• Hung JVM consuming 100% CPU

  We have a JAVA server running on Sun JRE 6u20 on Linux 32-bit (CentOS). We use the Server Hotspot with CMS collector with the following options (I've only provided the relevant ones): -Xmx896m -Xss128k -XX:NewSize=384M -XX:MaxPermSize=96m -XX:+UseParNewGC -XX:+UseConcMarkSweepGC Sometimes, after running for a while, the JVM seems to slip into a hung state, whereby even though we don't make any requests to the application, the CPU continues to spin at 100% (we have 8 logical CPUs, so it looks like only one CPU does the spinning). In this state the JVM doesn't respond to SIGHUP signals (kill -3) and we can't connect to it normally with jstack. We CAN connect with "jstack -F", but the output is dodgy (we can see lots of NullPointerExceptions from JStack apparently because it wasn't able to 'walk' some stacks). So the "jstack -F" output seems to be useless. We have checked the memory usage on the box, there seems to be enough memory available and the system is not swapping. Has anyone come across such a situation? Does it look like a JVM bug? UPDATE I've obtained some more information about this problem (it happened again on a server that has been running for more than 7 days). When the JVM entered the "hung" state it stayed like that for 2 hours until the server was manually restarted. We have obtained a core dump of the process and the gc log. We tried to get a heap dump as well, but "jmap" failed. We tried to use jmap -F but then only a 4Mb file was written before the program aborted with an exception (something about the a memory location not being accessible). So far I think the most interesting information comes from the gc log. The fact that the server stayed in the hung state for 2 hours (probably trying to GC and compact the old generation) seems quite strange to me. Also, the gc log stops suddenly with that message and nothing else gets printed any more, probably because the VM Thread gets into some sort of infinite loop (or something that takes 2+ hours).

• Exchange 2010 DAG Automatic Failover Testing/Issue. Not always automatically failing over to health

  Ok I've got 2 exchange 2010 servers that run client access/hub transport/mailbox roles and one exchange 2010 server running just client access/hub transport roles and acts as my bridgehead. The two mailbox servers are running one database setup in a DAG. Server A shows the DB Mounted and Server B shows Healthy. If I reboot Server A via windows GUI Server B switches from healthy to mounted and I see hardly any interruption in service using Outlook 2007. Server A shows "Service down", then "Failed" then "Healthy" and leaves the DB mounted on Server B. This is how it should work, so far so good. Now if I test Server A being shut down cold, or unplugging both nics from network to simulate failure, Server B switches from Healthy to Mounted and server A switches to "Service Down" but my outlook client never connects to the DB mounted on server B! I can connect to server C (client access/hub transport) and get to my email and even send new email out, but incoming email doesn't deliver until Server A is brought back online and it's DB goes back to Healthy status. So I don't understand why it auto fail-overs when I reboot the server with the mounted DB copy, causing very little outlook 2007 hiccup if any. But when I shutdown or DC the mounted DB server it DOES mount the healthy copy but outlook 2007 clients can't connect.. I hope the picture I'm trying to paint makes some sense, it's driving me a little batty. Any help would be appreciated!

• Why is lassoing ink in OneNote so slow in general? Doesn't anyone care?

  Now I understand that this is especially an (known) issue in the OneNote 2013 preview and that it will probably be fixed in the final release. But lassoing in OneNote 2010 was no sprightly affair either. I'm just perplexed really, why on earth is there such an issue? Is lassoing intrinsically computationally expensive? OneNote would be soooooooooooo much more useful if there's no lasso lag. And doing a laggy lasso on tablet pcs with weak processors is just so much worse. Or do most folks just don't use the lasso feature much? I use it primarily to shrink intermediate calculations for future retrieval.

• What Is The Proper Laptop Battery Care While Running Laptop Solely On Battery?

  Because of convenience, I had to move my laptop to another room away from room where I always ran laptop on UPS without using battery. Since so far I always run laptop on battery, I question the proper usage to prolong battery life. Currently I run laptop on battery with power supply so battery is constantly being charged until it is full 100% and when it is, I disconnect power supply and continue working until battery meter shows 10% remaining. That's when I plug in power supply and let it charge until 100% once again while I work. But it takes a lot of time to fully charge laptop while working since my power supply is 60W which should be the reason of such slow charge and I think the kind of charger that I use is express charger. The thought of charging laptop until full, all while doing my work makes me think that if it takes way more time to charge, it might keep battery running warm for the period of charging time which brings me to question about whether I should keep running laptop as I've described above or it would be better to leave power supply constantly connected to laptop to keep battery between 99%-100%? On one hand it won't keep battery warm but it will try to frequently supply charge to battery once it gets 99% to replenish charge to 100% (which might reduce battery life?). On the other hand if I'll keep working solely on battery and recharge it when below 10%, the battery will get warm but only when charged. Can anybody suggest the correct way of running laptop on battery to ensure better battery life? Dell Latitude E6420 Windows 7 64-bit

