - name is a char array containing a valid path to my file which successfully i created. and successfully running: fchmod(outfile_fd, S_IRUSR | S_IWUSR); and access(name, W_OK) The issue occurs during running the function (from sys/uio.h) write(outfile_fd, this-control_buffer, read_length) which returns -1. -1 is of returned if nothing was written and otherwise a non-negative integer is returned which is equal to the number of bytes written. Anyone having a clue how I can get the write function to work?
