  • Is looking for code examples constantly a sign of a bad developer?

    I am a comp sci student with several years of experience in C and C++, and for the last few years I've been constantly working with Java/Objective C doing app dev and now I have switched to web dev and am mainly focused on ruby on rails and I came to the realization that (as with app dev, really) I reference other code wayyyy too much. I constantly google functionality for lots of things I imagine I should be able to do from scratch and it's really cracked my confidence a bit. Basic fundamentals are not an issue, I hate to use this as an example but I can run through javabat in both java/python at a sprint - obviously not an accomplishment and but what I mean to say is I have a strong base for the fundamentals I think? I know what I need to use typically but reference syntax constantly. Would love some advice and input on this, as it has been holding me back pretty solidly in terms of looking for work in this field even though I'm finishing my degree. My main reason for asking is not really about employment, but more that I don't want to be the only guy at a hackathon not hammering out nonstop code and sitting there with 20 google/github tabs open, and I have refrained from attending any due to a slight lack of confidence... Is a person a bad developer by constantly looking to code examples for moderate to complex tasks?

    If you attended Open World you may have seen the promotions for a new movie produced by Oracle. The movie is called Cloud Odyssey and it chronicles the journey of a hero to the cloud. The movie is an animated sci-fi adventure. This movie will be played at Oracle events around the world so you may soon get an invite to attend. Interesting approach to telling the cloud story. For many IT organizations, the journey to the cloud is a major initiative for end users. I am sure Homer would be proud.   • Java Transaction Service without the application server

    Is it possible to have a Java standalone application (no application server attached) that exposes some operations that a client can call and be the one to manage the transactions? I was thinking this application to expose JNDI resources and get a hold of a java:comp/UserTransaction from there, get also a bean from there and call methods A, B and C on it and coordinate the transaction from the client? The application I'm writing isn't complex enough so that I need a big application server around it so I'm thinking to have a standalone JTS inside it that the client could interact with from a transactions point of view. I don't have much experience with distributed transactions and don't really know how to tackle the issue. Is it even possible? Am I getting myself into something beyond what a mere mortal (programmer) can handle? How can I approach this?

  • Installation on windows isn't going on

    I downloaded the ubuntu on the USB. Then downloaded the windows installer. Restarted my computer. Till there was ok, but after a 40 minutes waiting the instalation isn't goind on. It has stoped on the 3/4. What to do? I removed the UsB to, after the instalation had stoped; It wasnt going on for 30 minutes. What to do now? Is it a disaster? UPDATE: I restarted my comp. Selecdet Ubuntu in the boot menu (not Windows). The reinstallation started but is "stops" in the same point. in about the 3/4.

  • 12.04 boots into terminal after first install. How to boot into GUI permanently?

    As a person with a quite limited CLI experience I congratulate myself on installing Ubuntu on an ancient non-pae Fujitsu Amilo M1425 thru the network with mini.iso. However upon reboot I'm met w/ the following: Ubuntu 12.04.1 LTS ubuntu-fujitsu tty1 ubuntu-fujitsu login: for which my specified login during setup is not accepted. (I'm quite sure its correct) Let's assume this screen is passed, how to start the GUI and make it the permanent option during boot? This box will return to a mostly comp-illiterate person, for which the existence of ubuntu will be an enough shock already. Wouldn't wanna leave him w/o the GUI. Other posts here mention the command startx but I probably need a login in the first place.. So "why won't it accept my login & how can I make the GUI-boot permanent?" is my question. Thanks in advance.

  • Is there a way to disable a particular pci port

    I have a MB with 2 nics on it. a switch burned up and took out one of them. there is no way to turn them off individually in the bios. is there a way to turn off one of the ports. unmap it,unbind it, power it down so the system doesnt see it at after boot. they are mapped as 0000:02.08.0 and 0000:02.08.1 I want to turn the second one off somehow. Since they both use the same driver, blacklisting the module will take out both of them. Normally I would just live with it but it seems there should be a way to do that like in windows (gasp)--just disable it. I Actually have the exact same problem on another comp running XCP so this will be a 2fer if it gets figured out. the OS is 12.4 lts server with xen on it. THX

    Many moons ago I cut C code for a living, primarily while maintaining a POP3 server that supported a wide range of OSs (Linux, *BSD, HPUX, VMS ...). I'm planning to polish the rust off my C skills and learn a bit about language implementation by coding a simple FORTH in C. But I'm wondering how (or whether?) have things changed in the C world since 2000. When I think C, I think ... comp.lang.c ANSI C wherever possible (but C89 as C99 isn't that widely supported) gcc -Wall -ansi -pedantic in lieu of static analysis tools Emacs Ctags Autoconf + make (and see point 2 for VMS, HP-UX etc. goodness) Can anyone who's been writing in C for the past eleven years let me know what (if anything ;-) ) has changed over the years? (In other news, holy crap, I've been doing this for more than a decade).