  I'm interested in setting up a professional WordPress site but I'd like to explore the pssibilities to leave the management of the webserver and even WordPress' management to a company that guarantees great availability, performance of the site (load times, security) and even SEO. My site is currently running on other platform but I plan on a migration on the next 4 weeks. I've done this usually, but I'd like to focus on the content, so I don't have to mess with webserver/mysql/php configs in order to get nice performance. Is there some (maybe hosting) company that is dedicated to this? Would it be better to hire a sysadmin with experience in those matters?

• Things to take care while sending the username and password using Ajax request ?

  Normally we have login page with username, password filed and signin button. Using the normal form based approach we send the data on and page gets post back. Now i would like to change this using the Ajax. As Ajax too using the normal HTTP so i guess nothing in different from the existing workflow barring postback right ? Now my question is is what all securities issues can be there? and what care should be taken for doing so ? Should we encode data using say base64 or so before sending using Ajax?

• Validating Petabytes of Data with Regularity and Thoroughness

  by Brian Zents When former Intel CEO Andy Grove said “only the paranoid survive,” he wasn’t necessarily talking about tape storage administrators, but it’s a lesson they’ve learned well. After all, tape storage is the last line of defense to prevent data loss, so tape administrators are extra cautious in making sure their data is secure. Not surprisingly, we are often asked for ways to validate tape media and the files on them. In the past, an administrator could validate the media, but doing so was often tedious or disruptive or both. The debut of the Data Integrity Validation (DIV) and Library Media Validation (LMV) features in the Oracle T10000C drive helped eliminate many of these pains. Also available with the Oracle T10000D drive, these features use hardware-assisted CRC checks that not only ensure the data is written correctly the first time, but also do so much more efficiently. Traditionally, a CRC check takes at least 25 seconds per 4GB file with a 2:1 compression ratio, but the T10000C/D drives can reduce the check to a maximum of nine seconds because the entire check is contained within the drive. No data needs to be sent to a host application. A time savings of at least 64 percent is extremely beneficial over the course of checking an entire 8.5TB T10000D tape. While the DIV and LMV features are better than anything else out there, what storage administrators really need is a way to check petabytes of data with regularity and thoroughness. With the launch of Oracle StorageTek Tape Analytics (STA) 2.0 in April, there is finally a solution that addresses this longstanding need. STA bundles these features into one interface to automate all media validation activities across all Oracle SL3000 and SL8500 tape libraries in an environment. And best of all, the validation process can be associated with the health checks an administrator would be doing already through STA. In fact, STA validates the media based on any of the following policies: Random Selection – Randomly selects media for validation whenever a validation drive in the standalone library or library complex is available. Media Health = Action – Selects media that have had a specified number of successive exchanges resulting in an Exchange Media Health of “Action.” You can specify from one to five exchanges. Media Health = Evaluate – Selects media that have had a specified number of successive exchanges resulting in an Exchange Media Health of “Evaluate.” You can specify from one to five exchanges. Media Health = Monitor – Selects media that have had a specified number of successive exchanges resulting in an Exchange Media Health of “Monitor.” You can specify from one to five exchanges. Extended Period of Non-Use – Selects media that have not had an exchange for a specified number of days. You can specify from 365 to 1,095 days (one to three years). Newly Entered – Selects media that have recently been entered into the library. Bad MIR Detected – Selects media with an exchange resulting in a “Bad MIR Detected” error. A bad media information record (MIR) indicates degraded high-speed access on the media. To avoid disrupting host operations, an administrator designates certain drives for media validation operations. If a host requests a file from media currently being validated, the host’s request takes priority. To ensure that the administrator really knows it is the media that is bad, as opposed to the drive, STA includes drive calibration and qualification features. In addition, validation requests can be re-prioritized or cancelled as needed. To ensure that a specific tape isn’t validated too often, STA prevents a tape from being validated twice within 24 hours via one of the policies described above. A tape can be validated more often if the administrator manually initiates the validation. When the validations are complete, STA reports the results. STA does not report simply a “good” or “bad” status. It also reports if media is even degraded so the administrator can migrate the data before there is a true failure. From that point, the administrators’ paranoia is relieved, as they have the necessary information to make a sound decision about the health of the tapes in their environment. • Setting up Django on an internal server (os.environ() not working as expected?)

