• Java: InitialContext.lookup(String) - what should the value o the parametr be?

  To instantiate a Stateful Session Bean inside of a JSP/ servlet, I am using: InitialContext ic = new InitialContext(); SomeStateful state = (SomeStateful) ic.lookup("java:comp/env/SomeStatefulBean"); Trial and error had me prefix the name of my EJB with java:comp/env/, so the above works (on Glassfish 2.1). However I want to know what the proper way to obtain this prefix is. Is there a CLI tool or function somewhere in the admin panel that will allow we to examine/ alter this? Is this platform/ application server dependant? Is there a setting within my ear, EJB-jar or war which I can examine or alter for this? (Forgive the beginner question) Thanks!

• Java session facade not being found via InitialContext lookups

  I have a project that is Java EE 5 running on Glassfish. The IDE is Netbeans 6.7.1. We periodically have a very annoying problem with new session facades not being located via InitialContext: javax.naming.NameNotFoundException: No object bound to name java:comp/env/GlobalConfigEntityFacadeLocal In my class (within the same EJB container), I can use the other session facades just fine. This sort of problem happens periodically, and a mixture of clean&build and deleting the build-impl.xml files from nbproject sometimes resolve this. We are not using ejb-jar.xml (stopped using that over a year ago, it is now an empty The code that is calling this is very straight forward: GlobalConfigEntityFacadeLocal globalConfigEntityFacade = null; try { InitialContext ic = new InitialContext(); globalConfigEntityFacade = (GlobalConfigEntityFacadeLocal) ic.lookup("java:comp/env/GlobalConfigEntityFacadeLocal"); ... } catch ( ... ) {} Any advice would be appreciated!!!! • Python: Importing a file from a parent folder

Nothing so far has worked, from using sys.path.append('.') to just import foo I have a python file that wishes to import a file (that is in its parent directory). Can you help me figure out how my child file can successfully import its a file in its parent directory.   i have 2 textboxes that i am filling with StartDate, and Endate. i want to use the compareValidator to make sure that the StartDate is less that the EndDate. i used this: <asp:CompareValidator ID="Comp" ControlToValidate="txtStartDate" ControlToCompare="txtEndDate" Operator="LessThan" Type="Date" runat="server" Display="dynamic" Text="Failed!" /> the validator is always giving me Failed no matter what the dates are. if startdateendate or vise versa, Failed appears. i am using (MM/dd/yyyy) format in the textboxes.   There's this note in c++11 29.3-p3: [ Note: Although it is not explicitly required that S include locks, it can always be extended to an order that does include lock and unlock operations, since the ordering between those is already included in the "happens before" ordering. - end note ] What does it mean by "always"? I can understand that any certain implementation can be designed to support such an extended S. But in some general implementation that wasn't designed for it, I don't see that S can be extended so.   on Startup When my system starts up, the internet connection is dead. This causes various problems with startup items such as updates and auto-start programs failing. However, the connection is fine after going into Network and Sharing, Change adapter settings, then disabling and re-enabling the adapter. Any suggestions on why this is happening and how to fix it? • Ubuntu not mounting brand-new external drive

  I bought a brand new 3TB external drive for my birthday coming up, It's a WD My Book, it came as NTFS, and I'm trying to make it mount using a simple script on boot. (Not /etc/fstab, I ruined my comp. using that by accident and had to re-install, I'm instead having a script run in /etc/init.d) The thing is, it's under /dev/sdf and I want it to mount in /exhd, the script seems to run but it doesn't mount it, any help here?

• Number of processes named 'doodle'

  I have ben using 12.10 for a few days. Just upgraded it from 12.04. This comp of mine, which has a 4GB RAM and 64 bit intel processor, just goes slow randomly. When I press Ctrl+Alt+F6 and login through a command prompt, I see a number of processes using - ps -A I get many instances of a process named 'doodle' running. So many that I have to 'pkill' them by hand. Any idea why this is happening?

It has recently come to my attention that bigendian came from Jonathan Swift's Gulliver's Travels. I was pretty surprised when listening to the book on my commute to hear something I'd only heard before in Comp Sci / Engineering classes. I thought it was some sort of nouveau-politically incorrect piece of holdover jargon like Master and Slave drives or Polish Notation. Are there any other incidents, not of politically incorrect jargon, but of literature influencing aspects of computers, programming or software development?

  In my experience interviewing developers I feel like candidates who've achieved a Masters in Comp Sci tend to be worse programmers on average that those who don't have a Masters. Is that just me, or have others noticed this phenomenon? If so, why would that be the case? UPDATE I appreciate the thoughtful comments. I think I should have been clearer in the comparison I'm making. Given two candidates who graduated from college around the same time, someone who went on to gain a Masters seems on average to be a worse programmer than someone who spent all their time in industry.

• Why does a computer science degree matter to a professional programmer?

  I have a degree in computer science. It has been great for opening doors, getting a job. As far as helping me in the professional field of C# .NET programming (the most popular platform and language in the area I work if not the entire united states on hands down the most popular OS in the world) its hardly useful. Why do you think it helps you as a programmer in your professional career (outside spouting off to prims algorithm to impress some interviewer)? In today's world adaptation, a quick mind, strong communication, OO and fundamental design skills enable a developer to write software that a customer will accept. These skills are only skimmed over in the cs program. In my mind, reading a 500 page C# book by Wrox offers far more useable a skillset than 4 years of the comp sci math blaster courses. Many disagree. So, why does a computer science degree matter?