    I've just installed UBUNTU 12.04 for curiosity purposes. I'm a gamer and I wanted to install Brute force Save data on my comp. So i download it and it open in the Archive manager i go to run the ".exe" but encounter this message Archive: /home/c4/Desktop/Bruteforce_Save_Data_installer.exe [/home/c4/Desktop/Bruteforce_Save_Data_installer.exe] End-of-central-directory signature not found. Either this file is not a zipfile, or it constitutes one disk of a multi-part archive. In the latter case the central directory and zipfile comment will be found on the last disk(s) of this archive. zipinfo: cannot find zipfile directory in one of /home/c4/Desktop/Bruteforce_Save_Data_installer.exe or /home/c4/Desktop/Bruteforce_Save_Data_installer.exe.zip, and cannot find /home/c4/Desktop/Bruteforce_Save_Data_installer.exe.ZIP, period.   • About to graduate from good school without any progamming skills

    Not sure if it is good place to ask this question, but found this section to be suitable. I am about to graduate from a good school (in the US) with Computer Science degree, having good grades and high GPA. I have no freaking clue how to write a good program, how to properly test it... nada, zero. We were never been taught how to write software. Ye, sure the Comp. Architecture class is important, and I can tell you a lot about how MIPS processor works, and I can tell you about Binary Trees and Red-Black Trees and running time of operations in Big Oh, but it has nothing to do with programming in "real" life. For god sake, none of my classmates know how to use STLs or write templated code! To be honest, I found that many of my classes to be waste of time. What should I do ? How to step into real life and learn how to program ?

  • How do I get a D-Link DWL-G520 working?

    I have Ubuntu 12.04 on an older desktop PC, and I am finding it much harder to connect to a wifi connection than it should be. I have an iPhone with which I want to tether to it with Mifi 4.0, but I need to install ipheth which I can't do without internet on that computer. I am typing from my other windows pc with which i can download and move hings with thumb drives, but haven't gotten keryx to work. I also found a D-Link DWL-G520 HIGH SPEED 2.4GHZ (802.11G) WIRELESS 108MBPS PCI ADAPTER which I installed, but can't find a driver to put on a flashdrive to use it. If anybody has any ideas, they are appreciated. I am a noob, and I don't want to have to move the comp. downstairs to plug into the modem. PS: I also have a netgear USB network adapter, which doesn't work with my Ubuntu.

    I've recently ditched windows 7 for Ubuntu 11.10 64bit... I'm a total novice and was wondering do I need to make any changes to the firewall?. I read somewhere that the built in firewall doesn't need touching...but a friend says he uses firestarter,I'd be really grateful if someone could advise me weather to just leave well alone or if I should make certain changes,I'll be doing a lot of web browsing and also proberly a bit of online banking to. Infact this is one of the reasons I've switched to Linux as I was told its much more secure than windows... I just want my comp to be setup in a way that I can access my bank account safely and not knowing what to do about the firewall or how to configure it is off putting... Also do I need an antivirus?..I know bitdefender and eset do a free Linux scanner but again I've heard there not really needed. Thanks in advance to anyone who can answer my questions...much appreciated. Dave...

  • All traffic is passed through OpenVPN although not requested

    I have a bash script on a Ubuntu box which searches for the fastest openvpn server, connects, and binds one program to the tun0 interface. Unfortunately, all traffic is being passed through the VPN. Does anybody know what's going on? The relevant line follows: openvpn --daemon --config $cfile --auth-user-pass ipvanish.pass --status openvpn-status.log There don't seem to be any entries in iptables when I enter sudo iptables --list.   • Xubuntu loading slow after the session/password select

    I recently installed Xubuntu on my computer. I love the distro. Everything was fast, and then the bootup slowed down. It started taking a couple minutes for my user selected wallpaper to show and the menu to appear, basically do anything on the comp. I do not recall doing anything other than changing the swappiness. It did not affect it initially. Would that be something to affect it or are there other ideas that might have caused this sudden change.

  • Ubuntu 11.10 not showing up in GRUB bootloader after update and restart :(

    I was using ubuntu 11.10 with gnome-shell. I installed various useful softwares and ran system update using update manager which ran smoothly and asked me to restart my comp at the end. I restarted it to find that Ubuntu entries were missing from the GRUB bootloader and only memory test and windows are showing up. I took a lot of pain in installing various important softwares and cannot afford a re-installation. Tried to boot from the live cd and installed boot-repair and after running it .. it wasnt working properly .. it was just showing that it was "scanning systems" for more than an hour. Kindly help.   • Play an audio file using RemoteIO and Audio Unit

    I am looking at Apple's 'aurioTouch' example for the iPhone and I would like to play an mp3 or wav instead of using the built in mic. I am very new to the audio portion of iPhone programming, but I think I need to modify the SetupRemoteIO(...) function and replace the AudioComponent named 'comp' with a custom AudioComponent that plays a file. Basically I want the app to function exactly the same as the original, but with an audio file as the input instead of the mic.

Is there a way to pass arbitrary arguments to scalac for the eclipse scala plugin?