  I'm trying to setup Django on an internal company server. (No external connection to the Internet.) Looking over the server setup documentation it appears that the "Running Django on a shared-hosting provider with Apache" method seems to be the most-likely to work in this situation. Here's the server information: Can't install mod_python no root access Server is SunOs 5.6 Python 2.5 Apache/2.0.46 I've installed Django (and flup) using the --prefix option (reading again I probably should've used --home, but at the moment it doesn't seem to matter) I've added the .htaccess file and mysite.fcgi file to my root web directory as mentioned here. When I run the mysite.fcgi script from the server I get my expected output (the correct site HTML output). But, it won't when trying to access it from a browser. It seems that it may be a problem with the PYTHONPATH setting since I'm using the prefix option. I've noticed that if I run mysite.fcgi from the command-line without setting the PYTHONPATH enviornment variable it throws the following error: prompt$ python2.5 mysite.fcgi ERROR: No module named flup Unable to load the flup package. In order to run django as a FastCGI application, you will need to get flup from http://www.saddi.com/software/flup/ If you've already installed flup, then make sure you have it in your PYTHONPATH. I've added sys.path.append(prefixpath) and os.environ['PYTHONPATH'] = prefixpath to mysite.fcgi, but if I set the enviornment variable to be empty on the command-line then run mysite.fcgi, I still get the above error. Here are some command-line results: >>> os.environ['PYTHONPATH'] = 'Null' >>> >>> os.system('echo $PYTHONPATH') Null >>> os.environ['PYTHONPATH'] = '/prefix/path' >>> >>> os.system('echo $PYTHONPATH') /prefix/path >>> exit() prompt$ echo $PYTHONPATH Null It looks like Python is setting the variable OK, but the variable is only applicable inside of the script. Flup appears to be distributed as an .egg file, and my guess is that the egg implementation doesn't take into account variables added by os.environ['key'] = value (?) at least when installing via the --prefix option. • will mmap use user cpu instead of whole sys cpu? (solaris)

  when use mmap to allocate some anonymous mem, we often set the start address as 0/null so mmap will figure out the starting address by itself. And to get the start address, it will work thought the whole virtual memory space to find a hole which could put the chuck of mem to be allocated. I guess this is calculated as user cpu instead of sys cpu. If the virtual memory is fragmented, then the time to find the starting address will use more user cpu, is my understanding correct

• Django: How do I use assert False, sys.exc_info()[0] without showing a system error page?

  I'm new to Django and have some code in my views.py like this: try: myfunction() except: assert False, sys.exc_info()[0] This is very helpful because I get an email with lots of useful info if there's an error. The problem is that it also redirects the user to a Webfaction system error page. What I'd like to know is how do I still get the useful error email, but redirect the user to my own error page? Also, is this the best way to be handling errors in Django?

• What are the alternatives to public fields?

  I am programming a game in java, and as the question title suggestions i am using public fields in my classes. (for the time being) From what i have seen public fields are bad and i have some understanding why. (but if someone could clarify why you should not use them, that would be appreciated) The thing is that also from what i have seen, (and it seems logical) is that using private fields, but using getters and setters to access them is also not good as it defeats the point of using private fields in the first place. So, my question is, what are the alternatives? or do i really have to use private fields with getters and setters? For reference here is one of my classes, and some of its methods. • Why should I care about RVM's Gemset feature when I use Bundler?

  I just don't get it. I thought, Bundler was developed to resolve version conflicts between gems. So that I just have to require "bundler/setup" and everything is fine, knowing that Bundler will load the correct versions of all my gems and their dependencies. Now, RVM is great for managing multiple Rubies, I know, but why should I care about the Gemset feature? Do I miss something here? Can it make my development even easier? Maybe, some of you can give me some hints on the perfect RVM + Bundler workflow for both, development and production. I also don't know when RVM starts switching to another Ruby. I know that I can have an .rvmrc file in my project, but do I have to cd to this directory so that the switch happens? Furthermore, I usually use Passenger for development since, thanks to the Passenger.prefpane, integration in Mac OS is great. Can I still do that with RVM or is there a better way to do it? Does Passenger recognize .rvmrc files and switch to the correct Gemset?

  I know what whoopsie is from the answers to What is the 'whoopsie' process and how can I remove it? I do not want to stop error reporting, as I think that error reporting is the minimum a user should do to try to help Ubuntu. But since the upgrade to 13.10, whoopsie has grown up quite chatty.   How does one configure Radeon video cards when using the open source Radeon driver - power profile, vsync, etc?
